For a writer of series that primarily appeal to boy readers, R.L. Stine has never been afraid to tell his stories from the viewpoint of a girl. Some authors of middle-grade horror might hesitate to use a female lead, fearful of their male readership losing interest, but R.L. Stine has done so many times and always to just as resounding of success as his novels with boy main characters. In the tradition of Carly Beth Caldwell and her terrifying encounters with haunted masks on Halloween, it's now Monica Anderson's turn to face the fright of living, breathing, soul-possessing masks on All Hallows' Eve. Twelve-year-old Monica has been through an awful ordeal, but she's made her way to the home of the Listener in Horrorland amusement park, to relate her story so it can be recorded alongside the paranormal tribulations of other kids in the Hall of Horrors series. Monica sensed deep down from the start that this wouldn't be an ordinary Halloween when she went out with her ten-year-old brother, Peter, to trick-or-treat, but never did she suspect that before the evening was through, the fate of the world would depend on the two of them.

Monica's patience with Peter ordinarily wears thin from his juvenile tricks and rascally inconsiderate streak, so it's no surprise to her when he ignores their parents' rules and persists in trick-or-treating farther than they're supposed to go, into a neighborhood Monica doesn't recognize. Knocking on the front door of a huge, gothic mansion opens up unlimited realms of disaster when the woman who answers Peter's call for candy draws the two siblings into a web of magick rivalry between two hundred-year-old enemies who engage in a supernatural war of wits every October 31. Bella, who answered the door, must keep her five special Halloween masks out of Dr. Screem's hands until dawn's earliest light or all will be lost, humanity enslaved to Dr. Screem and his evil. Monica and Peter are bound to help Bella prevent Dr. Screem from taking the masks, for their assistance is foretold in Bella's magick book. With each mask Monica and Peter track down and confiscate, a correlating psychological challenge assaults them, and it's imperative they overcome them all to thwart the evil one's plans before Halloween is over. If they can make it to November 1, the game will end...but is the game as straightforward as the two enemy sides have led Monica and Peter to believe?

I found parts of The Five Masks of Dr. Screem confusing, and the ending sequence crossed me up more than a little, but the action is fast-paced and fun, an enjoyable scary story. Despite the "Special Edition!" exclamation on the cover, the only structural dissimilarity between this book and the first two Hall of Horrors installments is its division into two parts, with nothing significant differentiating Part One from Part Two. It's just a longer story, roughly forty pages longer than Claws! or Night of the Giant Everything. I wondered if there might be some intermingling with the characters or storylines from the first two books, as R.L. Stine engineered to superbly eerie effect in the first Horrorland series, but it was not to be. Brandon Dorman's deliciously noirish cover art for The Five Masks of Dr. Screem is a highlight of the book, a real eye-catcher. And as annoying as Monica feels he is, I think her brother Peter is a refreshing addition to the story. He has attitude to spare, and he's fun to pull for as he and his sister fight one demonic opponent after another. I'll give The Five Masks of Dr. Screem one and a half stars, and I weighed the decision to round up or down for a while before electing the latter. Young readers should have a blast with this book, particularly at Halloween time. I know I did.

I enjoyed many RL Stine books when I was a kid. The suspense at the end of every chapters and the immense relief at the beginning of the next chapters. The way in which every book ended on a sinister note. I just read this boom to understand why I was caught up in the world. It is mostly simple, the hero always makes it through. And the heroes are regular kids. Plain regular kids overcoming their fear of the dark. Anyways, still this book got what it takes.

This book was really fun, if a bit far-fetched and confusing at times.
I really liked how imaginative this was. The idea behind it is out there, the story isn't exactly backed up by any sort of logic... but it's so creative and entertaining that I was willing to suspend my disbelief and go along for the ride. And what a ride it was. I was actually drawn into this story, which doesn't happen often anymore with GB books. My biggest complaint is that the story didn't feel very tied-together at the end. As per usual, we got multiple twists at the end. One of them was very predictable, the other one not quite as much, but it left me a little bit confused as to the implications behind it.
Overall I enjoyed this book, though the story might be a bit too complex for its own good. Even with this being a longer, special edition book, I feel like this idea wasn't explored to its full potential. Still a really fun read, though.

Could have been way better, I like it's idea and reminds me of some fantasy adventure stories like Lord of the Rings for some reason and other things with McGuffins and it's a good establishment in the beginning but how the story deals with it throughout the end are all over the place and some parts of it just happens on random and unexplained, though I like one particular one that mainly deals with the graveyard, it's mainly the only part of the adventure that stands out the most as it's more of the atmospheric and spooky than the rest, though it may have been better if they focused more longer to the other masks that was left out but some parts of it in the end is good but rushed and mainly leads to one twist ending that is alright.

Had a good time reading with Tito. It was fun to make guesses with him about what would happen next. Stine sure does like the word shrill. Finished the book while on sick day while Tito was coloring Hulk.

This book feels like it couldve been awesome, but the concept is a little too grand for what it actually ends up being. Theres a shit load of set up, for a very cool idea but one that i dont find that special. The egyptian stuff, the wolf stuff, dont really care for any of that… but i like the graveyard scene and the climax is cool for how rushed it is. My biggest gripe here is how long this book is, conceptually it feels like it might need all 174 pages, on the other hand it only spends around 80 pages finding the masks making the rest of the book feel stretched out story wise(which isnt a huge issue because its not boring)

6.5/10-heavily flawed but fun

It's Halloween, and these two siblings get sucked into a danger-filled night of a hunt for 5 missing masks... It's a burden they don't want to take on... but their parents and house have disappeared, so what do they have to lose?

Man, there is a LOT packed into this story... The kids end up experiencing a series of terrible, spine-tingling events -- so there is a LOT that could go wrong!

Goosebumps Scary Level for Kids: 4/5
(There are so many horrific situations in the story, you're probably scared of at least one.)

The Five Masks Of Dr. Screem
Monica is being forced by her mother to take her hyper, 10-year old, brother Peter trick or treating. He’s going in his karate uniform and she’s going in her gymnastic costume. Peter continues to act like a pain. He steals Monica’s candy and chops her in the throat (causing her to choke). Caroline and Monice eventually get fed up with him and go off on ther own. Peter wanders off unto an unfamiliar block that Monica doesn’t have a good feeling about. He rings the doorbell to one of the house and an old woman comes to the door. She says she knew he’d come.

She invites them into the front room and surprisingly knows their names. She tells them her name is Bella. When asked how she knows them she says they were in the book. Then she shows them an ancient book called “The Book of Hallows”. In it, it says she will be visited by two children (Peter and Monica) who will be celebrating Hallow’s Eve rituatls but will give them up to help her. (Now if I was out trick or treating and someone I’d never seen in my life told me they knew I’d come-well unless it was a really good-looking man- I’d probably take off in the other direction and NOT GO INTO THEIR HOUSE! Then I would have been like YEAH I think I should be leaving now! Cause this probably won’t end well.

Bella says they have to help her get back the five masks of scream and they have powerful magic. The book now has new writing on the page that basically says they stay and help Bella. She shows them the five masks. There’s a skull, a wolf, one of a mummy, and one of a pig. If they aren’t scary enough, they start howling. Bella says she’s 130 years old and if they want to get home safely they need to listen and believe. The masks were creaed by a sorcerer named Hallows. He was born on Halloween night and died on a Halloween night. He gave the masks strong magic and gave them to Dr. Screem. But he’s evil she can’t let him keep them. They say it’s time to go but there’s no door.

Bella tells them once they’re in there’s no way out. She hides the mask back behind the hidden book shelf and continues her story. Hallows didn’t know about Screems evil. Screem is her enemy and every year he steals them but they have to be found (year after year). If she doesn’t get the masks back the world will be in danger. She can’t go after them herself so she needs someone else. If she touches the mask she’ll crumple to ashes. That’s the way Screem made it. He put a curse on her. Again this is confirmed in the book, and it says their real terror will start in five minutes.

Books start to fly in all directions and then Screem enters. With ease he finds the five masks and snatches them up. Bella tries to tackle him, but he dodges her and she hits the floor. He tells her don’t try to stop him. The masks and their power will be his permanently. Bella tells him that after Halloween he’ll have no control. He tells Peter and Monica in warning don’t they try to stop him either. He knows who they are. Peter and Moncia say NOPE! Your on your own lady and get out of there. But when they get to their house its GONE!

Peter and Monica decide to go to the neighboors-The Klines-. Only the people in the house say they don’t know the Klines and they must have the wrong street. Not only that the old man and his wife say there’s never been a house next door. It’s always been a empty lot. With no other choice, they go back to Bella’s house (whose expecting them). Tell her there house is gone and ask for her help. She gives them some hot, apple, cider and tells them they have to learn to trust her. But it *was* Screem. He did it to prove how powerful he is. With the masks he can change relity (making things disappear forever). And there’s no changing it.

The only way is go on the hunt and if the masks are found Screems magic goes away for a year. She then gives them a list of the masks. These are the masks ()Ugly insect; mummy; Himalayan snow wolf; human skull; alien pig creature.") She says they’ll find them, but can they bring them back. She says they have until dawn. If they wear one Scream can’t take it. When they’re wearing them all, he’ll be powerless. Before leaving, she gives them one last warning about how Screem is a master of lying.

They find the first mask (the insect mask) in the hedges. Momica starts to put it on but it’s .. alive. Peter inspects the mask and sees it’s filled with bugs. Still, Peter says she has to put it on before Screem comes back. Peter says he’ll put the next one on. UH BRUSH THE OFF. GIVE THE THING A HARD SHAKE! She puts it on (without listening to me) and the bugs crawl all over her and start biting her face. The scene changes. Now there’s in the woods and they see thick, tall, insects (that look like praying mantis). They’re chewing and chewing and then they start to advance There’s nowhere to run so they’re surrounded. Monica tries to pull the mask off but it won’t budge. Then the insect starts to ram Monica and then lifts her up toward it’s mouth. Surprisingly the bugs don’t eat them. They carry them to a bush and pin them there.

It pulls thread from it’s body and ties Monica up in a cacoon. Peter saves them both by dumping his Halloween candy on the ground. The insects lose interest in them and go after the candy. The candy holds there attention a hot minute. Then they’re after them. Peter is quick and gets away under a bush. Monica uses a thread to swing through. Then there back on the street in front of Bella’s house. It doesn’t look like she’s there. Peter says he knows where the next mask is (the history museum). The inspect mask was on the ground with the insects after all. So, they head there to find the mummy mask. They try to find an entrance but are surrounded by mummies. But they turn out to only be kids in costumes going to “Mummyfeast” The musems annual Halloween party.

They get in by telling one of the (museum worker?) Monica is looking for her “litte sister Franny”. They almost make it to the Egyptian room when they’re stopped by a security guard. Luckily, its just some kids the guard sees that have lose their way to the exit. They look around the Eygptian room but don’t see anything. Peter says he bets Screem hide the masks in the cases. While trying to open one, Monica falls right on top of a mummy. When Monica gets out and calls Peter’s name, he’s not there. Peter finds the mask in one of the cases. He hesitates because it’s full of dust and smells like decay but puts it on just as security guards burst into the room. Peter puts on the mask. They find themselves on a wooden stretcher. Both are tied down. There’s an alter and a pyramid in the background.

White robbed, bald, men surround them. They discover the men are priest. The men are taking them to a cauldron of steaming tar. They’re about to be mummified alive. The man are holding Peter over the cauldron. With a kick, from Monica one of the men goes into the cauldron. The others drop Peter and they make a run for it. There’s a sudden sand storm and when it stops there’s a door. They’re now back at the back of the history museum. Two down. Three more to go. There’s a steep hill called Wolf hill. They go there next. Monica accidently falls from the pathway. She lands on a rock stone and gets up. Then she sees an angry animal wearing the snow mask. She grabs the mask. It’s a dog with red eyes. It traps Monica on the rock ledge. Monica puts on the mask. She finds herself on a snowy, mountain.

She can smell a dead rabbit and gets hungry. Then she smells a human. The paw prints she sees in the snow are here. She’s turned into a snow wolf. She can’t let Peter have her food so she pounces on him and takes him to the edge of the cliff. She tosses him over the side. Monica catches him in time and pulls him back. Her mind starts to free and she sets him free. Because they’re both screaming, they start an avalanche. Monica reaches for Peter but can’t find him and ends up sinking. They’re able to pull themselves up. They survive the avalance. Monica is herself again and they’re where there house use to be. They head to the graveyard to find the skull mask. Once there, Monica hears a moan. A headstone topples over. Then she hears the moaning again. They find an open grave and a yellow mask on top of it. Monica starts to left it but it’s attached to a skeleton and then it rises up. The skull belongs to the skeleton.

It grabs Monica’s throat and then it snatches Peter up and heaves them into the open grave. The grave starts to fill with worms and they can’t climb out. Then Screem appears. He’s wearing the skeleton masks. He tells them they shouldn’t have come. He helps them out the grave, tells the skeleton it’s work is done, and tells them to give him the three masks. They say if he gives them their parents and their house they’ll give him the mask. He counters by saying if they don’t give him the mask, they’ll never see their parents again. Screem says Bella is the evil one. She’s the one that took their house and parens so they’d help her. Then she believes Bella’s words and says she told them he was a liar. He tells them her real name is “Belladonna” as in night shade as in poison.

They ask him if he’s so good then why did he make it so dangerous to get the mask. He says he had too. They were working with Belladonna. Screem demands the mask. Peter tries to karate kick him. They struggle and fall into the grave. When Monica looks in the grave, it’s empty. Monica sees a tunnel and follows it. Monica sees Screem running toward her. But it’s not Screem. It’s Peter. He has the alien pig mask and the skeleton mask. They take off running and climb out of the grave. It’s dawn. When they run past their house, it’s still not there. They reach Bella’s house and yell out her name but there’s no answer. They look all over the house. Nothing!

She comes down the stairs and says she’d given up hope. She asks for them and says she’s proud of them. She tells them to hurry. It’s almost dawn. Peter won’t give Bella the mask and she goes beserk! She tries to grab them away from him. He pulls the mummy mask off. It’s not Peter. It’s Screem. He says the boy believed he was telling truth so they traded places in the graveyard. He then slids the mask off Monica. He tells Belladonna the world is safe from her for another year. She threatens to get both Monica and her brother. But Screem says she won’t be getting anyone. They tussle over the masks for a minute. They both roll into the sunlight and vanish. The masks vanish with them. Peter shows up in the kitchen in Screem’s robe. Screem told him not to show up until the sun shone and it was safe.

When they get to the lot where there house is, it’s still empty. Monica says she has an idea. They return to Bella’s house and find the Hallow’s book. Everything that happened is right there. Monica crossed out the last lines and writes in a new ending. The house returns. The parents are ok. There memories are wiped clean. They don’t remember the house their in and they return home. All the l ights are on. Mom and dad are waiting at the door. Five masks topple out of Peter’s trick or treat bag, He doesn’t know where he got them. Then it all comes back to Monica.

My Thoughts
I went back and forth with if I should start this one or “Claws!” first. (I usually try to read series books in order). This one won out tho because the cover was so cool! Another reason was because I’d just finished “A Place for Vanishing”. Similarly they book had to do with masks. So, if you like this one you should read that one. This one tho fell a little short. I know part of the “charm” of Goosebumps books is that they’re light reading but if you have a title like “The Five Masks of Dr. Screem.” Then there *should* be a big focus on these maks. The focus on this story was more about *finding* the masks.

We have “The Insectr Mask”, the “Wolf Mask”, the “Mummy Mask”, the “Skeleton Mask” and the “ and a “Pig Mask.” Right off we’re told these masks are extremely powrerful and shouldn’t get into the wrong hands. But the only *powers” they seem to have is transporting the wearer to a related location. I think with the “Wof Mask” we actually get to see a transformation. I would have really liked to see the wearer of the mask take on the characteristics of the masks. These was so rushed through that we don’t even get to see what the “Pig Mask” does. I even had a hard time even *remembering* what one because nothing was done with it.
So overall, it wasn’t a bad story I just wanted to see a little bit more done with the mask and not the places *around* the masks (where they were found and where they could take you).

The Goosebumps books that demonstrate the greatest narrative strength are those that take a normal adolescent life, then toss in a strange occurrence that affects how the characters interact with each other. The rest follows naturally, and is naturally entertaining. For example, How I Learned to Fly and Be Careful What You Wish For... come to mind.

The Five Masks of Dr. Screem does not follow this formula. Instead, its plot serves as an excuse to set up a series of "scary" scenes that are mostly unrelated. While some of the imagery and settings were haunting and at least marginally memorable, the story as a whole is underwhelming. Like Night of the Giant Everything before it, this book is fine to read once, but it has no further pull on my imagination.

Our six year old has been reading voraciously and we've trying to encourage that as much as possible, trying to be flexible with the material. She's been trying to find 'creepy' books more and more and so we reluctantly started dipping our toe into Goosebumps. This was the first I read with her and she enjoyed it immensely and I was surprised to enjoy it myself. It had some depth, some decent structure and narration and was entertaining without being overly scary for her. We'll definitely read more together.

This books showed me that R. L. Stine's imagination really ain't got any borders. I loved the story of each mask and I think you really must have a lot of things going on inside your head for you to write a book like this. I know that there are books out there much more complex and surprising, but I don't know why I was really intrigued and surprised by the idea of this one in particular. Anyway, what I wanted to say is that I really enjoyed reading this story and I think it's a worthwhile read. 📚🤍☁️🌙🌃

I read many of the Goosebumps books growing up. In fact I do think it was R.L. Stine who inspired me to start writing my own stories. I wanted to read some of Stine's more recent Goosebumps books out of curiosity. This is a very good book for kids. Suitably creepy and a compelling premise. Perfect reading for a young kid for Halloween.

I recommend to read "the five mask of DR.Screem" because the book is really easy to get into, suspenseful, and over all just a good book. For example, the author puts the right amount of detail and you never know what's gonna happen next. And that's why I recommend the story.

TLDR;
“‘You don’t know the meaning of scary.’”

Monica and Peter have to fight creatures and the rising sun as they try to capture five haunted masks. It was full of action, and I really liked that they resisted the Call to Action in the beginning, that’s not something I ever see in Goosebumps. I liked the twists, the pacing, the characters, and the atmosphere. I love the Story Keeper at the beginning and ending of each of these books.

“You know the old rhyme — a laugh a day keeps the werewolves away.”

Trick-or-Scream:
Monica Anderson (12) is stuck trick-or-treating with her little brother, Peter (10), on Halloween. Peter loves karate and is constantly karate chopping Monica—he’s annoying. Two of Monica’s gymnastic teammates, Caroline and Regina, join her for trick-or-treating. Soon, however, they both ditch her to get as far away “from the Karate Monster” as they can. Monica is tired and getting cold but Peter, a “candy freak”, refuses to stop running from house to house. “Monica, we have to do one more block.” I’m sure we’ve all heard a child repeat a similar phrase. And one more block turns into another because Peter just won’t listen and runs off, disappearing “into the deep shadow of the hedge.”
Monica follows him up a dark driveway and to a spooky house. They meet Bella who tells them they’re the kids from the book. The Hallows Book. When they see the book with magical writing that mentions them by name, they think it’s a Halloween joke. Bella gets upset the more the kids refuse her. She says they are here to help her; the book says so. She says: “This book isn’t a joke. It tells everything that happens.” Bella needs Monica and Peter to help her recover the five Masks of Screem. “They are masks of powerful magic.” She continues on: “I struggle every year to keep the masks from [Screem]. But every year, he steals them. Every Halloween, we must struggle over the masks. He steals them and hides them [. . . .] And I am forced to play the same dangerous game year after year [for the last one hundred years]. [. . . .] If I don’t keep the masks away from him, the world will be in terrible danger.” Bella needs Monica and Peter because if she touches the masks herself she will “crumble to ashes.”
Dr. Screem breaks in and steals the masks. Using the chaos of his arrival, Monica and Peter “tugged open the front door of the house, and . . . rocketed outside.” They hurry home, it’s very late and Monica knows their parents will be very upset. Yet, when they get home, there is no house on their hill. They go to their neighbour’s house but their neighbours are different and tell them: “There’s never been a house next door. . . . It’s always been an empty lot.” The kids have no choice but to head back to Bella’s house. Bella says it’s the powerful magic of Dr. Screem, he knows who they are and what their purpose is. Monica and Peter have until dawn to bring back the masks to ensure Dr. Screem spends another year without magic. Bella’s last warning is that Dr. Screem’s “most impressive power is his ability to lie.”
Monica and Peter then have to struggle to capture the masks. Horrible things happen when they put them on and time is of the essence.

This book was really interesting. Bella talked a lot, so the beginning is a lot of Bella explaining the book and how the masks work. There were some contingency issues, they got one mask without doing a single thing, the book just said they had X number of masks when it wasn’t the case before. Peter was a typical annoying brother; he wasn’t obnoxious or a horrible character. This was the first Hall of Horrors book I read and it was a strong one to start on. I thought the other book, Night of the Giant Everything, was okay. Structure-wise it was great, but I didn’t care much for the story as it wasn’t relatable. This one was good because I love Halloween and trick-or-treating was such fun for me. I liked the beginning introduction too; the Story Keeper is great and I love that the introduces the next book so we have something to look forward to.

The Five Masks of Dr. Screem (Goosebumps: Hall of Horrors, #3) by R.L. Stine

horror

the book has many settings

A sister and brother are going trick or treating and they stumble across a house which doesn't look so pleasing , when they knock on the door there is a woman who already knows their names and is saying that they will help her get five different mask that Dr. Screem has stolen every year on halloween , after a bunch of deals she finally got them to do the task after finding all of the mask they brought them back to the house and before they gave the lady the mask Dr. Screem was hiding in plain sight and had snatched the mask but instead of doing something bad he had fought the lady saying that ''how could you think you could trick these two innocent kids into thinking your the good person'' then they had dissapeared in the moon.

the book doesn't really have a theme but if it did then it would be to never trust others other than your family

I liked the locations of the masks

I didn't like... NOTHING the whole book was very good

I have always been a fan of R.L Stine's Goosebumps series. This was also my first special edition Goosebumps book, and it is definitely worth calling special. It is a story of Monica a young girl and her annoying little brother Peter, who on Halloween night take part in a great adventure when they enter a eerie looking house, where they meet a woman named Bella who sends to retrieve 5 masks before Halloween night ends. They must do so before the evil Dr. Screem gets his hands on them,or else he will use their mystical powers for his evil deeds. It was a really good book,I liked it a lot.I can say that the story was well structured and really easy to understand, also the way the characters faced some really scary situations was a real joy to read. This book is surely up there with the best Goosebumps books, surely one of the best (if not the best) Goosebumps Hall of Horrors book.

I don't really know what to say about this book, other then it had a good idea. It was kinda like Majoras Mask. I wish it would've explored the masks a little more ,and gave us more answers then questions .A decent but confusing read .Still no Haunted mask though.
