Kenny Rascoe's father died in the World War, his mother in the influenza epidemic. Now he lives in Plattsburgh during the week with his Uncle Raymond, a customs officer, and, when school is out, on his grandparent' Altona farm, where he discovers that his Uncle George is a bootlegger.
Raymond is a dependable source of security and advice, but George drives a flashy roadster and provides a contrast to life as a dairy farmer.
Kenny's classmates are impressed that he knows famous gangster Eddie Nickels and his beautiful flapper girlfriend, but the excitement comes to a sudden halt one night on a dark North Country road.
