Two genetically engineered beings unexpectedly arrive on Earth. Unlike most extraterrestrials depicted in science fiction, the pair is attractive, personable, and telegenic–the perfect talk show guests. They have come to Earth as ambassadors bringing an offer of partnership in a confederation of civilizations. Technological advances are offered as part of the partnership. But humans must learn to cooperate among themselves to join. Molly, a young reporter, and Paul, a NASA scientist, have each suffered personal tragedy and carry emotional baggage. They are asked to tutor the ambassadors in human ways and to guide them on a worldwide goodwill tour. Molly and Paul observe as the extraterrestrials commit faux pas while experiencing human culture. They struggle trying to define a romance and partnership while dealing with burdens of the past. However, implementing actual change is difficult for mankind. Clashing value systems and conflicts among subgroups of humanity erupt. Inevitably, rather than face difficult choices, fearmongers in the media start to blame the messengers. The Ambassadors is timely and up-to-date in the context of emerging genetic technology and division among humans. The genre is hard science fiction with elements of alien contact and genetics, plus romance and humor.
A set of humanoid aliens land at NASA in Florida claiming to be diplomats from another planet. Their mission is to encourage humans to work together to solve Earth's problems before they can offer help from their planet. This book outlines how the country and world reacts.
I read this with my buddy, Tiera, and she pointed out that you have to be in the mood to read a book like this. (I must not have been in the mood.) It is thought-provoking but because the writing is superficial, it is not that entertaining. I can see where the author tried - there is a romance between characters - but it is a little dry and there is more "tell" than "show" in the character development. That said, the portrayal of how humans reacted to the challenges in this book is probably pretty realistic. Unfortunately, it does not necessarily put human nature in a good light. It raises some good points but I didn't enjoy the writing style - thus the "it was ok" rating.
3.5 Stars for me. Its not very often that a book ends not only in an HEA but in an HEA for mankind... Unlike anything I've read before, this book addresses so many issues man kind has today even factoring in religion at times. I think that I'm used to more of the action and adventure type scifi and this book had more of "The Arrival," and "Contact" feel. Cover to cover the author's place many thought provoking issues in front of the reader allowing a reader to see from an outside prospective. It was fascinating at times. The world building was excellent.. considering that the author's were building more than one. Also, despite not having much knowledge regarding several of the scenes and issues I felt the author conveyed them in a way that didn't bog me down with jargon. I was easily able to read and accept what was going on without needing to go look things up on the internet lol.
I felt where the story lacked the most for me, was lack of emotion in the main characters. Fitzgerald and Isabella were understandable in there lack of emotional "range" so to speak but I also felt that Molly and Paul were a bit stilted and got worse the more time they spent with Fitz and Isabella. Both couples lacked in intensity and chemistry. I'm not sure if this was oversight by focusing so much on the plot that the characters depth suffered slightly. Considering that in the end the focus of the story turned toward the relationships human have with each other and their ability to work together, I really feel like the story could benefit from more range from the characters especially Molly and Paul.
In all honesty I think this would make a PHENOMENAL movie. This book was really focused on zooming in to the human condition as well as highlighting the fear mongering tactics of certain humans, and organizations. It was really good to see a book that puts humanity of the spot and where humans come out on top for a change!
Local authors I met at Holiday Fair. At the time I was reading a lot of sci/fi fantasy... Still am. I won't necessarily call this scifi though that is the closest category. I rather enjoyed this particular story as it felt similar to our recent worldly experience with COVID. Except insert individuals not from earth who may have a solution, if only people of earth would get over themselves and work together instead of the continued fighting against one another.
