Can a human heart withstand the flames of a dragon’s soul?
For centuries, the dragons of Kalleen have ruled the skies. Blessed by the goddess of fire, those born of her power are destined to exist within two worlds, while fully belonging to neither.
As the youngest daughter of the dragon queen, Amelia has always been torn between her humanity and winged form. In meeting Stephen, she found a blossoming love that gave her hope of finding balance.
A dream destroyed when her sister, and future queen, sets her sights upon the same man.
Forced from her lover’s side, Amelia embraces a self-imposed exile, taking refuge in the northern mountains. In this new life of solitude, she banishes painful memories by retreating to her dragon form, sheltering the wounded girl within.
Yet it is an isolation that cannot last, as the new dragon queen’s cruelty bears down upon the kingdom, allowing an ancient enemy to rise. Drawn from her banishment by the pleas of friends, Amelia must choose. Will she embrace the destructive beast within? Or draw upon the frail humanity that lingers dimly in her soul, in a desperate attempt to help her people, and mend a broken heart?

I listened to this in a day. The narrator has an engaging voice and I found it easy to get on with my activities while enjoying the story.
Kalleen is the youngest daughter of the dragon queen. When her sister takes the throne. Kalleen is sent away. She looses her home and her boyfriend, but the fate her sister has set upon her is worse than both.
Kalleen escapes and her eyes are open to a new world. One not protected by her royal blood. Once the truth is seen you can’t go back. Kalleen needs to find her true place in the world.
This was unique and interesting. The book talks us through the back stories of quite a few characters and in this case it worked well. The picture slowly built of a world of hope.
4.5 stars out of 5. I received an ARC as part of the audiobook tour. My review is honest and my own.
I. Loved. This. Book. So much!! Intrigue, passion, dragon shifters... this book has it all! The heroine, Amelia, was one I could easily root for, with her villains being of the purest evil you can't help but wish for their demise. The romance was a natural and spicy addition to the story, that successfully underscored the main plot rather than detract from it. Although, I'm not sure if I'm solidly on the LI's team, as there was definitely another eligible character I'm tempted to ship! Bottom line is this was a fantastic adult fantasy that I will be sure to recommend to any and all fantasy fans in the future. Now, on to book 2...
I thoroughly enjoyed Embracing the Dragon! It was exciting, beautifully-written, and unlike anything I've read before.
First of all, I really loved the world-building in this book. KL Bone gave us plenty of details about the setting and its history, but not once did I feel like the pace lagged because of it. Rather than the info dumps that many fantasy books have, the information was weaved throughout the story in a natural way. I felt like I knew plenty about the setting and the history without once having been bored by the info, which is a brilliant feat.
There was so much going on with the temples, the tension between shifters and non-shifters, Amelia's dreams, the story of Gwen and Gwain, and of course, all the details behind Amelia's exile. I loved it all! So much happened in such a short amount of time, yet nothing felt rushed. Absolutely amazing!
I also enjoyed the wonderful cast of characters. There were so many I found myself rooting for. I felt a great connection to the protagonist, Amelia, but it was actually two side characters (Gwen and Gwain) that I loved the most. KL Bone does a magnificent job telling us about their emotional past and tying it into what was happening to Amelia at present. At one point I even got choked up!
There really was so much to love about this book, but I feel the need to also applaud Bone's writing style. The words seemed to dance off the page and I could picture everything perfectly. Well done!
I HIGHLY recommend this book for any fans of fantasy, dragons, exiled princesses, and overall amazing writing!! I can't wait to read book 2 in the series!!
I absolutely loved this story. New author for me. Loved her writing style and this world of Dragon shifters that she has created. I was drawn in from the first word and hated when the story came to an end. Amelia is a strong and loving character who overcomes the betrayal of her own sister, the Queen. She fights for the people of her kingdom once she accepts how cruel her sister has become. Good action, suspense, twists and turns and romance. The narrator was so good. Loved her voice and accent. She breathed life into each if these characters. She did an amazing job.
Embracing the Dragon by K.L. Bone is a dragon shifter romance with a good deal of spicy romance. Admittedly, this is not my normal genre. I love fantasy and dragons, but I’ve not really delved into shifters, so I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable a read this was.
One of the aspects that really stood out to me was the mythos created around the shifters. The different types of dragons and the history of the lands and its people were very well contrived and intriguing. I actually wish there would’ve been even more on it. The descriptions of the actual transformations were incredibly vivid and believable, and I like that there were pain and drawbacks to it. I especially appreciated the dangers of not controlling the inner dragon.
I also really enjoyed the romance with Connor. Even when he didn’t initially want to, he cared for Amelia, and he supported her. There was great chemistry and some fun steam for the couple. I also like the platonic friendships Amelia formed with his mother, Chris, and the knight, Gwain. I love when fantasy stories allow for friendship along with the romance.
The one critique I have is regarding the main character, Amelia. I felt terrible for her considering all the betrayal and losses in her life, but my sympathy started to fade as the story went on. She, for me, never grew into the fierce protagonist I was expecting. She remained very naïve and forgiving, to an unbelievable degree.
This book will be perfect for anyone who loves shifter fantasies and romance with detailed sensuality.
I started this book and was honestly a little disenchanted in the first four chapters. I struggled with the story, but then the story took off. Instead of the day-to-day insights of a princess not interested in her life in the Kingdom, we started to see the injustice of her ruling sister. The book progressed along the logical plot path and gave us the expected love interest. A few things grabbed me as unlikely, yet still, the overall story held true to form. This one is for fantasy romance lovers sticking to humans and shape-changing human/dragon combination beings. Who doesn’t love a good dragon? Variations on dragons and the hint of another type throughout the book were fun. The thing that hit me the hardest as the reader, though, was the all-forgiving nature of our MC. After seeing what she saw and what her sister had intended to do to her, I’m not sure anyone would have been that forgiving. Perhaps it is the intended pure nature of the MC that the author wishes us all to see as we gear up for book two. My final take, four stars for this reader.
This book was an utter pleasure to read. It held my attention throughout and I never wanted to put it down. It succeeds in that it concludes the story arc it sets up while also preparing the reader for what is to come, a difficult balance to manage.
The world building is done so beautifully. It’s set up subtly and yet also fills the whole page. I learned more with each chapter and yet it never overtook the characters or the plot, again, another difficult balance to wrangle.
The characters felt real and complex. They reacted in ways that made sense to their personalities while at the same time endearing us to their plight. The pacing of realization was spot on, with characters taking the proper amount of time to process and decide.
Much like the dragons within this story, a proper balance is created and kept through the story and I can’t wait to see future adventures.
What a fantastic story. This was one of the books that kept me captivated from strat to finish. And the way the story is weaved is so clear and intriguing, you truly feel like you are there with the character and living the story with them. I absolutely love the world-building in this book. It's unique, it's complex, and at the same time so easy to grasp. I love the politics surrounding shifters and non-shifters, and find it makes so much sense in this world, not to mention the tension it creates. The story is very intriguing (and I loved the climax in particular), and Amelia is definitely my new favorite.
And the writing is like silk! I was quite busy this month and had only short periods I could use to listen to this book. But every time I picked it up again, it took me absolutely no time to be back in the headspace and I was immediately transported as if there had been no time in between.
This book was really good. I enjoyed K.L. Bone's writing style. The world building is fantastic and the character development is perfect.
Kaleen is the youngest daughter of the dragon queen. She has a somewhat easy going life. She has a boyfriend that devotes all his attention to her and she never has to worry about going hungry. When her sister takes the throne she banashes Kaleen. Kaleen has to come to terms with the fact that her sister is kind of evil and isn't good for the kingdom.
This book was intense and full of action and great characters!
If you can get the audiobook, I highly recommend it. The narrator did such a great job. She was very easy to listen to and follow along with even though I was doing a million other things while listening.
Princess Amelia must discover who she really is and what she can do. On this growth she gets the ability to save the kingdom from her evil sister the queen. This book hold hope and promise in its pages. You want Amelia to triumph over the evil queen.
This dragon shifter book was a great and enjoyable read! I mean any dragon is interesting but were dragons what’s not to like? That is if they are dum right and KL Bome certainly did that! She explores what can go wrong when a shifter can not control the dragon inside! A truly magical world. I would recommend this to any fantasy fan. Gave it four because I wanted more magic! Love the interview at the end!!
Absolutely recommend Embracing the Dragon. K.L. Bone is a gifted young author. Her writing style could be described as "down to earth". She uses words like other artists use paint to show a story or a moment in time. Amelia and Connor are a great couple. They share a unique gift and understanding of who they are both inside and out. The understanding and love they have for each other, to me, is the ideal of a good relationship. All and all, this is a great fantasy story. I am eagerly awaiting the next book. I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
A new book by one of my favorite authors K.L. Bone. This book is slightly different then her previous books, as it deals with Shifters - or those humans able to shift into Dragons. Brings back all my favorite stories as a child with Knights, Dragons, Damsels in Distress, Love, fear, power struggles... It is everything I love, yet it has K.L. Bone's unique epic twists I so love to read.
Opens with the impending coronation of the new queen and the story centers around her sister Amelia and her lover Lord Stephen. Aftr the coronation the story quickly develops and the princess is ordered to the temple to become the voice for the gods. Charged with the princesses safe delivery is a Knight, Sir Gwain. Troubled by his failure as a child and young Knight, fate offers him a chance at redemption, and he opts to save the princess from a fate worse then death, and restoring his broken promise from his childhood.
The princess flees her ordered duties which would cement the queen's future lineage, she flees for the safety of the mountains and meets other outcasts. Sometimes you find your best allies with outcasts.
In true K.L. Bone fashion, the truth is seldom what you think it is. This is a masterpiece of literature; amazing landscapes, epic scenery, valleys, forrests, mountains... It has it all - and DRAGONS!
If you love Dragons, Knights, Duty and Honor, you will love this book and series!

What can I say except thank you KL Bone for yet ANOTHER sleepless night. I’m going to have to start sending you my coffee bill. I suppose it’s my fault for starting one of her novels before bed. I still haven’t learned my lesson.
The story immediately drew me in. There was something to the way Bone describes that is elaborate yet understated. It’s enough that you are drawn in but not bored by rambling.
Amelia was a perfect leading lady. Yes she had her faults but they only made her tougher. They weren’t annoying the way some author’s write them but served a purpose. She was stronger than I would be in her situation after the betrayal and heartache she endured. Conner made me swoon almost instantly just like our heroine. I was glad to see how their relationship bloomed. It wasn’t rushed but didn’t drag on for three books until they finally saw their error.
This was my first dragon shifter book. I liked that there was a Black Rose feel to the story and timeline, but was still unique all on its own.
I was given this novel by the author in exchange for my honest opinion
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Way back in the day, I could not care less to offer any attention to polymorphing characters, let alone stories where half-or-more of the cast is able to transform into animals or mythical creatures. To the me of 10-to-15 years ago, they were nothing more than unstoppable, two-dimensional "Mary Sue"s who screamed of wish-fulfillment and power fantasy.
After reading K. L. Bone's Embracing the Dragon, I was able to confidently step up to Past Me and tell him to shut the hell up.
In the opening chapters, I get what I came for as alluded to by the blurb. Despite the book committing one of the deadly sins of opening chapters—"Starting the book with a dream sequence"—everything you expect is there. We are treated to just the right amount of expository prose and dialogue that puts you in the world of Kalleen, without getting bogged down by a derailing info-dump. I was especially grateful for this when it came to introducing the laws and lore behind the aforementioned polymorphing. The details behind how people can (or cannot) transform into dragons are only brought to the reader when it is relevant.
In addition to this, the descriptions of the transformation sequences evoke the visual very well. The author also manages to be consistent with the benefits and drawbacks of transforming as opposed to skirting the rules when it's convenient for the heroine. Even the fact that clothes are not factored into the transformation, winding up utterly destroyed during an untimely transformation, was not overlooked.
But enough about that, let's talk story!
The tale follows Dragon Princess Amelia. And if you just rolled your eyes when I said that, let me stop you right there. Because although it seems like she's got a good life and could do no wrong, as soon as her eldest sister takes the crown, Amelia's posh life in the palace doesn't last much longer. Piece by piece, everything she's ever known is taken from her. Crap hits the fan. Hard. Repeatedly. Overall, K. L. Bone did a fantastic job of crafting the meticulous rhythm which the tire iron slams into Amelia's kneecaps. By the time I was halfway through the book, I was saying, "Can things get any worse for her?"
Not that I wanted them to. But all of her hardships allowed me the space to better understand and root for her!
The allies Amelia meets along her journey have their plights as well, as the plot exposes hints of shady dealings coming from the palace. Many people throughout the land of Kalleen take issue with the caste and hierarchy that has been in place over the centuries; especially those who are not able to transform. I don't think I can dive too far into this without giving away any specific key plot points, so I'll leave it at that.
The story is solidly-constructed, decently-paced, and has a little something for everybody. It's got action, discourse, dragons, knights, intrigue, beautiful women, hunky guys, and solid lore. Even scenes where some of that squishy-jiggle boink-boink was going on were presented in beautifully-worded, saucy detail, and were never out-of-place.
However, the book is not without its flaws.
In addition to the "deadly sin" mentioned above, there is a sequence that takes the story back in time. Now, I do not have an issue with flashbacks. I do have an issue with the flashback being interrupted three different times; all three times used to quickly zip back to the present to summarize what I just read, and follow it up with someone asking the equivalent of "What happened next?" I personally feel that the overall impact of the flashback sequence was stunted by those interruptions.
The other thing that stood out to me was the repeated use of the sentence: "I don't understand." This exact sentence is used a whopping 28 times! And I could probably point to 20 of them that appear to be put in place just to pad the dialogue. It bugged me only a little at first, then I noticed it appearing twice on the same page, stated by the same character. This may seem like a nitpick, but when you're reading some expository dialogue and you know the phrase, "I don't understand" is going to show up on the next page, it gets tiring.
Do not let those last two paragraphs prevent you from picking this up, though! Embracing the Dragon has a great world and engaging characters that I want to return to! The book captivated me and kept me pleasantly entertained all the way up to me hearing the "DUN DUN DUUUNNNN!" in my head at the end of the closing chapter.
I have every intention of picking up Releasing the Dragon as soon as I create an opening in my queue for it. Until then, this book and where it left off will be itching the back of my brain. I look forward to it!
4 stars overall, 4 stars story, 4 stars narration A beautiful and emotional fantasy tale
The sweeping grandeur, regal narration, and solid world-building combine to make a beautiful fantasy romance. The story and narration were not quite perfect, but I like it well enough that I will definitely listen to Book #2 in this series. This Book #1 does not have a cliffhanger, but the next book will continue with the same heroine and her story. The audiobook ends at a good stopping point, but then it has a teaser for a certain plot development in the next book. The story is told in third person perspective mostly of Amelia but sometimes two other characters, Gwain and Connor. The story structure and amount of sorrow involved are like that of a YA romance, but the occasional moderately steamy love scene indicate that it is written for adults. The story centers around dragon shifter Princess Amelia, her tragic circumstances involving her evil older sister, and Amelia’s personal growth. She is monogamous. Overall, the story structure feels more like it is in the fantasy genre or women’s fiction with romance as a minor element. There are a few good action scenes as well.
I loved so many things about this book, but there were a few things that I didn’t like very much. I wish that it felt faster paced. Interesting plot developments did occur, but they were spaced out a little too far apart for me. There is a lot of sorrow in the story, which worked well but I would have liked a little more happiness for Amelia occasionally. She wallowed in her misery a little too much for me, but it fit well with the story. Although Amelia was supposed to be somewhat older, she acted like she was 19, and she emotionally developed slowly over the book. I love the narrator Kylie Stewart's regal-sounding English accent for the royals, and she did a great job overall. However, there were so many minor characters that eventually some of them started to sound alike. I guess we reached the limit of how many English-sounding voices that she could create. I had picked this audiobook because Kylie Stewart and K.L. Bone worked so well together as narrator and author on “Wicked Desires” in the Cursed Coven series, and I am glad that I picked this one up as well.
I enjoyed this new fairy tale twist on dragon shifters in a fantasy world. Thankfully, there were plenty of dragons and really good world-building in this novel. I recommend this to readers who like both paranormal romance and YA romance. The audiobook was beautiful and captivating.

Listened on Audible. The narrator’s accent was lovely. Her voice really fit the story and she gave an excellent performance.
Well-written and I loved the dragon shifter aspect. This is a pretty depressing book for the majority of the story, but the story did pull me in; I just would’ve liked a bit more happy. If you read the premise, you know things aren’t going to go very well for Amelia, so the whole beginning of the story I was cringing because I knew it would be brutal. Amelia’s sister is a horrible person; she’s a prime example of why monarchies shouldn’t automatically pass down to the eldest.
Amelia is forced to join the priestess temple; which isn’t a honor at all, some really messed up things happen there. Amelia is the main character we follow, but we get a couple other tales of woe. Lots of depressing stuff going on in this Kingdom; makes me not think to kindly for Amelia’s mother either. Amelia’s a tough cookie and manages to make a semblance of a life for herself, when she hears word of her sister’s corrupt practices.
I was liking Amelia for the whole story, but the way she acted when she was asked for help was deplorable. She was totally naive about her sister; very disappointed in how she handled it and other things further down the line. Her soft heart may come back to bite her in the butt. She does have some great strength; both mental and physical, but she lets her upbringing blind her to the truth at times.
I loved the bit of romance to the story. Love how supportive Connor is and the chemistry is there. Some steamy times!
Overall, I enjoyed the story and am looking forward to the next book!
K.L. Bone is the very talented story teller behind The Black Rose series, so it should come as no surprise that she knocked it out of the park with this book as well! I was entranced by the descriptive way she introduced the dragons from the very beginning. This is it your run of the mill Happily Ever After either! It is somewhat darker, just like all of her books are.
Now the important part, the characters! Be prepared to fall in love with Amelia. She is a great Female lead!! Sure she has her faults with being naive and stubborn. She also over comes those in order to save herself. Her loyalty to the ones she loves really free me into her and rounded out her personality. Maybe it is because of the betrayal or inspite of it that Amelia discovers who she is and becomes the ruler she is always meant to be! Conner is thrown into her life via destiny. He is so swoon-worthy with his smooth talk and charm!! I was just as in love as Amelia. It isn't a rushed romance but a slow-burn. I loved that as well!
This is not in conjunction with The Black Rose series, but if you read those books you are sure to love this one as well! K.L. Bone is a spellbinding story teller who is sure to have you begging for more by the end! I hope there is more to the story in the future!!! Well worth the one-click!

This is to date the most amazing dragon shifter book I have read! I fell head over heels in love with K.L Bone and her Black Rose Series! This book did not disappoint in any way!
The main characters in this story shift into dragons of different shades and colors! I love that they have the freedom to soar across the sky whenever they want! The freedom of doing that would be amazing, and reading about it in this book is just like experiencing it, the writing is that great!
I am a huge fan of the main character Amelia and her strong will and fierce love that she shows to everyone she meets regardless of whether they deserve it or not. She gets her heart broken by all those that she holds near and dear, all for the greed that comes with power when those given the power are not of pure heart, which is exactly what her sister Kaliyah has going on.
The love that comes into Amelia’s life by the act of destiny is one that we all wish we get to experience in our lives, even if for a short time. It pushes her to become what she was always meant to be, a rightful ruler and holder of power.
I hope this story continues because it is amazing and if you never read anything else, make sure you pick up this five star read! You will undoubtedly love it and devour it!

I have to say in the beginning of the audio I was taken aback by the lyrical quality of the narrators voice. I was not expecting it to feel so fantasy. There was a slight lilte to the voice. I almost ran from the audio but the story pulled me in. I almost ran from it because some of the voice in the beginning sounded very similar. Almost not being able to distinguished them. That did change. The story itself lured me in and kept me going. I found it to be more of Amelia/Elizabeth being more of her human than her dragon. I did find that along her journey she encountered some true friends. Right when I was getting immersed in. That was the end of the book. I do want to see more of where the kingdom heads next.
****** I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by K.L. Bone. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
While the dragon shifting concept was very cool, I didn't feel like it was used very creatively. For a romance novel, I'm surprised nothing was done with dragon forms... I also did not appreciate how the author made repeated use of the "six months later" thing as I'd rather get at least a vague overview of what happened during the passing time. The exceedingly naive MC's character arc wasn't very convincing either. She came out entirely too civilized after a time being semi-feral and I have no idea where she was getting fancy velvet and silk clothing in a poor mountain village or how her hair never became a tangled rats nest. Magic I guess?
Side character arcs were better done (I'd have read a whole novel detailing Gawain's two chapters of backstory).
However (and trigger warning), my biggest complaint with this book was that there were about 5 too many times the author used rape, implied rape, or threat of rape to move the plot along and there were so many better options to try.
Audio review Love this audio . First time I heard from both the author and narrator. The author knows how to draw you in the story and keep you listening till the end . There is a lot of suspense and background story in it. The story is full of intriguing little things that make it into the whole story . Heroine is Amelia , who is a dragon shifter . Half dragon , half human . Amelia is hurt from hurtful acts from her sister , the future queen , to top it off her sister wants the same man Amelia has fallen in love with . Amelia is not wanted by her sister the queen for Amelia was born on the wrong time of day as proper . Amelia decision is to go into the mountains and forever be a dragon . Amelia is called into battle , to battle her sister the queen for the future of mankind. Grab it and see does Amelia triumph over the evil sister.
The narrator was good, her voice was clear, smooth and strong. She was steady in the story
Royal dragon shifter princess blessed by the goddess of moonlight. Betrayed by sister and love. Exiled and on the run. Dragons are creatures of legend with desires to protect self and others. Need to find balance with control.
Dragon Shifters...Grief...Betrayal...Broken Heart...Dedication...Protection...Love...Family Drama...Political Upheaval...Troubled Kingdom...Battle for Control...Restitution...
Well-developed characters, some to love and some to despise. Detailed world-building. I was captivated from the beginning. And, dragon shifters! Loved the storyline and can hardly wait to see how the series continues in book 2.
"No pain. In safety shall I keep you. In my protection shall you be until the end of time." "Protect. Save girl." "Lies cannot harm a dragon." "Sanctuary could become a prison." "Embrace the creature within, but never let the dragon embrace you." "To be with you at all costs."
EMBRACING THE DRAGON was such a great PNR dragon shifter romance! Amelia is the youngest daughter of the former dragon queen. As her mother has been dead for a year now, it is time for her older sister, Kaliyah, to assume the throne. The descriptions and world building are top notch, with lovely ball gowns, great halls, orchestras and chandeliers. I loved the descriptions of dragon battles and the sense of timelessness in this dragon fantasy. After Kaliyah ascends the throne and cannot be challenged for a certain period of time, she takes certain actions against Amelia, and her true colors are shown. I loved the treachery and deception and secrets. There was so much history, from Gwain and Gwen, to the other dragons Amelia later meets (trying not to be too spoilery!) This is a steamy and romantic and delicious book that I loved from start to finish. So much great drama and royal betrayals and wonderful twists. Excited for book two! 5/5 stars.
Audiobook review: Embracing the Dragon (The Flames Of Kaleen, Book 1)
Author K.L.Bone created a vivid cosmos with well detailed world building descriptions & settings. I absolutely love dragon shifter novels and this is one of my all time new favourites. Character's creations are canny, cliquish, complex, & eloquent. An array of characters including damsels in distress, dragons, knights, a princess, & a queen. A magnum opus piece of literary works with epic landscapes & scenes. Power struggles, duty & honor, love & fear all encased in a mythological cosmos. With electrifying twists braided into the narrative. Looking forward to listening to the next audio in this sirenic series.
Narator Kylie Stewart draws you in with her captivating english accent which is my favourite accent. Her tone & pace flows through smoothly and flawlessly. A self-indulgence definite relisten.
I enjoyed this book from the start. Amelia is the younger sister so she never anticipated life changing from her. Her sister was to be queen. She was going to go forward with life and her love as it had been. Except, that isn't the plan the new queen has for her. The narrator did a great job at conveying feelings. My only issue was the pacing was a bit slow for me.
The dragon shifter aspect of it was amazing. I loved that! Amelia has such a crushing time of it at the start, I felt so terrible for her. She is strong though. I think my favorite character was the captain and the decisions he made. Overall, it was a fabulous story.
It was a 4/5 for me. I cannot wait to see where this goes next.
