Unfortunately the author lost me about 10% of the way through. Either there is another book in this series that has to be read first to understand who the key players are or the author intends for the reader to be lost. Trying to keep track of everyone, their roles and how they knew each other was too much too quickly.
In theory, this story is totally my jam... a romantic suspense with action and adventure.
I tried to stick with it, I really did. This is super multi-dimensional story with many many characters and many many details. The timeline is on like week 2 when we are 30% in (this is not am exact figure, it's just how it felt).
I admit that I got lost in all the detail. We are essentially given the M/Cs CV and portfolio details 3 times by the same people in 3 different conversations. At one point I jumped ahead 50% and the same details were being relayed again.
I was very disconnected from this story and never warmed up to it.
I will say this: Assuming all of the information regarding BUD/S and medicine and art and security companies is factual, the author did an amazing job on research. I always appreciate the hard work an author puts into their craft. Not every book can be my cup of tea.
Secure Desire is the first book in the Chase Security series by R.L Dunn, and is a really great action-packed romantic suspense- with mystery, murder, intrigue, violence, brutality, spills and thrills, hidden agendas, sinister plots, clandestine ops, covert organizations, private security, family, friendship, Politics, loss, betrayal, chemistry….. and soooo much more. Ian Chase is an ex-Navy SEAL turned successful business man, now heading up the Chase Group, a billion dollar global empire in the venture capital and private security sector. He has never forgotten a brief encounter with a beautiful, but engaged, art historian he met six years earlier. So, imagine his surprise when he unexpectedly encounters her again- only now she’s no longer engaged or married, and works for the FBI. He knows there is more to the story, and to her, than she’s letting on. Secrets surround her. And he’s determined to get to the bottom of it all. Cassiopeia Ellis remembers meeting Ian, and he’d made quite the impression on her. But she remembers very little else from that night. She suffers from amnesia and is haunted by nightmares from a very traumatic experience. Running into Ian again after all these years, both thrills and terrifies her. She still feels their electric chemistry and magnetic pull- but she is deathly afraid that he’ll discover her secret and then won’t want anything to do with her. Much better to push him away, than to suffer the pain and embarrassment of rejection. But Ian has arrived at a point where he is able to really help Cassie- as someone seems to want her dead. Can Ian protect her and keep her safe? Who has targeted Cassie, and why? What happened to her six years ago, and what has that got to do with the present threat? All the answers to these questions, and more, can be discovered between the covers of this suspenseful read! I really enjoyed this book. I was intrigued right from the beginning, totally engrossed the whole way through. There were some shocking, emotional, and violent moments that had me anxiously reading, on the edge of my seat to discover if things would turn out ok. There was a lot going on, and so much to keep track of, too. R.L Dunn has written a complex, multi-layered story full of clever interconnected details which gives it a real unpredictability- she kept me guessing the whole way through. I had so many scenarios running through my head, trying to piece everything together and work out what was going on. I though that aspect of the writing, and story, was really well done. I loved Ian and Cassie, they were so easy to like and invest in. I really felt for Cassie and what she’d been through, and what she was going through!!! OMG- R.L Dunn really put her through the wringer. And then there’s Ian- his protective Alpha hotness was swoon-worthy. I also love Kieran, and Monique, Lil and Declan, Luke and Rachel…. And Hunter, such a sexy man- I’d sure like to know more about him! The story was meticulously researched, or the author has experience in the field- with all the medical terminology, equipment, and medications that were used in the story, as well as the security lingo and weaponry etc. The story was detailed and vividly descriptive. The only issue I had, was that there are a LOT of characters in the story- I counted over 130 NAMED characters- which was a lot to keep track of! I didn’t think they all required naming, especially passers-by on the street/hallway, or the nurse at her station etc- especially since many don’t any play a further part in the story. It just was a lot to take in- I like to remember names and places during a story, especially when I’m trying to piece everything together, like in this book- so I found the ‘extra names’ a little ‘messy’ to the overall tight plot-lines. This didn’t detract too much from the storyline, but it was a little distracting, and at times, confusing. I am really looking forward to reading more of R.L Dunn’s work.

Secure Desire is book one in R.L.Dunn’s new series, the ‘Chase Security Series’ and follows Ian and Kieran, the Chase brothers and their team of former Navy SEALS and other military officers. This story follows Ian and whether he and FBI agent Cassie, who specialises in stolen art get a second chance at love. Navy SEAL Lieutenant Commander Ian Chase and his brother resumed control of their private security company and the rest of their international conglomerate, Chase Group, following a last brutal tour in Afghanistan. Ian and Cassie meet whilst she is undercover at a charity function but they had in fact already met six years earlier. Unfortunately the same night she met Ian was the night she experienced an awful trauma and seeing him again stirs up not only the feelings she had for him but also memories of that awful time. Meanwhile Ian also has feelings for Cassie but knows nothing of the trauma she has been through. Repressing her memories had actually kept Cassie safe but once her enemies realise she is remembering they act quickly to attempt to stop her talking. Ian has to keep Cassie safe, however she remains reluctant to share her past with him which may prevent them having a future together. This was much more than just another second chance at romance story it was fast paced and action packed. The plot had plenty going on in it to keep me happily turning the pages and it had me hooked from page one. The storyline has drama, suspense, mystery and of course romance. The story flows nicely and the characters are well defined and relatable. I was fully immersed in the storyline and felt well connected to the main characters. I enjoyed the romance aspect between Ian and Cassie and after all they go through during the story I was hoping they would get their happy ever after. I look forward to some of the background characters getting their own stories in future books in this series.
I thought the plot had a good plot, murder, intrigue, suspense, a bit of romance. It was quite fast paced, even though there were more than a few but glaring grammatical errors. My problem was with Cassie, and how her character was portrayed. She was stubborn to the point of stupidity. After being ill for most of the book and constantly pulling out her feeding tube. Keeping stuff to herself and constantly questioning Ian's motives after he went above and beyond was truly annoying. Honestly, after all she had been through, she should have died. But in the last part of the book, she drugs Ian and goes after the bad guys singlehandedly despite being quite ill. That was so unbelievable. And then make her character be pregnant and have an actual viable and healthy pregnancy after she fell over the railing onto the floor with a big drop. Unrealistic especially with all the drugs she had been given. I too am also unsure about this fertility plot by getting her pregnant. And then the Russians and the artwork. Some of it was wrapped up a tad too neatly in the end. With the entire book focusing on the all this other stuff. Like I said the plot was good but it could use some improvement.
There is so much filler in this book. I figured it out in the first 10% of the book. Don't get me wrong, I love a good romantic suspense novel and I don't mind suspending disbelief for a while, but this was ridiculous! I just can't with this book. She should have died so many times. And using her actual identity as her cover when she's living under a different identity? No way that could go wrong... The basic plot and idea of a strong female lead who has gone through so much trauma & was dealing with SH and was kicking butt as an FBI agent was great. But the actual story reads more like a rough draft. Save yourself the time and read something else. There are so many better romantic suspense books out there.
I should have known when the book started with several pages of key players that I was going to be lost. There was just too many characters, I couldn't keep track of who was who. I also really struggled with the whole plot. **spoiler** I'm not sure how this really counts as second chance romance when they met for literally less than 10 minutes 6 years ago. There wasn't too much romance, just a MMC throwing money around for healthcare and security (I guess in this day an age that actually is romance ). The whole book was a struggle, unfortunately. I really liked the summary and was excited to start the book. Also I feel like every troupe was included and there should have been some major trigger warnings.
A well written book with complex characters with lots of layers. Ian Chase is a former Navy seal who has returned home and is helping his brother run the family security business. He becomes romantically involved with Cassie who has been through many horrible experiences. A romantic suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The plot is very detailed with lots of drama and danger. I read an advance copy and voluntarily chose to review this book.
Secure Desire is the opening move of Chase Security Series by R.L. Dunn. It is my first read by this writer and as I was feeling for some action packed romance then I decided to take a chance on the series (I love series as it gives me hope for more great books to come … add to this the family aspect and I am more than willing to take the chance). Secure Desire gives us plenty of mystery, murder, violence, hidden agendas, clandestine ops, family, friendship, explosive chemistry and so much more! The first brother up is Ian Chase who is an ex-Navy SEAL heading a billion dollar venture capital and private security empire with a global reach. Six years earlier he met briefly a beautiful art historian Cassiopeia Ellis. He remembers her but he ‘let her go’ as at the time she was engaged … now, meeting her again, she is working for the FBI and a free agent (not engaged or married) … Add to this the fact that Cassie remembers meeting Ian but not much else from that night except the intense nightmares that she is haunted by. Their chemistry is explosive but she is a bit hesitant as she does not remember much of that night and is concerned he would not want to have anything to do with her if her secrets come out … The writer takes us on a mad rollercoaster ride and I suggest you hold on tight to your seat and take notes as there are many characters and who knows how many of them we will encounter when we get to the next book (which I already have downloaded and waiting for me!)! Come along and join the chase and you will not regret the hours you’ll spend with Ian and Cassie and co!
Secure Desire (Chase Security Series Book 1) By R.L. Dunn 5 out of 5 stars
I loved reading the book Secure Desire (Chase Security Series Book 1) by R.L. Dunn. It is a story that pulled me in from the beginning and didn’t let me go until the final page. It is a thriller that had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. I loved reading about the characters of Chase and Cassie. Cassie is an intelligent, strong, and independent woman. She is an FBI agent and does her job well. She is haunted by a past in which she feels she will never be free. Chase is handsome, charming, and the owner of a private security company. He is very attracted to Cassie. He also finds out that she has enemies that will do anything to get rid of Cassie. Will Chase be able to keep Cassie out of danger? Will he be able to convince her of the deep connection he feels for her? Read this book to find out. This is an amazing story that once starts only has one speed, full-ahead. It takes you on an unforgettable journey. It also has many additional characters that are helpful to Cassie and Chase. They would do anything to assist them. Then some have their evil agenda and will do anything to see that Cassie doesn’t survive. This is a book that is written in such a way that I felt like I was right there with the characters. Don’t miss out on an exciting, suspenseful, and thrilling story. I highly recommend it.
Secure Desire (Chase Security Series #1) by R.L. Dunn
Dunn has a way with bringing characters to life. This was a fantastic read and can't wait for book 2. This is the first book in the Chase Security Series and my first read by the author.
Cassiopeia Ellis, Cassie, has lost her entire family and now people are coming after her. Something happened to her six years ago and she remembers bits and pieces. The quote I choose for Cassie is: “I promise you’re not. Life is too short, and there are tons of things to be afraid of. One thing I am very sure about is I’m not afraid of you.”
Ian Chase runs a high-end business. He met Cassie six years ago, but when he runs into her again he knows he has to have her. He wants to know everything about her, but things are tough in the beginning. The quote I choose for Ian is: "Some other tidbits? I know you prefer tea over coffee. Your favorite snack is gelato. I know you have a passion for high heels. Your favorite scent is honeysuckle. I know you love art—even pig art. You crinkle your nose when you’re thinking. Christian calls you ‘bunny’ because you used to have big ponytails that looked like bunny ears. You are a capable, brave woman, the strongest woman I ever met. I know I want to spend my life getting to learn everything about you and making you happy. When you are well enough, I want to take you to my bed and love you like you deserve to be loved.”
Secure Desire Chase Security Series Book 1 By R.L.Dunn ☆☆☆☆☆ This is a full length novel, and can be read as a standalone. I for one will be looking for book 2. This book is for those 18 and older due to the adult theme. A spectacular start to this Romantic Suspense Series.
This is Cassie and Ian's story. Cassie is probably the strongest heroine I have ever read about. She is Amazing. She works with the FBI, specializing in stolen art. She really knows her stuff when it comes to protecting herself from her creep of a boss. He is working her last nerve, this could be dangerous. But only time will tell. Ian Chase, Wow he has been smitten but is trying with everything he has not for fall for Cassie. He is professional and puts his job first. But I know he would like to…. Well you will just have to read the book to find out what he really wants to do. He is a strong character in this story. You can't help but fall in love with him
R.L. Dunn! WOW this book is intense! Starting with the first page. It is a fast read only because you can't set it down until you have read the last page. R.L. Dunn has the perfect characters for this book. You will either love them or hate them. There is no middle of the road here. There are also no spoilers. You will have to read it to believe it. I just know I want to be like Cassie, and have Ian as a close friend. Well Done R. L. Dunn! I can't wait to read the next book in this series...
Secure Desire was a 5+ star read and A Chase Group Novel. All I can say is wow, I was pulled in right from the beginning.
Cassie is an FBI agent who has had a couple of huge tragedies in her life. She has closed herself off from any type of relationship, she’s damaged. Ian Chase met Cassie six years prior and was smitten with her, seeing her again now has brought the feelings back and he starts to pursue her. Ian is an ex-Navy Seal who owns his own successful private security team and I might add is extremely hot.
Cassie remembers meeting Ian but had suffered a traumatic event that has caused her to shut down and have panic attacks. She’s afraid to get close to anyone for fear of rejection.
You won’t like me once you know what I am - Cassie
There is a huge twist at a charity event that had my emotions all over the place. I will warn it does get graphic and had me cringing at times. My heart went out to Cassie and everything that she went through. I was on the edge of my seat pretty much the whole time waiting to see what was coming next. Can Ian and his team keep Cassie safe? Will Cassie finally let Ian into her heart?
There is so much more to this read. I loved all of the characters, they all added great elements to the story. Some I didn’t care for, some I loved. I can’t wait to see more from several of them. I highly recommend this read and I look forward to reading more from R.L. Dunn. I need more from the Chase Group. I loved them.
Secure Desire by R. L. Dunn was my first read by this author and I can’t really find any reason to not stalk this authors page to find out when the rest of the series is available. I absolutely loved this book. The characters were strong real men and the they knew how to keep their women safe.
Ian chase is a great main character. He has a chance meeting with Cassie and all the feelings he felt 6 years prior come rushing back. 6 years ago she wore an engagement ring when he met her, and now she doesn’t. He convinces Cassie to go for coffee with him but he doesn’t realize even though Cassie is single, she is very much unavailable.
Cassie is working an assignment with the FBI and is placed at a table with people who are part of her past that she cannot really remember. Well that night, everything come crashing down. Cassie life changes in one horrible night. There are many attempts on her life and with each one, I was on the edge of my seat. The book had ALOT of characters. Some were known by first name, last name or military nickname so sometimes I had to reread the page to fully understand what I read. This was a dark read when everything is brought up from Cassie’s past and the torture she endured. I’m usually not a fan of dark reads but this was a great read and loved it. I cannot wait for more in this series to get some more of these character!!
Secure Desire: A Chase Group Story by R.L. Dunn is a great story that is fast paced and there is a lot happening but it is enthralling and interesting and it certainly had me engrossed and invested. The suspense and mystery, lies and deceit are bad enough but the life of one woman had literally torn her apart. But the men who literally hold her life in their hands never want to see her go through anything like this again. There is intrigue and horror, alpha hot men and strong women, love and anger there are the monsters who think they are above everybody who will sicken you as you journey along with the wonderful characters that will melt your heart. I spent a lot of time with my heart in my throat and my jaw clenching whilst reading this book but there were times when my heart leapt with joy.
Cassie’s life was just coming together when a new assignment changed all that but what she doesn’t know is that the monsters from this assignment where the ones who changed her life six years ago. Now they have found her again her life will never be the same again. But one person who has just found her will do everything in his power to protect her.
This is another great read for me this year. R.L. has done a great job with this story and I look forward to reading more.
Secure Desire is the first book in the Chase Security Series by R.L. Dunn. It’s the first time that I have read any of this author’s work but it certainly will not be the last. I was enticed by the blurb on this book and thought it would be the kind of book that I’d enjoy, so decided to give it a try. I’m so glad that I took a chance on this book as I absolutely loved it. This book is filled with drama, mystery, murder and intrigue and had me hooked from the very beginning and did not let me go. The author takes you on a fantastic journey and you just don’t know where to story is going to go next. It’s a very well written and obviously well thought out storyline which flows very well and keeps the reader fully engaged. There is quite a large amount of characters in addition to Ian and Cassie, the 2 main characters but all have an important part to play and I’m sure we’ll see a lot more of some of them in the future books in the series. I adored both of the main characters Ian and Cassie. Cassie is so broken and Ian is just the perfect guy to put her back together again. Can I also add that the sexy times between them are smoking HOT! I really can’t wait to read more of this series as Secure Desire really had me hooked and I loved every minute of it.
This was a great action packed story. It contains everything I love. Mystery, romance, a dominant protective man and a strong independent woman. It was an amazing read that kept me gripped from page one. The characters are so well written you can't help but feel the feelings they are experiencing.
Cassie is a strong independent woman who has suffered trauma in her life. After losing her family in an accident she was all alone. When she was attacked it changed her whole outlook on life and the people in it. She finds it hard to trust and let down her guard. Six years later she is working with the FBI. With a boss that is constantly harassing her sexually it makes all her old fears come back to the surface. Can she trust any man?
Ian is a successful business man of Chase Security. His job is protection and when he meet Cassie straight away his feelings towards her become more than just bring protective of her. He senses something bad in her past but until she confides in him he doesnt know what that is. Can he prove to her that not all men are the same? Can she let herself trust a man ever again?
With danger out to get her and troubles at work with her boss can Cassie trust Ian enough to let him protect her before its too late.
When one night imprints in your mind and has never really forget it, but when a chance meeting with the same person stirs up those feelings again, do you go for it?
Ian is a ex-navy seal who has embarked on new horizons with new businesses, but when he meets a blast from his past, will he give love a chance or stay well away.
Cassie is trying to rebuild her life, after an attack she has been left with amnesia, until Ian comes into her life she remembers some of their history but this causes her to have anxiety of what will happen next.
This is the first book in this series and I thoroughly enjoyed the aspects of mystery, intrigue and interlaced with romance. The book held my attention throughout and was eager to race through to get the end on who was after Cassie and the reason. Cassie and Ian's characters where well developed and the chemistry came through the story.
The story itself was well written and weaved through the suspense and mystery well. I really enjoyed the fresh plot as some of these ex military can be the same but this was a great twist on this genre. I definitely recommend this story and can't wait to read the next installment.
I must say I am struggling a tad with exactly where or how I want to place this book on a star scale. I have never had the pleasure of reading anything R.L. Dunn prior to Secure Desire so I was completely new all of her writing style. Dunn has one hell of a knack for detailed writing. While I loved that most of the time I felt like I was right there with the characters and in the moment I could have done without some of it sometimes. It felt a tad heavy. Only because I wanted to get to the the point and found myself several times confused in the novel. There is immaculate research done clearly evident as well, but again, I don’t want to feel as if I am in the History Channel.
Bottom line, I adored the story for what it was, and found myself falling in love with Ian and Cassie quickly. I was invested in them from the get-go and was on the edge of my seat wondering how everything was going to turn out for them in the end. Which I must say was quite unpredictable as well! Another fantastic plus. I look forward to checking out more of the Chase Group Stories and whatever else is available or will be to come from R.L. Dunn.
Wow! What an amazingly almost thriller romance, instead of romantic suspense! Ms. Dunn, while you gave us some clues throughout the novel, never did I expect the twist and turns of a thriller, it was enthralling! Cassie, named after a star, and just as strong and the strength to live just as long! Such an amazing young woman, almost as one of the protagonist's stated, (paraphrase) nine lives, and she hasn't lived them all yet! Ian, amazing man whom fell for a young woman years ago, but his morals saw a ring and just simply did the correct thing, nothing. Six years later, they meet again, Cassie has no memory of much, yet is drawn to Ian, and she no longer is wearing a ring! From here is becomes a long and difficult road, something occured six years ago of which Cassie has no memory. Now, without giving anymore away, allow me to say, it was simply one thing after another, and evil exists on Every level. Such evil I didn't expect! I was blown away by the author's ability to write such a compelling story, a thriller really, with such detail, and frankly such emotion! Again, Wow! I must read more... Sooooooo .... NEXT!
When I first read the blurb for this book it sounded like a book I would really enjoy, I love a Navy SEAL story, there is just something about these characters and overall I enjoyed what I read. I will say that it is a book that is quite complex in its storyline so I wouldn’t say it was an easy read, I did have to re-read the beginning so I could fully understand what was going on but once I settled into the story it picked up in my opinion. There were quite a few things going on so I think you have to be prepared to be able to concentrate on what you are reading, it isn’t a book you can easily dip in and out of. The characters were good, they were well thought out and planned and the authors writing was pretty detailed, there was a good mystery running through the story which definitely had me keep turning the pages to find out what was going to happen. I don’t think there was as much romance in the story as I anticipated but it was definitely a good mystery! I would like to read more from this author again in the future.
Secure Desire is the story of Ian Chase and Cassie Modine. Cassie is an FBI agent with a secret. Ian is a former SEAL who now runs Chase Security, they meet through her adopted family. When Cassie’s secret starts to come back and creates trouble for her life Ian jumps into action to help her and the sparks eventually start to fly. I enjoyed the premise of this story and thought it would be a great book. I want so bad to say I loved it but while I did enjoy the story I couldn’t help but feel like I was missing a huge part of the story. Almost like there should have been another book before this one that would give you a little more background and insight into what was happening and how all the characters were related. I hoped it would all come together by the end but I still felt like I was missing part of the story. I gave this 4 stars but honestly for me it was more like 3.5 stars.
