It’s 99 AD and Trajan is Emperor of Rome. Christianity is looked down on, and Trajan wants nothing more than to see the new religion’s leader, Clement, killed. And he knows exactly how to accomplish his capture a Christian, and torture him into submission.Meanwhile, 15-year-old Marcus is struggling with his faith, even after a humiliating event in his past. When Marcus is arrested and imprisoned, he must choose between his faith and his life. Will he bend under torture? Or will he make the ultimate sacrifice?
Very well written; I was extremely impressed! It was quick paced and did not lack in details. Portrays the spirit of Christian times very clearly and yet is easily read.
Marcus’ Last Stand by the talented young author Brianna Zonneveld is a wonderful story of bravery, faith, and perseverance to the end, with the hope of what is to come. Although this story is set in the year 99 AD, it provides a look into temptations we are all familiar with because they speak to our human nature. We all want to find acceptance. No one wants to stand out as being different. But the early Christians, as well as Christians today, need the courage to witness to the truth regardless of opposing views…or negative consequences. Younger children will enjoy having this story read to them, and older children and adults will enjoy reading it for themselves. It provides a great example of the kind of faith and courage we each need to strive for, a faith that overcomes fear…even of death. I also admired the illustrations by the talented artist Emily Brett. They are so beautiful and detailed!
