This is one of the best lean books I've ever read. It's really hard to rate lean books because I've read so many (content is diminishing returns). It's not that the material is groundbreaking (although it would be if this was the first interaction with lean), but it's written so well. The flow is really intuitive, and the writer makes it simple. The author effortlessly flows from the big picture to the practical.
Great insight and review on the spirit that we can all benefit from no matter our role in a company
Liked the explanation and reiteration of lean thinking principles to emphasize how to teach it to others. The fact that they go into detail on how to be on the other side of this knowledge helps to more effectively present it to new learners. This is critical spirit that we all can benefit from inheriting. Owner, President, CEO, Director, Frontline management, Frontline production, quality, sales, HR, coaching etc. We all can help it better ourselves thus the entirety of a company and community.
Of the three books I had to read for my Problem Solving and Continuous Improvement class I felt like this one was definitely the best. It explained the concept in easy to follow terms the were simple to understand and implement. If you are looking for a way to understand lean production and how you can use it to improve your business I highly recommend this book.
Lean Production Simplified First Edition (2002) was one of the first books I read when I knew that lean was the path I wanted to take. Written by a former Toyota Canada manager/leader, it translates the Toyota Way into something easily understandable to those and other industries. The topics in this book go an inch deep but cover a mile wide regarding what the Toyota Production System is all about. Reading this will not prepare you to implement lean, but it will provide you a foundation regarding what makes successful lean organizations work.
In 2020 an audiobook version of this was released. The audiobook had no companion PDFs with it. As someone who's been practicing lean for nearly 15 years and who has read this book, I didn't find the missing PDFs a problem; however, a green person to these concepts would require some visuals. If you are deciding between a book or audio - Choose the book. Also, the 2020 version had many updates, however, I don't believe enough of the book changed to make my first edition obsolete.
Lean production simplified is a powerful and sterling book. It has given me an intel about the Toyota Production System. The author has the exact knowledge, the experience of the Toyota production system. His experience in this field is remarkable. The book delivers a comprehensive view of lean management. You could use this technique in any other commodity other than the automobile. The objective of the book is to show how lean manufacturing works. People working in production should read at least once.
I have nothing to compare it to as it was my first venture into reading a book dedicated to lean and the Toyota way. It presented the topic clearly and in accessible way offering some good examples of templates to support Kaizan circles and other lean principles. Perhaps not unsurprisingly given the authors background it did come across as a little sycophantic to the Toyota cause which given the more recent manufacturing/quality issues they've suffered is harder to take than it once might have been had the book been written more recently.
This book is a great resource for those of us in manufacturing positions. There are many reasons why the TPS (Toyota Production System) is World renown and this book takes these principles and makes them easy to understand and apply! I have made all the supervisors and engineers who work for me read this, and they all appreciate it and implement things from it.
I read this book when I was first learning about lean production. At the time I found it to be a great resource to understand many of the concepts and techniques that underpin this. As the title suggests, it is a simplified overview, and probably too simple for anyone who has move than a couple of years experience in lean production.
This is a good primer for the basic lean concepts and principles. The text is a bit dry at times, but very informative. This book is probably best for those starting a lean transformation or wanting to gain a basic understanding of lean concepts. Even so, this book has a foundation in the fundamentals and is fairly short, so it is definitely worth the read.
