Yaassa Jones’ ex-boyfriend Chejuan Jackson aka Chee has serious problems letting go. Although their two year relationship has been over for three months Chee refuses to accept it. He actually climbs into Yaassa’s bed at night to cuddle next to her, somehow finding his way into her apartment no matter how many times she changes the locks. What was supposed to be just a casual fling evolved into something way more dangerous!

Afraid of actually falling in love Yaassa always played it safe in all of her relationships, vowing to never become too attached to any man she was dealing with. But while still experiencing the afterglow from a heated love session Yaassa agrees to be exclusive with Chee. Initially the relationship went well but later on down the line Chee became possessive and violent causing their break up.

In his heart Chee knows that he’s wrong for his actions but he just can’t risk losing Yaassa. Having serious abandonment issues stemming from his mother’s drug addiction and subsequent death and then the death of the loving grandmother who took him in, Chee refuses to let another woman that he loves slip away. Succumbing to her sympathy for Chee’s rough childhood Yaassa gave Chee way too many chances to change. But eventually no longer able to deal with Chee’s insecurities or the physical abuse Yaassa finally ends the relationship. Or at least she thinks she has. But Chee is unrelenting and he’ll have Yaassa all to himself no matter what the cost!

Possession was an engrossing and quick read. Author Da’Neen Hale delves into both Yaassa and Chee’s characters and does an excellent job explaining the motivations for their actions. Showing just how easy it is for a woman to unknowingly become caught up in an abusive relationship. It also shows how a man who actually claims to love a woman can then turn around and put his hands on her.

What did you like best about the book?
The premise was well thought out and I enjoyed the depth into which Chee’s character was explored. Especially how his childhood contributed to the way in which he treated women.

What did you dislike about the book?
Yaassa’s fear of a committed relationship hindered her from getting with Domino but somehow never interfered with her from committing to Chee. This pretense was never fully explained in the novel and it will leave readers scratching their heads as to why.

How could the author improve this book?
The book could have been longer at only a little over 200 pages, an expansion of the secondary characters like Domino and Tone would have been helpful.

There's a Thin Line between Crazy and Deranged!

He'll change.
It'll get better.
He didn't mean it.
He's had a hard life.

Like so many women, Yaassa never thought she'd be that chick caught up in an abusive relationship. Never in her wildest dreams did she think that hooking up with that fine dude from the club (you know the one I'm talking about, the one looking all good and stuff!) would turn into a nightmare; a vicious cycle of slaps, punches, bruises and sick days. Yaassa knows that this is not right and that she has to get away from him, but thinking it and doing it are two very different things. And when you're someone else's `possession' is the choice to leave even yours anymore? Yaassa will soon find out.

Picking up on an issue that society many times sweeps under the rug, this captivating, moving and well-controlled drama follows the dysfunctional relationship of Yaassa and Chee. Hale's vivid writing made this story come alive. Other books are often good at describing abusive behavior, but what I really enjoyed about this book is that it described not only what Chee did, but why he did it and what he thought.

One small quibble that did not detract from the book but I must mention: the editing. It wasn't bad. Trust, I've read worse. But there were enough errors for me to take notice. Tighten up on the editing and the sky's the limit.

Overall, this was a very promising and solid debut for Hale. I recommend "Possession." It was very easy to read and held my attention making for a rewarding read. I will be checking for Hale's next release.

"Author Da'Neen Hale is stepping into the ring swinging with her highly anticipated debut novel Possession.

Possession takes you back to a time when Biggie bumped in the club and the dudes looked fly in their Nike warmup suits with the shoes to match. I loved taking this trip down memory Lane.

Possession is a well written fictionalized account of what happens when your man becomes your EX-man but he doesn't seem to understand that. Ladies you know what I mean.

Yaasa is a girl who seemingly has it all together, but when she gets involved with Chee things things quickly take an almost deadly turn. When Yaasa wants out of the relationship Chee decides that "aint tryna hear that" so he makes Yaasa's life miserable. Luckily Yaasa has good friends and refuse to allow the pyscho Chee to ruin their girl's life.

I finished "Possession" in one day, trying to see what this nut was going to do next. Possession is entertaining and well written. Da'Neen's imagination is unbelievable and her ability to put you right there in the room with the characters is uncanny. Even after I closed the book I was still thinking about that damn Chee. That means Da'Neen did her job well.

She may be new to this game but I have a feeling Miss Hale is here to stay!!!

Great job Da'Neen, i'm looking forward to your next book!
