Jade Rhinestone is not looking forward to her stepsister’s extravagant wedding. Her only consolation is that once the wedding was over, Bailey will be someone else’s problem.
The wedding itself promises to be incredibly dull. On the actual day, though, something incredible happens. An old woman disrupts the ceremony. Then she tells Jade that she’s her long lost grandmother and asks Jade to go away with her to an unspecified destination.
Now Jade has a choice to make.
As it turns out, there really isn’t much time for choosing, and off Jade goes to the magical town of Twinkleford, where witches mix with vampires and chameleons are as common as they are . . . anywhere.
But not everything is as it seems, and as Jade learns more about who she truly is, what that means, and who she has already lost, she realizes that keeping her newfound family might be far more difficult than she could possibly have imagined.

Blurb: Jade Rhinestone is not looking forward to her stepsister’s extravagant wedding. Her only consolation is that once the wedding was over, Bailey will be someone else’s problem.

Reminiscent of the Cinderella story, this was a good book to read as a break from a weightier work. The most interesting characters may be the ones who are physically absent but whose storylines are pivotal to the plotline. Minus one star for complete lack of proofreading. Really, authors, if you care enough to write a story, please go the extra half-step and get someone who can be knowledgeable and objective in proofreading!
Interesting premise, but does need some editing. A bit of a Cinderella theme with an evil stepmother and sister, although her father is still around, he isn't much of a buffer between Jade and the steps. When the bridezilla from hell's wedding day arrives, all Jade wishes is that it would be over with so she can at least get rid of one of her problems. Alas, she got more than she expected. The man of her dreams, literally, disrupts the ceremony along with a grandmother she never knew she had. Given the choice to stay at the wedding and face the sheriff (ahem, the dream hottie) or run away with her new grandmother, she takes option #2. And off she goes to a paranormal town where she learns she is a witch, that she has a sister who is wanted for murder, and that she is her family's last shot at retaining their home and status. A lot of pressure for a woman that never knew about any of it. With the help of a few friends, her cousin, and grandmother, Jade sets out to prove everyone wrong in the hopes of clearing her sister's name and saving her family's home.
Very entertaining with a few twists. An easy read to pass the time, but it definitely needs to be proofread. Hopefully the next book is better.
A good beginning to the series. The reader gets a chance to know Jade and some of the other characters before much drama occurs. Sometimes story just throw the character into danger and thrills right from the beginning and it is hard to get a feeling of the character. Disaster or life-threatening response person doesn't usually show other sides to the character.
There is a good foundation for world-building without too much information at once and still plenty of areas to discover. I would like to know some details such as why social hierarchy is so important to witches and why the Rhinestones are so looked down upon which seems to go back beyond just to Jade's mother and sister. You would think being in charge of the unicorns would be a powerful position because of the importance of unicorns but this doesn't seem to be true.
Some of the sentence structures were confusing and I had to read them several times to understand what was suppose to be conveyed but at times there were mistakes. Some more proofreading would help the flow of the story.
Still, I enjoyed the book and appreciated its mix of magic, politics, and intrigue. I look forward to more.
Jade is the young woman who is the main character. She has a mean step-mother and an even meaner step-sister. Her step-sister is going to get married and Jade is supposed to help out. (It's all sort of a Cinderella-type of thing.)
Things go wrong really quick. Strange things happen at the wedding and, to top that off, a guy seems to be coming after her and a strange woman says Jade has to go with her. She says she's her grandmother. On top of all that Jade has been having some strange dreams.
It gets stranger for her as she ends up in a town of paranormals and is told she's a witch. Her sister is supposed to be a murderer and her real mother was killed in an explosion in the city. Worse yet? Jade is supposed to compete in a who-wants-to-be-an-official with type of contest where, if she loses, her family there will be thrown out of their home.
Or, yes, her family is also disliked and lives in a pretty poor section of the town and the guy from the wedding turns out to be a sheriff who thinks she knows just where her sister is hiding.
One heck of a lot to take in and do that in a very short time.
She has to go from I-didn't-know-I-was-a witch to I have to pass tests in casting spells, using a cauldron and using a crystal ball, etc. all with only a few short weeks to prepare.
Then's there the talking cow, the smart-ass talking drunk goat, walking skeletons and a unicorn that tries to turn into into a shish kebab. Then you also have an uppity witch group, some bullying and another explosion.
Her father had married a woman who together with her daughter delighted in making her life as miserable as possible. However the daughter's wedding was even carrying that to the extreme. Therefore when the wedding is interrupted by a frantic old lady that tells her she is her Grandmother and tells to her to run, she does so. Especially as a hunk is in pursuit. Once safe she is told she is a witch and needs to prove herself to stop the coven throwing her Grandmother and cousin out off the family house. More, that she has a sister that's on the run after being accused of murder and that her mother had been jailed and killed in an explosion upon her release. Can she clear her sister, prove she is a witch and find out who killed her mother? A great plot, with nice twists which totally leave you surprised by the culprit. Great characters but it would be nice to know what her powers are.
Not the Run of the Mill Witch Coming of Age story.
This book was a very satisfying read. Yes, there's a mystery, witches and other parables but the main witch character isn't actually a witch. At least, not yet. These witch trials are not so much trials as exams. Jade finds herself being thrust from her evil stepsister's not so brilliant wedding shambles to go on the run to Twinkleford by her unknown grandmother. Problem is, Jade has never met her let alone finding out she has witch blood herself. And who is the 'Smouldering' Sheriff chasing them down? I'll be following this series, not too romantic or food focused but endearing as a fractured family unite to keep their coven position. Oh, and also a thriving trade in unicorn poop. Want the answers, read the book. In fact, read all of them. Addison, well down, you
Whoa! Since I been reading this type of book..... For three or four years. . Whoa! You have left all witch mystery traditions. I totally accept a pecking order .. Especially in times of dire straights but no witch is going to be trailer trash within her lifetime. For shame. Ingredients, potions etc.. Poverty in her time? No way. You cannot douse your reader with stupidity. The reader always knows what is going on so they can be properly terrified for the main character when they headinto some stupid danger.
Clearly part of a series, this book establishes the environment and introduces key characters. With very little exposition we are right into the murder and mysteries. I hope there is more to learn about the unicorns and cats. Surely there will be some backstory on the Rhinestone witches in future volumes.
This is a complicated world with currents and questions only hinted at in this book. Reading it left me with lots of questions and moderate interest in finding out more.
Awesome story, full of secrets, surprises, mystery, mayhem, drama, danger, lies, and betrayal! Her life is a lie, she learns the truth she had a sister, her mother was murdered, a magical world exists, and she is a witch! Wow! A whole new world awaits. She only has to solve a murder, rescue her sister, and save her family! No pressure, right! Only pass a test and save the day, fail, not an option!
I enjoyed the storyline but only gave 2 stars because this book needs a lot of work. It is like the author just wrote whatever came to her with no continuity. You go from something happening in one chapter to never being mentioned again. There were a lot of misspelled or missing words, etc. This author is in desperate need of a proofreader. I think with a proofreader and rewording, this could be a good book.
I am enjoying the book. The story is excellent with well developed characters. There's a surprise around every corner. My only complaint is the book needed to be proof read. There are words where there shouldn't be, sentences that make no sense. If you have a problem with grammar, don't get the book.
This was so far from what I expected but a great surprise. Who knew that one day you would be whisked away from your step-sister's wedding by your grandmother no less, the very same one you knew nothing about. Not only to be told you are a witch but the keepers of unicorns? Oh my! Lovely mystery with oh so many twists and turns.
The story had me hooked right away. However, the more I read the more confusing some of the sentences became. Especially towards the end. Either there was no proofreading at all or someone wasn't paying attention to auto-correct. That was very annoying!
It was quite a ride! Had all the elements I love and more! I want to read every book as soon as possible! Interactions with the animals and other paranormal were very engaging! Anyone who loves witchy cozies should love this! M
Jade goes from a normal suburban human life to a supernatural witches town. She must pass the witch test to keep her family in the town's witch coven. While fighting prejudice, as her sister is accused of murder. Good book !!
A well crafted novel, the story is complex enough for more novels. The story arc concludes with enough mystery to encourage you to buy the next volume. The characters are dimensioned and believable we are concerned about their travails. All in all a good read.
Ok. I have beenremiss. in learn I!mg the lives of witchery..this is a fun refer to intro one in witch heraldry, included is a mystery no-one ever could see being solved. So I am up for book2.
It was interesting but there was a little lag when Jade got lost. I did skip those pages. But it was a very good read and would recommend this series and the authors other series.
Really enjoyed this one. It's got great quirky characters, a plot with some nice twist to it and a resolution that is open ended allowing future book development. Very satisfying !
This cute story could have been better if there weren’t so many typos and outright errors. I’m not willing to invest anymore time with another book by this author.
