The Rebirth of an Ill Fated Consort easily serves as one of the more brutal, blood thirsty predecessor to the author's work Rebirth of Malicious Empress of Military Lineage. Leaning once again on the rebirth time travel fix with a plot filled with characters having black belly and heart and face slapping moments.

I found the romantic progression here more natural and the pair felt more well matched. Having revenge on the mind can subdue any amorous intentions the fl could have and here the book details on the emotional and mental repercussions of the lead going through it. Having read TRMEML, I have come to enjoy the 'big reveals'.

Unfortunately I want to nitpick on the last arc, while it was fitting to have the major events happening- I found it extremely tedious, repetitive to read. We could have compressed the chapters and skimmed the detailed description. I had grown weary and wanted to read the epilogue sooner. I was expecting most of the twists since I'm now a self proclaimed c drama and c novel reader veteran. But the pace could've picked it up. I was also dejected when I didn't find any side stories. It's like having a meal without a dessert.

To sum it up, I heartily enjoyed but will advise on the heavy topics it contains. Rewarding revenge plot with a slow romance against the backdrop of political strifes

It gives you the same feelings as the first one and leaves you wanting more.
While I did get bored in some parts it still is a very well written novel.

A good novel with lots of depth, action and worthy characters beyond the main couple.
Warning: This has several descriptive killings, child sexual assaults, dismemberment, torture and more! Not for the squeamish. It is hard to read those brutal scenes. The English translation gives alerts at the beginning of the chapters with the brutality. But, this acts like spoilers as well. So, I was a little prepared for the deviant scenes and they are a lot of them. It felt like the author was trying to add shock value. It was a bit excessive. Did not add value to the novel. Made the novel a bit repulsive.

This is a palace drama where the fight for the throne overrides all. The harem women fight for the emperor’s attention while royals and nobles fight for power and prestige. Again, the level of violence and debauchery exceeds the typical palace novel. There is some dialogue of cultivation, but, no in-depth cultivation practices were discussed. The author uses cultivation to explain the super strength and quick reflexes of some characters.

The storyline was mostly good for such a long novel (259 chapters). It got slow about two thirds of the way into it. Practically no definitive romance until near the end when some barely romantic scenes were sprinkled into the storyline. But, not enough for such a long novel.

Found the ending very weak and it seemed to drag on forever. I kept wishing characters would die quickly. Also, I’m not sure what the author was doing with the Main female character near the end. It got confusing and didn’t fit with the rest of the main plot.

Note: Many English translations have the definition of Mandarin words embedded in the chapters instead of at the end. This is extremely disruptive while reading because it breaks the concentration of the reader especially using reader software to speak the words. I found a raw Mandarin version. Then, I used Google Translate to convert the raw novel into English at about half way into the novel when I considered dropping it. That made an enormous difference! No definition breaks embedded into the chapters, no excessive advertising and no excessive translator notes in the body of the text chapters!

From the same author who wrote the story that The Double (2024 cdrama) is based off. She has a mini series of rebirth revenge novels and they're really entertaining - rebirth of the Di daughter (The Double), of a female general, of a malicious empress, and of an ill-fated consort.

A very enjoyable read although this was a bit too long at 254 chapters. There were a bunch of arcs that could've been omitted because they were unnecessary. With that being said, this author is truly skilled at writing complex and despicable villains whom you love to hate and whom you love to see suffer. The political machinations and malicious scheming were very engrossing and entertaining for this very reason - the underdog heroine is really sympathetic, the villain is so hate-able, and somehow it feels like the heroine always only wins by the skin of her teeth. This author is able to write intrigue and schemes such that there is a real sense of stakes and pressure from these villains even though we all know that the heroine will always win.

But IMO the author is a bit obsessed with youth and the two main leads' beauty LOL. Paragraph after paragraph is devoted to the heroine and love interest's youth and beauty, it gets a bit much sometimes lol.

I find this heroine quite interesting. She's a yandere. I thought the novel would have had more depth if there had been more focus on the heroine's struggle not to be overcome by vengeance (I love books that focus a lot on transformative character growth) but as it is, this is a 爽文 shuang wen - a revenge webnovel that just feels cathartic to read and that is hard to put down and is purely for entertainment. Which this novel has definitely achieved.

had i not known for a fact that the same person wrote both “the rebirth of an ill-fated consort” and “rebirth of a star general”, i would never have believed it. star general has amazing writing, perfect pace, feminist themes, good characterisation of both main and side characters, and a beautiful love story. ill-fated consort, on the other hand, has none of those things.

i guess i will start with the thing that has bothered me the most throughout the story, namely the treatment of female characters by the narrative. it bothered me a lot that the main character’s - jiang ruan’s - preferred way of seeking revenge against almost all female villains of the story was to subject them to sexual abuse. no matter how evil a woman is, scheming to get her g*ng r*ped by criminals is never an adequate punishment (nor is any form of sa). it is baffling to me that the novel attempted to execute some feminist themes with jiang ruan’s story (her succeeding & outsmarting males constantly and being underestimated by them being prime examples), but any such attempts are futile when one looks beyond jiang ruan herself. besides her, we have no well-written characters (which was absolutely not the case for star general, for instance). the few of them that did have the potential to be fleshed out were instead turned into dull cardboards with exactly 1 personality trait total.

another issue this novel has is its unnecessary length. it could have easily been 30 or even 40 chapters shorter and the story would not suffer. the amount of times either jiang ruan’s or xiao shao’s beauty was described is honestly ridiculous and got tiring really quickly. is there really a point in describing how gorgeous the main characters are after we have been reading about it for the last 200 chapters? on a related note, i would like to circle back to the feminist themes for a second; the way 10-12 yo jiang ruan was being constantly described as “seductive” is genuinely concerning. this is a middle school-aged child, no matter whether she is mentally a middle-aged woman or no. if the author took all of the words wasted on those two things mentioned above and used them to further develop the side characters, the overall story would have been that much better.

even the romance part, which should have been the highlight of the story, fell flat. i suppose i can understand why xiao shao started liking jiang ruan, but i am at a loss as to why she fell for him, especially when she has so much trauma from her past relationship with xuan li (which was. never properly addressed as pertains to romantic relationships). even bypassing that, xiao shao is supposed to be a “grumpy” man who turns out to have a heart of gold. now, xiao jue from star general’s character has the same personality, but in his case it was fleshed out perfectly. xiao shao, on the other hand, is as fleshed out as a brick, and i dreaded every time he comes on screen. he is so rude to everyone he comes across (except for jiang ruan, because of course) that it is genuinely baffling to me how people around him could put up with him. for example, there were literally multiple instances where his sect brothers would be talking to him and he would literally just keep quiet the entire time and not even attempt to say something to support the conversation. that is not “grumpy”, that is impolite. there is nothing about his character that makes him likeable. also, the scene when he and jiang ruan slept together for the first time was so disturbing that i would have dnf-ed it had i not been so close to finishing the story (she was still drugged no matter how much the narrative tried to suggest otherwise).

another thing that did not make any sense whatsoever was the ending, specifically the last chapter. why on earth would xuan li save her children for no reason??? what was this random attempt at a redemption arc? it had no place to be in the story and honestly ruined it for me even more than it was already ruined by everything i mentioned beforehand.

the 2 stars that i did give to this novel, though, are entirely for qian shan cha ke’s phenomenal political scheming, which is something she has always excelled at, no matter the story. here there were multiple plot twists that i did not see coming and which were entertaining and intriguing to read about, which is perhaps the only thing that made ill-fated consort bearable.

overall, even though i was not a fan of this work in the slightest, it made me appreciate qsck all the more. seeing her growth as an author from works like malicious empress and this one to the masterpieces such as star general and deng hua xiao is truly very inspiring. i am very glad she has learnt from her mistakes and continued to improve throughout the years, as well as try new genres.

p. s.: if you want actual good (revenge) novels set in ancient china with a phenomenal romance in the background and well written female characters, i recommend this author's latest three works: rebirth of a star general, zan xing, and deng hua xiao! you won't regret it, trust me.

An excellent rebirth/revenge story, though the author takes it too far with the punishments and gory details. The first chapter in particular, which details what our FL went through at the end of her previous life, was incredibly difficult to read. I had never heard of the term human swine or knew what it was until this story, and I wish I didn't know since it's super gross.

The premise is pretty standard for a rebirth story. The FL Jiang Ruan suffered a terrible fate in her previous life, ignored by her father, schemed against by the stepmother and half-sister who she trusted, and abandoned by the 8th prince who she loved and dedicated her life to helping. This time, she's reborn to 10 years younger when she's just a teenager (though her age is never specifically mentioned) and is determined to get revenge on everyone who wronged her, starting with her family but also other officials and the 8th prince as well.

Most of the first half (?) of the story focuses purely on Jiang Ruan and her schemes, as she slowly works her way up and gains more power and influence in the Jiang family. The ML, Xiao Shao, makes periodic appearances, but they don't interact much and it's more that he takes interest in her and starts observing her and helping her in unnoticeable ways. The romance only ramps up later after he openly helps her a couple times, and even then it's slow going given that Jiang Ruan is solely focused on revenge and isn't interested in starting up any romance given how she was betrayed by her beloved 8th prince in the past life. If you're looking for a happy story with lots of fluffy romance, this isn't the story for you.

Still, the romance developed in a natural way. While Jiang Ruan is initially mistrustful of Xiao Shao because he helps out her half-sister due to a misunderstanding, he eventually wins her trust and breaks down the walls around Jiang Ruan's heart. By the end, they're fully dedicated to each other and work together beautifully to take down their mutual enemies. They're both smart people, so it really was satisfying to read about them plot together and act like they're in conflict to trick their enemies.

I was never bored though, because Jiang Ruan's schemes are brilliant. She has a deep understanding of human nature in general, understands her enemies thoroughly, and is also armed with special knowledge from her previous life. That makes her an extremely formidable opponent, especially when her enemies constantly underestimate her because she's a beautiful young girl.

Initially the schemes are smaller and stay within the family, but eventually she becomes involved in the grander political stage and even gets targeted by foreign enemies. From scheming her way out of the countryside estate where she's bullied by the servants, to avoiding the many schemes from both immediate and extended family members, to taking down members of the 8th prince's faction and eventually the 8th prince himself, she foresees everything and does a brilliant job of sidestepping each attempt to target her. Some might argue that she's too smart and even OP, but I love a smart protagonist so I enjoyed following along with Jiang Ruan as she beat down her enemies one by one.

I will say though, some of the schemes that she or other people come up with are quite rough and can be hard to read. Here are some examples:

1) the FL personally castrated the older Li son, Li Yang, while he was unconscious, after he attempted to rape her

2) the two brothers and father of the Li family getting sold to a male brothel after the dad sexually abused Pei'er in the previous life, so now it's payback time

3) Jiang Susu unknowingly ate her unborn brother's placenta bought from a medicine shop as supplements after her face was scarred

4) this is the worst one for me - Jiang Susu getting kidnapped by bandits and being raped by all the men in the bandit hideout. Then she was killed by her own brother's hands because he wants to hide what happened to her so it doesn't affect his own career. I get that she was one of the worst villains and treated the FL terribly in both lives, but it is a really rough ending for her.


One thing I didn't like was that all the bad guys were really bad; not a single one of them was redeemable. There were folks that the FL allied with briefly when their interests aligned, but once that period ended, they each went their own way and later they still schemed against the FL I initially thought that perhaps the FL's youngest 4th sister, who has always hidden her sharp edges under a timid and shy personality, would be end up helping her, but their relationship quickly soured in the end. There were constantly people betraying the FL, which felt like a really negative situation to be in, so it would've been nice if she had more friends/allies by her side other than the ML and later on Pei'er.

Also, there was really no explanation of why Jiang Ruan's father was so biased against her and her brother. I get that they're the children of his first wife who he was forced to marry and wasn't fond of, but when it becomes clear that the future of the Jiang family lies with the FL and her brother and not in the hands of his favored children with the 2nd wife, the father still doesn't make any attempt to treat the FL and her brother well. This makes no sense to me. Even if he personally doesn't like them, he should have treated them better, but he never does. This goes back to what I said earlier about none of the bad guys being redeemable.

I would've appreciated a little more closure between the 8th prince and Jiang Ruan as well. Xuan Li regains his memories of their previous life at the end of the story, but when he finally confronts her about it, it's in front of a group of people including the ML so they can't say much. It would've been nice if they had a short private conversation instead where the FL tells him the truth of her cruel treatment and death and really makes the 8th prince understand where he went wrong for her to hate him so deeply.

The story is well written and the pacing goes quickly. I was hooked the whole way through as something was always happening; the FL never really gets a break as she's constantly being targeted My one minor complaint is that there was soooo much flowery language and descriptions of the characters, mostly the FL but also sometimes of her half-sister and the ML as well. It was a bit too much. This is just one of the many many examples:

She immediately caught the attention of all present. A tight-fitting jacket of crimson satin, patterned with flowers and embellished with gold and white butterflies, a skirt sprinkled with jade-green flowers, and a pair of petite red sheepskin boots shot through with gold thread and featuring a cloud pattern. Such an outfit, by itself, gave off an aura of wealth and honour. However, worn by this young lady, it was as if such wealth and honour were but her due. The white fox fur-edged sleeves of her crimson cape, patterned with cranes, gleamed with a faint silvery sheen. She was a lively, vibrant figure, and her radiance dazzled everyone.

As she walked closer to them, everyone could not help but hold their breath upon beholding her appearance. She was naturally fair, and her face, devoid of makeup, glowed with a lustre similar to that of a creamy white jade of the highest quality. In comparison, her lips were even redder, like the rosiest of dawns. The harmonious brilliance of her jet-black eyes was as charming as a spring day. Upon taking a closer look, though, those upturned eyes bore a hint of icy mockery. Her long eyebrows, drawn with luo zi dai, enhanced the delicate charm of her appearance, and readily drew the eyes of onlookers towards her.

All in all I really enjoyed this story as it was full of deep schemes carried out by our smart protagonists. Would recommend to anyone who likes stories in this genre.

Good Characterization through out the story. I loved the way good characters are built, around MC who are actually not related to her too. Especially, Qi Feng and Zuan Pei.
Rating was slightly less than Malicious empress due to 2 characters as they are not built strong or with loopholes.
Xuan Li's characterization could have been better.
Bai Zhi / Dong Jin character - Do not want to comment.

This book ... huh. I dunno if GR is just inaccurate re: publication dates (cuz I def would've thought the author wrote Empress AFTER Di Daughter) - but this book I can definitely see/felt was an earlier work.
This one though was definitely the most 😱 the punishments cruel - the one to her shu sister I can't even think about also kinda need to know if it was actually real or not but if it was real *shudders* and if NOT real/the author came up with it then 😱x a million.

I think this is the book where FL risks her own life the most - (I also forgot I wrote a "review" below)
There's SO MUCH here and I might re-read w/ a good translation. Would be worth it <3

That ending was so abrupt wtf! Anyways, this is probably my least favourite romantic pairing from this author. Generally, I love the way the author writes her enemies-allies-friends-lovers slow burn OTPs. But I struggled to feel something for this couple up until the end. I mainly blame the love interest for being a stoic ass boring vanilla block of wood with zero personality to speak of. The protagonist is, as per usual, phenomenal. It's not her fault I shipped her more with literally everyone else than the ml.

Plot wise, this was also the weakest compared to the other 3 books I've previously read. Really dissapointing considering how much this book is hyped alongside Malicious Empress. The sheer brutality and gore of this book trumps anything you've seen in Malicious Empress. But the characters and their motives are not as fully fleshed. There's also quite a number of glaring plotholes that really test the limits of suspending disbelief; some plot threads are brought up only to be abandoned/forgotten halfway through.

Like I said, I can usually jump past most things (as long as the characters are engaging enough), but it wasn't the case here. I feel a little let down since I was really looking forward to reading this but this is the first time I've been let down by this author. 3.75 stars.

This story is by far the most over-the-top revenge story I've read. The female lead takes true revenge, not any sort of soft revenge or redemption, she is ruthless. And I love it. And cringe. Wow. Poetic justice is served on a platter!
Most of the story is really good. The type of story where you can't stop reading and before you know it the time is 3am and you really need to get some sleep. So I really enjoyed this a lot, but...
Why is it this author seems to have an issue with the final arc of a series. The first 3/4 of the story are usually just great but there always seems to be a shift in the storytelling. There just has to be a separation between the ML and FL. Why? Why is there always a separation? And then a lot of story is just thrown against the wall to see if it sticks and most of it could be quite happily taken out of the novel and would only make things better.
So, like the other books that I have read from this author, remove most of the last arc, stop with the stupid separation of the couple, and things would have been perfect.
It was still enjoyable. I thing you could easily skip/skim over chapters 248-268.

In Rebirth of an Ill-Fated Consort / Rebirth: The Legitimate Turned Disastrous Imperial Concubine, Jiang Ruan was abused, misused, and died with a burning hate that could fuel a thousand suns. In her second life, she vows to get revenge on everyone that wronged her. Xiao Shao finds her fascinating and wants to help her out.

This is basically The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage, except she never leaves her kingdom and doesn't become an empress. Not to say that the book is repetitive, but the author loves a good and gruesome revenge.

I lied: the book is a bit repetitive, and the ending felt rushed for no reason. The author had a tendency to recount things from a few chapters back, and I ended up skimming quite a bit of things because of this. A lot is done to not tell you exactly how old the protagonist is, nor how wide the age gap is between the two leads.

Ultimately, I finished the book, and will be reading another from this author.

If you like Rebirth, Revenge, and someone loving you and supporting your crazy, this might be for you.

Now I have read 4 of this authors novels and enjoyed them all. All 4 novels have similar plot lines and the female lead and male lead are essentially the same each time. But I still find myself getting surprised at all the tricky situations and how they extricate themselves to finally bring justice. So they have never felt repetitive of predictable. My favorite is still probably Marriage of the Di Daughter. Rebirth of a Star General was the most different from the other 3, since it focused more on the career development of the female lead than the revenge plot. Rebirth of an Ill-Fated Consort was my least favorite of the 4. It is the most graphic and probably the only 1 of the 4 novels I wouldn't let my junior high girls just pick up and read on their own. That being said I still thoroughly enjoyed it. All of these novels are sooooo long and there tends to be a section near the end that just drags, but I have learned to just skim these sections for the relevant plot points.

feels like a first draft for RotMEoML. it’s good and it’s fun but if u have read RotMEoML you won’t be able to stop seeing the similarities. kinda feels like the author wrote this and published it and then never got over it (thank hashem) and just loved her own ideas sm that she then redid it and expanded on it until it became the novel we all know and love (malicious empress) 🤷‍♀️ but it was still an entertaining revenge story if that’s what ur into. about 2/3 of the way through it got kind of boring i didn’t care for the relationship drama everyone was going thru. but once they all got over that and it was back to the revenge i was into it again.

not a fantastic novel but definitely entertaining. her revenge was rly brutal sometimes and i loved it ngl

Oh my Jiang Ruan! She's literally the strongest fl I have seen in revenge plot. She never wavered, and she would use anyone to make her revenge easier! I don't agree much of how she executed some of her enemies but they deserve it, she is simply letting them taste of their own schemes against her. She literally devoured her everyone. I love how her top priorities are revenge and protect her older brother, and marriage is never on her mind. She's so twisted but you I agree you have to have strong heart to read this, the novel have lots of disturbing themes. I sobbed pretty much reading this and the villains were pretty well written and never failed to rage bait me lol. I hope this gets adapted into drama but it looks like it'll be hard or will take some time due to censorship as this novel is pretty dark, and the main characters, Jiang Ruan and Xiao Shao are hella savage.

I read another story by this author before and enjoyed it a lot. The author likes to write rebirth-revenge tales with dark histories and poignant romances.

Unfortunately, the translation for this one was a hit-and-miss. Despite plot holes and story inconsistencies, there were amazing, poetic, well crafted events and scenes. I'm disappointed by the uneven plot progression because I came to love the core characters. They were awesome to follow on the windy path of revenge and personal redemptions.

So, while it was flawed, it was still a fun series to read.

Qian Shan Cha Ke strikes again. This is probably the most gruesome of her novels that I have read, but the scheming, the politics, the revenge, she's truly an expert at writing these kinds of web novels. And that last arc, oh my god, I was on the edge of my chair, I was so scared whether Jiang Ruan would escape those last few traps, I sped through those last 50 chapters, I had to reach the end and find out if it would be a happy ending. I also really appreciated the romance between her and Xiao Shao, how they gradually fell in love, and how they always had such strong trust and partnership with each other. Truly the perfect blend of scheming and romance.

2) while people enjoy the no bs from the mc, i preferred how she was more soft towards the end bc honestly she was incredibly mean to some people for things they hadn’t done yet. if u can change ur fate, doesnt that mean they can change theirs?
3) way too vicious for my liking and too explicit in those descriptions
4) honestly if the author didn’t enjoy quite literally torturing characters this novel would be significantly shorter
5) overall though, the writing and plot were really good, the eighth prince did deserve more writing toward the end as the finish to his story seemed a bit rushed

What pains me so much is an unfinished translated novel.

The author of this book is the same one as The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress and you can actually tell from the plot. Although what I can tell is the first chapter of this is more gruesome and dark than the former that it made my heart hurt. Also, kinda glad to see that our ML is not omnipotent as XJX (although kinda close to it).
