Tales of Pixie Hollow #14

Rosetta's Daring Day

Rate this book
Rosetta and Fawn are complete opposites. Rosetta loves fancy dresses and flowers. Fawn would rather go on adventures with her animal friends. Then the queen throws a fancy dinner, and Fawn decides she doesn’t want to go. So Rosetta makes a deal with her. If Fawn dresses up for the dinner and minds her manners, Rosetta will spend a day doing whatever Fawn wants. Rosetta thinks it’s the perfect plan. But she never imagined just what Fawn would want to do! Can their friendship survive a day of frogs, mud, and . . . worms?

I love this series! Every time I pick one of these up for a reread, it's truly just delightful. And this one is a great one in the series, too.

Despite their deep differences, Rosetta and Fawn are friends. This cute little story challenges Rosetta to grow to be more selfless and to learn to appreciate the differences in other fairies. I love watching Rosetta and Fawn's relationship deepen as Rosetta learns to see that her way isn't always the only way and that it's okay for others to have strengths, hobbies, and preferences different from her own. It's a great little story to discuss what it means to truly be friends - and it opens a great door to discuss themes such as courage, sacrificial love, selfishness, and the unique personalities God gave each of us.

Fawn is as tomboy as they get and Rosetta is very girly. Rosetta is wholly concerned with luxury comforts and her appearance. Even her garden is immaculate and all about the beauty of the flowers. She has a low tolerance for anyone or anything that causes her any sort of imposition. She doesn't consider the desires or motivations of others and entirely believes that the things she loves and wants are right and anyone who disagrees is just wrong. Her shallowness even goes so far as to endanger others at one point as she refuses to help with a disaster because it would mess up her appearance.

Fawn, on the other hand, just loves having a good time. She doesn't mind getting dirty and she loves helping out. It was fun to see her step outside her comfort zone by attending a fancy dinner with Rosetta and to be rewarded for her bravery, but even as she planned out a day to spend with Rosetta, you could see how she specifically took Rosetta's concerns into account as she planned the day. Of course the activities still challenged Rosetta to get outside her own comfort zone, but even in her own personality, Fawn was a great friend to Rosetta. I think Fawn's example is part of what won Rosetta over in the end and I love that example of how who we hang out with matters because our friends influence us and challenge us to grow, even simply by the way they live their own lives.

There's a small part of me that wishes Rosetta had been held a little more accountable for her selfishness and that she'd more explicitly recognized that the "horrible" day she had was really a result of her own attitude. But all in all, it's a cute, short, and delightful little story of growth, friendship, courage, and selflessness.

I found Rosetta a bit too superficial to be likable as a heroine. She’s a flawed protagonist, which is always tricky to write. The message about how fears and bravery are subjective, as well as accepting a respecting your friends’ differences was a good one for young readers. The world of the series is, as always, charming.

There's a small fire, and the fairies work quickly to put it out before it could spread all the way to Pixie Hollow. Fawn plays a major role in this, while Rosetta, who was also there, doesn't do anything to help. She doesn't want to get dirty or have her clothes ruined.

Later, there's a special dinner party given by Queen Clarion to honor those who helped, and Rosetta is not given a medal.

Rosetta and Fawn had made an arrangement that results in Rosetta spending a day with Fawn, supposedly to have fun, yet things go very badly, from her viewpoint, with her getting wet, muddy, and damaging her clothes.

Sometimes individuals are given a second chance, and Rosetta is able to show she can be as brave as the next fairy. Another good book in the series.

Even though two people can be complete opposites, they can still be the best of friends. In this book a garden fairy (rosetta) and an animal fairy (fawn) are the best of friends. They both help each other feel special on different occasions. Rosetta was brave to save Fawn and Fawn was brave to wear a pretty dress and look all fancy. In the end, this was a great story. I would highly recommend it for children.

These illustrations were on point. Rosetta looks gorgeous in her long auburn hair and so did Fawn, dressed up!

It reminded me of Tinker Bell and the Never Beast Disney Fairies movie where they really changed Fawn -- hair, personality -- it really bordered on whitewashing, kind of.

I'm glad Fawn stayed true to form here, a bit tomboyish, rough but loyal and helpful. I like Rosetta's growth here too, though the title was somewhat misleading.

really liked this one’s message about everyone having different fears they face. what might not seem a big deal to you could be a huge deal for someone else. i feel like a lot of people have a hard time understanding this. i also loved the art style and i’m excited to read more of these.

Scathing social commentary on the struggles of internalized misogyny, peer comparison, and grind culture 🤩

This was a very good inside view on Rosetta, she really had to look inside her self to help Fawn out of that hole. She never really saw how selfish she was when she never helped with the fire, but she realized that she could not just leave Fawn in that hole without helping her. It was a good and simple tale. Very enjoyable.

A soothing and kindhearted story about friendship, accompanied by truly beautiful illustrations. As a kid I would have loved this series of books offering little glimpses into the daily lives of fairies. I appreciate how the fairies of Pixie Hollow are not confined by old, boring gender roles and expectations.

3.5 ⭐ stars.

I fear I am Rosetta as much as I wish I am Vidia.
I can't wait to have my daughter read these books.

“The question is not what other fairies would be afraid of,” the queen said reasonably. “The question is what you were afraid of, and how brave you managed to be for your friend.”

Such a sweet, short read. I wish I knew about these books when I was a kid because I DREAMED of living in Pixie Hollow. This is my first of many Disney fairy reads! Rosetta is so relatable to me 🧚🏼‍♀️

Definitely not my favorite of the series. Rosetta complained the entire time. She ends up learning a lesson in the end, but meh. There are better books in the series making deeper connections with a better storyline. Still a cute read though.
