First Love Or First Bite? Although Sophie Hahn works as a paranormal researcher, she doesn't believe in ghosts, werewolves, or anything to do with the supernatural world. But when Sophie's boss is convinced that her best friend Dao is slowly being killed by a female vampire, her beliefs are put to the test. Sure Dao bears more than a passing resemblance to a walking skeleton, but his new wife doesn't look capable of hurting a fly let alone sucking the life out of someone. On the other hand, watching Dao whither away to nothing isn't an option. So if Sophie has to go vampire hunting, she'll do it. . .
That's when Sophie meets sexy college professor and vampire Ric Vogel, who asks her to be a partner on his search for two ancient relics that have the power to end his people's suffering forever and save Dao. Sophie finds herself falling hard for Ric. What is she thinking by lusting after a vampire? Maybe he isn't a vampire. After all, she doesn't believe they exist. All she knows is that Ric's dark, seductive looks are very real and his love bites feel too good to resist. But is Sophie prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for the vamp of her dreams?
Nothing exciting happens in Tawny Taylor's life, unless you count giving the cat a flea dip--a cat can make some fascinating sounds when immersed chin-deep in insecticide--or chasing after a houseful of upchucking kids during flu season. She doesn't travel the world or employ a staff of personal servants. She's not even built like a runway model. She's just your run-of-the-mill, pleasantly plump Detroit suburban mom and wife.
Awful. Just painfully awful. I thought it would be a light fun read and for the first few chapters it was. Then it became so stupid I had to quit reading, for fear of losing too many brain cells.
I originally picked this book up because the cover was super cute and the back sounded semi-interesting. The old saying don't judge a book by its cover is very apropos in this instance. It was not good like at all. The only reason it got a 1 was that some of the ideas had potential but the execution was awful. Also, Sophie and Ric had moments where they could have been great characters but some of the choices the author made with them, and the plot make no sense. For example, There was a non-consensual bite scene between Sophie and another vampire that was so rape-y and gross. It felt discordant and was such a weird choice considering the light and breezy tone for the rest of the book. Overall, it was just bad, and I should have dnf it.
When the heroines best friend starts to behave strangely, she begins to worry that something is up. His new wife is bizarre and off-putting but a snake vampire??? She doesn't believe it. Her job as a secretary to a paranormal researcher is nothing but a pay cheque and she doesn't put a whole lotta faith in the woo-woo. Until that is the night she spends over at her friend’s house. She experiences a horrible visitation where a vampire ties her down and proceeds to make a meal out of her. Come morning, she still has the marks to prove that is was no dream and that she has a serious problem on her hands. Fearing for not only herself but her friends’ lives, she turns to the library for a means in which to deal with the undead. There, she meets the sex on 2 legs that is the hero. He is charming and drop deal gorgeous and for some reason, he's obviously attracted to her. He keeps giving her come hither eyes and she can't help herself from falling for them. Turns out, he's looking for the same information she was and they decide to team up. One a trip out to interview a potential source, the hero reveals to her that he himself is 300-year-old vampire. Only he's a different breed than her friend’s wife or her midnight attacker. His kind look to end their immortally and with the sword and shield mentioned in the bible, he searches for a way to save his people. He is immediately stuck dumb by his love at first sight with the heroine. Small, charmingly chatty and far too tempting for her own good, he falls for her instantly. But he can't tell her everything and therefore, his secrets cause the heroine to doubt him on many occasions, especially when her midnight attacker puts ideas in her head that he is lying to her.... Which he is but only by omission. Together, lost in sea of chemistry and the search for that true bonding between a vampire and his mate, they search for the answers as to how to kill the vampire snake woman killing her friend and how to save the heroes people.
While this book undeniably had charm and humor, there were just too many things wrong with it to make in enjoyable. First off, the whole story was full of holes where I kept having to search my mind to see if I missed a page somewhere or if the author was just forgetful. The heroine’s sister? What the hell happened there we'll never known but it obviously affected the heroine greatly. The midnight attacker suddenly becoming a good guy? The vampire basically raped the heroine in the first encounter and yet just because he's looking for her to mate with him, he's an almost potential love interest? WTF? The hero’s backstory and clan history? No real idea WHY the hero feels the need to risk eternal damnation for the sake of a sword and dagger but it's obviously enough for him to be at odds with his own brother and to basically lie and cheat for the entire book. At one point, before the authors storytelling took a turn for the worst, I actually thought these characters were quite funny. The heroine was charming and the overall writing style was smooth. The hero was flirtatious and the sex scenes were hot to be sure. But I just couldn't justify the mistakes and at the end of the day, I believe it's safe to say that this was poorly written book.
Overall, this book was much better than the last one I read by this author, but it still lacked maturity in character dialogue. The female lead, Sophie, is supposedly 26 years old but her thoughts and actions and dialogue rings much much younger than that. I also found it a tad confusing to follow the storyline sometimes because the author would jump from POV within the same page/paragraph sometimes. I am more used to POV being the same per chapter or at least per section within a chapter. There were lots of things that didn't add up at the end and the ending itself was pretty anti-climatic when it should have been amazing due to the build up. Also, after a whole novel of searching for something the finding it was WAY too easy for my liking...just felt like the author wanted to wrap up the book too quickly. The sex scenes were decent and there were a good amount of them, but even those were confusing at times due to the POV changes.
I didn't get to finish this for a different reason this time other than not liking it. I was on about page 124 or so and liking it okay. Not going to win any prizes, but an okay read. Had gotten my interest. We were in a rush to get some where last night and I accidentally left this book out on the ottoman. Within reach of Abby, the book eating Bagle (Basset/Beagle mix). She did a thorough job of destroying this book to the point I would not be able finish it. Ripped pages out that I had not gotten to yet and literally ate them.
This was on sale. I paid 65 cents for it and feel that I wasted my money. The main character was immature and whiny. Good guys turned bad, bad guys became good, and all far too quickly. I could see no reason for it. I assume this will become a series. I won't waste another 65 cents on it! Vampire soft porn, if you are interested in that aspect of it.
DNF'd at 210 pages This was an awful book. It's been a long time since I hated something enough to put it down but I hated this one. I hated Sophie, I hated Ric, the sex scenes were cheesy and awful (and this is coming from someone who likes Harlequin romance novels) and I just didn't care if they didn't save Dao.
The tragedy of this book is that some perfectly excellent ideas were swamped by great billowing waves of PWP. I'd read a sequel for the former, but be put off by the latter.
Well that was a fast read. Greatly entertaining though. It was like Twilight but with real sex! Taylor doesn't hold back one bit, but I don't think fisting means what she thinks it means. Anyway, very enjoyable and erotic, and an interesting take on the whole vampire genre.
This author is from the Detroit area and refers to a lot of local things. It is odd to read of a character heading to Meijer to pick up a few things. LOL
The title caught my eye. I like vamp books and my blood type is O-. I have a feeling I will regret having read this one, though, so it's on the bottom of the "to-read" list.
I do agree with gene showalter i just couldn't put it down i had to read it in one setting. Although it was not possible but it was a quick read and i enjoyed it none the same.
