This was bizzare reading experience. Half of this didn´t make any sense, what kind of high school has russian drug lords. Author should have stuck to making it a simple high school love story instead of trying (and failing) to mix genere...

Frustrating Heroine on Misguided Journey of Self-Delusion

*This review contains mild SPOILERS*

So to begin, I had great hopes for this book- I love retellings of Beauty & the Beast, and was looking forward to this very different version of the story.

I found this book very frustrating to read, and almost gave up on the book several times because Bella is characterized SO differently from what you would expect from Belle.

To me, Belle has a few qualities that define her character in every retelling. She is intelligent, passionate, loyal to her family and/or friends, a little bit stubborn, and is considered a bit of a misfit as a general rule. She is mostly secure in herself, and doesn’t seek the approval of the masses- she knows herself and what she wants and won’t accept mistreatment from those around her.

While I can understand that this is a YA retelling, and thus the universal experience of trying to find out who you are and where you fit in is a central theme of the genre, I think Bella strayed too far from the key characteristics that Belle is meant to embody.

Bella begins with most of the qualities a reader would expect- Bella is a misfit who has surrounded herself with a few very good friends. She is one of the best students in her class, but is failing French (though, let’s be real here, a 3.8 or 3.9 GPA will no longer grant you Valedictorian or Salutatorian- my graduating class in 2005 had 3 Co-Valedictorians with GPAs of 4.45 because of the extra weight given to AP classes, and a top New York private school WILL be offering, if not requiring, APs). She loves her father and her friends, and goes out of her way to read new things.

But Bella has a long-time crush on Luke, our resident Gaston character, and here we begin to depart from everything you think you know. If Bella were a true Belle, she would see right through Luke from the beginning and want absolutely nothing to do with him, but Bella is taken with his good looks and popularity; though to be fair, she begins to see through him once she has just one conversation with him, she allows herself to be manipulated into his scheme.

And now we begin the snowball of character deterioration. She is a good student who cares about school, but ditches class to go shopping. This girl told us that she hates pink, and yet she gets railroaded by Luke into buying an expensive new wardrobe that seems to be at least half that detested color. She loves her friends, but continues to lie to them and makes little effort to try to include them in her newfound popularity (though presumably, this is BECAUSE she is lying to them, and the less she sees and speaks to them, the less she has to lie).

I found it endlessly frustrating that despite the many times Bella tells herself that she should stop lying and tell the truth, she does nothing but continue to lie. Bella somehow plummets to become a character that is uncertain, vain, grasping for popularity, lying to everyone around her- especially the people she loves and values most, making super unwise and unhealthy decisions, and allowing herself to be a pawn in a game that she is not at all equipped to play. (Not only that, but this is a supposedly intelligent girl, who presumably has a smart phone with a maps application- the fact that she can’t figure out the location of this shady warehouse is just ridiculous.)

The only times I could tolerate Bella were her scenes with Cole- and thank goodness for Cole: his character saves this book single-handedly. Without him, I would have given up on this book 30% in. By about 50% in, I was seriously wondering whether the author intended Bella to actually be the Beast character. The fact that I managed to suffer through this book till the end is a testament to how much I needed to vent about it (I didn’t want to be unfair to Bella if she redeemed herself). But Bella doesn’t truly redeem herself- she is bailed out from her mistakes again and again by others, and while she does begin to understand and go back to being her true self, at the end of the novel all I can say is that Cole is unfailingly loyal and loves her way more than she deserves given how badly she treated him.

I will not be reading any more books in this series, as I cannot even begin to imagine the horrors of how the author will ruin Ariel and Jasmine.

The Boyfriend Agreement
Seven Steps

Ever wonder the things that teenagers will go through to get to the popular status? Here's your answer. This book is chock full of drama, romance, suspense, lies and more. Welcome to the world that is Bella French's.

Bella French average invisible teenager going through life of a nobody at school. Yes she has friends, popular no she is not. The mean girls of the school make time to let her that all the time. She may be a nerd on most things and likes to thrift shop, but what she really wants is to be Jake Winsted's girlfriend. She would give her right arm up for just a chance to talk to him, or even have him look at her. And really see her for once. And when he finally does. Bella French has to come to a decision. Will she do what it takes to be popular? Even if that means lying to her father and friends. And more importantly herself. Or will she go back to being her invisible normal self.

I liked the story. I liked the characters. Cole was a favorite of mine from the beginning. I enjoyed the that the plot was more than just a 'popularity' versus 'non-popularity' theme. Bella did get on my nerves a few times and I had to remind myself that she is a teen girl who lost her mother at a hard age. She did finally change her ways and I was so glad. I liked her 2 best friends and think they keep her a little grounded. Their names remind me of Disney princesses; Bella, Ariel, and Jasmine. I did find a few spelling errors but it didn't take away from the story for me. I look forward to the next story about Ariel and Eric.

I really like reading about HS romances because they are usually quick reads. That said this book is no exception. What I really liked about this book is that it is not your typical story where the popular guy falls for the lonely girl and they are together forever. It was nice to read a HS story with a twist. It is a definite recommend

Interesting retelling of beauty and the beast. The only thing I didn’t really care for was the fact that Cole’s brother was more beastly than he was, kind of makes it beauty and the beasts brother.

'The Boyfriend Agreement' by Seven Steps is definitely a hard one to put down! With a mix of romance, intrigue, and even some violent streaks mixed in, this novel is chock full of page-turning goodness. The author also uses plenty of Disney parallels that keep readers thinking and lends a light feeling to the book even when the themes seem darker than necessary.

Main character Bella French doesn't know it, but she is in love. The problem is that she's falling for the wrong brother. Jake Winsted seems like the ultimate guy. The hot and popular football player, being newly single, is all Bella thinks about, and she knows it's only in her wildest dreams that she'll ever land a chance with him. When that chance comes, though, it's at a much higher cost than she ever thought possible, and she begins to realize that what one sees on the surface is definitely not all there is to someone. Despite all of Jake's popularity and charm, she keeps finding herself drawn to his nuisance of a brother, Cole, who drives her crazy with his jokes about his slightly higher GPA.

Along with her two best friends, Bella tries to traverse what she finds out to be a pretty treacherous world of popularity, trying to maintain who she is while yearning to be someone she's never been and doesn't know that she truly wants to be. Mean girls aren't her only worry, either, when she finds out about a drug scheme going on in her own school and discovers that Jake might be involved, bringing her deeper into the world to which she once desperately longed to belong. All the while, she is realizing what she truly cares about, and figuring out how to maintain it all while trying to balance her lies and deceit, mostly directed at the people she cares about for what she maintains is their sake.

Anyone looking to be fully submerged in a novel, and feel the rush of being involved with something exciting that eventually turns out to be nothing it was cracked up to be, and even scary, must check out 'The Boyfriend Agreement' by Seven Steps. It will shake readers to their core, yet bring the brightest spots of romance that will spread smiles across the faces of those who read it. This is only the first of this series by Seven Steps, so checking out the rest is also a must!

This was an interesting retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I liked some of the characters but Bella kinda annoyed me sometimes with her actions. I stayed up late and read this book in about a day. It was a fast read and at some points I couldn't put it down then other times I was getting frustrated that I probably should have walked away from it. Bella annoyed me sometimes when she thought she was doing right by her friends and her father but should have talked to them from the beginning. She seemed to be a nice innocent girl in the beginning but had some violent tendencies that were a little extreme sometimes. Also this book definitely didn't go the way I thought it would. I didn't realize Jake would be so threatening or be dealing with a Russia drug lord. I liked Cole from the beginning and wish things had went a little differently but I am glad this story ends on a couple good notes. Hopefully the second book goes well for Ariel and Eric.

So, when I was young over 20 years ago we didn’t have Netflix nor where there are already DVDs. We had a big video recorder, and some of those big black videotapes which were quite expensive. Which meant that we just had a few of the Disney movies, beauty and the beast was not one of them. The only time I actually saw the movie was when it was on TV, which didn’t happen a lot. So my memories of the actual story are a bit vague, I think that was why I really liked reading this book. I always love classics inspire authors to create new stories.
In this book Bella French is the main character, her two sidekicks are also named after famous Disney characters which is a nice touch, Ariel and Yasmin. Bella is completely in love with the most popular boy of the school, he on the other hand doesn’t even know she exists. His twin brother stole my heart from the very first moment, and I was really rooting for him. For me as the reader, it was so obvious she should take him instead of someone who doesn’t even acknowledge her existence! Bella is really a typical teenager with all the insecurities that we live true in our youth. It was great to see and read how the story develops, so if you like retellings or inspired by stories check this out!

“The Boyfriend Agreement” the first book in the St. Mary’s Academy series mixes romance and humor with a dash of crime, and begins when Bella French an invisible, nerdy student who fantasizes about being popular and dating the hottest boy in school gets her wish when she makes a deal with Jake Winsted. In return for being his girlfriend for two weeks to make his ex-girlfriend Dana Rich jealous Bella will not only become popular and have a voice in the school but Jake agrees to her kissing restrictions and to secretly set up her best friend Ariel with his buddy Eric Shipman. As the plot heats up Bella not only finds herself caught up in a web of lies and hating the boy of her dreams, but swept up in a drug investigation at the private elite school they attend.

Emotionally-charged the suspense mounts as Bella begins to see through Jake’s charming, suave mask, discovering his connection to a drug ring infiltrating the school. But she can do nothing, her hands tied as dumping him would mean destroying her friend’s happiness. In a fluid writing style as the story progresses smoothly and quickly the tension escalates as Bella uncertain about her future, accepts that her happiness is no longer possible after slowly losing the trust of her father and her friends as well as perhaps the love of Cole Winsted. With this realization she begins to mature, gaining not only an understanding of herself, but the curse of popularity. With the addiction of a popular student and another dead, the plot takes a surprising turn with not only the revelation of Regina’s part in Bella’s torment at school but also with background information about the Winsted family as well as an unexpected confrontation near the end.

Funny and delightfully romantic amid the chaos in her life Bella having been assigned her arch-nemesis Cole Winsted as her French tutor and partner in an English project begins to discover that all his teasing and witticisms hold a deeper meaning. With every clash of wills sparks fly as their attraction escalates only to have Bella caught between exposing the truth of her relationship with his brother and bringing a friend unhappiness or pushing him away. Even the arrangement centered around Ariel and Eric takes a turn when his affection for her becomes genuine and not faked.

In a plot that’s enthralling, the characters are complex, realistic and captivating especially Bella French a girl who’s haunted by the death of her mother and attending a posh academy paid for by her grandparents. Feeling invisible she yearns to be popular, to be more than just another face in the unpopular crowd especially when counselling popular teens like Mel. She’s an excellent student, a quiet thinker, insecure and quick tempered when provoked as well as naïve and impulsive. Jake Winsted is a manipulative, self-absorbed, overly confident, condescending and arrogant jerk while his witty, geeky and super smart brother Cole appears to be moody, cocky and self-important but is kind, generous and witty; a music lover like Bella. I loved Mojo, the finicky and funny stray adopted by Bella who ignores her but obeys her father and even Cole, and has to be carried whenever she takes him for a walk.

I liked “The Boyfriend Agreement” even though it could use a good editing for spelling and grammatical mistakes. But the plot is enjoyable and holds your interest right to the cliff hanger at the end that begs for a sequel.

Amazing young adult book. I really liked Bella. She was funny occasionally as well as really smart. It was a shame to see her being invisible through high school and of course she would do anything to become popular. Cole is a really great character and i really liked his brooding nature from the start. It was amazingly written and one i couldn't get enough of.

Review

The book was quite qood in some areas - namely character development for Bella and a cute romance. BUT I struggled with the authors depiction of popularity, the insistence of the main character to stay with Jake for completely misguided reasons (I can definitely understand the proud, self centered teenager who thinks they can be independently, but it many cases the authors reasoning was unsatisfactory), and the unsatisfactory ending in regards to the non-romantic plot.

This is the first book I have ever read by seven steps, and after reading more into the book, a bright light finally clicked on that the characters are inspired by Disney. I actually saw this recommendation on Booksprout, so I was not aware that these series are Disney inspired, so after I was done laughing at myself, I actually enjoyed reading her inspirations/characteristics of Disney.
So I'm moving on now... The main character is Bella who attends a prestigious high school, and is invisible to everyone expect her two best friend Ariel & jasmine, and Cole who she considers her arch nemesis as he is first in their class and likes to constantly reminder her about it. Cole is actually a triplet and has grabbed the attention of the wrong brother. Bella has been crushing on Cole's brother jake since freshman year the only problem is Jake does not know she exists. Bella is tried of being invisible, she wants to be popular and stop grabbing they attention of the wrong brother. An opportunity arises for Bella to have what she has been longing when jake offers her an agreement that she can't refuse. But Bella learns popularity is not what she though it would be, and maybe being invisible was not so bad after all.

I voluntarily review an ARC.
I had high hopes for this book and actually liked most parts of the story. All characters of this YA romance are reliable. But sadly not the heroine. She is very intelligent, but keeps doing stupid things. She's a very honest person and keeps lying. At times Bella is very unsure of herself, than she stands up against others.
This is not a Belle of a retelling, the story is too far from the original.
I didn't like the continued grammatical errors, this book is in need of an editor.
But I did like the writing style and the storyline and the interesting turns.
I'm interested in the next parts of the series.

-'The girl who wanted so badly for everyone else to accept her that she forgot about her own happiness.'-
-'I knew who I was now. I was a strong, loving woman who no longer cared if other people accepted me. I accepted myself. I was a girl who would fight for herself and the ones I loved, even if it cost me everything. I was a girl who loved a boy and who hoped that, one day, he would forgive me enough to love me back. I was my mother’s daughter. If she saw me now, I knew that she would be proud that I had finally discovered myself.'-

I find it hard to rate this book. At times it was a 4/5, other times 2/5. It was up and down for me. It was too dramatic. The heroine made stupid choices and stupid decisions. She was weak. The popular girl ended up being the strong one but the storyline sort of just swept it along. A girl died and not much was said. It was a little odd to me. I think I'm going to settle with an overall rating of 3. It was pretty good but I don't see myself seeking more from the author. There were also way too many grammatical errors that should have been edited. It was worth reading for free on KU.

I remember liking this one enough to want to read more in the series. It was good but it moved too slow. And I found her too stubborn for my tastes. She wanted the popularity too much and was willing to go almost irredeemable to keep it. She just didn’t evolve enough for me to really want her to succeed.

And while I felt Cole was too mean, I wanted him to succeed more than Bella. But the way he was written, pretending to dislike her but really looking out for her was not done well and I found it highly unbelievable.

Heck, I didn’t even know this was a re-telling until I read other reviews. I’ll be the first one to admit I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I love re-tellings and the dots just didn’t connect for me.

I loved this book! I loved that characters from other books are hinted at and the princess names and hints of their lives are in the pages. Such a great story and plot. Popularity and high school are so overrated and especially at an ivy league private school. Who knew that a boyfriend agreement would take so many life changing turns for many involved including the main character Bella. A simple thing had so many rules and disastrous complications. I loved Cole. He was my face character. Bella's charter had me live her and despise her at different points in the story, even though her heart was in the right place most of the time. They all had to learn through each of their actions. Such a great book! I can't wait to see what happens next with the characters.

While there are parts that make you laugh, there are also parts that are tear worthy as well. The story moved along and kept me engaged (I would sit down to read for a few minutes, look up and it was an hour later!). As an adult, I enjoyed it, but I really wouldn't recommend it for a younger teen. There are some pretty heavy topics covered, which fit in perfectly well with the story, but a less mature teen would probably not enjoy it. I liked the little nod to Disney the author had (Ariel being on the swim team especially!). And while Bella got her story all told, there are some questions that need answering, which hopefully will come around in the promised second of the series.

DISCLAIMER: I received a free e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own! :D

This was a seriously wild ride of a book. It started off as a sort of rom-com with a bit of angst thrown in, but quickly veered into much more serious territory. I couldn't stop reading once it really got going!

The main character did annoy me sometimes with certain decisions she made, even though her heart was truly in the right place. The book also ended on a bit more of a cliffhanger than I'd like, and it opens the door for a sequel!

Would recommend! I can't wait to read the next one! :D

Bella French will do almost anything to be Jake Winsted's Girl and to be popular. Now she's been given that opportunity and also the chance to help out one of her Bestie's Ariel. It didn't work out as planned but now she's stuck, lest she hurt Ariel. Will she become invisible all over again?
I was given an ARC to read that was NOT PROOFED a final time yet. I was not compensated or persuaded to give a review, let alone a positive one.
