Trevor and Micah set out on what they think will be a fun day rock climbing and hiking. But after Micah takes a bad fall, injuring himself in the process, the trip is off to a bad start. Things take another turn for the worse when Trevor gets bitten by a snake. The friends know they need to act fast...before their adventure turns deadly.
I read the book On Edge by Raelyn Drake. The lexile level is 860L. This book is about 2 boys named Trevor and Micha. One day they decided to skip school to go rock climbing and geocaching. Their day got off to a bad start when Micah fell and was injured. They encountered many obstacles throughout the day including a snake bite and losing their way back home. They were unable to get back on track. They finally got the attention of two other hikers who sought help and the helicopter came to rescue them.
The theme of the book is to keep trying and don’t give up even when you encounter many roadblocks along the way. Even though Micah had injuries from his fall and Trevor was feeling the bad effects from a snake bite, they encouraged each other to keep trying to find their way out. They tried to help each other as best as they could and they were finally able to get the attention of other hikers by whistling. An example was when Trevor was getting more and more sick from the snake bite, Micah got him some water and some granola to keep him from collapsing.
I would recommend this book as it is a good example of the importance of staying committed to your goal, even when you encounter many difficulties. I enjoyed the book and it was easy to follow the plot. I liked the ending because they were rescued and able to get help for their injuries. I don’t recommend skipping school but if you have never tried geocaching, it is a lot of fun.
Trevor wasn’t prepared for his Chemistry quiz so he convinces his friend Micah to skip school and go rock climbing with him instead. If they had known the dangers they would face, they would have gladly preferred failing a quiz.
After finding 4 out of 5 geocaches on their hike, the two friends decide to head back a different way that could be shorter but has a steeper climb. Unfortunately, Micah gets seriously injured when a bolt separates from the rock he’s climbing but perseveres through his pain as they know no one is around to help them.
Then when Trevor gets bitten by a rattlesnake, the pressure is on to try to scramble, limp, or crawl out of their canyon before the snake’s poison incapacitates Trevor for good. Can the two find a way out or someone to help them before it’s too late?
This book is written for reluctant readers and they will love all the action with minimal details that won’t slow them down.
Trevor and Micah skip school to miss a chemistry quiz and go geocaching and rock climbing instead. However, a disastrous fall and a snake bite turn their day of fun into a potentially fatal one instead. Will they be able to get out of the canyon or get help before things turn fatal for one or both or the friends? A hi-lo action/adventure book with a fast pace and easy to relate to story line. Even though the characters are 18, students who are younger will still be able to make a connection. Based on reading this one, I would get the other books in the series. 3.5 stars
I read this book because my son recommended it to me. He's not much of a reader, so he picked the shortest book he could find to read for school. It was a fast-paced easy read. It was well written and exciting. It brought me right to where the two main characters were.
