Penelope lives with her mother – her father died years ago. She has always been different from other children: for example, her hair has been grey since she was born. But one day, Penelope wakes up with sparkling red hair and her mother confesses the truth: her father is not only still alive, he’s a wizard. Penelope has inherited his powers, and embarks on a journey to find him …
I think there might be something lost in translation when it comes to this book. The story itself is slow going, and the action doesn't resolve itself in a very satisfying way. I loved the little details and the exploration of magic, though, and the plot itself was interesting and fun to follow. The characters are all great and well-fleshed out, I specifically loved the road. So really there's a lot for a great book here, but I think part of the plot was lost in translation.
I wanted to read this as soon as I heard of it - it has magic and is a book in translation which I am always hoping to see more of in the U.K. The story follows Penelope, a young girl with grey hair and a strange smell of smoke that follows her everywhere she goes. She lives with her mother and grandmother in a red and green 'dragon' house and all she knows about her father is that he died many years before. Her life is turned upside-down when she overhears a conversation between her mother and grandmother about a letter from her father, then her hair mysteriously turns bright red. It turns out that Penelope's father was no ordinary person and she seems to have inherited his ability to do magic. Yet, it's frustrating trying to learn magic on her own so Penelope sets out to find where these mysterious letters come from and get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding her father... This was a fun, light middle-grade read which would be a good recommendation for those readers who have enjoyed The Worst Witch or similar stories. I liked some of the quirky additions such as the talking road and the spiders with grand names. The translation read very smoothly and my only real wish was for more information about the system of magic and how it worked. 3.5 stars.
Minu üheksa-aastasele minale oleks see raamat meeldinud. Kindla peale. Natuke nõidumist, natuke leekivpunaseid juukseid, natuke lendamist ja natuke hinge kinni hoidmist. Kõike just täpselt ühe pikema õhtuse lugemise jagu.
This was a bit of a frustrating read for me. Fell in love with the cover, was intrigued by the synopsis... yet slightly unpleasantly surprised about the actual content. I ended up also enjoying this book, (there's a lot of quirky magic, the protagonist is very likeable) but it's just not put together well enough to be one of those children's books one can not outgrow. Adult characters were often not very believable, the pacing of the overall story wasn't quite right. But there were still enough elements to barely earn a third star for me. Might recommend it to 9 year-old girls, not so much to adults.
I’m rating this book 4 stars ⭐️ because at first the book was very slow going. And at the end the book just felt unfinished. I mean, I know Penelope got her father back but what about the bad guys? What I also didn’t understand was the cat Coco. 🐈⬛🐈🐱 What even is a battery cat? Plus what I don’t understand is how Penelope’s father can transport his powers into Coco. Anyways, I kinda liked this book 📖 but hopefully I don’t make another bad book review!

The main character in this book is named Penelope Gardener. Her father had died when she was little. She was a very strange. Her hair was grey, even though she was only 10. And she always smelled fire, wherever she went. She was very interesting. She could hear what someone said before their lips were even moving, sometimes hours or minutes before. She was used to her hair being grey, even though she was 10. Suddenly, one night the fire smell disappears. Suddenly, one day in the morning, her hair isn't grey any more. It's red as fire. Only her grammy was at home, because her mom was at the hospital. A tractor had run over her. Grammy was not happy with the hair. She tried to cut it off. Away Penelope ran. Eventually her mother tells her that her father isn't actually dead, he just left them and ran off to Blacksot. He sends them money every month, but this time he only sent them $5. Now he's sending them sand and feathers. So Penelope was going to go off Blacksot to give her father a piece of her mind. But she got to Blacksot and realized that he wasn't sending the notes. He wasn't the one who was sending sand. He wasn't the one who was sending anything, because he was stuck in a cellar by two guys. When he wasn't in the cellar, they were making him work for them. So Penelope has gotten her father out and is bringing him back to his family. So then more stuff happens - so read the book. I didn't include much detail so, yeah, read the book!
I liked this book because the characters are really nice. It's not "perfecty-perfectly," "goody-goody-two-shoes," but there is magic. Not like most books, which are goody-goody-two-shoes magic. I would recommend this book to people who like fantasy readers but do not like "goody goody" books like Sophia the First.

ALL THE COLORS OF MAGIC by Valija Zinck
Penelope is a 10 year old girl with gray hair and the faint smell of smoke trails behind her wherever she goes. She lives a normal life with her mother and Granny Elizabeth. Well, aside from hearing things before they are said and the rain that falls on her birthday each year, that is not actually wet!
When Penelope discovers that her mom has been hiding her brilliant red hair with an ash paste, she discovers she is special. She can talk to the road, she really CAN hear things before they are said, and she can float—no—FLY!
When Penny finds out that her father, who she believed dead, is actually alive and is tormenting her mother with child support payments that dwindle to (literally) sand, Penny decides to put an end to it. She will go find him and tell him to stop!
What Penelope finds on this adventure is so much more: her true self, the support of friends, and one big surprise.
Kids will be drawn to this book because of the gorgeous cover art, but will stay for the zany adventures of a magical girl!
Hardcover on sale: Dec. 3, 2019. Recommended for 3rd grade and up. ❤️🗝💈💸🐱 #allthecolorsofmagic #valijazinck #middlegradebooks #middlegradefiction
In this magical adventure, we follow Penelope, whose grey hair has suddenly turned red and who has just discovered that the absent father she`s never known was a wizard and she has magic too. This is the story of her learning about her new gift and searching for her father, and there`s something about the writing style that reminded me of reading authors like Enid Blyton and E. Nesbitt, as it has such a cosy, nostalgic feel to it. I also really liked the worldbuilding and the different elements of Penelope`s magic, especially her being able to chat with the road (who was a great character) and her ability to fly, though I do wish we`d gotten to learn more about the magical community and how everything worked. Finally, I really appreciated how good the translation from German seemed to be. While German isn`t one of my languages, I do study two and so know how tricky getting smooth translations for passages can be, so I found how natural the language sounded in English really impressive. 4/5
A sweet light book. There was real potential for depth though, that never fully materialized. For example, her mother had, for most of her life, taken away her magic. If that isn't a powerful metaphor for abuse, I don't know what is. And yet, instead of there being fallout for it, the mom just goes "oh, ok now you're magical I guess" and that's the end of it. Similarly, the father's disappearance/abduction and reintroduction to the family could bring up deep and mixed emotions, paralleling experiences many children have had in their lives. Instead of addressing any of them, it's a simple happy reunion. Many other points like this are missed, and so the tale becomes a fluffy one, when it could have held real intensity.
All her life, Penelope has lived with her mother, grandmother, and cat Coco at their "dragon" house. She lives an ordinary life, except for the fact that she is the only girl in town with ash-grey hair. One day her mother gets injured by a tractor and for weeks Penelope worries if her mother will get better. During this time her thoughts travel to her father who left her family shortly after she was born. Then one morning her world changes forever, she wakes up with fiery red hair and learns that she has inherited magical abilities from her father. With this knowledge she sets out on an adventure to find her father and give him a piece of her mind. Unbeknownst to Penelope, her quest will heal the hole in her heart she has been carrying for ten years.
_____________ Ingenious and charming story that allows you to join Penelope in the knowledge and acceptance of her identity. It highlights the value of the family and narrates in a very enjoyable way, the development of her qualities, her proactivity and her search for solutions in the situations that she faces.
Sobib fantaasiakirjandust armastavale lapsele. :)
This novel puts a decidedly oddball spin on magic. The idea that it’s rooted in red hair (pun intended) is funny and cute. Having a road that actually talks to you and can speed you on your journey is novel, too; don’t you wish you could do that?
Penelope’s hair takes her on a wild adventure as she learns to master her newfound powers, negotiate the road and track down her long-departed father. It’s a charming story but decidedly geared for the younger set. Readers who like reading about spunky girls will enjoy Penelope and her determined tactics for getting to bottom of an old mystery.
All the Colors of Magic is a humourous and uplifting middle grade read about embracing your true self. Its vivid descriptions and fast pacing makes the book easy to get into. While the characterisation and details of the world isn't up to the calibre that I'm looking for (a common shortcoming in middle grade books), I nevertheless found the central messaging uplifting. I would certainly recommend this to young readers: Penelope is a positive role model in that she encourages authenticity.
What did you like about the book? All the Colors of Magic is a delightful fantasy about a girl who discovers she is more than she thinks she is. Living with her mother, grandmother, and mysterious cat in a house that resembles (to her) a dragon, ten year old Penelope learns that she is capable of amazing feats – and – that the father who her mother once loved so ardently may not actually be dead. As she comes into her power she sets off to discover the truth and right a wrong. A fine adventure for the under-12s
The title doesn’t fit the story – The only color that figures importantly in the plot is Penelope’s hair. Also, it takes approximately 100 pages for the adventure to truly begin. It feels like a lot of groundwork for a relatively quick payoff. There is also a brief section of the story, in which Penelope meets Gina & family, that takes away from the action more than it adds.
This is a fun read for kids who also enjoy Funke’s The Thief Lord (though this is a younger read) or the Araminta Spook series by Angie Sage. Readers who enjoy this might also like The Secret of Sooty Wick Inn by Lindgren.
I really loved this book. Is it lacking details about these special people and their abilities? Yes, but I don’t find that problematic because that wasn’t the point of the story, and my imagination can fill in the gaps. I loved so many of the characters (particularly several non-human ones) and this story gripped me from beginning to end. I love the message of the book about family and the ending was absolutely perfect.
Enjoyed this magical fantasy very much! Penelope is different than any of her peers. Her father has been absent for years. When she wakes up one morning with flaming red hair instead of the dull gray she's had for as long as she can remember, life as Penelope knows it is about to change forever. Will recommend this entertaining title to my library's schoolage fantasy lovers.
