Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay

Rate this book
Based on the acclaimed animated film, Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay sees the world's worst superheroes--including Harley Quinn, Deadshot and more--trying to steal a mystical item...one that shouldn't be in anyone's hands, let alone Task Force X's!

Amanda Waller has her "Get Out of Hell Free" card, but why did she go to such lengths to acquire it? Setting her Squad loose on the high seas, will the Wall regret her decision to lead this mission? A new Squad is formed, with the same old mission: creating havoc! Everything's going their way, but can the team keep their act togther? Some teammates cannot control their appetites. Others don't even try. Back on dry land, Deadshot returns to Waller's service. Blood promised aid to Waller's team, but his idea is surprisingly unhelpful. Now that Scandal knows one of Waller's secrets, whose side is she on?

Spinning off of the hit animated film, this graphic novel adaptation is a must-have for any fan of the Suicide Squad!

The sequel to the DC animated movie Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay. There were too many mystical elements and characters in this for a Suicide Squad book. It almost felt like Justice League Dark some of the time. The Wall has the Task Force X on the hunt for a mystical item that will keep the Spectre at bay. There's a lot of gruff, scratchy art in this which isn't my favorite. This was just OK.

Haven't watched the animated film but from this tie-in, it didn't really grab my interest, what with the odd paranormal/magical aspects that don't really seem to mesh with the Suicide Squad. It was fun to see Bane, especially now that he seems to be off Venom, but otherwise their lineup didn't have enough time to shine.

Originally published digitally, the best way to describe this sequel to the animated movie (of the same name) is as a first draft. It reads like the bones of a movie script, with none of the punch-up before it makes its way in front of actors. Which isn't so bad, except that you're left with a good story, poorly told; characters are flat and undefined, attempts at humour might as well say "insert better joke here," and it's all rather unsatisfying.

It's nice to get these digital comics in print form, though. Props to DC for that.

A really fun tie-in comic to the animated film that judges the actions and consequences much better than that film. Quite enjoyed the way it paid off the theology of the film (which was one of the better things about it). Art is a bit rough, as expected with a digital first thing (sadly - though the Marvel digital first stuff seems to be highlighting slightly stronger art these days with Jessica Jones, Cloak and Dagger, and Daughters of the Dragon).

*1.5*

Art-wise, this was rough, it felt very amateur for the most part, and since this was a continuation of the animated movie of the same name, this did not capture the look of the movie at all! And what’s weird is that Amanda Waller and Harley Quinn looked like they were traced over from their live-action movie counterparts! And what’s even weirder was that this story even managed to fit in a reference to the 2016 Suicide Squad movie!! Story-wise, it was interesting at first and I liked how it connected to the previous movie, but it kinda dragged during this one section where the Squad goes to this sea-ship, and the third act felt a bit muddled and rushed. I did like the appearances of different DC characters, but Ms. Clay, Dr. Polaris and Chimera were rather under-written and flat. The character dynamics in general weren’t all that great, and the story felt too supernatural for a Suicide Squad story.

Overall, the animated film that preceded this was a lot better by comparison.

I do like it when the Squad is made up of both well known villains like Bane, Harley, and Captain Boomerang and lesser known ones like Dr. Polaris, Chimera, and Ms. Clay as it allows the group to be more diverse and not have it be overwhelming with so many big names but it does mean you know the big names are not going to be in any serious danger which is probably why they always include one lesser name villain to act as a red shirt. I do like that they are dealing with more supernatural stuff as Waller is looking for a way to stay out of hell. I do have to laugh that Vandal Savage's daughter is named Scandal like really.

This comic had some fun moments with cameos and action sequences. However, the art style is a bit muddy, the plot is a retread on familiar ground from the animated film, and there are some typos in this short book that pulled me out of the story. Ultimately, this comic should really only be read by those who have watched the animated movie, as it takes place in this universe and directly connects to the events in that movie. I'm glad I read it, but would not recommend it unless you want to spend some more time in the DCAMU. Bad 2/5

Frenetic and a little muddy, this sequel to an animated movie also tries to tie the DCEU Suicide Squad movie into the canon, but nothing much comes of this story, which retreads a lot of ground from the animated film. A few original characters are interesting enough, but they don't get much to do. Jeff Parker writes a fine Harley Quinn, though, no small feat when this manic-pixie-nightmare-girl seems to be everywhere these days.

Not bad. Amanda Waller finds herself chased by the Spectre for all of her past sins. Her only hope is to retrieve a mystical relic that will save her soul from damnation. She assembles a Suicide Squad to help her find the relic, and along the way meets Deadman, Gentleman Ghost, Solomon Grundy and others.

Pretty typical Suicide Squad story, but this one did have a few twists I didn't see coming.

I feel like the whole was less than the sum of its parts. This story had a lot of fun beats, interesting ideas, and characters I enjoyed, but for some reason, it just didn't gel. I like Jeff Parker's work, but this I think came out of the oven before it was done. It could have been great with a few rewrites, but as it is, it is disposable fun.

I love when The Squad mix it up on membership, which they do here to great effect. At this point Deadshot and Harley are a bore. LOVED the mystic turn to this SUICIDE tale, makes for an actual challenge. ETRIGAN. DEADMAN. SPECTRE. MADAME XANADU. BANE. SCANDAL SAVAGE.

Parker writes Suicide Squad, so a sweet spot for me.

3.5 story. I felt like a good use of some members in ways I don't typically see.

This was okay but you could really feel this was broken up into 10 pages increments. Plus the artists kept changing way too frequently.

Exactly what you want out of the suicide squad. I hope there's continuation for this hilarious, action comic.

Nothing special, just Waller sending the squad to do a small mission.
