Had interesting start, I like bat family moments, but I'm so over Joker anything.

The Death of the Family is just an epic read. I struggled to put it down and out of all my graphic novels I would say this is certainly one of my all time favourites. PERFECT for Joker fans.

Death of the Family is a collection of comic book issues from many different series on the same event. When reading the full collection, that means each chapter (they refer to them as parts) features different protoganists fighting the Joker and the final chapter ties together all the stories.

While this pitch seems great, in practice, each chapter's story has the same shape. Something happens that springs a hero into action, the Joker uses the hero's predictable movement to put a counter measure in place, the Joker and the hero fight for awhile until eventually the Joker wins. I think the idea was to up the ante every time a hero is captured by the Joker, but the repetition makes it so predictable that I lost any sense of tension. Similarly, since the hero that is eventually captured in that chapter is also the protoganist, there is not another character who reacts with rage or distress due to their friends/family being taken by the Joker. It makes the terrible events feel less real to me since they are so infrequently referenced by the characters until the end of the story.

In, Death of the Family, Joker decides that the Robins, Bat Girl, etc (referred to as the Bat family). make him weaker, soft, and unfocused. Joker specifically thinks they are bringing him down cause Batman puts effort into caring for them and he wants Batman to focus on him. Batman overcomes in the end by trusting his Bat Family. Soooo I think the book is saying having family, friends, allies, etc. could make you weaker cause someone could target who you love to get to you, but if you trust them, you can be immensely stronger and actually take on challenges. I'm really stretching here to find that theme though and even if that is the book's theme, Spy Kids did it better.

I rated Batman Death of The Family Volume 3 by Scott Snyder five stars because it exceeded my expectations, and I couldn’t put it down. Set in Gotham City during Winter, the story follows Batman as he sets out on a quest to stop the Joker again. I discovered this book when I was searching the AHS library. What I really liked about it was when Joker tricked Batman and the Bat family this event happened because Joker knew where the Batcave is and how to get in When Joker kidnapping Alfred happened it made me think will Joker kill Alfred? and because of this experience it exceeded my expectations, and I couldn’t put it down. I also liked when Batman finally killed Joker Batman did this to finally end Jokers rain of terror and to stop him from killing his family WhenBatman was captured it made me wonder how batman got tricked by Joker again and because of this experience it exceeded my expectations, and I couldn’t put it down. This book teaches the reader That sometimes the only way to deal with your problems is to kill an ugly clown with his face ripped off. I would read another book by this author because there were real risks and I was hooked by the book. If you read any batman comic and liked it, then you would really enjoy this book.

I think this is a great example of why, consistently, comics just aren't that good..

Do I enjoy comics? Yes.
But GREAT comics, the likes of Watchmen, the Long Halloween, or even Hush (which I was never as big a fan of but can appreciate) remain an exception to the norm.

Comics scratch a certain itch. They're fun, especially when fast-paced. And the images add a certain quality -- I'm not sure Batman, for example, works if he had started off as a literary character.

But seldom are they able to capture the depth, the subtlety, and the intelligence of a story as writing can. Snyder's "Death of the Family" is I think what finally has convinced me of this. All the ingredients are there: the parallels and duality in the relationship between Batman and the Joker, the tense gripping plot, the dialogue and analysis. It's clear Snyder is an incredible writer, with a firm handle on the character, and an interesting story to contribute to the Bat pantheon.

But something about this one just didn't hit for me, and I can't blame the author.

I love Snyder and Capullo and largely consider their work on Batman to be the best beyond Grant Morrison, mixed feelings on this one. In some ways too ambitious in others truly striking. It soars in the core question of "Does the Joker actually know the identity of the Batman" and at the rare points when Snyder is allowed to fully embrace his natural predilections towards horror. I'm arguably too hard on this simply because of the high standard of Snyder and Capullo's other works.

the stapled face alone is just as iconic as this story. i get chills everytime i see it. what he did to barbara that night. no heroic sacrifice as batgirl, no tragic fight to the death, nothing. Just a Ring at the door, a bullet to the hip, and the Joker laughing over Barbara as she cries in a pool of her own blood, brutally crippled. the stapled face haunts Fans to this day

Wow.....that was....heavy. Amazing and heavy. I definitely had to walk away a couple of times because it was so macabre and disturbing but man....I don't think there will ever be a better joker story than this. WOW.

Entertaining & dark, but honestly, just makes you appreciate the classics even more.

Loved more of the Bat-Family and how each member gets their moment - but when you take away the shock factor of this story, the plot really is thin.

Snyder my man.
