For Michael Roberts it was an ordinary day until the sirens began to blare. Then the evacuation order came through...
The first step outside, he knew his world would never be the same. The city was in ruins. The people were people no more... changed into ravenous walking evil. Michael's true terror was about to begin...
It can be hard to find a good story when searching through the large amount of zombie literature. I highly recommend The Final Day by S. W. Salzman as a must read if you are interested in the zombie genre, or action, apocalyptic fare. The narration was well done, and helps pull you into the story. I think it helps when the author is the narrator because they know when to separate voices and can make the feeling behind the words come alive. And S. W. Salzman really does make the story come alive. Warning, there will be some minor plot spoilers ahead.
The Final Day brings you into the last 24 hours of Michael, a husband and a father, who has just been bitten and is infected and turning. He struggles against becoming a monster while he attempts to save his family. This story differs from much of zombie literature in that we the readers are shown the point of view from someone who is infected. Michael is given some hope though, a doctor is helping him and may have a cure.
The story is easy to follow along and does not get hung up on too much exposition on why this is happening. It just is, and now we have to fight it and see if we can survive. The descriptions of the zombies are grotesque and realistic. I also enjoyed Michael's inner dilemma of switching between trying to keep himself from becoming the monster, and the monster inside of him trying to take over. The story does not shy away from situations that may be too much for other writers. Sometimes you can't save everyone you want to save, and I liked that the author went there. It gave the story a gritty reality that some writers may avoid to try to keep a hopeful happy ending.
It was also neat to see how an infected person or even someone already full zombie may actually be thinking. Between Michael's flashbacks / visions and the actions of other zombies he encounters, in particular a zombie woman who Michael sees at the moment she lets go of her humanity, it makes you wonder if zombies are really as mindless as they appear. What if the person they were is trapped inside? I like a book that gives you things to question and think over.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This is a really good story. I highly recommend it, and look forward to more from this author.
The Final Day: The Full 24 Hours (Series: The Final Hours, Book 1-4) written and narrated by S. W. Salzman kept my interest overall and surprised me at the end. It’s a definite must listen for any zombie fan.
What’s it about? It’s about one man’s decent into madness while trying to survive the first twenty-four hours of the zompoc with his family. There’s some humor, pop-culture references, local mentions, and fast-paced action. Without giving spoilers, this is all I’ll say. I was prepared to give the story four stars, but the ending really put the book into a stands out from others in the genre category so 4 ½ stars- I’d like to see some things elaborated on. With that being said, if you begin this and some things are a bit muddled, stick with it as it will make sense later on. Salzman as a narrator is fanatic- if you haven’t checked out other narrations by him, you are missing out.
Overall, I recommend, especially if you enjoy zombies or looking for something new in the genre.
Parental guidance/trigger warnings: Due to spoilers only saying this is a zompoc book- it contains things like violence and death. And lots of swearing (but don’t fret, it’s the good kind).
*I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you for allowing me to listen and review the book!
First book I’ve listened to that’s written by Salzman. He’s one of my top 3 favorite narrators. So glad he’s a good writer too! Great story, cool idea and wonderful character building. There are even a few funny moments.... but mostly it’s serious stuff. The story is original and very entertaining. Action packed from the start and never stops.
I was voluntarily provided this review copy at no charge by the author, publisher and or narrator.
Excellent zombie tale of one man fighting the infection wile trying to keep his family safe Fast-paced action and lots of highs and lows kept it interesting I’ve been a fan of S. W. This was a really good story. It is too short to go into detall. S.W. Salzman is a really good writer and narrator of Zombie books!I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
I love anything zombie-related and this book was amazing! It was gory, devastating, and absolutely terrifying to think about something like it happening in real life!
This awesome audio following a man, Michael Roberts, through the first 24 hours of the Zombie apocalypse as he is trying to save his family but at the same he himself is turning into a zombie. So this is a very different story than your normal Zombie story, it is new and fresh and really good. Mr. Salzman is a great narrator too and he made the audio so good you should not miss out on it if you a audio fan like me. He can pull you into the story and make you feel as though you are right there, it added another layer to this story.
