It can be hard to find a good story when searching through the large amount of zombie literature. I highly recommend The Final Day by S. W. Salzman as a must read if you are interested in the zombie genre, or action, apocalyptic fare. The narration was well done, and helps pull you into the story. I think it helps when the author is the narrator because they know when to separate voices and can make the feeling behind the words come alive. And S. W. Salzman really does make the story come alive. Warning, there will be some minor plot spoilers ahead.
The Final Day brings you into the last 24 hours of Michael, a husband and a father, who has just been bitten and is infected and turning. He struggles against becoming a monster while he attempts to save his family. This story differs from much of zombie literature in that we the readers are shown the point of view from someone who is infected. Michael is given some hope though, a doctor is helping him and may have a cure.
The story is easy to follow along and does not get hung up on too much exposition on why this is happening. It just is, and now we have to fight it and see if we can survive. The descriptions of the zombies are grotesque and realistic. I also enjoyed Michael's inner dilemma of switching between trying to keep himself from becoming the monster, and the monster inside of him trying to take over. The story does not shy away from situations that may be too much for other writers. Sometimes you can't save everyone you want to save, and I liked that the author went there. It gave the story a gritty reality that some writers may avoid to try to keep a hopeful happy ending.
It was also neat to see how an infected person or even someone already full zombie may actually be thinking. Between Michael's flashbacks / visions and the actions of other zombies he encounters, in particular a zombie woman who Michael sees at the moment she lets go of her humanity, it makes you wonder if zombies are really as mindless as they appear. What if the person they were is trapped inside? I like a book that gives you things to question and think over.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This is a really good story. I highly recommend it, and look forward to more from this author.
