A few self-reflections from the author:
This is the third time I've reviewed a novel that I've written; and this is the third book in a loosely connected series.
As usual, Amazon and CreateSpace publishing did a very nice job on the printing and feel of the finished product. I have no complaints.
I went into writing each novel with a different mindset. To be fully honest, this particular story I wasn't terribly excited about until I went back and began to reread it. I found myself pretty blown away by how engaging the story is, its overall creepy vibe, and the way it grabs you and pulls you in so that you don't want to put it down. Considering I experienced all of this while reading a story where I knew everything that was going to happen, tells me that I'm either very egotistical, or I did something very right (haha). I can only imagine what a new reader might experience while jumping into this.
I think that I improved considerably on pacing and creating enough mystery that you want to keep turning the pages. While this book is largely horror/suspense based, I also think that I managed to successfully dabble in an area of writing that always intimidated me: action. And there seems to be just enough of it to make this story fun, as well as scary.
If THE KNAVES is the dark back-story to the series, and THE LONERS is the cozy character-driven mystery which forms the central pillar, then THE BROKEN is definitely the exciting and suspenseful 'movie' in novel form. As usual, I gave it 4 stars, because as much as I loved it, there's always room to improve.
I hope you enjoy!
