I would have given this book 4 stars but the author's intense hatred for liberals is off putting. I really enjoyed the descriptions of the logistics of surviving an apocalyptic situation but it was ultimately ruined by the narrative of evil liberals want to take your guns destroy Christian values and apparently bring the country to ruins. Most people, liberals and conservatives alike are decent hardworking people who just want to live and let live.

There are a lot of things I liked about this book

I enjoyed most of the characters and found the storyline to be fairly good. In fact, if it weren't for two major issues, I would have scored it a four. My first issue was that the way everything worked out for the characters was just too unbelievably tidy. They were able to get scribe to the farm safe and sound just in time. They managed to procure all the supplies they needed with virtually no problems. They conveniently end up with a bunch of soldiers to assist them. And, of course, everyone gets along delightfully. It's just not believable. The other major issue I had was the scathing portrayal of liberals. If this book is to be believed, all liberals are heathens out to take everyone's guns and destroy the world's moral compass. I do not feel this is the appropriate place to get into a detailed description of why these portrayals are completely unfair and inaccurate, but I will say I found the snarky commentary entirely unnecessary. I am a liberal who enjoys shooting and am a firm believer in ethical behavior and thinking for myself and I have yet to meet a liberal who is anything like your portrayal. Please keep in mind that not everyone who disagrees with you is the enemy.

Know they enemy

I finished this simplistic tale for one reason, to learn more about the mindset of the far right, ultrconservative, anti-intellectual, nationalist, Christian, paranoid conspiracy propagating types that seem to be blindly pushing my America to a very dark place. This was not the post apocalyptic story I hoped for. It was about scavengers, and about a political agenda. I learned nothing new about prepping from this author. I did learn more about the mindset of those who chose Trump to lead America into the gutter, deeper into the corporate and financial swamp. I learned more about what they fear and how they think. Reading this shopping list of a story was a struggle at times, but worthwhile for the insight.

while the characters were engaging, the plot was good, I would suggest an editor, however, while at the beginning of the book the mistakes were few by the end there were a lot of them. my main complaint and its why I gave it 2 stars instead of 4 is how the author based her entire storyline on the current political arena. where she blames the "liberals" and the Republican party as being the cure-all. I read to get away from that type of stress in the real world. I do not need it in my Fiction.

It didn't bother me that the protagonist of the story must be a multi millionaire, with unlimited funds to spend. what did bother me was her insistence to include her wacky ass political views into the story. All democrats are traitors, all right wing nut jobs that believe alternate facts are the only true patriots, give me a fucking break. If you really, really, really love the orange one I'm sure that you'll believe that this book is your new bible. As for me I was hoping this would be a book I'd enjoy, I like the genre, but this one is too fucking wacky for me to recommend to anyone.

I couldn’t get past the first chapter, as it was all about her, the main character/author ‘s background, point of view, politics. Etc. Jeez, get to the point and get on with the story. Go back to nursing or whatever, and please don’t write another word for public consumption.

Pure dreck

All conservatives are pure and saintly all liberals are evil anti American monsters. This seems like a formula type book at first then goes way off the rails. Don't bother with this one.

Excellent story and to my way of thinking very close to what may soon happen with our Government. Didn't suffer details because Ms. Anderson was full of details and more details. A great story and look forward to the next book. Love to see it in a movie but the Liberals in Hollywood would never want the People to see the truth.

UNBELIEVABLE!

This book has both positive AND negative points, but the negative is absolutely ridiculous and unbelievable. WHY, WHY, WHY would an author deliberately try to alienate a huge chunk of the population that could be potential readers? If that was her goal, she should be pleased with herself. Just because people and groups have different political beliefs does not mean that they are willing to cause all out civil war and kill hundreds of millions of people, just because they aren't getting their way. Adults don't think that way, unless they have severe mental issues. Just being a member of a different political party does not cause such thoughts or actions, at least not in the USA. I

Now, for the positives. The author is obviously very talented. The book was well written, well organized, well researched. The story flowed very smoothly. Before the political ridiculousness showed up at 70-something% of the way through the book, I was really enjoying reading it.

Prepper Primer

So a perfect former Major who knows everything about everything gathers all of her perfect friends, her perfect sons and hunkers down on her huge farm , because they all believe her premonition. Yes, the world as we know it will collapse. Those doggone leftists have messed everything up. However, on the farm a new Utopia emerges. There is no jealousy, no pain, no irritation, no disagreement. Everything works out, well, perfectly.

Denise inheritated a large farm outside a North Carolina town. She has noticed the economy struggling with her fellow nurses being laid off or losing hours. Fearing that a disaster is coming, she asks her sons and their wives to move out to the farm with her, and hopes that her closest friends will do the same. As they start to gather supplies and build extra space for new arrivals, society starts to fall apart and violence comes to their town.

I found Denise to be quite likable for an MC. She is living a comfortable life at her farm and doing her job because she loves it, not because she needs to. She is in the process of building a new wing on her house so that her sons and their wives can move in with her, and was brought up as a prepper. When her hours start getting cut, she is already concerned about the amount of local businesses going under and decides to just quit and concentrate on getting the farm ready for the trouble that is coming. She finds out that Tom, her old friend and the contractor taking care of work at the farm, has also been getting the same worrying premonitions about disaster coming and she asks him to get work finished on her property so the farm is self sufficient and ready to house everyone she cares about.

I liked a lot of the other characters too. Tom is a good character. He is kind, hard working and organised and it is clear that he and Denise have an unspoken connection that remains in the background through the book, but fits nicely. I was kind of rooting for them as a couple because they already had an established relationship as friends. We get to see them as the group start to have meetings about joining forces if the worst happens. There is also the backdrop of the financial collapse as places in town close down and her friends start losing their jobs, causing them to decide to move out to the farm before everything collapses. I liked seeing the gradual deterioration to start with and then the rapid collapse of everything. I think that might be how it would happen in real life.

I always enjoy seeing how the characters prepare for a disaster like this. I enjoy the tense supply runs and the run ins with people who want to take what belongs to our heroes. There is a gradual build up of the tension until the real bad guys sweep into the town and start to take over. There is also the background of the problems going on in the US and the terrorist attacks that are fuelling this financial crisis. Planes are being shot down, credit cards become useless and the farm continues to work hard to be ready for anything that comes. I've read a lot of books with this type of plot-preparing for the disaster, gathering loved ones before the disaster and final supply runs, followed by defending the property from the usual gangs of psychos. I admit that however many times I read that scenario, I never get tired of it and that is what made me pick this one up. I actually liked it more than I expected to based on the Goodreads reviews that I looked at.

Some reviewers have commented about things coming too easily for the main characters but I didn't really feel that myself. Denise already has the farm and the building work is advanced when she and Tom decide to get the hammer down to finish it. Tom has plenty contacts he can still get materials from and I doubt that many in the local area had the money to buy wood and DIY supplies so I'm not really surprised that the things they needed were available. The group were also stocking up before the main collapse hits so that did give them time to get things done. I do wish that the tradesmen we get in were as hard working and reliable as Tom and his team as they really got things done quickly which might be a tad unrealistic!

I've seen complaints in reviews about right wing anti-liberal rants but I honestly didn't find it that bad compared to a lot of prepper books that I read. Yes the characters were right wing so I expect them to be protective of their guns, untrusting of Democrat politicians and view liberal policies with open dislike. Most prepper books are like that and I'm used to ignoring a few of the more extreme opinions in the genre, as long as I find the story entertaining. While the author has sympathy for the 'Trump' character President at times, she is clear that she doesn't always like his tone and words, and is unhappy that he is in hiding instead of dealing with the crisis. She rightly thinks that fake news is used too often by both sides for point scoring. It is liberal snowflakes that her ire is mostly directed towards and I can understand that viewpoint. I found it a bit more balanced than reviews led me to believe.

I've already got hold of the second book in the series and look forward to catching up with Tom and Denise and the whole posse!

I read a lot and always enjoy dystopian fiction. However, I can say - without hesitation - that this is the ABSOLUTE WORST book that I have ever read in any genre. I'm not going to beat it apart, piece by piece, but a few points:

a woman (who is a prepper) has a dream that there will be a societal collapse, doesn't know why, doesn't know when, but proceeds to spend tens of thousands of dollars stocking up her farm to hold out for the next couple of decades. She has a group of about 30 family and friends - medical professionals, construction managers, an electrician, a seamstress, a baker, etc. (you know, all of the handy professions) and calls them together to say, "I had a dream that the country is going to collapse, so I want you to come here to live on my farm." They do! Don't even have to ask them twice! They gut their homes and medical/veterinary practices and relocate. Not only that, but they All Get Along! There is never even one instance of two individuals disagreeing about what to do or how to do it. Over time they add a couple of token minorities (including a retired Catholic priest, even though - well you know, but he's a nice guy and never swings a censer at them).

If I understood any of this muddled mess, the US economic collapse was caused by Greece defaulting on their loans to the World Bank(?) and when the US President decides to go into hiding (for an economic crisis?) he is kidnapped by evil left-wing Democrats (which I believe is any Democrat in this author's scenario) who then call in United Nations forces for a hostile takeover of the government. And the UN says, "Okey dokey! We're in!"

Oh! One thing that bothered me more than the inanity of the story line? The author has never heard of contractions! It is always "I will" or "he would" instead of I'll or he'd - and that may not sound like much, but it is SO awkward to read an entire book of such annoyingly stilted dialog. Think about it - No Apostrophes!

There is so much more to roll your eyes over in this book - but in spite of the fact that I got it free on Kindle, I would like to forget I ever wasted my time on it - so fair warning!

Interesting Take on the Apocalypse

I really enjoyed this book. Nice to read a book that the author knows medical terms and correctly uses them. Also knows military and gun information AND uses those right. Wish I could afford everything she could! Looking forward to the next one!

I really tried but it wasn’t meant to be.

The writing was more telling and listing of information than experiencing the story and fluent and story telling way. And then there was the main female character. God she is a self righteous and judgy one, it is annoying right from the start. Miss experienced and know it all with her world view which is of course the ultimate one and all others are beneath it.
And the current president pretty much has tarnished and ruined any kind of reputation and common sense one might have expected when it comes to that group of people living in an alternative reality and the action shown by his followers. Which are represented in this book.
Pretty much the rest of the world watches that shit show in stunned amusement of delusional people living and creating their own alternative reality. I simply with the rest of the world am through with that shit show, sorry!!

I thought it was over written with too many mundane details. Loved that Denise considered herself "middle class" with the inherited farm, money left to her boys to build houses on the farm, a trust fund from her parents etc.
She was a prepper, but it seemed everything came very easy to her to set up her Langston Farm compound. In a real world prepper scenario things don't just fall into your lap, building materials don't just appear as you need them at the local hardware/lumber store and trips to Wal-mart post event don't or I wouldn't think would have all the necessities your group needs to add to their inventory.
Not to mention the people living at the farm, no strife, no disagreements, no opposite opinions...wow really??
I would consider this a "fluff" prepper novel.

Not for me!

I was all the way to page 92 when I threw in the towel! Yes, I am a liberal, but reading a book I paid for and continually reading about my being a snowflake, an idiot for my thinking, I couldn’t do it. The book started out great, I thought I was going to enjoy it. However, if I wanted to read about politics, I would have bought a book about politics. I’ve read many books about EMPs, the zombie apocalypse, etc., not one of them criticized one of the political parties throughout the book.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. I understand that many Preppers are conservative, and it makes sense that Prepper characters might have a conservative viewpoint. It doesn’t usually bother me to read one-sided political opinions. However, there was one rant against liberals that seemed to suggest the liberals joined together and senselessly destroyed the country for the rest of the good people. This kind of political intrigue from the author is difficult to accept without more grounding in fact or plot. The author’s personal weakness to political mind control is showing

The large cast of characters are mere backdrops to the larger Prepper story instead of having flesh and personality. For example, the character Amy arrives at the compound having just lost someone significant. Yet neither she nor her children express any emotion other than what is described as recovery from “panic” at passing through the event that led them to Denise. How could they not spend even a single weepy night?

In the beginning there is the near unbelievable premise that a single working mother has so much to share. Denise has over 700 acres of land with no mortgage and hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend on expensive goods to store for community and beast. Friend after friend lines up with a perfect assortment of skill sets to match a list of those necessary for survival. No one carries a grudge against anybody else in the commune. No one is greedy or tries to abuse their position. No one balks at assignments. Remarkably, more than one person moves the plot forward with dreams of premonition.

Yet the premise of the American way being halted by economics is fresh and the writing is good, if unimaginative. I managed to finish the book, though I often felt annoyed at the author slapping characters and events together to meet the needs of her plot.

Preview of 2022?

For several years I've felt that we are headed towards another Cival War. This book serves as an excellent warning of what may be coming soon. Recently I read an excellent newsletter by a highly respected Financial Analyst who has unerringly predicted each of recessions and terrorist activities in the last forty years. His latest prediction is a new very deadly Civil War beginning sometime around 2022. He says this will be a total war for control of our country between left wing fanatics allied with gangs and black trouble makers against the rest of us. His horrifying prediction is 26,000,000 dead. I hope he is wrong, but he has alway been accurate in the past! So much of what the author of this book says is wrong with the current status quo in the United States is true that her book is much like a guide into our near term future. Interestingly 2022 will be the beginning of our next presidential administration! I believe it is highly possible that frauds of illegal voters voting and many voting several times will lead to armed and violent discontent with the outcome of the election.

It was ok

I thought this had a great plot even if the author clearly thinks liberals are the root of all evil. I gave it 3 stars for the good writing and because it’s the first time I heard of “preppers in regards to an apocalypse but I took the last two stars because the entire book is the main character “telling” us everything that happens -there is no showing and that prevented the book from being intense for me -it was very even keel. Also everything the main character has a bad dream it’s premonition and she makes drastic changes that everyone else just follows and idk if I like that. With that being said I did overall enjoy the book and I’ll be getting the second one

Another book about America's infrastructure being under attack. I don’t doubt that it could and will happen one day; probably even sooner than the world thinks.
This first book of a two-book series is, Denise, who is a nurse and a prepper seeing things in America start to tank and she also is having dreams or, “premonitions about what is going to happen. Her 750-acre ranch/farm is where a bunch of people; at first family and friends then, friends of friends set things up to ride out the storm. That is where they are when the hits
I am going to read the next book because, it is short and I want to know how this one end or resolves.
She does mention William Forester’s book, One Second After; which is a very excellent book.

Downgraded review

While the book is well written, the reason I downgraded my review is because of the political push of the author against the democratic party.

I believe this political division drive by many authors only deepens the divide between the democratic and republican parties.

Authors need to take responsibility for this and stop pushing this type of unnecessary rhetoric. The storyline truly doesn't require it to tell the story, especially with the depth of anger and hatred shown here!

Thoroughly enjoyed the initial build up of the decline into the scenario that the writer presented. This is my first political post-apocalyptic read. While I do not agree with the portrayal of “liberals”. This was very well written and I like that the author was not afraid to inject what I can only assume is their own political opinion into the story line. The characters are powerful and dynamic. Very curious to see what happens next. Great job leaving the ending suspenseful.

I love this book!

I am a first time reader of this author and will be reading many more of her books. I loved everything about this book, the cast came alive and the farm setting is great. This book is also a little bit of a learning experience for what it takes to be prepared for a disaster. I can't wait for book two to be released, so what I will say is get this book and give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

I hope if it ever happens there are real people like these.

I am more of a middle of the road type of person. I am always shock to read books like this. My Grandmother was canning, churning butter and growing enough food for 12 kids and no they did not have electric or indoor plumbing. So she was way a head of the people in this book. Oh I learned to shot at nine years old. I think they would have loved this book.

good story overall

I would have given 5 stars, except for a couple of things: one of the reasons I read this was because it is supposedly set in North Carolina! Well, other than the mention of being somewhere near/between Charlotte and Asheville and throwing around the names of a couple of military bases, nothing was relatable to my home state, especially the weather! But what really drove me crazy, was overuse of !!!!

In a perfect world

I had a hard time believing that 2 people could do all the prepping in the time that the author used. The description of the president and minority leader brought to mind current leaders and honestly made it hard for me to finish the book. Out of the many dystopian books I have read this one was the least believable.

Love it

I've been reading many apocalyptic book recently and this one is one of the best. The character development was great, especially due to the sheer number of people involved in the story line. I can't wait for the next book. There's so many different ways to mix and match the story line going forward. I can't wait for the next book.

WELL WORTH YOUR TIME

Lots of great prepped information, lots of characters with the main characters well developed. This was a long read with a few typos but nothing too distracting. Very engaging and believable story. Great job Ms Anderson! Anxiously awaiting the next book in this series!

Rates up in the top of a long list of post apocalyptic books I have read

I have read a truckload of post apocalyptic books. Some really good ones , some really bad ones and some in between.

This one rates in the top 3 or 4 good ones for me. My only complaint is......having to wait for the next book in the series.

Seriously it is a good read.
