As the Halloween season approaches, the newest residents of small town Eminence are hard at work opening a haunted house attraction called Hellsworld Hotel. The local townsfolk are excited, especially the teenagers. Normally you would have to drive to one of the big cities for something like this. But local Sheriff Stan Maxell is skeptical, even more so when he takes notice of how many of the young people in his town are disappearing.Hellsworld Hotel is a tale of family horror in the vein of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and House of 1000 Corpses, brought to you by the author of The ADHD Vampire and Fast Times at Cine Mega Plex High.
Matthew Vaughn lives in Shelbyville, Kentucky. He is the father of three little girls and a little boy, yet he and his wife are just big kids too. Unexpected...shamelessly vile...like, as in, eeewww...
Whatever I expected, this was not it. I snagged this one from a wish list, not even remembering when I'd put it up or why, but it was the right length and I was pressed for time, so I didn't read the blurb again.
Well, I can't be sure if that was the reason I was so shocked by this, or whether it was just a truly shocking story, but it took me on that adrenaline ride I was after, so full marks.
Look, we all have different ideas and definitions of Hell. I could have started with something like: Tie me up, staple my eyes open and show me the Kardashians on a never-ending loop, and I'd be in my own personal Hell.
However, this story pushed it so much further. Take HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, HELLRAISER and TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, throw it in a pot of boiling water, slowly stir in THE HILLS HAVE EYES and HOSTEL, and add just a little bit of SAW for flavor, and you've got the broth that is HELLSWORLD HOTEL.
Or am I just going soft?
PS: There might be a hidden message in there about women washing their hair regularly...
There is a new attraction in a typical US small town: a haunted house. What makes the exhibits so special and why is the number of missing persons in the area dramatically? The author doesn't invent the wheel anew. But he leads you into a nightmarish story you wouldn't have expected, especially if it's the first book of this author (like for me). Fast paced action, gory details, explicit sex, violence, satanism... here you'll find many motifs of classic horror. Okay, the story is a bit bizarre with many nasty details but the author got you hooked once you started. The ending is fine too. Really recommended, but definitely nothing for the faint hearted.
Something is wrong in the small town of Eminence. The convenience store is completely out of Mother F*king Black Skull of Death, the most addictive and madness inducing energy drink ever. Not to worry. There is a strange new family in town, and they want you on their haunted house tour. This is a scary house tour indeed, especially if you enter for a sneak preview. There are no ghosts here; the monsters are human and they serve a dark master. Welcome to the Hellsworld Hotel. There's no time to check in, and it is unlikely that you will leave in one piece. Serious bloodshed, gore and transgression grace these halls. Is someone wearing your face? Read this now and be alarmed, but keep your copy handy to re-read in October.
One, I don't enjoy splatterpunk but I know that SCREAM fans do, so I want to bring them some titles from the underground scene that they might enjoy.
Two, there were some editing/grammar/typo stuff in here that detail oriented readers would not appreciate.
But! I think that Matthew Vaughn has a great knack for the splatterpunk genre and fans of lean, mean, scream queen gore/sex/violence will love stories like this. Novella length, 120 pages. Review being sent to Scream on Monday! (March 4th)
HELLSWORLD HOTEL, by Matthew Vaughn, is a book that has more than enough gore and unique ways to die, to satisfy even the most blood-thirsty horror fan. It's Fall, and something new is coming to the small town of Eminence. For the very first time, a haunted house attraction is going to open for the Halloween season. When a new family moves into town with this vision in mind, the teenagers there are notably thrilled to have something unique to do.
". . . the thing about small towns . . . There's just not a lot to do, so when something new comes along everybody gets excited."
Of course, even in the movies, there has to be at least one dissenter in the group. In this case, it's Sheriff Stan Maxwell, who has his suspicions about the "odd family" right from the start.
"I have a bad feeling about this . . . "
While there is a "motive" to this story, the main emphasis is placed on the descriptions of gruesome deaths and tortures that occur. This is not a "slow burn, atmospheric" read, but rather an "in-your-face, sadistic slasher" book. Fans of more extreme horror will love the scenes here, while those with more . . . delicate tastes . . . may want to look elsewhere.
". . . The whole place just seemed twisted."
Overall, I found this to be a fun, if gratuitous, story of a peculiar family's lust for causing pain and death. Some of the scenes were especially unique, so detailed that you could virtually cringe at the mere thought of what you'd read. The one thing I would have liked different was a little more depth and backstory for the murderous new family, and a little less detailing of the lives of some of the "throwaway" characters--those whose only purpose was to add to the body count. All together, I found this a "fun" Halloween-themed novel of more extreme horror (think "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", but with more dark comedy).
Recommended to fans of slasher novels and films, or those with strong stomachs who like a lot of carnage and a high body count.

Jesus.
I’ve read a few of Vaughn’s works now – part 1 and part 2 of ’30 Minutes or Less.’ In one of the reviews I said something along the lines of – things were humming along and then it just kind of ending. I’m pretty sure it was part 1. If part 1 and part 2 had been together – it would’ve had the fluid feel that ‘Hellsworld Hotel’ had.
Short on story but packed to the rim of the toilet with splatter, this thing just rolls along and I ended up reading it in a single sitting because I was having so much fun and wanted to know what was going to happen.
I found this story a mixture of a few well-known movies, but to list them I think would pigeon-hole this story too much. You’d be looking specifically for those moments and you’d miss out on the excitement.
The gist of the book is this – in small town Eminence, a new group has moved in and is renovating a house. They are turning it into a haunted house attraction and the residents are excited. The sheriff – not so much. The group gives him a bad vibe, but he has to stay within the law.
As more kids are reported missing, he suspects them more and more.
I found it interesting that Vaughn had the main characters as background players. While we get quickly introduced to new kids and townsfolk – who quickly get sliced and diced, we are distracted from what is happening in the shadows. I loved these characters and definitely want to see more from Zed, Lucy and the gang. Heck, even the character of Dog was intriguing, even if only offered up for shock value and grimace-inducing-moments.
This book is set up to continue on with the haunted house travels, but also as a single read. I personally would love to see more of what this clan can get up to and of course, down the road they’d get their punishment at some point. But for now, this was a really well done story with a ton of horrific deaths and some of the best B movie, slasher scenes out there.
The best description I could give this;
You decide to watch a movie based on cover and small synopsis, not fully convinced it’ll hold your attention and before you know it you are fully transfixed by what’s happening and when it’s done, you want to go back and re-watch it again and again.
Kudos to Vaughn for doling out a heavy dose of blood and carnage!
"He couldn't help but wonder what kind of haunted house this was supposed to be. The whole place just seemed twisted."
Hellsworld Hotel is the first book I've read from Matthew Vaughn, and it had such a fun set-up. This is a good Halloween read, and I'm happy I was able to get it in time for October.
This is a novella, so it moves fairly quickly. Lots of murder, gore, and sex. This one is on the more extreme side, so be aware of that if you decide to pick it up. I'm going to give a content warning that not all of the sexual acts are consensual.
There were enough typos that I found it to be distracting, and it kept taking me out of the story. It was still an enjoyable read, but I kept getting tripped up.
If you enjoy haunted house stories where there's an actual killer (Hell Fest, Halloween Resurrection, The House by the Cemetery book etc.), this is one to read. I didn't really find that it added anything new to the format, but it's still entertaining horror territory.
Hellsworld Hotel is the first book by Matthew Vaughn that I have read, and if any of his other works are similar, it definitely will not be the last. Fans of iconic horror franchises The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and House of 1,000 Corpses will identify parallels and rejoice in Vaughn's ability to put in words some scenes that we have seen on the big screen.
This novella is PACKED with all the brutal horror, gore, and sex that you can imagine. So if those are things you enjoy seeing and reading about, then I highly recommend this one for some quick entertainment. There were a couple times I closed my eyes while reading because the scenes were freaking me out. The only problem with closing your eyes while reading? YOU CAN'T KEEP READING! So between that and my random gasps I am sure I provided those around me while reading a lot of entertainment as well.
When it comes to novellas, if they leave me wanting more then that means they did their job for me. And this book is no different. I wanted more! I found myself engrossed with this haunted house attraction and wanting more and more people to go inside.
One thing that I would have liked to see from this book is to build the characters up a little more so that I have more of a connection to them. I wanted to be sad and a little more afraid that they are being butchered and strung up alive. There are a lot of deaths in this compact novella so I can also see how that might have been difficult. It did not take away from my experience, but it definitely would have made it better for me if I got to know some of the characters a little more.
In the end I am giving this 4 stars! This is a must-read for lovers of slasher horror and for those who are not afraid of some gore!
This was a great haunted house gory thriller! I'm a sucker for haunted houses! This reads a lot like Texas Chainsaw style family affair. First read from Mr Vaughn. This came across my horror crew's feeds so thanks!
I received an arc from Matthew Vaughn and dove right in. I love Vaughn’s style of writing, and here we have an all-out assault on your senses. From the opening page, you get brutal in your face horror. For those looking for something light to read that doesn’t offend, you may want to skip this one. Vaughn’s latest novella is a love letter to extreme horror and he holds nothing back. This is a book for those who like their fiction raw and unapologetic, and love films that border on obscene. Zed and his family are a sadistic bunch of folks who open a haunted house with a hidden agenda. It;'s that hidden agenda that drives the book.
Despite all the violence and gore, it’s a solid read that sets up a premise that we’ve seen before, but the execution (pardon the pun), and the why of it is the blood that flows through this books veins.
This is a writer that can craft a good story while also making feel a little queasy. It’s horror that gets under your skin and does a great job of making you feel uncomfortable. Sometimes it’s the why of it all that’s so disturbing. We know that there are sick people out there and in Hellsworld Hotel, they’re the main characters. Vaughn has a knack for extreme horror, but his talent as a writer brings the action to life. You aren’t simply reading these scenes, you feel as if you’re experiencing them along with the characters. It knows it’s not for everyone, but it doesn’t care. There’s an audience for this time of novella and it shows that as a genre, splatterpunk is alive and well. As a fan of Vaughn’s, I think this is by far his most disturbing release. Gone is the dark humor and in its place, we find mayhem and chaos. Halloween has come a bit early this year and all I can do is offer you a warning. You may also want to skip out on the haunted houses in October.
“I never knew much about people until I took one apart just to see how it worked.”
Hellsworld Hotel by Matthew Vaughn is about a family which moves to a new town and opens up a haunted house attraction called Hellsworld Hotel. The local teenagers are extremely excited about this as the halloween season approaches. However the Sheriff Stan Maxwell is very skeptical about this because the number of young people disappearing has been increasing since this strange family opened up shop in town.
I devoured this book in one sitting. This is a creepy halloween book. It reads like a movie, its central theme echoes The House Of 1000 Corpses and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. All the blood, gore, frights, torture and brutality is very present along with dark humour. This is why I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
The central characters are the family consisting of the couple Zed and Lucy, sister Jessica and brother Pete. These larger than life villains play their parts well and encapsulate extreme and unbelievable horror throughout the story. The humour comes naturally and its well timed. There are many moments of disturbing visuals including those where the victims are being tortured. It was at these moments I had to put the book down for a second and cringe!!
A fun halloween read for fans of classic slasher horror movies. I can recommend this book enough. This was my first book by Matthew Vaughn and I can’t wait to get some more.
You know those sketchy Haunted Houses that pop up in one of the foreclosed neighborhoods? Something called the Hellbilly Hotel set up by a transient family to bilk some money from the small town rubes. They promise big scares to the drunken and bored rabble but never deliver. Well the Harrington family delivers in spades. This tale has chainsaws, hooks and horrors galore. This book felt to me like a blending of Tobe Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes. After reading this splatter fest, I guarantee you will never feel safe at a seasonal Haunted House again.
A blood spattering nightmare for a small town when the Hotel comes to town. Vaughn takes the chainsaw massacres and all the gore that follows and whips his own horrorcore masterpiece. Vaughn leaves not a single body left broken or bleeding to its death.
Halloween night is fast approaching the town of Eminence. There is a new haunted house attraction, that will be opening to the public, very soon. The teenager are really excited about this attraction. Usually that would have to drive to a bigger city, to see something like this. Days before the haunted house is suppose to open, teenagers start disappearing from the town. Sheriff Maxwell, wants to go and question the people who are running Hellsworth Hotel. The first day that Hellsworth Hotel opened, there is a line a mile long, waiting to get in. Whats waits beyond the doors, is something that they will never forget. There are no ghosts in this story, just a family of sick monsters.. If you are looking for blood and guts and plenty of gore, this book is for you. It reminds me of the movie, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The Hellsworth Hotel, is pure hardcore horror. Matthew Vaughn, does not hold back any puches.
Well... a few of my fellow goodreads friends warned me this short is LONG in horrific, twisted acts - and they weren't lying! Have to say though, listening in audio did make a good portion almost comical. Hearing so much demented perversion voiced (who'd a thought it possible) truly upped the ante. Quintin W. Allen did a great job narrating, too!
For an extraordinarily gruesome, and sexually graphic book - this one has it in spades!
Wow, this is something! If I hadn’t seen a certain movie years ago, which got me hooked on horror, I don’t believe I would have finished this one! This is “blood & guts” horror! And the author brought it all together so it works!
I loved this book! This was my first bizzaro horror book. It was creepy and disgusting and everything it was supposed to be. The fact that it takes place in an area I am familiar with made it even more enjoyable to read. I can’t want to read more from this author.
From beginning to end had the feeling of being in a horror movie 😃 Was hard to put this novella down once I got started. Non stop thrill ride ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book was awesome and hardcore! In the description it compares (mentions)it to Texas chainsaw massacre and rob zombie so with that being said you should already expect some very explicit and cringing parts so don’t be surprised I mean have you seen a rob zombie flick? There is blood , gore , sexual content I mean it’s a fucking slasher/horror so don’t get your panties in a twist when you read through it, The book is really good in my opinion It gives you gore and all and I’m so glad I bought it just randomly without knowing much about it, the synopsis itself had me hooked and it did not let me down.... as I read this book it felt as if I was watching a moving and that’s a plus in my opinion!
I've seen a couple of horror movies that centered around Halloween and macabre events which occurred at a haunted attraction. I love that setting and of all those stories, this book has been my favorite of all.
Given that I am a Matthew Vaughn fan, I was super excited to read this, and this was the perfect time of year to do so. It has the same unique voice that I've come to expect from the author, although this outing is steeped more in traditional, good 'ole blood-soaked antics, as opposed to some of his earlier works. It's raw and unpolished and leaves a mark. I really enjoyed this even though parts of it left me feeling like my brain had just been bludgeoned with a meat tenderizer. My only complaint would that my stay at the Hotel seemed a bit too brief.
Hellsworld Hotel reads like a you’re watching a horror movie. You know something bad is going to happen and it’s right around the corner. I had no idea just how bad it was going to get. I have read a lot of horror in my day but nothing as hardcore as Hellsworld Hotel. There was a lot of cringing on my part because of the numerous j(awe)-dropping moments. It’s visceral, gritty and never sugar-coated. Step aside Edward Lee and Richard Laymon, Matthew Vaughn is coming through. The hardest of the hard-core writers and he is a jagged cut above the rest. Buy this book, it’s your ticket into Hellsworld Hotel. Can you make it though without chickening out?
Matthew Vaughn forgoes his usual bizarro stylings for a more straight up Horror romp. Akin to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and A House Of A Thousand Corpses, Hellsworld Hotel is a splatterfest written in the vein of Wrath James White or Edward Lee. If you like your Horror with a lot of the icky stuff you’ll like this.
If you're looking for a grind house Rob Zombie-esque story then look no further. Brutal nightmare fuel that'll have you gagging. I definitely saw this as a "movie" in my mind.
Let me preface by saying ....This novella is not for the faint of heart. It is full of Gore, guts, blood and explicit sexual scenes.
Hellsworld Hotel has all the making of an 80’s slasher film. There are plenty of jaw dropping hard core horror scenes. The book was an easy read. I was able to read it cover to cover in one sitting.
I felt the character development in this book was lacking. It almost felt like they were a means to an end. The characters only existence was to be brutally slaughtered in the Haunted Hotel. In my opinion, The plot left much to be desired in a horror novella. It was more of a complication of the sickest things that one human can do to another rather than plot surprises which I look for in horror books.
Hellsworld Hotel is a cheesy horror novel on the spatterpunk genre of horror. If this is what you are looking for then this book is for you. If you are looking for more in the novella, you won’t get it here. This is definitely a fun Halloween read for fans of this hardcore horror.
Great book, loved it! Hellsword Hotel has all the makings of a gory, disturbing rob zombie-ish type horror movie! From start to finish there wasn’t a boring moment! And the detail sometimes had me squirming in my seat! Needless to say I loved this book, only downfall was it didn’t take me long to read it, so now I’m looking forward to reading more of Matthew Vaughn’s books! Just hoping I can get them shipped to Canada!
Did it finally happen. Did I get grossed out...? Well one thing is for sure, this book made ‘The Devil’s Rejects’ look like ‘The little Rascals’.
This was a gory horror novel around the time of Halloween, starring a haunted house attraction that went south from the get go.
For the gory horror fans, this is a must reed. One thing is sure for me, I’m never.. ever... going into a stand alone haunted house attraction in a small town.
Really enjoyed this one. Liked the nasty family running the haunted house, and the sheriff. Enjoyed the blood and guts. Thought the ending was a little abrupt, but the atmosphere through-out was great. There looks like there's more books based around this one so gonna check them out at some point.
