Yūki Tabata (Japanese: 田畠裕基, Hepburn: Tabata Yūki) is a Japanese manga artist.
After working as an assistant to Toshiaki Iwashiro, he created the one-shot Hungry Joker, which was later serialized as a full series. After its conclusion, he launched Black Clover.
Asta and Yuno grew up together, abandoned at the same church. They both determined to become Magic Knights... Yuno's abilities soon grew to genius levels of power and control while Asta didn't show even a spark of magic and made up for it by training hard physically. It became apparent to both when they received their grimores, Yuno a coveted 4-leaf clover and Asta an unheard of black 5-leaf clover, that they were each other's biggest competition when it came to achieving their goals of becoming the next sorcerer emperor.
We come in from a Black Clover vol 17 in the middle of a Clover kingdom takeover...again! This time important knights have fallen to a ritual. Asta and the other magic knights are flat footed by their own comrades. This doesn’t keep them down for long though. Asta isn’t the type to let inequality to keep him from what he believes is right.
This is a really compelling series of battles between Asta, some of his Black Bulls comrades, key Magic Knights as well as some old enemies. There are a couple of neat reveals and a really stressful and painful battle end that I’m on pins and needles to learn what happened. I don’t mind volumes like these because the battles are exciting and aren’t just aimless pissing contests. They matter to the development of the characters.
I was particularly excited to see Asta grow here in a really exciting way! The black clover grimore has more secrets in its pages. There is another character who I and an entire squad were also excited to see show up on the battle field! We have a huge crew of characters at this point in the Black Clover series and it’s exciting to see how Yuki Tabata gives different ones a moment in the spotlight.
Black Clover vol 18 takes us on a wild ride of battles, makes some revelations and leaves us wanting more.
Chess pieces are on the board and it's time to move them. It's still very predictable. But as long as predictable is done right, it can be good. This book consists of multiple one chapter fights and some interludes between them. Again, those where Asta is - it's not good. Shouting and screaming and taking away from the grave situation the whole kingdom should be in. But, when we are dealing with other characters as Yami, it's fucking enjoyable ride!
The first good thing, we see Luck fighting his comrades and damn it's exciting. Unfortunately, they can't win without Asta so it's interrupted. First moment over. We gather the Black Bulls and they use their new comrade Henry and his fuckin robotic house to travel and fight, which is really weird and seems out of place. Then they became friends with bad guys from the previous story arcs, which in course of one chapter is not good but an enemy of my enemy is my friend - so I can live with it.
Second cool moment is Yami against his love interest. It's cool as chapter and fight full of roses and slashes and it's a great match. But unresolved and very quick.
The third great thing was Crimson Lions against their elf opponent. It was obvious that Fuegoleon will wake up and kick ass - but it was great to see it in its glory. Well executed moment.
But moments can't just excuse the weak villains. Some elves possessed bodies of people we know and we are supposed to care? It does not work like that. Another point is that by now we know that there will be minimal reprocutions and most people - if not all will get back to normal and be stronger than before - viz. Luck's example.
Great moments are able to make it good, but I worry that once they are not there the story will fall for me to being just OK.

And he cam back in style, I would expect no less from one of my fave magic knight captains! AND he has the flame spirit! YESSSSS!
That aside, Magna, Asta, and Vanessa saving Luck was so intense yet heartwarming. I nearly cried when I saw small Luck walk away from his mom so he could be with the Black Bulls. On top of that, seeing the gang back together at their hideout, eating and swapping details, was such a small but satisfying scene. I really do love this group of people. But if we could get rid of Gauche, that would be great.
I know I shouldn't find this funny, but I think it's fucking HILARIOUS how most of the elves have been reincarnated into royal bodies, the people they despise the most. And shit, almost ALL the Golden Dawn members are now elves! Seriously though, I don't know if they planned that or not, but I think it's hilarious.
That's all I've got for now, hoping to see my girl Noelle soon! I miss her!
These mangas keep getting better and better. This series holds such a special place in my heart. This edition continues the epic battle between the elves and humans of the Clover kingdom, and all other things that ensue. All characters involved have interesting traits in my opinion, with the elves and their connections an interesting topic. I can’t wait to continue into number 19, and I don’t want this anime/manga series to stop! Overall 5 stars for number 18, and I’m sure it will continue to be this way.
This one was a bit better than the previous two volumes mainly because more interesting characters had more screen time like Yami. I enjoyed the battles more as well especially Yami's fight and the Black Bulls's charge. It was also interesting to learn more about Luck and William's past lives. In general, the fights are interesting but I am not so sure about the plot, it seems very predictable: just go around and fight the people who are possessed by elves and save them. I will continue to read though.
I read Black Clover to see where the shounen genre has gone in the years since I left the main demographic.
The art is great. Asta's anti-magic and physical capability are a very reasonable expression of the "one guy with no power in a world where everyone has a power" trope, especially compared to Deku.
But everything else is all shounen and no heart. Every enemy succumbs to one or two hits from Asta, after which it's usually revealed they're pretty cool dudes who just wanted a friend but were corrupted by evil magic. Every girl blushes in absolute flusteration whenever she's near the guy she likes, who is usually Asta. Except for Mereoleona, who is, rather than Best Girl, Best Woman.
In this volume we had an Edo Tensei-level event which was pretty easily dispatched. It's clear the vertical path the story heads toward, and I'm just not interested anymore. Characters pull new, vertical upgrades to their powers out of thin air for no real reason because they always seem very capable of defeating their enemies anyway. We upgrade only to raise the average power level, none of which means much to Asta because he just negates everything anyway.
I guess it's onto Demon Slayer. From the little I've read, that has a lot more heart.
So many epic fights are going on right now and I'm just hanging on for dear life and enjoying the ride.
Mild spoilers ahead.
I have to say, Black Bulls is a perfect name for that ragtag group; they lock on target, charge in head first, and once they get going, it's hard to stop them. Judging from the ending pages, we're in for an all out magic war.
You know how Luck is Asta's friend? And luck had a whole moment about how he now has friends instead of just a dead mom that makes him sad? Well what if we did the exact same thing, but this time Luck is "evil"? What if we had that same arc with every single character in the series, over and over again? Because that's what this arc looks to be shaping up like. It does mean that the fights actually have some emotional resonance for once, but it's all recycled.
Oh but Rouge the cat is the best. Just look at their tiny little face. An antagonist shoots their ultimate laser blast magic combo magical beam laser kablammy and nothing happens until we zoom in on this tiny red thread kitty cat going meow meow. Adorable. Best character in the series by a wide margin.
This was actually one of the strongest volumes so far in this arc. Possessed Luck vs. Asta, Magna and Vanessa actually made me tear up a bit, mainly because we have never seen Luck cry before this. Not even when he lost his mother. So for him to be so upset over attacking his friends, was some emotional stuff.
The Black Bulls working together with their mech version of their hideout is both hilarious, and very on brand for them.
Also, yes to Fuegoleon waking up, and now having the flame spirit Salamander on his side. This guy has been talking one really long ass nap, and I missed the presence of one of the few nobles who doesn’t really think like one. I am glad he’s back in play.

i’d taken a break from reading manga for a while so jumping back into this was a bit hard, which may have negatively influenced my rating. but this volume was verrrry fight heavy. i don’t mind the fight scenes, don’t get me wrong. and i absolutely love getting povs outside of the usual asta and crew, but there was just so much fighting and so little story progression in this one that i can’t give it more than 3 stars. even so, this was still a great read. loving the story as a whole.
I kick myself every day for sleeping on this series bc of annoying anime bros who luv to hate on it because this is genuinely such a well done fantasy with such good wholesome vibes and such fantastic magic GAWD
also listening to epic yuki hayashi and hiroyuki sawano orchestral tracks while reading is making this such a rich sensory experience I’m leitakdkskfsmrkskdn I love this shit sm….
I know I may sound harsh, but I found this volume to be a slight step down from the previous. Not anywhere near enough to be less than 3 stars, but just a little less satisfying. Yuki Tabata delivers another fine piece into the huge puzzle which is Black Clover. The action stays steady and 140-141…..WOW!!! This volume read really quick because of the action sequences and was another solid entry. It is easy to see why my oldest daughter is loving this series and just started watching the anime.
