Archaeologist Dr. Lou Fitzgerald is used to unexpected happenings, and they don't usually faze her. After surviving a childhood disability, and dealing with an unfair boss, Lou has learned the art of rolling with the punches. But when she arrives at Dark Lake, what was supposed to be a simple archaeological dig is beyond even her wildest imaginations. Landowner Evan Close has his own reasons for keeping the secrets of Dark Lake, and this attractive interloper is a menace. Her precious dig threatens to bring his house of cards tumbling down around him, and he feels helpless to stop it. It soon becomes apparent there are dark forces at work, and Lou's simple assignment turns into a mystery. Solving that mystery comes with a steep price.
Clare is a British Christian author. She lives in a small town just outside Reading, England with her husband, whom she married in 1992, their two of their three grown up children, unfriendly mini-panther, aka Tilly the cat and new addition Ty the dog. Clare is half English and half Welsh, which makes watching rugby interesting at times as it doesn’t matter who wins. Writing from an early childhood and encouraged by her teachers, she graduated from rewriting fairy stories through fan fiction to using her own original characters and enjoys writing an eclectic mix of romance, crime fiction and children's stories. When she's not writing, she can be found reading, crocheting or doing the many piles of laundry the occupants of her house manage to make. Her books are based in the UK, with a couple of exceptions, thus, although the spelling may be American in some of them, the books contain British language and terminology and the more recent ones are written in UK English. The first draft of every novel is hand written. She has been a Christian for more than half her life. She goes to Carey Baptist where she is one of four registrars. What a suspenseful ride! I’m always impressed with this author’s books. Each time I read one, it becomes my favorite Revell read. But Dark Lake definitely gets the prize for her suspense story lines. It’s extremely well-written, and the amount of research that went into it had to be daunting. But the author pulled it off with incredible results. If you love Christian suspense that keeps you turning pages late into the night…strong heroines who take no slights, dirty digs or put-downs without a fight…heroes to sigh for…settings, occupations, and events that grip your imagination and take it in every which direction—then grab a copy of this book and get ready for some time on the edge of your seat. Kudos to the author!
In the interest of full disclosure, I have to admit to the following: In general I don't go running for suspense novels. I'm a contemporary Christian romance girl -- but when I find an author as talented as Clare Revell who so deftly combines both suspense and romance (with faith connecting it all!) - I'm hooked. In Dark Lake a mysterious archeological dig becomes a matter of life and death as well as a chance for flawed but loving and lovable characters to show their true character and grow - which is a delightful journey to me as a reader. Five out of five, and thanks to the author for yet another great read!
This book's plot looked very promising and the secret story of the village is indeed interesting. I enjoyed the parts that dealt with the mystery. However the romance is so antiquated I went and checked the publication date expecting it to be around 1980. I'm all for a clean romance without unnecessary details about their sex life, but it was just so weird and unrealistic. The villain is another problem. His motivation makes no sense at all. He's the one creating all his problems with our heroin and his reactions are disproportionate, borderline ridiculous even, and weirdly without legal repercussions.
Dark Lake has many eerie layers in name and back story. While Dr. Louise Fitgerald is a renowned archaeologist, she is also strangely vulnerable to the bizarre whimsies of the power-drunk director of the private organization she works for. He constantly pulls the rug out from under her and threatens her and yanks the privileges of name recognition that goes along with her discoveries. He pays well, but seriously, why is she working for this dangerous jerk? Could it be that her self-confidence is in shambles due to the disfigurement she deals with, yet tries to keep quiet?
“Rolling with the punches” has come to the last straw for Dr. Lou as she is shifted from a different archeological site and job just as she proved a long-held and worked-for premise on an important dig to a relatively recent site submerged when a dam was built a century earlier. She’s to dive and check over the remains of the village. But it’s not just the creepy fog that’s all wrong in Dark Lake. The property owner, the mysterious Evan Close who employs a body guard, has enigmas Dr. Lou longs to explore. The two hit it off right away and sparks fly as they’re drawn together through a mutual need to survive the secrets of Dark Lake.
Told through alternating points of view, the suspense builds wonderfully. The mutual tension works well, though I did have a giggle at Colonel Dad reprimanding two thirty-somethings to stay pure until marriage or he’d hand out knuckle sandwiches. Faith-based romance is nice and clean yet real without being preachy and spinsterish.
What really happened to the town under the lake? I've always loved history and archaeology, so a suspense novel in which the heroine is an archaeologist is right up my alley. But then throw in some romance, and I couldn't put the book down. The author does a masterful job of weaving together a tale of suspense and romance. I loved the way she uses a historic diary to reveal the mystery of the town under the lake. This is the first of Clare Revell's full-length novels I've read, but it won't be the last. I recommend this book.
It so wonderful.to find British mysteries with a Christian characters. Glad I was told about her books. This was another suspenseful story with an archaeologist, Lou, being sent to investigate a church underwater but slowly as the waters recede the church tells a history hidden for years. Really enjoyed this book as well others I've read of hers. Will be reading more.
Lou is a strong heroine who knows how to stick up for herself but also allows special people to see her weakened. She is an amputee who lost her leg from a shark bite. The back story behind the events seemed far-fetched, but it is fiction. The suspense and pace of the novel kept moving quickly, which was very nice. Overall, the plot about buried secrets, archeology, and a dam in a small village are not anything I've read before. This made me enjoy the novel even more.
Nail-Biting Suspense and Sweet Romance In One Book
I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns in this story! Watching the history of the village and it’s people unfold kept me on the edge of my seat, and the blossoming romance added a sweet element. I would definitely recommend this book!
Audible:This was a very good book! Louisa is an archeologist who works for a man that takes her for granted,at the very least. After being kicked off her find of a lifetime, she goes where he sends her.Dark Lake has a long history, she just has to uncover it. Hannibal Hills was a wonderful narrator. I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
This was a great story! The plot was multi-layered and full of suspense while the characters were dynamic and very believable. It was an enjoyable ride through this tale! Highly recommend!
