In 1891, in the badlands of northern Arizona, Jed Cartwright, a bounty hunter and US Marshal, transports a dangerous prisoner back to the town of Smith Junction. As they travel through the woods, they are attacked by what they believe are skinwalkers.
As Jed flees the woods, he finds a house where a family has been slaughtered. The only survivor is an eight-year-old Navajo boy, a boy traumatized by the horrors he has seen.
As Jed and the Navajo boy make their way north to Smith Junction, a sudden sandstorm diverts them to the small town of Hope's End. They take refuge from the storm in the saloon with some of the townspeople. But hours later, when the storm is over, they discover what has happened to the rest of the people in Hope's End...and the terror is only beginning, everything leading up to a shocking twist at the end.
Back again with the Ancient Enemy. This time we move primarily in 1891 and hear the story of Jed Cartwright, a brave US Marshal (the story is a great western combined with outstanding horror elements). He tries to catch Red Moon and bring him back to justice but things turn out different. Followed by the Yenaldooshi (another name for the Ancient Enemy) he and a group of people are stranded in a saloon of Hope's End (what a name for a dying town) for a final stand-off with the evil entity. David is among them. Can he protect them against the evil? At the end we are back in the here and now. It's 2018 and David, 7 years after the events in Colorado, had a dream about the going-ons in Hope's End. We also hear about Stella and Cole who live under a new identity in Costa Rica. David hears about a terrible massacre in a village close to them. Is their ancient enemy back? Nailbiting third part of this superb story. You simply can't put those books down. It's one of the greatest series I ever read (historical mystery combined with ancient evil). This book here is no exception. Highly recommended!
I was strongly reminded of the battle with evil in the novel IT because of the similar historical repeated appearance of the evil in this novel called the Ancient Enemy. Good has to constantly battle evil, a never-ending battle. The boy David is the possessor of the power to conquer evil, we learn in the final pages that his spirit has appeared in the from of a child as many times as the Ancient Enemy who always tries to get him killed. Each time there is a confrontation, David grows in power until he can continue to stay here on Earth, which means that he can grow to develop in his full potential. This novel gives us, the background story behind the town of Hope Springs, including why the silver locket contains David's hair and why David has dreams of the past. Great read, looking forward to the ending novel.
This isn't the strongest book in the series but it takes us back to a time before our story began. There is some really nasty stuff in here and some really good character development. From time to time there were elements that reminded me of another book that I read decades ago, "Phantoms" by Dean Koontz. In that book, there is a creature that is known as "The Ancient Enemy" and it is the cause of many mass disappearances throughout history. I don't think that this is by mistake, but a shared concept perhaps? There is nothing about either of the Ancient Enemies that are similar. But there it is just the same.
This book is but another part of a much larger plan that we can't see the entire scope of from our perspective. The end is in sight and I can't wait to get there.
Meet the David that lived in 1891 when the Ancient Enemy last visited. A young Indian boy, David, has his family slaughtered shortly before a sheriff who has had his own run-in with the Ancient Enemy.
When a sudden sandstorm arises, the two are forced to seek shelter in the town of Hope’s End, the same town, a ghost town in modern day David’s time, where David made his stand/ Is the history of these characters linked?
There are few books of from this resource I rated 5 stars. This is another. The writing is easy to read and comprehend and the descriptions are very vivid. The characters are so believable I almost feel I know them. The storyline has inspired my research into the Anasazi where I’ve appreciated the author’s commitment to authenticity. Very good read and I look forward to reading the next Ancient Enemy .
This is really a prequel that can be read as a stand alone book, although I highly recommend reading the first two. At first I was a little leary that this book wouldn't connect to the first two because of a hundred year span between them. As usual, Mark Likens worked his magic and everything fell into place! Can't wait to re-read parts one and two again!
Mark Lukens “Ancient Enemy: Hope’s End,” is the 3rd book in the series. It is a compelling story, full of suspense, the supernatural, and tells how a group of strangers band together to fight a common enemy. Lukens weaves the story together expertly. A must read.
This is truly a head scratcher and compelling moment to check the corners of your room. The ending leaves you with this isn't over until it's over..scary but believable, yes, yes..the wind shaken windows..is that someone on my door?? Makes she wonder about those unsolved murders and never found missing person...strange??I don't think so...do YOU??
Quite gory, even more so than the first book. It's similar to book one, like the movie Alien is to Alien3, same basic story but a different setting. But I don't mean that as a bad thing. Like both the first and second books, this book is a very hard to put down read. (The version that I read was from the box set.)
Super creepy, but I loved it. It is not for the faint of heart, it is horror with a capital H. But these books are so good. Can't wait for the final and last book. Great job Mark Lukens, thank you. xxx
While these three books can be read as stand alone I highly recommend reading them in the order written! Absolutely fantastic! Was totally unable to put them down! Can't wait for the final book to be available! You will enjoy these books!!
I read all three current books in the series in a matter of a week. I took every possible spare moment I had to read it. You will be thrilled, creeped out, humored and saddened. Plus many more emotions. I can't wait for the final installment!
Good content, I liked the storyline progression and telling the backstory story in book 3. I look forward to seeing the characters and what happens in the final showdown. Thanks for the GoodRead.
I loved the time jump. I started reading this book last night and had to stop because it scared me so much. I ended up finishing it this morning. Can’t wait to read Ancient Enemy 4!
I can't love this any more. I appreciate the telling of the present and then the past and how it ties together. I care about the characters and can't wait to see how it ends.
I was surprised to find this book. I had read the ancient enemy series a few years ago and didn’t know this was out. It’s a very good series, I would recommend reading them all.
You can wait your whole life for a artist like Mark Lukens to come along or you can go straight to the source and read a series that will have you turning the pages so fast you’ll burn your fingertips. All of his writing is top notch, you won’t be disappointed.
Not as good as the first two books but still really good. I love the characters. I liked how he tied in the original characters at the end. I hope for more of the same in the next and final chapter!
Good story. Hooks you right away and stays interesting till the end. First story I've read from this author; looking forward to reading more of his books.
