How to Choose a Guy in 10 Days

Alternate cover edition of ASIN B07FTXJ6LN

Stylist Gemma Jones is competing for a once-in-a-lifetime promotion. All she has to do is take some fashion-backward guy from geek to GQ-worthy. The only problem? The man in question is her hairy manwhore of a next-door neighbor. AKA Bigfoot.

Zach Morrison has zero interest in being Gemma’s makeover mannequin. Sure, it’s fun getting his smart-mouthed neighbor all riled up, but after cashing out of his tech start-up and going through an ugly break-up, he’s taking a permanent vacation. If he wants to wear sweatpants and sleep on a mattress in the corner of an empty apartment—

OK. Maybe he needs a little push in the right direction. But as Gemma races the clock to win her bet, she finds that Bigfoot’s been hiding a few things under his baggy flannel shirts. Like abs of steel, and a surprisingly big...

Heart. He has a big heart.

Soon, sparks are flying between this unlikely couple, but can Zach embrace a fresh start - however manscaped it might be? And will Gemma beat out her Instabitch rival for the top spot - and keep the truth about their bet from Zach?

3.5 Changing From The Inside Out Stars
* * * 1/2 Spoiler Free-Woot Woot, It's FREE!!!!
I have read a couple of books by Lila Monroe and I must say, she has a very engaging style. It is so easy to pick up one of her books and dive right in. She will connect with her reader from the start.

How to Choose a Guy in 10 Days is the first of her newest series, the Chick Flick Club. With this series, she introduces us to a group of people who are devoted to each other. Our gal has her own posse of women, each determined to be accomplished in their own careers.

We meet Gemma Jones
who is a stylist with a company that is geared to go into an overdrive expansion with new investors' money. An opportunity for promotion comes Gemma's way and she jumps at it. Unfortunately, there is another contender and it becomes, game on.

The problem is how these two co-workers are pushed to do a personal bet as to how the winner will win. After a heated discussion between the women and independent friend, it is decided each woman chooses a dreadful example of the style for the other... and then the lifestyle makeover will happen in 10 days.

Zach Morrison thinks he is living the life...He worked like a dog, putting in endless hours with his partner on an app...making it through all the times' people said it wouldn't work. Making through set back after set back... and even overcoming a relationship where he thought it was his safe place, only to be told, he wasn't enough. After all of that... these guys hit pay dirt and sold their company for an obscene amount of money.

So, yes, Zach is living the life...answering to no one, eating when and what he wants, doing any number of agreeable women and not having a care in the world...It should be perfection...But his crew of friends is after him to get a grip. Clean up his act and fumigate his apartment. He even is looking like a mountain man with a scraggly beard and grungy clothes.

Now, these two opposites happen to be neighbors and Zach's loud music, a revolving door of women and Hairy Big Footways irk Gemma beyond belief. After a couple of confrontations, neither are each other's fans.

But leave it to kismet because just when all of this bet/promotion stuff is happening, Zach is at Gemma's office helping the tech department with a glitch. Gemma's competition takes one look at Zach in all his Big Foot hairy glory and deems him Gemma's victim, I mean, client.

From the start, you know both of these two are going to connect in all the right ways... and it is the getting there which is all the fun. Assumptions are dispelled and insights are revealed as to the depth of each person. We have all of the "Pretty Woman" moments and in the end, we get the romance we crave. I can honestly say these two have lovely chemistry and when it clicks, it feels authentic.

Monroe provides a solid foundation for her series with all of her secondary characters. We get a taste of personalities and goals for each of them. The next book, You've Got Male, will focus on Zoey and it looks to be a blast.

This book had a lot of potential. I liked the concept of retelling well-known rom coms. Good premise, terrible execution (including some tasteless jokes about poly relationships that weren’t necessary). This is THE MOST POORLY EDITED BOOK I HAVE EVER READ. Actually that’s a misnomer because it implies this book had an editor. Clearly it didn’t! Grammatical errors, typos, formatting errors. This book doesn’t even look like it was run through a basic spellcheck. I’m talking errors on every other page or sometimes multiple ones on the same page. I felt like I was reading a first draft. Sure, $3.99 isn’t a ton of money, but it makes me FURIOUS that an author expects readers to pay for such a poor quality product. Yes, editing services can be expensive, and there are different kinds of editing, but they’re necessary FOR A REASON. Did the author even read through this herself? I’m so mad. So. mad. I will be publishing a similar review on Amazon in the hopes that prospective readers are prepared to get total garbage for $3.99 :)

HYYA HUMAN-BEINGS! I READ A REALLY GOOD ONE!

Books like this need to be praised and passed on to you, my fellow readers!! Books like this are the REASON WHY.
I should be studying for my history and politics exam and practice for my job interview - but here I am, trying to convince you guys. PLEASE READ IT!
I want everyone to read this one. It's more than worth it.

1) Why should anyone care/read?

Because: I loved every single bit of it and If I say something about books - It only can be the truth. 😇 No honestly, if you want to read a heart-warming love story with the perfect amount of humor and hot (nerdy) male -> Then this book is the one for you! I really want everyone to feel that glimpse of happiness like I did yesterday after reading this one.

TBH, when Eden's and Zach's story was previewed in Lila Monroe's last book (Man Candy), I wasn't sure about it. But after reading the first few pages - I was hooked. It's definitely a page-turner. I read it through in one sitting. I devoured and finished at 2 am. I do not regret anything, even though I ended up having a red eye.

2) What makes this book different from all the others?
This book is the perfect combination of everything, what a heart desires.
It's like the last piece of meat - and I am no vegetarian.

I’m not going to resume this whole boom for you (that’s why we have blurbs) and also because... you have to experience this book for yourself. BUT HERE:

Facts about this book:

- full of humor,
- a little bit of anxiety
- has a long foreplay (and we do like long things)
- has "ugly duck" gets pretty but reversed
- a lotta red-hot sex scenes... (and I mean the kind, where your body lits up and you're ravenous... but then you realize, that you're single af and probs. will end up with 12 dogs)
- a rival
- has a little secret
-
- is great, because it thematizes self-confidence
- is LOVE (it's at the moment the love of my life)
- has a lotta BIGFOOT references
- is amazing, because Zach Morrison (HE is hawt as hell...) (I am Icarus. Seriously, I wouldn't mind being burned by him.)
- has a bet ( deep inside of your perverted heart... you know you love cliché - DENIAL DOES NOT WORK)
- has a very lovable female lead
- the entertainment does not stop.
- dumb ex's (une salope (c'est francais)
- a gamer (if you're not into that... it's not what it seems... ;-)
- some "oh my" scenes
- a boy who seems like an asshole - but definitely isn't
- a girl who seems shallow - but isn’t

Fasten your seat belt and face your commitment phobia... because you will fall in love:
- with this story
- the characters
- their life
- their humor
- the apartments they live in
- their hairy/non-hairy feets
- you will love everything
- YOUR OVARIES EXPLODING

After reading books like this... I always feel sad, because such amazing people do not exist in real life. Well, there's me ... but you know the rest xD (Okay, I'll stop)

MY REVIEW: 5 out of 5! (that's how many times I changed my underwear while reading this) UPPPS, TMI - again

Gemma lives in an apartment block like thousands of other people in her city. The worst part about living in an apartment is the close proximity of neighbours. The one across the hall from her is the perfect example of an annoying neighbour. He doesn’t seem to have a job, has a constant parade of women through his door, plays loud music and looks like he has no interest in personal hygiene. Gemma calls him ‘Bigfoot’ due to his excessive facial and body hair.

When a promotion at work is dangled in front of her, she is determined to prove that she is up for the task. She needs to find a willing male subject to makeover. Not just in looks but his wardrobe and home too. A life makeover if you will. Zach aka Bigfoot is the perfect choice, now she just needs to convince him…

Zach is surprised to see his neighbour at his door, well surprised that she is not there to yell at him about his loud music. Gemma has a makeover proposition for him, to completely overhall his look and life. This earns her a slammed door in the face.

After some careful reconsideration, Zach finally agrees to letting Gemma work her magic. He has been stuck in a bit of a rut after a failed relationship and this is just the motivation he has needed to rediscover himself. Plus, Gemma is kind of cute, why hadn’t he noticed that before?

Gemma is thrilled to get her hands on Zach, er I mean work with Zach and is surprised that she has never realised just how handsome he is, he really does scrub up well. This leads to a ridiculous amount of attraction towards him and when it is reciprocated she really enjoys mixing business with pleasure.

Zach knows he is doing this makeover thing for Gemma’s job but has no idea that a promotion hinges on it. Gemma is freaking out about how will he feel when he realises that he is part of a bet because now that there are feelings involved the bet feels like second prize now that she has Zach. The longer she keeps it secret, the bigger the mess…

This author never disappoints me with her fabulous rom-com stories. This is the first in her new series, Chick Flick Club.

ARC kindly received in exchange for an honest review.

I knew going into this that it would be a fun book. Couple the name with the author and it was bound to be. I was not disappointed. I really enjoyed this one and sped through it quit quickly.

Gemma and Zach are both likeable characters, and I really liked getting into the depth of each of their personalities, particularly Zach's. Its the kind of book that goes to show (in some ways) not to judge a book/person by its cover, as the saying goes.

The who idea of the storyline is great in this one, and all the secondary characters were lots of fun as well.

I don't want to go into things too much, because I don't want to spoil anything, but I did love this one, and I do recommend.

"Like she feels my gaze, she glances over and smiles. Not one of her careful, suspicious smiles she gives me when I'm teasing her or when she's yanking my chain.
No. This is a real smile. An open smile, filled with joy. One that tells me so much about her - about a different side of her that I never imagined existed. A side that it turns out I like. Very much."

I had a hard time with this book. My main issue: Zach, the hero.
He was a jerk for allmost all the book.
Let me point out what was wrong with him:
- He was rude to the heroine, Gemma ( since they are neighbors she complained to him for loud music while he was hooking up with a random woman and not only ignored her complains but still kept the music loud on purpose).
- He flirted and checked out other women ( he even took a phone number from another woman...how nice...)
- He goes camping with the heroine. When they arrive at the camping site lodge he sees his ex wife and what does he do ? He literally runs away...hadn’t Gemma caught up with him on the way to his car he would have left, leaving her alone at the camping site with no ways to return to the city...how charming
- Gemma convinces him to stay at the camping site; they discuss sleeping arrangements since they are sharing the same cabin but they are still not together at this point...so what does he propose ? The heroine should sleep on the couch while he could take the big bed...how chivalrous isn’t he ?
- He showed no interest whatsoever in Gemma for at least half the book
- Let’s get to breaking point of the book...you know the drama part where the couple splits apart for a couple of chapters...in this case the hero finds out about a bet Gemma took at the beginning of the book with one of her coworkers. I am not entering into many details here but he gets upset because he believes Gemma thought he was a loser at the beginning...uhmmm hello ?? Your house looked like a dumpster not even a college student would live in, you looked like a hairy beast because you refused to shave and basically to take care of yourself enough to entertain normal social relationships, you didn’t care if you went out with flip flops or normal shoes and what you put on, you took women home every night and you didn’t even remember their names the morning after...and you get upset if she thinks you are a looser ??? That’s because you are you selfish jerk !!! The heroine should have left him wallowing in his self pity and just forget he existed.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is one of my favorite romantic comedies, so I saw the synopsis of this book and thought it would be fun. I was not disappointed.

Gemma is a stylist and is up for a big promotion at her job - if she can do a makeover on a guy. She and her co-worker make a bet to see who can do the best makeover and win the promotion, and Gemma gets to pick her co-worker, Arielle's man, and Arielle gets to pick Gemma's - and she picks her hairy, bigfooted neighbor, Zach.

Gemma has the impression that Zach is unemployed - which is true, but not the whole story.  It turns out that Zach is coming off a bad relationship and is somewhat jaded when it comes to love.  At first, he is reluctant to get a make over, but he soon realizes he's been in limbo for a while, so agrees to it, and the change is quick and amazing.

I'm going to put it out there - I HATED Arielle. She was a really awful character.

So I'm sure you can assume that some drama happened when Zach found out about the bet.   But it resolved nicely and quickly.

While the next two books are about Gemma's two friends, I hope we will continue to see Zach's friends Martin, Julie and Brody. I loved his friends so much, especially Julie and Martin.

If I had one complaint, it would be that I didn't love the ending.  There was no epilogue and I felt the book had no closure. We got a sneak peek at Zoey's book, so maybe we'll get some closure for Zach and Gemma in that book.

I did enjoy this book. There were some laugh out loud moments and I liked the characters. I would recommend this book.

Every single time I start reading a Lila Monroe book, I know I’m going to not only enjoy it, but think about it well after I’ve finished.

Every. Single. Time.

And her latest romcom, How to Choose a Guy in 10 Days, showcases the exact reasons as to why I love her books!

Fun, flirty, with the perfect amount of humor and sexual tension, this book’s enticing storyline and unforgettable characters make it not only entertaining but heartwarmingly romantic!

After the very brief glimpse of HTCAGITD we get at the end of Man Candy, I couldn’t WAIT to read it! Gemma and Zach’s quirky and antagonistic neighborly “relationship” was just downright delightful. Their combative banter and seemingly polar opposite lifestyles infuse the story with wit and playfulness. The energetic connection between them sparks off the pages, eliciting a powerful intrigue and intimacy that thoroughly engages the reader from start to finish. And the transformation their relationship takes from enemies to friends to lovers was entirely smooth and seamless, matching the progression of the storyline flawlessly.

This fresh and lively new Chick Flick Club Series is one I’m super excited to continue reading! If the next books in the series are even remotely as fantastic as How to Choose a Guy in 10 Days, then I know I’m in for an entertaining and laugh-out-loud treat. If you’re new to Lila Monroe’s books, then there’s never been a better time to start reading than NOW!

A definite 5 star must read that does not disappoint!

I don't know what I was expecting. I have seen the movie with a similar plot and I liked it. This book not so much. It was slow and because I already knew where it was headed I didn't quite enjoy it. So this is solidly in the "it's me not the book" category.

Oh sweet baby Jesus, this book was what just what I needed to read. It’s fun, adorable with a boat load of sexy!

ARC Received in exchange for an honest review

Gemma, oh this girl melted my heart. She’s so beautiful, kind hearted and strives to help those who need a little extra push to feel confidant in themselves again. Not only is it her job to do so but she goes above and beyond for them, she listens and works with what they want. She’s a bright and amazing woman and gah, I love her so hard!

Zach, oh man, this guy...when it’s revealed what he went through my heart totally broke for him. He’s loving, handsome and so caring. Going through what he did sheltered him from living the life he should and when he finally sees that my heart quickly mended. That guy deserves all the good things in life and then some.

Seeing these two and their interactions was down right freaking beautiful. The humour they both share and their banter made my sides hurting from laughing, I absolutely adored these two so damn much.

Being a lover of the film How To Loose a Guy in 10 days, I just KNEW I had to read this and boy, it was so much more than what I hoped for in the beginning. My expectations were quickly smashed at the very start of this book because this author just slayed this whole damn thing, just wow.

This is my first read from this author and certainly won’t be my last. It’s been an absolute honour being able to read this beauty and now I just want more.

Ok. Quick review of my thoughts on this book!

‘Retelling’ the Film
There is definitely something reassuring about a rom-com, even when it doesn’t quite hit right for you. Tropes and storylines can be predictable, and characters can be surface-level reflections of ourselves and our experiences, but that’s okay! Sometimes reading is about easy enjoyment, comfort, and an escape into a world where rules of life are more clear cut, and emotions can be placed back on the shelf neatly once they’re done.

Conversely, sometimes a rom-com can not quite give me enough – I’m left feeling uncaptured, unconvinced. How to Choose a Guy in 10 Days drew me in with its obvious homage to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, which I love as a rom-com. What works for me in that movie is – yes, it revolves around a deception/miscommunication plot, which can often feel cheap – but it is played in a way where the deception comes from both romantic leads, rather than one.

This does a lot to make the final reunion and resolution feel more balanced. No one is right, everyone is a little shitty, but ‘all is fair in love and war’. The ‘com’ part in ‘rom-com’ also does a lot of the heavy lifting, shifting our perspective from seeing everything as charming – the spiralling ridiculousness more like a harmless ball of snow rolling down a hill and getting larger, rather than an out of control truck on the freeway.

Overall, I felt like this book didn’t really have any business linking itself to the film. The only true similarity I see is there being a promotion-motivated bet, but there is none of the web weaving of motivations and intentions that the film balances so well. This results in the book feeling a lot emptier than the film, making the book feel less satisfying to me by comparison. If the book didn’t link itself to the film with its title the way it does, I wouldn’t be directly comparing. However, I feel that the criticism of a shallow set-up and conflict would be valid regardless.

The Plot
The miscommunication plot in this book felt like the plot of a TV episode. The conflict didn’t feel like enough to carry the story for me. By conflict, I mean anything that moves the plot, or creates interesting situations or feelings in the characters, as opposed to ‘characters having fun’. Gemma’s bet with her rival coworker to make over her slobby roommate nicknamed ‘Bigfoot’ isn’t a bad plot per se, but when it is fully transparent to him that she is making him over for her work portfolio, I have to admit, I struggled to emotionally invest much into the reveal to Bigfoot that she was doing so in order to fight for a work promotion.

It’s because of this rather fragile betrayal that the conflict is resolved quite quickly, with everything done and dusted within what feels like less than a chapter. There is a strange moment when but unless I missed it, this moment was just never mentioned again.

In general, I feel like this book suffered from a too-quick resolution, and was able to wrap everything up in a bow and be done with it in a way that I found unsatisfying, and rushed.

The Characters
A personal pet peeve of mine is when books are from the perspective of the main character for a majority of the book, but shift for a few chapters to the romantic lead in order to explain why he is how he is, what he’s experiencing, or essentially demystify anything we would be excited to learn about him from the perspective of the main character.

Instead of allowing the character development to unfold naturally, having that feeling of wanting to know more about the romantic interest, wanting to keep reading, and seeing the characters learn more about each other organically, we are given full context to Zach’s life, why he’s messy, why the ‘bet’ will affect his insecurities, how he feels about Gemma. It felt as if the story didn’t trust us to wait and find out that there’s more to him than being unkempt and messy, it had to let us know as soon as possible that, ‘Don’t worry, he’s not all bad!!!’

Gemma worked as a protagonist: she is driven, not passive in the plot, likeable and bold, never backing down from a question or a fight. There is something to be said about how female characters have to be likeable in this particular way, however. They are always bold but not pushy, driven but never cutthroat, bubbly but not annoying. She works as a protagonist, but I can’t say that I felt drawn into her, or lost in her experiences. Some might say that that isn’t the point of a romance novel, that they’re about easy enjoyment – I can agree, but for me personally, I’m always going to want something to hang onto and think about with a character.

Overall
While a miscommunication plot isn’t necessarily my thing, I can still appreciate its potential for character intrigue, conflict, and the idea that people aren’t perfect, and you can be both flawed and desired. This book didn’t utilize this plot device to its fullest, in my opinion, and overall felt like it played things safe – both with the plot and the characters. There were quite a few sex scenes, but they were so brief and undescriptive that I’m left with the impression that a man puts it in, jackhammers a few times, and then there’s a fountain of simultaneous orgasms. Sex scenes certainly aren’t the most important thing to me by far, but if they’re in a book, I do kinda hope for them to be good……!

I still had fun with this book, and there is charm in the characters and the carefree nature of friendship that it depicts, so I definitely would praise it for that!

Ok. That's it from me!

Not quiet a one star but not two either.
A lot doesn’t make sense in this book:
Wallowing for a whole year over an ex is a red flag?
Also beards are hot, I don’t know why the author didn’t get the memo.
And I hate it when couples get back together after their major fight without anything happening. Like huh? What changed your mind? Passage of time?

This is my first book by this author and it was a fun introduction to her work. It was an easy to read book with likable characters and a story that flowed.

Gemma and Zach are neighbours and not the friendly kind. They make assumptions about each other but you know what they say about love and hate. There is fun banter between them and also Gemma and her girl possy and no denying the attraction between the main characters.

As I said this is my first book by this author but it won't be my last.

You can always count on Lila Monroe for super-fun romantic comedies. The first book in her newest series, The Chick Flick Club, is sweet, fun, sexy and always romantic.

Gemma and Zach have a contentious relationship. While being neighbors, they aren’t exactly friendly. Until Gemma needs a favor for a work project that only Zach can assist with. From the moment Gemma requests Zach’s help, sparks started flying off my kindle. These two are so funny. I can’t get enough of smart characters with witty comebacks. They’re dynamic and unique, and their personalities shine. Once Zach’s true character starts unraveling, he’s totally swoon worthy. Like a real gentleman I’d like to keep for myself.

This book is so much fun, it’s the perfect beach read. How To Choose a Guy in 10 Days is a lighthearted, feel good, delicious rom com. If you haven’t read Lila Monroe before, here’s the perfect place to start.

Of all the contemporary rom-coms I've been reading lately, this is by far my favorite. Competing for a promotion, stylist Gemma has 10 days to make-over her neighbor, Zach, aka Bigfoot, but as she starts to fall for him, she worries about what he will think of the bet.

I loved pretty much everything about this book. The story is light, fluffy, and sexy, and the writing is so readable and fun. I never wanted to put it down. Gemma and Zach had so much chemistry, and they also had a surprising amount of depth. Monroe crafted well-developed characters (Gemma volunteers at a charity helping women get back into the workforce, and Zach is recovering from a failed marriage) while still keeping the tone of the book light. Nothing ever felt forced. I loved watching Gemma and Zach get to know each other beyond their first impressions and how they both grow by the end of the story. 4.5 stars

blud sees a beard on a man for the first time in her life, and immediately calls him a hairy beast and bigfoot.

why did i read this book so fast? i dont know - it was a short read that was SO dumb, was entertaining.

gemma: *makes a bet on zach to change him*
zach: i hate people thinking i need to change - they remind me of my ex. why can’t people like me for me.
gemma: will zach be mad for making this bet with the goal of changing him, and then keeping it a secret? nah def not.

A FR CONVERSATION BETWEEN GEMMA AND HER FRIEND. also zach was soooo dramatic. you’re mad and your first reaction is to go axe crazy on blocks of wood?!

also, none of these conversations sounded remotely realistic. i hate this word, but genuinely, the dialogue (and the outfits!) were cheugy 🥴

such an insta-love story. i can only blame myself for finishing it.
