Hot soldier + brilliant doctor = a thrilling romance in the desert heat.
Stand-alone second book in the series begun by Undercover Siren
Doctor Mae Jones had no idea when she agreed to assist the army in vaccinating children half-way around the world what she'd face. She didn't sign up for a sexy British officer trailing her every move, his giddy smile and sunshine good-looks distracting her. Nor did she expect the sudden rebel attacks and bullets flying while she attempts to try to cure an unexplainable virus about to threaten the whole world. It's up to her to try and stop a war before it even begins while she keeps falling for this man who's her total opposite in every way but the heart.
In the second entry of the Inquisition series, this stand-alone novel presents Alistair Young. For those tired of the alpha who want someone sweet as cotton candy, Alistair is your man. Easy on the eyes, and light on the heart -- he's prone to cracking jokes and playing card games with the sick kids. For all his easy-going ways he knows how dangerous growing close to the new genius doctor can be, but he can't look away either.
Ellen Mint adores the adorkable heroes who charm with their shy smiles and heroines that pack a punch. She recently won the Top Ten Handmaid's Challenge on Wattpad where hers was chosen by Margaret Atwood. Her books, Undercover Siren and Fever are available at Amazon as well as a short story in the Lucky Between The Sheets anthology. Married, she lives in Nebraska with her dog named after Granny Weatherwax. Her hobbies include gaming, painting, and halloween prop making. The basement is full of skeletons because they ran out of room in the closets.
It took me a long while to get into this book as it was very slow in parts and I felt like I wanted to skip parts.
The title Fever does suggest passion which for Doctor Mae Jones and Captain Alistair Young there was lots of it, however, sadly some of the plot left me very confused.
A very suitable book if you like military romances but not all the concepts were clearly defined, a section in the middle of the book made my head spin trying to work out exactly where the story was going and who some of the characters were. The language used was clear and easy to read. The defining of the bigger picture was a little muddled.
I very much liked the characters description of Doctor Mae, a strong knowledgeable woman. Captain Alistair was from a tough upbringing was a good soldier and kind-hearted. I also liked the soldier Barry who was a good friend.
Like I said, it was a slow read in places but it all came good in the end. Some of the action was not quite so plausible, but that may just be me and other readers may feel differently and love it.
I would recommend this book if you like action packed stories with spies, rebels and a good old fashioned romance.
This story takes place in Ivostan, a run down, dangerous city that threw brilliant, and young, Dr. Mae Jones for a big loop. She thought she was signing up to help people while seeing new places, so when she gets there, she's none too happy. And it only gets worse when her babysitter is the super sexy Scotsmen, Alistair, and she's really not too nice to him. Alistair can't figure out why Doc Jones hates him, so he tends to make himself look silly, as he's really attracted to her. On top of all of that, there's some kind of deadly virus killing people right & left, so between their attraction, there's a mystery to solve as well, while trying to stay alive. Obviously, that mystery provided the twists that came from every direction, leaving me on the edge of my seat trying to figure it all out. Then there's Alistair's original brand of humor throughout that did have me laughing quite a bit. However, it did take me a bit to really get transported into the story, because for whatever reason, I was just a bit confused for a cool minute. Once I got past that hump, I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough. So now, the talented Ellen Mint is on my radar, so I will be reading more of her work! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Mae wasn’t sure what she expected when she signed up to be a doctor on a temporary assignment in Ivostan. It was supposed to be a summer in a foreign country, a fun time to see new places while helping people out. What she got was a deployment in a run down, poverty stricken city that is much more dangerous than she expected. Oh, and she got a hot Scotsman named Alistair to watch over her as well.
Alistair didn’t expect to play babysitter for the new doctor, but he can’t argue with his orders. It just makes the job harder that he is attracted to the Mae. He has a hard time keeping his hands off her. The only thing is that living in a city that is so unstable, they end up spending more and more time together. Add in the mysterious virus killing people, and you have a mystery that needs to be solved.
This was book 2 in the Inquisition series. I haven’t read the author before, but I thought it worked well as a stand alone book. It is much more than the typical romance, it is more action adventure. If you like the movie “Sahara”, you will like this book. I would rate this book 3.5 stars.
I received an ARC copy from BookSprout in exchange for an honest review.
I had a hard time getting into this book at first. Alistair's rambling was off-putting at first. It made it hard to follow his thought process and I would forget what was happening while trying to decode his ramblings. Somewhere along the way, Alistair brought out the cheerleader in me. I was rooting for his success in protecting Mae, the doctor. Mae was interesting due to the expectations that she placed on herself, creating unnecessary pressure. She reminded me of myself. I also liked, that despite her profession, the reader sees how vulnerable she is at times. I liked the suspense, but at times, it was confusing too. I really liked the ending. Such emotion poured into that portion of the book. There was adult language, violence, death, scheming and adult scenes.
The writing was easy to slide into, other than the rambling, which took me longer to adjust to. There were editing errors, not many though, but I read an ARC copy, so it's possible that your copy will be corrected.
Fever delivers both cute and suspenseful with a whirlwind of swoony romance that wraps you up. As adorable as Alastair and Mae are I didn’t always find myself really connecting to them all the time. Sometimes I felt things were a bit jumpy other times a bit slow. That flow causing me to be pulled out of the story a bit, but overall I was kept hooked by Alastair’s manchild charm and the gripping mystery that was growing. Alastair really was my favorite in this. A unique mix of child like fun and tough soldier he kept me on my toes with what he would say or do next. As much as I loved that child like quality occasionally it was a bit too immature and left me feeling like it took away from his character. Mae was the ever solid and smart doctor. Even in over her head she still kept a level of calm that balanced out nicely with Alastair’s personality and made them a perfect match.
This was a fun and steamy romance that hooked me right from the get-go. I thought Mae and Alastair had great chemistry and a believable story, and it was fun to root for them throughout. Full of action and an interesting plotline that made this a great read. There were a few weird grammar/punctuation errors, but I would guess those will be edited out before the final version is published.
All in all, this was lots of fun, and I'd happily read more in this series.
(I received an advanced copy from the author - all opinions are my own.)
This is the first book of Mint's that I've read, so I didn't get a chance to read the first book in the series. However, reading this, I felt it was a stand alone story. Mint's Fever was the kind of romance that I like, and the tension and turmoil between the characters build up to something you know is coming, but you don't quite see it until it happens. Mae and Alistair are attractive characters that have a chemistry that isn't forced. Mint writes well and her story brings the action and romance to live. I look forward to reading more of Mint's work.
I wasn't sure what to expect from the second book in the series. Mae and Alistair have their very own, very different story to tell in the same world. Similarities are a sweetheart of a hero and nearly nonstop action. All, of course, with complicated double crossing happening among all the powers in play. Highly recommend if you like your romance to be heavy on plot and action.
Book two in the Inquisition series it is Doctor Mae Jones and Captain Alistair Young's story of an interracial couple that have to go through a lot before they can be together. A story with suspense, the tension between them, a deadly virus that Mae must find a cure for, mystery, humor, and romance. I enjoyed reading how these two come together. This is a new Author to me. This book is a wonderful read. It's setting is great with great characters with perfect chemistry even though they are total opposites. Trying to find out what the virus is, is hard enough never mind the handsome British officer tailing her every move. With rebel attacks while she's working, will she stop the virus and can her officer keep her alive to achieve her goal and to fall in love with him.

This book was too slow at first for me was all over the place for my taste, but about 3/4 of the way through the book started getting really good. I am glad that they where able to answer all the questions that they had and do something about them as well as keep their relationship growing and going strong.

She is going with the army to give children injection but it will not be so easy. She ends with an officer who follows her around but she will have so much more to worry about. Rebels. Fights and even a risk of falling in love. See what will happen

I truly enjoyed meeting Alister and Mae. His shyness and awkwardness was too cute for words. A young doctor that has to save not only the world but the love she found was a thrilling read. A well written story that kept me engaged.
Enjoyed Alistair and Mae's story. Complex in development, fun in the romance. I really appreciated the interracial coupling and a hero that wasn't super Alpha in his approach to the heroine but alpha in his professional skill and abilities but shy, unsure and somewhat lacked confidence in seeing himself with the heroine. He saw her as a prize he felt he wasn't worthy of. Interestingly, the heroine was just as taken with him and couldn't figure how he was looking her way.
