The First Time

It could be the first chapter of a murder mystery. Or something much more sinister...

When Inspector Ian McLean is presented with the opening pages of what appears to be a novel, he soon has to decide whether it truly is a work of fiction... or a confession.

I read this when it first came out and was thrilled by what is clearly not only a detective story but a really thrilling read. Since then I believe (well I know because I rebought it) the book is available on Kindle too.

Of the dozen or so Detective Inspector McLean books in the series this is one of the most gruesome. Yes, it doesn't hurt to read them in order but it certainly issn't essential. Among the dozen this stands out as one of my top 3.

The author is clearly versatile and in the past few weeks has issues a new book that I can also recommend, shorter than the McLean novels, The Vault of Van Zandt is great read for lovers of vampire fiction (or, is it fact? ... scary thought). I hope it becomes a new series in the Rudlin oevre.
