Yeager's Getaway

Rate this book
A Honeymoon… Abel Yeager Style

Abel Yeager has settled into a life of domestic bliss with his lovely wife, Charlotte. He’s left the violence and bloodshed behind to concentrate on being a good father and husband. For their long-delayed honeymoon, Abel and Charlie take a Hawaiian cruise. They’re looking forward to hiking volcanoes and sightseeing, once they meet up with Victor “Por Que” Ruiz and his new love, Dr. Alexandra Lopez.

Their idyllic vacation explodes in violence when a group of Hawaiian separatists, incited by a foreign power, rip through the islands, leaving blood and destruction in their wake. When Charlie is caught up with a group of hostages held by the terrorists as human shields, Abel is forced back into warrior mode.

The Hawaiians are supported by a few dozen foreign special forces soldiers, modern gear, and plenty of munitions. Abel has the help of three septuagenarian Vietnam veteran Marines and his pal Victor. Outnumbered and outgunned, Abel will stop at nothing to rescue his wife.

Fantastic action adventure!! This is my first book in the 'Yeager' series but not my last!! A very interesting plot as a group in Hawaii has decided they are Done with the USA's takeover of their island- bringing tourists, hotels and so many man- made exhibitions to this beautiful place of nature. And a terrorist style takeover is decided upon, with explosions of beautiful sites and the murder of many tourists but also those from Hawaii.
Abel Yeager and his wife Charlie are on their long awaited honeymoon, planning to meet up with his friend Victor and his wife, when unfortunately drawn into this unexplained war! An older group of men, Marines enjoying their elder years, are along for the cruise, and what this group goes through and does to save as many as possible shows the true spirit in American warriors.
Action, humanity and the callousness of those with no worry about Life are shown in an adventure you can Not look away from until you finish the book...
I received a copy from Hidden Gems and author Scott Bell, both I thank for introducing Me to the life of Abel Yeager!!

Marine Abel Yeager is on a delayed honeymoon in Hawaii, when a bunch of Hawaiian separatists, with backing from mysterious advisers, perpetrate a multi-pronged terrorist attack, creating a state of chaos.

On the island of Molokai, the terrorists happen upon Yeager's tour group and take most of them captive. Yeager, and three septuagenarian Vietnam vets escape.

The odds are just about even.

Pretty good story, with a lot of excitement.

Book source ~ ARC. My review is voluntary and honest.

Abel and Charlotte Yeager have finally found time to take a belated honeymoon. A Hawaiian cruise sounds like bliss, doesn’t it? Except that Hawaiian separatists and their foreign advisers have picked this exact moment to make their booming statement. Now Yeager is thrown into another fight for his and Charlie’s lives and with the help of a few good Marines he’s determined to win the day.

Wow! This is a rip-roaring ride from beginning to end. Honestly, I think the Yeager books should be made into action movies. They are that exciting. I don’t know any other way to describe this book than fan-fucking-tastic! But I’ll try.

Due to my love of books 1 & 2 I went into this book with high expectations. I can say with utmost certainty that book 3 does not disappoint. I love Yeager, Charlie, Por Que and the cast of characters they pick up along the way. Abel may be the star but the writing carries the reader along at a fast clip and the action is edge-of-your-seat making this one hell of a good read. I did have a couple of minor issues with it which did not interfere with my enjoyment of the story and one would be a kind of spoiler so I won’t mention them or it here. If you read the book (and why the hell wouldn’t you?!) then you’ll either spot them or you won’t. I also love the ending when it’s obvious that Yeager and Por Que are going on another adventure. I can’t wait!

Note: While this is book 3 in the series it can be read as a standalone. But why? Why would you do that?!

Bonus review by my husband (a Marine) who is not a writer of reviews:

I love it! It's action-packed and fast-paced and I have no major issues with it except for one instance of the term "ex-Marine". There are no ex-Marines. And a huge thank you to the author for capitalizing Marine. A victory for me and my fellow Marines in the world of editing. I also agree with my wife. I think all the books would make great movies.

( Format : Audiobook )
"Silent, disciplined, deadly."
The honeymoon was already beginning to feel slightly less than idyllic as Yeager and his adored wife, Charlotte, together with a small group of others from their cruise ship, began to feel the exhaustion from an elected hike through the wooded Conservation Park. It was an unexpectedly hot summer, bugs were biting and the going hard, especially since a number of the party were elderly and unfit. One seventy something, in particular, was looking unwell and felt unable to go on with the group after a brief rest break. Unable to leave him alone to follow later, the tour guide agreed that Yeager could stay with him and the man's two ex-marine Vietnam veteran friends elected to wait with him, too. Which was why, when the shooting started, they were separated from the main group and not seen by the terrorists ...

This is a thrilling story of an attempted insurrection by Hawaiian seperatists, aided and assisted by soldiers from an outside power, intent on protesting against the annexation of Hawaii by America, and using terrorism to do this. Seen from various perspectives, the characterisation is excellent, the people feel very real and the whole event frighteningly plausible. Adding to the power of this story is the narration by J.Scott Bennett whose pleasant on the ear, gentle drawl has warmth on the surface but with undertones of danger. His voicing of all of the protagonists is also good. A fine performance which adds greatly to the experiencing of the book.

Scott Bell's Yeagers's Getaway is apparently the third in a series but not having read the earlier stories didn't matter: this was a first for me but will not be my last. Action packed, the book still took time for the protagonists to rest, and talk, and plan as well as giving them a reality in the world in which they found themselves at the time. Nicely written, too, with touches of wry humour along the way.
My thanks to the rights holder of this book, who, at my request, freely gifted me a complimentary copy. I know that this story will stay with me, unlike many other thrillers, well into the future because of the sense it gave me of being there, in the story, with the characters themselves.
Recommended.

This is my third Yeager novel. I burned through it in two days. The author has written another great read, filled with fascinating characters, a unique plot and setting, and of course, Abel Yeager.
Abel does not play. Mess with him or those he loves, you will pay the price.
Scott Bell really know his stuff. Whether it's action, romance, or humor--all within these pages--he knows exactly how to convey it. He also knows how to write villains a reader wants killed.
I also enjoyed the Vietnam Vets in this novel: a seriously great addition to the men who did their duty in such a controversial war.
I highly recommend.

Another absorbing read from Bell.

Familiar characters from the first two books in this series combine skills with Vietnam era Marine retirees to spin a riveting story of a terrorist attack on Honolulu. Yeager and Charlie, his wife, happen to be vacationing in Hawaii and, when Charlie takes a hiking tour of Molokai, things begin to pop in typical Scott Bell style. Plenty of guns, knives, and bloody skirmishes as Yeager attempts to rescue Charlie and the hikers from a jungle terrorist camp.

Abel Yeager is joined by a few more quircky characters in this over-the-top action thriller. The story is exciting, but there are a few too many injuries and close-calls for it to be truly realistic. Nevertheless, the likable characters and nail-biting suspense are enough to keep one listening to the satisfying end.

J. Scott Bennett delivers a solid performance consistent with his narration of the previous audiobooks in this series. This remains a series to follow.

NOTE: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

The getaway mentioned in the title is the long delayed honeymoon of Abel Yeager and his wife Charlie (Charlotte), taking a break from having a new baby together. They are on a small cruise ship around Hawaii and their next stop is for a hike in a remote and special reserve area. Unfortunately Yeager got himself extremely drunk with three 70+ year old former marines from the Vietnam War, telling war stories until late in the night. Not what his wife was expecting on their honeymoon!

They plan to meet up with Yeager’s good friend Victor ‘Por Que’ Ruiz and his current girlfriend, Dr Alex (Alexandra) Lopez, who are travelling from Mexico where Dr Alex has been helping out at clinics. When they reach the airport to travel the last leg to Hawaii, there is news of the first terrorist attacks on the island. They decide to go ahead since they are still to meet up with Abel and Charlie and go hiking up some volcanoes and general sightseeing. The atrocities are being done by a home grown Hawaiian group, with Asian help.

The tour group that Abel and Charlie have joined for the walk, along with the three vets and one of their wives, get slightly separated, as one part goes ahead faster than the others. Yeager stays back with the older guys, while his wife goes on ahead with a younger couple and the tour guide and one of the wives. The terrorist incidents have continued to increase, with some foreigners being picked from their hotel rooms. Unfortunately, the tour group are walking straight into an ambush by another group operating as part of terrorist organisation. They are multiple small groups, all with their own targets.

Yeager hears gunfire from up ahead and manages to get the three vets off the trail, before anyone can find them. He splits the four of them up into two pairs. He and one of them who is the best stalker, go to find out what happened with Charlie and the rest of the group. The other two vets are sent back to the beginning of the path to try and get help and notify the authorities. Nothing quite works as expected and Charlie is taken by the terrorists, along with the others, to be used as human shields and hostages.

The terrorist group are being supported by an outside source, believed to be North Korean, with 20-30 well trained Special Forces soldiers. Not an easy group to be overcome by Yeager and the vets, who have no weapons. Coming in late to the situation are Alex and Ruiz. Alex volunteers at a hospital and Ruiz starts to try and find Charlie and Yeager and the boat they are supposed to be on.

Yeager won’t give up on his wife, especially after not being around to save her from a few previous dangerous situations she ended up in, (I presume shown in previous books, which unfortunately as this is the first book I have read in this series, I only know what is told to me in this book) which are described in part and fuel his resolve to rescue her this time, no matter what! He has three old Vietnam vets and his friend Ruiz, all in different roles, to help him.

There is lots of hand to hand combat, close quarter fighting, shots being fired, boats to be boarded and even bumpy car rides and some very nasty bad guys to be dealt with. It won’t be an easy task as most of the enemy are well trained and determined. Who is truly behind all the atrocities is left for the reader to work out, small clues are given as you go through the book, but the final reveal is done well and will surprise many. Gutsy fighting for those you love and against terrorism. A great read and I look forward to going both back to catch up on previous books and awaiting the next books in the series. These are great main characters and the two couples work well together. If you like action, then this is definitely a book for you! I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

This is another great Abel Yeager story. Even on honeymoon trouble seems to search him out, but old friends and new come together to battle the bad guys. This book is full of action, perseverance, battles, camaraderie and characters you can’t help but like. I loved the inclusion of the elderly marines and how even though they were long past retirement they didn’t hesitate to step back into their old roles. To continue to serve, and to protect. The narrator of the audiobook did a great job of all the accents, giving each character an individual voice and really bringing the book to life. The strength, loyalty, love and friendship in this story is great and I look forward to hearing more tales of Yeager and his friends.

Another excellent adventure with Abel Yeager and his wife Charlie and Victor "Por Que" Ruiz and the good Doctor Alexandra. A late honeymoon and the chance to holiday with their friends Victor and Alexandra bring the two couples to Hawaii.
But their timing stinks and the adventures begin.
Probably best if you have read the first two books to really sink your teeth into this 3rd book. These characters are amazing and to spend time with them is a treat and a privilege. I own the Kindle and paperback novels of this book as well as the audio.
J. Scott Bennett the narrator has the perfect voice to tell this tough and rugged story. He is my favorite narrator.

Abel and Charlie are on a cruise in Hawaii when a group of Hawaiian separatists launch a series of terror attacks with the assistance of a paraprofessional military force. As in the previous Abel Yeager stories the action is serious and non-stop. The action could be described as a narrative cartoon. This story includes a bonding with four ex-marines on the cruise, and they all return to their training when a tour group from the cruise is captured by the terrorists and their sumo-sized Hawaiian leader. Charlie is once again the hero of the rescue, and Abel's former friends from the Marines come through for him. The characters are well-defined and very unique. The style of writing makes for easy and quick reading. The suspense forces you to read fast, and then you want to go back and re-read sections. The descriptions of the action are truly brilliant, and that is what this book is about, action.

Scott Bell does it again

Well here we are. I just finished book three in the Adventures of Abel Yeager and family and friends. The action was so fast and furious that it would beat two cars in a drag race. If you want an emotional roller coaster, this book checks all the boxes.

Hawaiian Revolution! The battle cry was heard across the islands, “Hawaii for Hawaiians!” In a unique plot choice, Hawaiian separatists or terrorists, depending on how you look at it, revolt against the U.S. occupation of Hawaii. Yeager and his wife Charlie pick an inopportune time for a honeymoon Hawaiian vacation. Charlie is taken hostage. Yeager, along with several friends, will do whatever is necessary to rescue his wife. Interesting! This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom.

In the third installment of his successful Yeager series, my friend Scott Bell continues to provide booming action thrills as our hero Abel Yeager and his main squeeze, Charlotte, honeymooning in Hawaii, soon find themselves knee-deep in the thick of a revolution involving Hawaiian separatists and a murky foreign power. Looking forward to just getting away from it all for a little while, Yeager's idyllic holiday dream explodes as terror erupts in paradise. Scott Bell's writing and wit are sharper than ever.

Yeager*s Future

After reading Yeager's Getaway, I immediately searched for #4, wondering what situation he would be involved in next. If Mr. Scott Bell does not have an Abel Yeager Novel Book 4 in the works someplace I will be sadly disappointed. The first three books were both realistic and entertaining, leaving a desire for more more, more , like a Jack Reached novel does.

Super action

Loved this story. Not a dull spot anywhere in it. I liked that it continued from the first two Yaeger stories.
