When a boy with grey eyes tells you it’s not your time to die, do you listen?
Ever since the day her baby brother Axel died, Carson has been dreaming of the same boy — the one who told her it wasn’t her time to go when her family’s lift crashed through a bridge railing and sank to the bottom of a river, shattering her life forever. Trapped by the new divide between her and her parents, and by their drastic measures to shelter the only child they have left, Carson escapes into her dreams every night, floating among the clouds with the grey-eyed boy who saved her.
Until her eighteenth birthday—when fate sends her family home up in flames, leaving her waking world flipped upside down.
Suddenly, Carson finds herself on the other side of the country in the big city of Terigon, alone for the first time in her life and dropped into the only waking dream she’s ever had: to attend Yorker Specialty School. But sinister forces are at work beneath the surface of her world, and as the grey-eyed boy slips away from her dreams—only to be replaced by nightmares of flame—Carson finds herself engulfed by a world of deathly secrets and haunting shadows . . . one that makes her the key player in the ultimate game of fates.
I really enjoy Kalyns content, which I believe is why this book received such raving reviews despite the lack of so many aspects it actually takes to produce a book. If I could give her any advice, it would be to take a college level writing class as well as just basic English class to relearn structure. Sentence structure, word usage, subject verb agreement- it all matters when composing a book. The story, while good, lacked consistency. People who have no writing and no English language arts background, equals a book with good content but a lot of errors which makes it hard to get through. As someone who lovveessss literature and great books with an English BA ( MS in Education), I would, if asked, love to edit her next book. Heck, I'd love if she would rewrite this book. Too many words used way too often, for example: despite, portal, dream and I mean throughout a paragraph not chapter. These are all words that you can find other ways to describe what you are saying. The over description made it incredibly cheesy. For free, I would sit and talk about this book and work on editing. Her ideas are great, but it is hard to maintain your ideas when you cross into a world where there are portals attached to the head at the toddler stage and then you're drinking basic coffee in a shop but you don't cook. New things should be streamed throughout this novel to stay consistent with what you're implying. If we're going to go there, let's go! Im intrigued to know how the next book happens but not enough to read it if the writing is not going to improve.
Catcher This book destroyed me. Carson and grey and oh my lord that ending!
I love Kayln but I didnt have high hopes for her book. Only because everyone thinks they can write and alot of youtubers books are well less then average. But I was pleasantly surprised no more then pleasently I really enjoyed the story and the writing was gripping. And i freaking LOVED it!!!!
It was a very unique dystopian of love and loss and getting exactly what you thought you wanted.
It’s currently 4:22 am and I have just finished Catcher...
First of all, I like to blame the author, Kalyn, for crafting such an enticing book that lead me to an all-nighter.
Honestly, this has got to be the most well thought out book I have read so far. I loved how the book is so Kalyn. I don't think there is another way to describe it. Her personality is oozing out from the pages. I love all the characters and how they interact with each other but I think I fell for Grey.
The style of its writing is beautiful. The plot is original and interesting. The just captivates you and leaves you wanting for more- hence the reading till 4:30 am. You can tell this book was writing with patience, love, and determination. It is unique and organic, there was never a moment where I lost interest. The flow of the story and the built up was created to perfection.
I want to say so much more but I really don't want to give out spoilers... Please read it. Buy it, read it, live it- you won't be disappointed. This book is a masterpiece!
Kalyn, you created a wonderful book! I can't wait to read more from you... And read more about Carson and Grey!
okay this book blew me away! i didn’t know what to expect with it being a book written by a youtuber but it was honesty phenomenal. kalyn poured so much of herself into this book and it shows!! i love how she included so much sensory details and really made you feel like you were having the same cup of delicious coffee and pancakes as she was, honestly it made me hungry and crave some good coffee. i love the vibe this book had and she built the world up really well!
this is a dystopian, and it was really unique in my opinion, and the whole idea of the dreams and mind portals and just everything is out together so perfectly. once i got to the halfway point is when things started going down!!! like, i didn’t see it coming, which is always a good thing, and it blew my mind. i love grey, at first i was like “oh he’s like dreamed up as a perfect boy” but that’s only the first of it!!
also, kalyn, i need book two asap! i flew through the last half and can’t stop thinking about what will happen next!!
Really good fantasy book. Would definitely recommend (especially to people that enjoy series such as fallen or hush hush). Ended up reading it all in one day as I couldn’t put it down! It is set in the future but there are ties to real life making it very easy to understand and relate to. Can’t wait for the sequel!
I feel like I have SO much to say about this book, some amazing & some critiques.
Firstly, this book & story was truly Kalyn.. if you watch her videos, listen to her podcast or just read her tweets; it would be quite obvious that this whimsical, beautiful story is hers. I absolutely fell in love with Carson & Grey, Grey specifically. The love felt so real to me, and in some parts it left me holding back my tears.
The second half was definitely my favourite part of the book; I found it fast paces & engaging.. I couldn’t stop myself from constantly flipping the page & needing to know what was happening.
Some things I would say is that the first 150 pages seemed to roll by quite slowly, not much happening & Carson kind of running in circles.. asking herself the same questions over & over again. I found myself tending to get quiet bored, constantly wondering when something was finally going to happen. Although, when something did finally happen & the story started to really commence I was completely attached.
Another just nit picky thing that annoyed me was how many times the word “portal” was used.. I swear it was used 5 times in the same sentence. It was like putting ‘Mc’ in front of everything from McDonald’s. I get it.. it’s a portal closet. Also, sometimes things were a little inconsistent.. as in at the beginning, it was revealed that Carson is homeschooled although it was called something else, but then partway through the book Nicholson used the word ‘homeschooled’ which was confusing.
Overall, I absolutely enjoyed & loved this book. I loved the story, the world building, the characters developments & traits, the futuristic world & technology that was created. I cannot wait for the next book in the series, after reading this one; I am seriously anticipating the rest!
This is a great debut by a first time author; but it irks me that the score for this book is higher than some very well written fiction books by some world renown authors. I have a feeling it's because of the fans from her youtube channel are giving it five stars without having read it yet. While I did enjoy the story there are some extremely obvious editorial errors. Run on sentences and flowery paragraphs that don't really add much, except to be over detailed. I'm a fan of don't tell me, have the characters show me. The ending reminded me of a few YA books I've read in the past but I can't say I'm not intrigued to see where the story goes.
4.5/5 stars. I love Kalyn Nicholson and her youtube channel so so much. I sadly haven’t been able to get my hands on #feels, so i didn’t know what Kalyn’s writing style would be like, but i must say i’m not disappointed! i didn’t give the book 5 stars because i think the plot line is not extremely original, especially near the ending, although it IS already very wonderful. I love Kalyn’s use of imagery and characterization, and really enjoyed reading all the sweet moments between Grey and Carson, while also loving the more suspenseful portions of the book. Overall, i’d say Catcher is a brilliantly written, passionate book that I’d definitely return to in the near future, just to re-read! it’s charged with so much whimsical, magical vibes that i feel like it’ll take me very many reads to truly soak it in. Great job, Kalyn! from a member of the #kozecrew
It's Kalyn's book! As someone who's been following her Youtube videos since close to more than a year and a half now, I have waited for this book to release with bated breath and it has lived up to every expectation I had out of it. It's as beautiful as it's author and yeah, maybe I AM biased, but sue me, I absolutely adore Kalyn and I absolutely adored her book!
Okay but now I'll *try* and give a non-biased review - LOVED the quirky plot, the dystopian setting, the fantasy-but-also-a-little-science fiction element. The plot is very fresh and original, had me hooked till the very end. It's a very fast and easy read, very engaging through and through. There were no places that were draggy or overdone. Very smooth writing. Beautiful language - not very poetic that it gets a bit heavy but also not very deadpan - loved the narrator's voice! And man, I LOVE the cover. I mean, it's Kalyn. It's perfection. I love the way she has built this whole world which despite the bizzareness of it is so convincing! There's some really nuanced world-building there which I really appreciated - for example, they have their own unique little way of telling time, or determining the day and date and year and even seasons! Love it, love the attention to details.
If I absolutely had to find flaws - I wanted to know more about this world! Like, in the beginning she mentions that in the 'old-world' there were zoos, and like, they don't have zoos anymore, so, you know, I assumed maybe there are no animals in this new world? But then later in the book she mentions seeing a man walking a dog from her window so I'm a bit confused as to what's going on here - there's still animals, just no zoos? Or are there just dogs? Like I wanted to know more about the world - why are the food items soy? There's no meat and dairy farming but like, are there cows? I don't know. I would like to. I hope I get more information in the next book.
The plot is pretty solid, but the characters were, I felt a bit, underdeveloped? We spent a lot of time inside Carson's head and I know she loves her coffee (me too, girl!) but what else? With that much amount of time in her head, I should have gotten to know more about her. About Grey, through her (other than his physical appearance - I get it, ocean grey eyes with streaks of silver! But what else? They spend every other night together in her dreams, that's a crazy lot of time to access a lot more information than we got.)
That's pretty much all I got. Love the cliffhanger! Hate that I will have to wait for more. But knowing Kalyn, she'll take her time but she'll deliver her 1000% and that's all I can ask for! <3
If there was ever a book that made me want to take time off just to sit wrapped in its magical pages this was it. When I opened my mailbox to find Catcher waiting for me I couldn’t crack it open fast enough. I’m a huge fan of Kalyn and her incredible work through YouTube and podcasts. Whenever I have a bad day it’s her videos the motivate me to keep my chin up. The thought of her writing a book had really excited me and I’m happy to say that I was not disappointed.
The story of Carson and Grey captivated me right from the first few pages and sent me into a trance, picturing each moment as I read them. I enjoyed this read more than many I have had before and would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to read about romance and fantasy. I will definitely be pulling this out for another read in the future.
Congratulations Kalyn on your first published novel! Can’t wait for more tales of Carson and Grey and whatever other incredible story’s you come up with!
An interesting idea for a fantasy novel but it fell way short of my expectations. Plot twists/details were basically either told to the protagonist or found out by googling. The writing was extremely repetitive and I had trouble getting through the overflow of adjectives. Also there were a few plot holes that I was confused about (not talking about cliffhangers).
BRAVO KALYN! what a freaking awesome read! This book made me smile, made me laugh, and made me cry! I am 100% invested in Grey and Carson! Can't wait for book two! My heart needs book two!
At first I thought I wasn’t going to like this book, just another love story with a girl who was beautiful but didn’t see it for herself.... BUT THEN the magic started happening and the thrilling dreams of Carson and Gray took hold of me. It took me a while to get through to the excitement but once I did I couldn’t put it down. I love Kalyn as a youtuber and as just an inspirational person. But hot damn can this girl write a book. Now I’m just (impatiently) waiting for Catcher 2 to come. I NEED MORE. Highly highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good dystopia/love story. Cause this is my jam.
My dear Kalyn... this book... where do I start. I am ridiculously proud of her for releasing this book. I am not got gonna lie it confused me a little at first, didn't know whats going on. It was a bit chopping in places, but once we were about 100 pages in... like the ball dropped and it was just plot twist after plot twist. I was so scared for our main character, mainly because, this story is like lowkey matrix meets Inception. Which I am deadly afraid of and I trusted nobody. can't wait for the next one!!
I am a big fan of Kalyn’s YouTube channel and podcasts but when I heard she was publishing a book I was skeptical. When I read a book that relates to the authors life it pulls me out of it, such as Kalyn’s shop being named Koze and the coffee shop in the book being named Koze (this removed me from the story a bit). But I gave this book 4 stars because I love Kalyn’s writing, she crafted a wonderful story with lots of cliffhangers to keep me interested, wonderful descriptive writing, and an unexpected ending :)
I have been following the journey of this book and the ups and downs that went into the making since it had a different title. What an adorable book to read under the blankets as your lavender scented candle fills the room. Can’t wait for the second book. Kalyn writes words as beautiful as her soul and I’m so glad I stumbled upon her in my lifetime.
BEAUTIFUL. From start to finish this book was so heartwarming and magical ;u; Also, this book is s0OO Kalyn from the imagery to the characters and their adventures. I loved the songs that were attached to every chapter and I'm so excited for the second book!! 💛
Great plot. I was genuinely amazed by Kalyn’s talent for writing. This isn’t your average youtuber book, she has such a way with words. I felt so captured by the world she created!
I was welcoming this light and dreamy book at the beginning of this year in hopes it would help me run away in a fantasy world away from our reality. And if this book did anything, it was exactly that.
Knowing and following Kalyn for years by now, I kind of knew what to expect and wasn’t disappointed. Catcher doesn’t usually fit into my collection but I so badly wanted to give it a try and like it. I’m my opinion, it’s very foreseeable and if you know Kalyn just a little bit, you found little things from her daily life she shares online in this book - which I had to get used to but further on started to appreciate a lot.
I don’t know if I would’ve bought if if I didn’t know who the author was, but I’m glad I did. It’s an easy read and a great change from what I’ve been reading overall.
Would recommend to anyone looking for change and wanting to dive into another universe.
SPOILER ALERT
As said in the beginning it’s dreamy and light with a great cliff hanger end which makes you excited for the second part!
This book is full of all things beautiful and mysterious. I did not anticipate that a book that I picked up because it is written by my favorite influencer would take me on such a wild and thought provoking adventure. I loved this book and I can’t wait to see where Carson’s next adventure takes her.
I’ve always been so amazed by anything Kalyn creates, so I know she can write a 2nd book in no time...because I NEED IT!!! Those final words of the epilogue have me gasping for air and NEEDING ANSWERS!!! I can’t wait for Catcher 2, literally, CAN’T WAIT!!! Keep doing what you’re doing girl, and let’s get this series rollin’!
First off, I just want to say that I’ve followed Kalyn’s YouTube channel for years and I absolutely adore her. This book just bleeds Kalyn’s aesthetic, and I loved that about it.
I thought that the overall storyline was creative, but I thought that the book started off pretty slow. I thought that the writing was TOO descriptive at times. It got so descriptive at times that I had a hard time following along and I had to re-read many sentences. I also discovered a lot of words were missing in sentences, which could’ve been caught if more time was spent on editing the book. I know Kalyn got frustrated towards the end and wanted to keep making her deadlines, but I think simply fixing a lot of the mistakes and cutting out some of the extra descriptors could’ve easily brought the book up to 3.5 stars. The end of the book definitely leaves me excited for a sequel, but I do hope there is more character development in the next book. This is the first book I’ve read in a while that I didn’t get super attached to the characters and didn’t get emotional at the tense parts like I normally would. Overall, I liked the book, but I think some simple tweaks could’ve made it even better.
I only hope to share constructive criticism with Kalyn to help her grow with her 2nd book!
I would give this 3.5 if I could. I liked the storyline of this book but the grammar throughout is what made it not as enjoyable for me. There are a lot of times when I was reading that I noticed the sentence structure made no sense and I had to reread the sentence a few times to understand what the author was saying. Honestly, it seems like this was written and only half edited in my opinion. The beginning of the book is very slow as well. I had started this book last year and didn’t even finish the first chapter because it was slow, but if you can get past the first few chapters or so then it gets interesting. If this book was written better and edited better I would give it 5 stars. There were also parts of the story that weren’t explained enough in my opinion where I seemed lost of how things happened, it seemed to me that the story didn’t flow smoothly throughout the book. It took me a while to finish because it was hard to get into the story when the grammar and punctuation were just horrible. Some parts seemed rushed as well. If the author took her time writing and editing this would have been an amazing book. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed the storyline and characters, I just wish it was written better.
I had a lot of hype with this book, because as you may know Kalyn is my favourite youtuber, so I bought it the moment it came out. The story is set in a futuristic world because the world where we live now ended because of war and destruction. I like the idea and the technology of that new world and I love to have some of that inventions right now!
So, the protagonist, Carson lost her brother at the age of two, when she was only four. In that accident she dreamt of a boy with grey eyes, and since then she starts dreaming of him as she grows up and the boy grows up with her too. I like her, specially because you can get to know her feelings and get to sympathize with her. On the other side, Grey, the boy of her dreams, we can say (at least in my opinion) is everything a girl is looking for.
Talking about the plot, I got hooked from the very beginning and it has a twisted end that, oh my god! I'm just waiting for the second part of it! It is really well written and the descriptions are really good.
It's kind of hard for me to rate this book, because I definitely read it at the wrong time. But, if I have to - then 3.5 stars. I really liked the premise, and I feel like younger me would absolutely devour this. However, this was way too short, and I wanted more - to get to know this futuristic world better and to see the plot progress more gradually and logically. The pacing felt too slow at times but then rushed at other times, and not everything made the most sense. All that being said, I'm a long time Kalyn fan, and I simply enjoyed tapping into her mind and reading something she created. I could sense how personal parts of the story were for her, which made it a lot deeper. And coming up with this dystopian world just shows the amount of creativity and wisdom this woman has - something I've always appriciated and took inspiration from. To conclude, I probably should have read this 7 years ago when I was 20 and it just came out, but I'm still so glad I finally got my hands on the physical book and read it properly. Hopefully, we'll get the next one soon.
I started this book right at the beggining of the semester, and was forced to put it down for a long while because I was overwhelmed with exams and uni work. I finally picked it up again on Tuesday and I immediately got addicted to it. There's a plot twist around halfway through the book that totally snatched my wig and had me reading as fast as I possibly could just to find out what happened next.
My only "issue" with it (which isn't an actual issue) is the ending: it ends in a cliffhanger, and now I'll have to wait until part II comes out to find out how the story continues (so sad, I know).
When it comes to characters, I liked most of them; I felt so much empathy towards Carson and I even developed a bit of a crush on Grey and his tousled hair.
Overall, I really enjoyed the storyline and the universe Kalyn has built, and I will absolutely buy the next part once it comes out.
I'm a massive fan of Kalyn and was intrigued to read her first novel. Which is something to bare in mind if you read this. It's a good effort and I think that if some continuity and writing styles has been tweaked she could have got a book deal instead of self-publishing. The story is interesting and easy to follow and it's quite easy to get in the head of the main character. My issues with it were 1. It does feel like a cop out to write a fictional book with Kalyn herself basically being the main character. Not based on similar. If you follow her online you know it's literally her head-voice. 2. The story begins with her as a 5 year old, in her 5 year old voice/thoughts. But there's no difference in how she's written it and if you weren't told to start with that she's 5, you'd assume it was a teenager.
That didn't stop me from enjoying the book overall and I would/will buy her second book when it comes out
Catcher has been a pleasure to read, not least because Carson has been infused with so much of Kalyn's quirky and infectious personality. Kalyn I'm so proud of you and thankful that you constantly share your journey and creativity with us. Your YouTube videos fill me inspiration and positivity, your podcasts keep me motivated and fill in the long commutes and Catcher has been a dream to read. You're one talented cookie and your creativity always amazes me.
I didn't know what to expect when I first started Catcher. It's safe to say that I was a little unsure with it being your first book, but I've gotta say all the twists and turns has kept me at the edge of my seat. Catcher is thrilling and I became transfixed with the futuristic world you have created.
I came for Kalyn, but I stayed for Carson and Grey ☁️
After finishing this book I am absolutely shook!! The metaphors and the consistency of her writing had my heart from the first page. I completely fell in love with the characters and the ending was phenomenal. I also loved how many twists and turns there were, ones I would never of expected. I would recommend this book to any fellow book worms.
Kalyn if you are reading this review, your videos have inspired me so much for the past few years. You truly make me believe that all the years I’ve spent in my ivory tower will come to an end. That no matter if I feel I’ve been cursed by anxiety, all evil spells can be broken. Thank you for sending out your energy into the world and inspiring so many of us to chase our dreams. You are the light that this world so desperately needs. I can’t wait to see where your next adventure takes you.
