Rating: 2.5 leaves out of 5
Characters: 3/5
Cover: 2/5
Story: 3/5
Writing: 2/5
Genre: Fantasy/Romance
Type: Book
Worth?: If you can get over Derana, yes.

This book was written by a lovely lady that I know from Book Lovers Discord (which you should totally join :D) which makes me conflicted to be truthful for the sake of not hurting feelings but I think that would be a disservice to her.

With that said there were a lot of things I liked. The story was okay, it was your basic everyday the world needs saving and the hero will do so. I liked the supporting characters and despised the main, which really brings the book down a few notches for me. Adding to that a lot of the book was telling and not showing us. We missed a lot of the twins growing into who they are, besides Raethon whom we see a lot more growth than we ever do with Derana. Everything that should be in there is skipped over with time skips. Like when they had to grow up in a particular setting or how things were done. A lot of that take away really dampened the book.

Because of these giant holes it made Derana a big Mary Sue. Just because you are a hero doesn't mean you don't have flaws. There were times when she "had a flaw" but calling the flaws is like accidentally giving someone a paper cut and then calling it murder. The two don't add up.

Will I be reading the second book? I am not sure. From the way it ended it looks like If it isn't I MIGHT...

It was hard to give it a 2, but I just didn't like it all as much as I wish I would have. But it was okay and I didn't absolutely hate the book even though I did want to throw it sometimes. Between the holes in the story and the trope, of it was just too much and usually I wouldn't mind that trope if it wasn't for her seeming so Mary Sue-ish.

Either way Rae and Kaiden can come to my fanfiction any day. Lolol.

I love this book. Initially, the wonderful author was hosting weekly readings for members of the Discord Book Lover's Club (come join us!). The readings are lovely and her voice is angelic. However, the story is TOO gripping to sit back and enjoy one chapter at a time. I needed the book in my hands so that I could fully immerse myself in this adventure. I enjoy the main characters and appreciate their bond with each other.

Overall, phenomenal read. I stayed up late several nights, simply because I could not put it down. Thank you, J., for putting this out into the world and for taking time out of your week to read with us. I would like to nominate myself for Secretary of the J(ae). Fan Club. <3

There was a lot to love here. You give me an interesting world with a few lovable characters, and I'm happy. Shrout creates an immersive world with plenty of variety and depth and a cool magic system. The three main characters have an enjoyable dynamic and the romance within the book is very sweet and heartwarming. It's told in third-person omniscient perspective, which is typical of a lot of classic fantasy, however head-hopping is not my preference, which is probably my biggest complaint (and if you read my other reviews, POV and tense tends to be my biggest complaint in books most of the time lol). But that is entirely a personal taste thing. Just like with present tense, I will overlook it for a good story. And this was a good story.

I really like the new take on magic and the ethical considerations to the actions the characters take. If you enjoy books for the journey, this is an amazing book of a girl growing up with the odds stacked against her, finding herself and her own path through many challenges and social/political groups. Some of the writing can seem sudden or out of place (the transition to part two is an interesting change of perspective) but it’s an amazing story overall.

My notes from book club:

Finished The Rising! I loved it!! I really enjoyed the story and the secrets kept me excited. I was sad about Jaasti. I don’t really understand what happened with her. She was team Derana and the prophesy right up until Derana released the book translation? Then she didn’t even come to the battle? Anyways, I loved Derana and Kaiden’s romance. It was cute. I thought Breod, Havina’s brother was going to be more of an issue at some point since he seemed so hateful. I really enjoyed the descriptiond, too.

Just finished ch.26 The Rising. FINALLY we get all the good stuff. :halre:. They just needed magic to get in level 2 of the library, except since no one talks about magic they only barely figured that out 🤣 . I love that Derana came clean about everything to both Raethon and Kaiden. So Derana basically just told the school about the book she translated and they got all butt hurt and didn't want to believe it AND her homie didn't even back her up even though she knew Derana was right. That's some bullshizzle Jaasti, I was on your team! Also, not only is she in the prophesy like she thought, but her brother too. Now, she's going to marry Kaiden! After all the books I've read I am so scared of who may or may not die 😨 . I'm excited! eee.:bunCheer:

Ch.22 The Rising so Raethon just killed a couple dudes who tried to ambush him with Vraden. He just disintegrated the bodies :wha: lol. Derana going to marry Kaiden to get in the library! Jesus. At first I was like weee I love Kaiden, and then I was like damn this fools desperate lmao and now I can’t tell if he’s in some long con:SDVpuffersquint: …I do like the whole vibe the three of them have going on, it’s cute. OH yeah and Raethon just got some amazing idea

Am in ch.13 The Rising. Derana has made her way back to town and is on her way to try and get a job with a noble. She keeps dropping these hints about how she parted with the school. This last one says she's mourning...DERANA? What did she do..
rainbowfox — 01/04/2022
Just finished ch.11 The Rising. Oookay, Derana just spoke her own vows by the river. Per the deciphered words, the Clearians are not following the ways of their prophet. The vows the wanted Derana to speak were not the true ones. I am excited that she is doing what she's wanted since the start of the book, but also scared for her once the truth comes out. Not sure where this is going. Hmm. Maybe something bad will happen to her and this time Raethon will save her? Let's find out. :letsfindout:
rainbowfox — 01/03/2022
In addition oh man Jaasti just had a super cute moment. I hope she doesn’t die. Reee.
Oh my gah, “I am magi”
rainbowfox — 01/03/2022
Oh snap I’m at the beginning of 9. Raethon’s mind and now Derana just unlocked the Burden of Prophecy
rainbowfox — 01/03/2022
Just finished ch.6 The Rising. Since my last post, the twins are in school. Both are experiencing bullies and handling them in their own way. We find out Derana has perfect auditory memory and she has a job with a Clerian teacher at the school. Hopefully they become friends, but there was a small comment made that Derana wonders if they'll regret their deal. Raethon was being beaten up and in that moment an air wave blasted the boys off him and he was also healed of his cut. He was surprised by this and determined that it must be his sister's wards. He has learned to tap into the Expanse and is using it for bodily functions. Very similar to Wheel of Time, The Expanse eventually makes men go mad. I am left wondering if he will go mad. Both of them are continuing with their amazingness. I still have no idea what to expect!

Just finished ch.3 The Rising. Wow, their parents died so quick and gut wrenchingly :BlobCry:. I can’t believe those villagers went out of their way to try and get her. So they quickly become amazing little crime bosses and then disappear with their money. That’s the smartest move I’ve ever seen people who take that route go! 😂 I was sad to see them separate, but excited to hear Raethon will go try to be a mage! Derana has been accepted as a second year student, so she’s right in par with her amazingness. I’m excited to read more about the school. I’m wondering if it will be like the white tower in wheel of time. Also interested in the hierarchy. :BlobStudent:

Just finished ch.1 the rising. ooo okay, super crazy intelligent twins who each have their own special traits. The girl learns how to use magic from a Clerian woman traveling with the group, but not the boy. I question why only she learns it. Hmmm. There are some strict rules to being a Clerian that Derana doesn’t like. Her and her brother stumble on a little ruin site and she finds some krystallus, which it is previously mentioned that you would get if you speak the vows to become a Clerian. So now she has this stone without having to adhere to these rules she doesn’t care for. Considering how incredible she is, I’m wondering if she’ll end up trying to make some big changes in the clerian world in the future…:BlobPopcorn:
