It’s just another day at your average American high school for the magically gifted.

Dark magic is bent on destroying the school. A Drow princess is gaining powers faster than she knows what to do with them. Her best friend, a Jasper Elf can’t remember who she is, and her boyfriend turns into a wolf at night and runs with his pack.

By day, they’re trying out for the school play, worrying about who’s going to the fall dance, and oh yeah, are excited about Halloween when the dead can finally talk to the living again. Just your typical teenager in America when magic returns.

Alison, the Drow and her best friend, Izzie, the Jasper Elf are determined to get everything they can out of high school… even if they have to stay one step ahead of the Dark families to make it to graduation.

Powers Grow

Alison, Izzie and crew develop powers at an alarming rate. The compelling characters have strong chemistry. I like the action, humor, and romance.
Purveyors of dark magic still seek to capture and corrupt them. Will they become strong enough to resist the dark ones? I look forward to the next book.

Great job

A enjoyable saga which I am enjoying. I am awaiting the next book already. This one of the series I have kept up with, they are stories that I want to reread over and over again.

Another lesson learned

I have to admit that I really enjoy some of the humorous parts of these books. Dorvu is so funny. I can actually picture him and hearing him talk like a teenage girl would be so darn funny. Add in the wacky troll and the human Horrace who I still can't figure out how he got the job and as a human gets to stay at the magic school. I just love how he interacts with the kids. What I don't understand is why he is needed if they are magical his job should be a piece of cake for them to do. Anyway, I have been getting Raines crew mixed up with Alison so I have to remind myself where they belong but that's on me. I read Raines books first and fell in love with them to begin with. I am all backwards in this universe but it's still a fun ride. I wish I had an imagination like Martha and Michael.

Mystical magical urban fantasy along the lines I’m Harry Potter

Very entertaining urban fantasy series. A magical school in Virginia or students go to a magical high school and learn to develop their powers. And like Harry Potter there are more than witches and wizards there are also elves shifters and if you other different magical beings to go to the school. There is a very strong headmistress character in the story does revolve around main group of students for the most part and the headmistress is also a mainstay in the story. There’s also the fight of light versus dark good versus evil etc. No spoilers though he missed read it to find out and you will not be disappointed so far it is extraordinarily entertaining

Those who don't write have no idea how it can be hard. The last thing your thinking about is the stories, not punctuation. Those who base their review and stars on punctuation are not reading, their just looking for something bad. That said, I always base my reviews on whether or not the book takes me away. If you can see and feel the story ... it's a keeper! I love this series, especially when you can connect with the books about the other characters with books of their own. Alison's story just gets better and better. I really like it when I think I know whats going to happen next and then surprised by the twist. Judith Berens, you are the best! (Is Mara someone in your family?) LOL

Dragons, dark magic and friends

Okay I love the way the teens lives are portrayed as they form relationships but when are we going to get to the nitty gritty part - the missing parents, the dark magic users and the plans being made for the school? Another term, another year! Their dragon has hatched but he managed to destroy their room once he did. All the girls are glad to get back and as the days and weeks pass they start forming couples. Watch as they deal with life at a magic school and the tribulations of growing up. Unknown to them plans are being made by the dark magic users for the school. What are they? How will it affect them?

Ok, I admit it. In a universe where I already have several favorite characters, it's not easy to shake up which of them has top ranking–but Alison has managed to do just that. YA categorization for this series be damned, readers of ALL ages will enjoy the stories about this young lady and her friends at The School Of Necessary Magic.

Magic...humor...fun...believeable characters...interesting plot twists...ties to two other series...and now (spoiler alert!) a dragon. What more could you ask for? :) Oh wait, I know...MORE STORIES!

While I am enjoying this series. I feel like nothing really exciting is happening. I also feel a little lost at times. This is most likely because I'm not reading books from the entire universe, but just this series. So things seemed to have played out elsewhere and are mentioned in this series. What happened with Henry & Izzie? How did Alison and Tanner get back on track? What happened with the toombies? I am thinking maybe these things played out in other books, so I feel like i'm missing big chunks of the story. Especially in this book.

Great story!

I don't write reviews. Except for this universe. I love how they created a universe and brought so many people in to play. It's good when an author creates a new world or a new way of looking at things but if you have to wait years between books or you only get one viewpoint you can grow weary.
This series along with the leira chronicles and the unbelievable Mr Brownstone and Shay's series give you the whole story. Thank you to Martha.

With "Wary is Her Love", School of Necessary Magic has, in my opinion, found it's stride. This book has a good balance between the characters as well as between their individual abilities and limitations. The authors have done an excellent job of portraying both the need for support of friends and the reluctance to seek advice and/or help that many young adults struggle with daily.

Alison is growing up and coming into her magic

Alison is beginning to learn about the Drow magic that she has inheirited from her mother, and Izzie is learning about her magic also. Both girls have pledged "sisterhood" to each other.

This book is #3 in the series, and my 13yo granddaughter absolutely loves the series...she sent me a text a couple of hours ago.

A great read whatever your age

Another semester at the school of necessary magic and I couldn't put it down. Considering I'm an old fart I love YA fiction as long as it is written well and this is. I love the characters and the school settings.
Please keep writing , I love losing myself in your stories.😀

Another interesting semester

The School of Necessary Magic is a fun place to escape to whether you are YA or not. Many of the plot lines are open ended but once your hooked just follow the rise. For HP fans you will see similarities, just like there are only a few strings on a guitar, there are only so many different things in boarding schools

Alison & co are awesome

This might be YA fiction, but I'm really enjoying it. I love how Martha has brought the characters to life and includes funny interludes. It's exciting to se Alison and Izzie growing into their powers and discovering what they are capable of. Bring on book #4!

Wary Is Her Love:Urban Fantasy/Alison Brownstone.

Young Adult magic...giving Rowling rollicking run for her money! I'd happily recommend this to anyone. Alison is not only growing up but growing into her powers. Adopted dad won't be happy about the budding romance with Tanner.

A pregnant ending

Naw, not what you are thinking. The final chapter leaves you with a feeling of crews, like what's about too happen? Next book could be interesting, with dark magic, more Dragon, and teenage hormones

I know these books were mostly aimed at the teen/young adults, but I found them captivating and fun! I'm a bit older than either of those! LOL These stories are interesting and exciting and I find myself not being able to turn the pages fast enough!

Love Allison and Izzie

I really enjoyed reading this one as much as the others. The gang seems to ended up having some good times mixed with the occasional headache caused by the dark wizards. Onwards to the next one.

Kindle unlimited -- fast books are good because being put out faster to read...IF they don't have typographical, grammatical, continuity, opposites/contradictions {glaring, from earlier passages/books}, still ongoing issues with how is talking, who is talking to who or why or even what as seemingly things rewritten/moved around/left out so no idea, all things that are supposed to be currently going on yet jumps from one day to another, one month or even season to another, and still acting as if hadn't been years and years since Leira and magic and all the rest were out, including parts that acted as if YTT had not been at the school very often, hardly at all yet in next section if there on regular basis, and issues/problems brought up in story line but either never talked about again or glossed over repeatedly, then finally get to end, that really wasn't an ending it just stopped for no reason again as if the entire book was just one long sorta kind teaser, 4th book of this series have read, NO MORE, only gave the other series 3 shots, and the 2.0 is coming up for #3 shot as well, it's ridiculous, if can't take the time to deal with all the way too many issues, then I refuse to take the time to read any more of them.

2.5 And You Will Know The Same Stars

Wary Is Her Love is the third book in The School Of Neccessary Magic series by "Judith Berens".

There were multiple scenes I enjoyed in this book. However, there was no true plot. It's almost worse than the first book in that way. There seemed to be more isolated incidents, instead of any driving force or connection between each moment. At least beyond the basic magical high school drama that is generally expected. Except there wasn't really any of that, everything was far too tame.

This doesn't have the same air as other works I've read by Anderle and Carr, outside of the first book in this series. This honestly feels very lazy for their normal writing styles. And far too slice of life, given the mayhem and explosive twists I've come across in their other work.

I enjoyed see everyone grow. I like this cast of characters, but I do believe the author duo is doing them a disservice. There's isn't any true emotion behind her pairing with Tanner, it's giving extremely forced or fake vibes. Of there's moments like when Ethan and Kathleen fought while they got lost in the kemana, that don't come across as more than the authors intentions for that moment, instead of being true to the character.

On that same note, how can none of the students question the fact that both times something happened in the kemana, they were giving directions there by someone? Or why hasn't Alison told her friends of all of the Dark essence she's seen in people, especially on one of her trips there with Izzie? Isn't it troubling how dark this particular kemana is, especially given the fact that it is the one feeding the school the power that protects it? Then there's Tanner's kernel of darkness in his soul, and that he's visited this kemana before coming to school. I find it very doubtful that if that is true he didn't notice the general air of malcontent in the area. And that Willens have saved them each time, which may or may not have to do with Izzie?

How do they intend to hide a dragon?

I know the students are teenagers. But this level of naivete and ignorance is frustrating. And the two dimensional character tropes are making it difficult to enjoy Alison's time at the School of Neccessary Magic as much as I would like.

I very much enjoyed this book.

It's nice to read how everyone in Alison's group are growing, and changing, and exploring life more.

But it's also nice to read of familiar times that they share, in the School of Necessary Magic, too.

This book has the young dragon growing, and finally revealing his name, which is: Dorvu - with the meaning of his name being: 'one who understands the ways of a dragon' (Pg. 454).

There were many things happening both in the school, in the local town, and in the kemana underground, where touches of dark magic keep on appearing, then disappearing just as quickly.

I'm not sure where it will lead, but Alison's best friend, Izzie, is very much involved, I believe, although I don't think that she knows about this.

There were more social occasions for Alison and her friends to enjoy, along with various clubs and sports that have become available to them in their Sophomore year, and this does affect them, in both good, and maybe not so good, ways.

Oh, and my favourite Troll of all appears, too! Lol

But, as I said, I did enjoy reading this book - but I also felt that it was written in a way that felt as though the story was skimming along; going at a rate where you couldn't stop to really think about what was happening.

I'm hoping that this is deliberate, and that the following book in the series, book four: 'Strong Is Her Hope', will explain the slight rush!

That's because my reading list tells me that this is the next book to read, so I'm going to finish this review, then go straight on to read it.

Once I've finished it, I'll catch you on the flip side to let you know what I think about this next chapter in Alison's story!
