Why two stars? Prpbably because I love the Warriors series. But this book was just a filler. I mean, I was so happy when I saw it was so long! But then, nothing happens. Dovewing gets pregnant and has a dream she has to leave the forest and go to the city so her kits will have a nice chance. She tells Tigerheart, but he is divided between his clan, suffering from Darktail's intent of drestroying it, and his love for her. Ultimately, he follows her to a new place.

For a bit it looked like lots of things could happen, new alliences, lots of new things as we are talking city cats here! Nope. A bit of a tussle, a bit of an "adventure" of sorts, and come back to square one with a bunch of new and old acquitances. I dunno... this could have been much more, but it felt kinda flat... short.

What a waste of time.

This is not going to be a fun review as a heads up. Also unmarked spoilers ahead.

There are side books that should be written. It gives background on characters, expands the world, gives us something more. Basically it is to deepen the understanding of characters that don't usually get a chance to shine.

Well this book did that...and dragged a lot of other crap into it.

I'm going to come out and say it. My main issue in the book is Dovewing.

This girl had SIX BOOKS for herself and for her adventuring. Why is she an important character here? What purpose did she truly serve besides being a plot token?(and popping babies?) She also seemed very OOC. Like this girl faced the Dark Forest, she was a StarClan chosen. However when Tigerheart brings up the possibility he might be chosen for something she scoffs at it?

She is also ridilcious self-centered and doesn't seem to care that she left her friends/family behind to go on this dangerous quest(let's not get into the fact, she followed a dream and stuff). She was also such a pain the ass during the whole time she was around that it brought up my feelings I had against her from back int the Ooats days(I was way happier reading about Ivypool than her).

Tigerheart was alright by himself. When Dovewing was around. Oh boy, that was a PAIN in the ass. All I have to say about him.

The story? Fluff. So much fluff. So much of this book could be chopped out. I was even skimming at parts because I was bored out of my mind and I wanted the torture to end.

And guess what.

It didn't feel worth it.

What point was there for Dovewing to have her kits in the city? Besides getting those 3 cats(who, since they are going to ShadowClan, are not going to mean anything) THERE WAS NO POINT. It was like the second trip to find SkyClan. Completely unneeded.

And don't get me started on the ending. So much eye rolling from me there.

Also, can we PLEASE STOP WITH THE FORBIDDEN ROMANCE. Guess what Erins, this is nothing special now. It's more annoying than anything else. It happens far too often and honestly I do not care anymore.

Also this means that ThunderClan technically has connections to leadership in 3/5 clans. COME ON.

Compared to all of the other books I have read in this series, this has to be the most unneeded edition in the franchise. This book was nothing but filler and did not make me invested on what was happening with these characters in particular. Reading this book has ruined my faith in the series going forward after having success with the current main series.

The first thing that I did not like about this book was the main character the story focussed on. Tigerheart is portrayed as an indecisive deputy who cannot make up his mind if he wants to help his failing Clan and disgrace of a leader, or be with his wife who runs away and ditches him after he expressed his loyalty to his Clan over her, and continues this behavior throughout the book. It got annoying very quickly and only stalled the main plot further. Then, he does absolutely nothing worthwhile to make the rest of the book worth it except die near the end. His POV was uninteresting to me, and does not improve his character from the previous arc.

The second thing that I did not like was the plot. The plot reused plots from other Warriors books that focussed on journeying cats, and it is getting old. They've done it five or six times already. Why can't the authors and editors come up with an original plot anymore?

The plot was barebones. Tigerheart, Dovewing, and the other characters in this book barely had anything to do. They fought foxes twice, explored the city, gave birth to three cats, then came back to the lake. That's it. I had to skip pages because the characters were just sitting around bored. I feel bad for them, because the city cats were very unique and had a culture that I wanted to explore more. Sadly, Kate had glossed over the more interesting characters for the boring, uninteresting ones instead. Also, why are they adding in another prophecy into the current main arc? We have three going on at once: the one from Hawkwing's Journey, the A Vision of Shadows one, and this one. That's too much. I don't think they'll have enough pages to complete them all.

The third thing is all the plot holes created in the absence of a main series book. Without the background information Darkest Night will provide, this book does not explain certain elements that are important such as:

The fate of certain characters. Aside from Kinkfur and Dawnpelt, who were both in StarClan, and Berryheart, Sparrowtail, Rippletail, and Cloverfoot, who are alive, the cats who died in Thunder and Shadow from yellow cough and the missing cats in Shattered Sky have unknown fates as of this review.

Rowanclaw/star. What happened to him? What did he do to deserve his leader name being stripped away from him? He is just a terrible leader in general, and this book cements his awfulness.

Twigpaw and Violetpaw moving to SkyClan. Last time I checked, Twigpaw and Violetpaw wanted to stay in their original Clans. Why did they move?

SkyClan's territory. It sounds to me that they solve that issue within Darkest Night, but we barely get any background information to that. The book states that both ThunderClan and ShadowClan split territory by Tigerheart's suggestion, but how did they come to that decision?

The fourth and final thing that I did not like about this book is the ending. Why would they make Tigerheart leader out of all things? I can think of better cats who actually deserve the position of leader than him. Tawnypelt, Needletail, and pretty much anyone in ShadowClan would be better. This has presented confusion amongst the fandom. How are readers going to differentiate the two Tigerstar's apart from each other other than physical descriptions? Also, this leader and his mate are not punished for going behind everyone's backs and creating kits and creating more problems. I would also like to mention that nobody questions this at all throughout the book.

This is one of the worst books I have read since Robbin Hobbs' Blood of Dragons earlier this year. However, unlike Blood of Dragons, which ruined the ending of the entire series, Tigerheart's Shadow has left a bad impression on a series that started to rise from the average reception of Omen of the Stars and the controversy of Spottedleaf's Heart. This goes to show that even though A Vision of Shadows is doing wonders for the publishers, they can also manage to pump out terrible stories with characters that do not need a novella or super edition. If you liked Tigerheart's Shadow, good for you. I'm glad that you enjoyed it. However, I am one of the few fans who does not like the character or this book that much.

I hope that Darkest Night will be decent, because if not, I am officially done reading this series. I have read better, more thought out books with intriguing plots and characters that I actually care about. I cannot keep up with the characters anymore because the series has gone downhill in terms of quality. The side books are not fun to read anymore and seemed forced.

Overall, Tigerheart's Shadow is a waste of time. It does nothing worthwhile to contribute to the main plot aside from one character introduced who may have importance, created numerous plot holes and raised more questions than answers, and left interesting characters in the dust in place of characters who had previous development. It also had an overused plot device in the journey trope, and a story that does not have higher stakes despite ShadowClan falling apart off screen. I recommend that you skip this one.

This book wasn't entirely bad, but it was a complete waste of a Super Edition. Tigerheart's personality was barely developed at all--he just became the stereotypical good guy. I was super excited as soon as Tigerheart traveled into the city, but nothing came of it once they met the guardian cats. Speaking of the guardian cats, I felt as if they had a lot of potential, but most of them (Except for Fierce, Spire, and Blaze) fell flat. I kept screaming at this book to show, not tell. Seeing city life would have been fantastic, and seeing all the differences from life by the lake would knock this book up a few pegs, but the book delivered nothing. Most of the book is just Tigerheart and the guardian cats scavenging and fighting some foxes. There's no conflict. I liked the characters of Fog and Tuna, because I felt Tigerheart wasn't doing the right thing by thinking that all cats should be warriors. Fog and Tuna weren't even that bad in my eyes, they were just trying to survive.

Spire's visions made me really excited to finish the book, but there was nothing. I basically trudged through hundreds of pages just to reach nothing but Tigerheart dying?? and then being reincarnated??

Honestly, this book could have been done so much better. The only reason it's not one star is because it was okay. Dovewing and Tigerheart got some much-needed development, even if it wasn't that much. The best part of the book is at the beginning, when we can really see how ShadowClan is struggling and how Rowanstar is struggling to lead his clan. Also, why was Rowanstar's death offscreen? Just like Blackstar...

I wouldn't read it if I were you. As Lightflame said on the forums, "I just thought it was really boring and unnecessary, and it's a perfect example of everything the new writing team does wrong. Poor character handling, completely fumbled buildup and foreshadowing, pointless deaths, braindead characters, and lackluster climaxes are all here."

This book! That ending! I’m still in shock….
That being said, at times I did feel the book was a little slow but I get why they did it that way and all in all, it was a good book. I’m quite happy with it and glad I read it.

When I was growing up these books were my favorite series! I don't know how I fell out of them but somehow I did (which I sincerely regret). Thankfully, I rediscovered them this past summer and I am slowly reading all the books again. I am so happy to have rediscovered this wonderful series. This super edition of course is no exception. I absolutely loved it! I practically devoured this book! I really love how the cats personalities progress as the story goes on. I feel that by the end of their long journey they all have grown. I wish now that I were all caught up with the new story arc but I know that will come in due time. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this book despite not reading the new arc. I know fans young and old will enjoy this book.

Solid four stars. I honestly don’t know if this book deserves that rating. I’m starting to realize Warriors books always feel so GOOD to me even though I know they’re not because that’s the writing I’ve grown up with. I got this book the day it came out and read it around the same time as Darkest Night. They were written together, if I recall correctly.

Yet this book has a huge inconsistency with Darkest Night. In this book, one of the main things that pushes Tigerheart/star to leave is that Rowanstar ALMOST STARTS A WAR with SkyClan over a piece of prey. This happens DURING Darkest Night, while Twigpaw was with SkyClan. We should have heard something about this then, but, of course, we didn’t. Because this is Warriors. And that level of consistency is only reserved for the best of the best.

Aside from that, the whole conflict with Fog was fun and all. . . But why did Tigerheart/star not like her from the get-go? He was right, obviously, about her being “evil”, but he had literally no reason to suspect her when he first met her. Aside from that, the whole thing with the guardian cats just served as another instance of warrior life being the holy grail of living in this world. . . For literally no reason. I hate that EVERY group they come across is treated as inferior to them, is exactly like them, and/or needs to be fixed by them. SOMETIMES ITS ALL THREE. It’s honestly mind-numbing.

All that being said, I still love the way Tigerheart/star comes back from the dead. It always feels so satisfying. I also enjoy that this book does feel like a journey where our characters learn something, instead of just cats walking from Point A to Point B. Although that might be a little generous seeing as even our “interesting” side characters (sorry, character: it’s just Spire. No one else has any personality whatsoever) don’t learn anything. . .

Oh well. It’s a Warriors Super Edition and it wasn’t awful. Can’t expect too much here.

This book was phenomenal. I may have hated Dovewing for 80% of the book and forgot about her for 15% of the book, but in that 5%, I really enjoyed her and I'm glad she's joining Shadowclan! This book made me really excited to read Darkest Night! Blaze was definitely one of my favorite characters, but I also adored the brief characters of Ajax, Rose, and Fuzzball. My favorite character in the book would have to be Cinnamon. She dedicated and strong but also kind. I loved this book, though I'm sure many people will disagree. This book wasn't perfect, but it definitely was worth reading! :3

I liked this book, and I liked the section where it took place. I like that they fill the gaps of the main stories with short stories like these. I wish that Tigerhearts personality in this book carried onto the actual series because he seems more reasonable and less harsh when making decisions. I wish it would have included the naming ceremony for the new cats like Blaze and cinnamon. I think I have almost finished all the super editions/novellas now.

Another book about fictional cats written for children that ripped my heart out. At least this one put some of my heart back in at the end.

Premise: Much like Darktail and his rogues have shredded ShadowClan from the inside, Tigerheart – ShadowClan's deputy – has never felt more torn in his life. Despite wanting to support him, he knows his misguided father is not the leader his Clan needs. Yet when the young dark tabby tom and the Clan's medicine cat share the same haunting dream, Tigerheart is forced to ask himself if he's meant to stay with ShadowClan at all. Must he leave behind all he knows and loves? Or is ShadowClan's last hope for survival vanishing when they need him most?

Story/Writing: Having read this just after "River of Fire," and knowing that this is supposed to take place at the same time as "Darkest Night" and "River of Fire," I was pumped to read this super edition! When Tigerheart was brought back to life as Tigerstar (or Tigerstar II as I'm going to call him in the future to avoid confusion with you-know-who) and I saw all these new characters with him and Dovewing, including his and Dovewing's kits, I HAD to know what they were up to! And I am SO glad I read this super edition! It may be one of my favorites. I absolutely loved the themes of loss, return, trust, family, community, and forgiveness. They were all woven into a deep and engaging story that I might probably want to read again some time in the future, once I get caught up with everything else. Not to mention this story is full of pleasant surprises I did not see coming! For example, when Dovewing in the beginning describes the place she dreamed about – the place where she wanted to raise her and Tigerheart's kits – I thought at first that it might be an apartment building or something like that. But then when we got there – and there was further description including rainbow-colored windows, stone slabs, and the fact that Twolegs have their "yowling time" there once every quarter moon (week) – I found out it was a really a church/cathedral. Maybe it's because I'm a person of faith, but I thought that was a really nice touch. Not to mention that makes more sense as a safe place for Dovewing to raise the kits than an apartment building. Speaking of which, I like that this book takes place mostly in the city. Not only is it a great change of location. It also really highlights the journey of our main character and how far he's traveled from home and everything and everyone he's familiar with. But it's not a completely bad place. I like that both the advantages and disadvantages of life in the city are pointed out and discussed. But by the time our heroes and heroines return to their homes by the lake, you also get this great sense of homecoming, that they're now once again where they belong at last. It felt like such a great story of personal and physical travel and I loved it from beginning to end!

Characters: While it was a great starting point to have characters I was already familiar with, I loved how this super edition really got me invested in the new characters it introduced. I was equally concerned with both the guardian cats and ShadowClan and wanted things to turn out okay for both of them, at least in a reasonable way. And I was immensely satisfied at how everything was brought together in the end for everyone.

Tigerheart – I already really liked Tigerheart before this. Now that I've read his super edition, I can easily and proudly say that he is now one of my favorite ShadowClan cats and the best leader they're going to have in a long time. I particularly loved how the Erin Hunter team wrote him as a flawed yet honorable and heroic warrior of ShadowClan, which in and of itself is surprising. ShadowClan has often drawing power-hungry cats, and they've traditionally been the proudest of all the Clan. But Tigerheart was a great mix of humility and personal pride. By that I mean, he rightfully wants to take pride in his Clan like any other warrior does. But he wants to take pride in them the right way. It reminds me of when Yellowfang told Firestar when he was an apprentice that in her day, ShadowClan was feared and respected because they in turn feared and respected the warrior code, not because they had a bloodthirsty and power-hungry leader like Brokenstar. And I can definitely see Tigerheart bringing a new golden age to the long-abused Clan. If anything, they need it now more than ever considering they've only barely been brought back from the brink of being lost forever. But back to Tigerheart himself, I loved how even though he does make mistakes, his heart is always in the right place. And it's because of that that you really do feel for him early on. He wants to be there for his mate and their kits but he also wants to be there for his kin and his Clan. He feels this immense pressure and responsibility to keep everything on both sides together. To the point that even though he does leave, you can't totally blame him. And yet even though he does leave the Clans, he will always be a warrior. He shows great strength and even compassion as a leader when he not only helps the guardian cats defend their herb garden, but also convinces them to help Fog and her gang take back their home from foxes, despite how much Fog and her cats have been harassing the guardian cats. Not to mention he proves to be an amazing mate and father. He goes through so much and gives so much of himself throughout his journey that by the time he does become the new leader of a newly-revived ShadowClan, he's totally deserved it. I can't wait to see how they'll benefit from his leadership!

Dovewing – First off, I am SO glad that Tigerheart and Dovewing finally got together! It's great in general though to see her back after her time in the background since her novella. She's definitely matured in the three years since the Great Battle. But she's still the same tough and independent thinking ThunderClan warrior she always was (until now, maybe, now that she's joined ShadowClan). Even if she and Tigerheart shouldn't have been meeting each other, you can tell they seriously love each other. They really are one of my favorite couples in the series. What's great though is that they argue every once in a while, which ironically makes for a healthy relationship of any kind. And she isn't just the supportive mate. From the start, she never hesitates to speak her mind to her mate. When she tells him about the church she dreamed about, and how she knows it's the safe place where she wants to raise their kits, she tells him that she's leaving whether or not she comes with him. And she does! Plus, if it weren't for her persistence and determination to get her dying mate back to the Clans, Tigerheart might not have been brought back to life in time. I also like how she and Tigerheart discuss life in the city. He's starting to get unsettled by it, while she prefers to be open-minded and doesn't mind living there, at least until their kits are old enough to leave. What's great is that neither mate is completely right or wrong. You understand Tigerheart's desire to raise their kits among the Clans, but you also understand Dovewing's viewpoint and how she knows the reception of their eventual return will turn cold once their Clans learn they had kits together. And as I said before in my review for "River of Fire," while it is unfortunate that she has to leave ThunderClan to be with Tigerheart, I appreciate that she wants her kits to know their father and that she's going to stick to her decision. I'm curious to see how she'll adjust to living in ShadowClan. If nothing else she at least seemed to get along well with the ShadowClan warriors they met on the way home.

The Guardian Cats – With this, I'm going to specifically cover Spire (or Spiresight), Blaze, Fierce, Cinnamon, and Ant. To give an overview though, the guardian cats of course look after stray cats who are ill or injured, or offer them a home if they have nowhere to go. I thought it was fitting that they acted that way given that they live by or underneath the church. Not to mention it sets them apart from the regular street cats that often act hostile. I thought it was intriguing that the prologue focused on Spire, given I had no idea who he was or how important he was to the story at the time. He kinda reminded me of Tree in that he's obviously this very eccentric but very important cat (the strange ones usually are). Even if he often looks like he's staring out into space, he proves integral to the story when StarClan speaks to Tigerheart through him, and of course when he saves Lightkit and then sacrifices himself to save Pouncekit. I love that they gave him a warrior name so he could go be with StarClan. Blaze I thought was pretty cute. He kinda reminded me as a page or young assistant, since he often follows Spire around and helps him. Not to mention he's the first to defend his mentor, even after Spire dies. Fierce I thought was really cool. Even if the guardian cats thought of each other as equals, it's obvious she would've made a great Clan leader, even if it took some time for her to take Fog seriously. I'm also glad Cinnamon and Ant went with Tigerheart and Dovewing back to the Clans. While their characters weren't as distinct as the previous ones I mentioned, I did really like them and ShadowClan could use cats like them!

The ShadowClan Warriors With this, I'm specifically going over Sparrowtail, Berryheart, Rippletail, and Cloverfoot. It's good to know that there were cats other than Violetshine and Needletail who realized what a mistake they made in initially deciding to follow Darktail. It was also interesting to find that the bonus manga chapter at the end focused on them and how they coped with their unenviable situation. Even though I'm glad that they had kits – and that they named one of them after Spire – I do kinda pity Sparrowtail and Berryheart, 'cause Needletail was their daughter. And I know it's gonna be awful for them when they found out about the horrifying if heroic end she met. That said, I'm glad that Berryheart's littermates found them. Like Cinnamon and Ant, they weren't the most distinctive characters, but I still really liked them and how they felt like a family bound by mutual love and regret over what they'd done. That said, if that was Rippletail living in the Twolegplace at the end of "River of Fire" – when Alderheart went there to return Velvet's toy and then saw him – I am curious as to how he ended up there, since this book didn't explain it either. Either that or…maybe it was really Fog's brother Streak? It would make sense given he was caught in one of the traps the Twolegs set up. Whatever the case, I would appreciate answers on that.

Various Other Characters – I, like Tigerheart, was concerned about Fog and her cats at first. Still, I really liked that she didn't end up being a straight-up villain, but rather more of an antagonist (which I consider different from a villain). I mean, yes, she did kinda bully the guardian cats, but I also knew she was a hardened cat trying to survive along with her friends. While she wasn't my favorite character, I did feel for her when her brother was captured and when it was discovered that her home had been invaded by a whole pack of foxes. If nothing else, I was glad that she left the guardian cats alone once she and her friends got their home back. I was also glad that at least one of her friends, Tuna, was willing to help the guardian cats with clearing out and trapping the five foxes. Tigerheart's and Dovewing's kits were delightful to read about! I can tell that Lightkit and Pouncekit have great potential as future ShadowClan warriors. And I wouldn't be surprised if Shadowkit becomes Puddleshine's apprentice. I thought Dash, the station cat, was pretty cool. I liked how he guided Tigerheart and his traveling party through the train tunnel, given that Tigerheart – when he first arrived in the city – helped Dash chase off those street cats who were bullying him. Going to the warriors who were part of ShadowClan when Tigerheart left, I'm glad that they recognized his leadership skills – such as when he stopped them from fighting SkyClan over the rabbit Plumwillow took – even as they seemed determined to disrespect Rowanstar. And despite Rowanstar's nearsightedness as a leader, I could tell that he was devoted to his Clan and that he and Tigerheart did love and respect each other, despite their disagreements. It was great to see him among the StarClan cats who gave Tigerheart his nine lives. Speaking of whom, it was fantastic to see ShadowClan cats I loved among them as well! Specifically Flametail, Sagewhisker, and Yellowfang!

Overall: This super edition was an absolute joy to read! It was such a great story about the inner and outer journey of a fantastic main character. Once I finished it, I had this heartwarming feeling that I think I'll remember whenever I look back on this book. I felt it ended on the perfect note and I can't wait to see how Tigerstar II helps bring ShadowClan back to its former glory!

As far as super editions go, this one was a bit underwhelming. I usually expect super editions to be exciting and keep me on my toes since the story is supposed to be important enough that it can’t be told within the arcs. This one wasn’t boring exactly, but not much really happened. This was more of a “slice of life” kind of book than an actual dramatic story that felt like it deserved it’s own place separate from the main series. Sure, it picked up and got exciting at the end, but only within the last two or three chapters. I also noticed a lot of grammatical errors in this and the previous book in the normal arc, and while I understand that even editors gloss over some mistakes, these are such obvious errors and they occur so frequently that they broke my immersion in the story since I had to reread quite a few passages to understand what the line should have said if all the letters were there. It almost seems like the author forgot you need to put an ‘s at the end of words to show possession, since that is the mistake that occurs most frequently. Finally, I found Dovewing really annoying in this book. I was a huge Tigerheart/Dovewing shipper back when their romance first blossomed. Something about forbidden love just really attracts me to it (Bluestar/Oakheart, Leafpool/Crowfeather, etc. etc.). Then when they finally get a four-hundred page book dedicated to their romance, the chemistry is lacking. Tigerheart was adorable but Dovewing made me want to shake her in frustration. She acted selfish and never took Tigerheart’s concerns seriously. They fought over the most trivial things. They were really cute at the end, but throughout most of the book they seemed less like a couple and more like a bickering pair of kits. There isn’t much else I have to say, but I do want to comment on some of the events that happened in the book, so if you don’t want spoilers for this story don’t read the next section.

Lot’s of people forget these books were made for teens/tweens. So they miss the simple pieces to the book. This book showed growth from Tigerheart/star, how he dealt with things like love and his clan, and showed deeper into his character. I enjoy him more then Lionblaze now because he now has this book to push his personality.

It’s odd to have another Tigerstar, but it’s just more pushing him to be better than the first Tigerstar. I’m eager to see what sort of leader he becomes and I’m glad Dovewing (a pretty boring character imo) is happy now in Shadowclan with her kits and family. It’s good to see the story behind Shadowclan falling and growing. They are a hugely underrated clan imo.

I enjoy all the Warriors books, but I enjoyed this one in particular more than others! It was a very unique story and I loved the character developments and the settings.

September 2017 Oh my gosh, I can't even. This book is amazing! I've never been terribly fond of Tigerheart, but after reading this I think he'll make a wonderful leader and be the Tigerstar that there should have been from the start. I'm so glad that he chose to return to life and save ShadowClan instead of giving up and losing his chance to be their leader. Also, I'm really sad that Spiresight died. I think he's one of my most favorite characters in the whole saga now. :3

Tigerheart's Shadow is definitely a great book, especially since I read it all in one sitting. Many plot twists and turns happen, and left me on the edge of my seat. The book can teach you to follow where your heart belongs, and in Tigerheart's case, it was with Dovewing. Leaving the clan meant leaving his family, but he felt as if Dovewing was more important.

i LOVED this super edition. shares so much light on what happened while tigerheart was gone and what was going on in his head. also loved how original this book was and unique compared to the rest of the books in the warriors universe

7.00 on CAWPILE

This book was fantastic. I loved how much the characters had actual struggles and had to face real issues that weren't solved within one chapter. It was really well fleshed out, and the character development throughout the entire book was really great.

im so TORN about tigerhearts shadow, because i really think it's one of modern warriors best super editions. for once it's not another 500 page retelling of someone's entire life, but at the cost of the fact it's practically required reading to understand late AVoS, which i feel like a super edition shouldn't be.

there's a lot to like about this book, and i do like it! there's just a few places where it stumbles that puts it below the better "retelling" SEs like tall and crookeds, and i feel like this is the most obvious example of the erins not really knowing what to do with cats that exist outside of the clans.

the introduction of city cats and the city environment was really exciting, and - apart from a few weirdly explained features (im still not entirely sure what the 'slabs' were, i settled on benches) - the writers did a really good job creating that environment, i loved the idea of the strays having to scavenge, how that differs from clan life, and especially the scene where they go to what i'm assuming is a barbeque? and the thundersnakes! would love to see how the erins would ever handle a plane next hehe.

but that quickly becomes a problem once tiger starts to try and make them more 'clan like'. i wish so, so badly that the narrative had made fog neutral, or even good, just so that tiger could be taught an actual lesson instead of being proven right. i feel it would've made him a fuller character, explaining why he welcomed back the cats that sided with darktail with the new perspective it would've given him. they kind of attempted this with tuna "redeeming himself" and helping with the fox trap, but i wish they'd gone all the way and made tiger actually in the wrong so he could learn from his mistakes.

what really saves this book is the dynamic between dove and tiger. they're - at least to me - what most people /think/ fire and sand are like, and seeing them interact and grow closer over the span of the second half is absolutely adorable to read. pretty sure i found my favourite couple because of this super edition (i really, really hope this gets translated into TBC). there's some strong side characters like spire, and the kits are surprisingly distinct enough, but the rest of the guardian cats are otherwise forgettable.

overall a big fan of this one, but there's some really obvious problems that lower it down to 4 stars for me. pretty much required reading for anyone in late AVoS, but id still recommend it regardless if you're finding the lake territory to be getting stale.

We meet plenty of new characters in this book.

Chapter 9 we are introduced to Fuzzball, Rose and Ajax.

Chapter 13 we meet a Thundersnake station cat named Dash, which he learns is a Thundersnake station is a train station. We also meet the rot pile cats: Floyd, who is the meanest. The she-cat's name is Mae. The other tom is Scrap.

Chapter 14 we meet Ant, who we later learn is part of the guardian cats. There is also Fierce and Cobweb. We also meet Bracken, Rascal, Spire, Blaze, Mittens and Cinnamon. Pumpkin was mentioned but was not there during Tigerheart's and Dovewing's stay. Pumpkin was a stray who had stayed with the guardian cats and taught them the medicine skills.

Chapter 16 Pipsqueak, Dottie, Boots and Peanut are new characters with the guardian cats.

Chapter 17 Marigold's name is mentioned, but not much more of her is mentioned.

Chapter 20 We meet Fog and her gang.

Chapter 21 Growler joins Fog's gang.

Chapter 23 Feather and Scowl are the newest patients for the guardian cats, but not much of them are mentioned either in the book.

As usual, many times there are instances when characters don't talk to other characters about their concerns. They just go on assumptions. Such as in chapter 5 Tigerheart fell unconscious and his dream of unconsciousness he believed he saw what Puddleshine has seen in his vision. Why didn't he go to Puddleshine to talk to him about it?

Chapter 9 Tigerheart goes to speak to Puddleshine about his vision. Only he does not. Puddleshine tells him about his dream and Tigerheart tries to make sense of it even though Puddleshine is telling him what it means.

Chapter 11 Fuzzball asks Tigerheart as he was leaving them to follow the Silverpath if he would take him to meet his Clan when he came back. Tigerheart thought it was a silly idea but never answered him. On top of that, he never does in the end of this book.

Chapter 13 Dash takes Tigerheart to help him with the rot pile cats.

Chapter 14 we are now introduced to the guardian cats.

Chapter 17 Dovewing gives birth.

Chapter 18 Dovewing has her litter of three kits. Two daughters and a son. The first was a daughter, the second a son and the last a daughter. Marigold dies the last night before Dovewing's kits were born. Here I thought maybe Marigold would be one of the daughter's possibly for some reason because why else mention this?

Chapter 19 the names of the kits are given, Shadowkit for the son, Pouncekit and Lightkit.

Chapter 20 The guardian cats group runs into Fog and her gang when they were scavenging for food back in chapter 19. Tuna also mentions a tom named Streak.

Chapter 21 There is a Twoleg gathering every moon. If the kits are two moons old, how come it is only now mentioned of such a feast? This chapter I feel has a few mistakes, that one being one of them. There are words stated like then when it should have been them. This chapter and another chapter, I can't remember also had a lot of mistakes, as if this is where individuals got tired of editing and missed a lot of things.

Chapter 24 a Twoleg takes Streak. Fog now informs Tigerheart that Streak is her brother.

Chapter 26 I am curious to know what StarClan cat is talking to Spire, telling him some cat is trying to reach Tigerheart that he is needed.

Chapter 32 Berryheart has three kits and she named them Hollowkit, Sunkit and Spirekit.

Chapter 34 This entire chapter is dediated to Tigerheart dying. He died from an owl attack in chapter 33 saving Hollowkit. Tigerheart sees his father there in StarClan, now back to his warrior name of Rowanclaw. He never asks how and why this happened. He does make it back to ShadowClan, just not alive, but he wakes up alive there at the Moonpool, now as a leader of ShadowClan. StarClan decided to bring him back to life. Why him? Is it because he is now Tigerstar, and the name will now be redeemed.

Chapter 35 Tigerstar does not get his full nine lives because he supposedly already used one.

The Manga at the end gives you the story of Berryheart deciding to leave ShadowClan thinking it is for the best and how they became where they were, her and Sparrowtail, Rippletail and Cloverfoot.

I was really enjoying the journey portion of this book for once and then like in the middle they ruined it because they just had to have Tigerheart go back to the ways of his predecessors and think that the clans way of life is way better than anything else. It's very tired and just not very interesting to keep rehashing the same journey traits in every travel book. I also just don't enjoy the back and forth that is very very common in this era. Oh are they gonna go do the thing?? op nope they're gonna just think about it.. okay now they're going to go do the thing!! Make up your mind!! Not every character is going to be that way, but they keep writing them that way in this era.

Other than that, I really did enjoy the city elements. I just wish they didn't ruin that.

I absolutely loved this book. I went into reading it with a lot of expectations and fear (because I did not want unmet expectations!!) but for once, it turned out exactly how I wanted. Dovewing has always been super annoying but I think she redeemed herself in this super-edition.

It will be so great to see the change in ShadowClan now that Tigerstar is their leader. And what an astounding leader ceremony/death!! I hope his leadership will bring ShadowClan back to the days when Dawnstar was leader.

While I always expect to be nonplussed by these books, I am consistently surprised by the issues that they tackle. In this case, the story line includes questions of loyalty, love, loss and even death. While I read this to my children (9 & 11) we had interesting and far-ranging conversations. Not a bad deal for one book from an enormous series.
