With friends like these.....

Nina Taylor works hard every day to stay on top of things. She makes lists to help her remember to do everything she needs to accomplish. Nina suffered a "mental breakdown “that almost resulted in the end of her marriage. Each day she attempts to maintain her sanity while raising two daughters and living with her demanding and distant husband. To add to her list of duties, her friend's son is constantly at her home. I would have like more of the back story on her mental health issues which caused such an issue with her husband and why people are acting funny around her at school.

Deja Johnson is a single mother with a troubled past. Her past has come calling and she needs to find a way to move past her former issues. Making her life more complicated is that fact that she is sleeping with a married man, not to mention, things she is doing to jeopardize her job. I'll say it right here, I didn't care for her character at all. She is sleeping with her best friend's husband and has no problem having her friend watch her kid while her bangs her husband? She is described as having a troubled past, that doesn't excuse her and her choices in the present. A lot of reviewers are calling Deja strong, but I viewed her as being weak. Sleeping with her friend's husband, constant lying, having him over while her son is at home, sleeping with a married client of her employer, to me she has very loose morals and extremely poor judgement. Deja was not strong, she was deceitful, weak and willing to use whomever she could to save her own butt.

Nina and Deja are friends, but one night something happens that will threaten the hold Nina has on her sanity and may expose Deja for what or who she really is. Will the stress of the event threaten Nina's mental health, or will it make her stronger? Will the backstabbing be found out? Will someone's true colors finally be seen? To quote a country music song "Somebody done somebody wrong" in this book.

This book deals with a lot of issues including mental health, infidelity, deceit, support systems and secrets to name a few. The reader is aware of what it is going on while Nina is in the dark and trying to manage. It was interesting to see if she was going to "learn the truth" or continue to have the wool pulled over her eyes. Everything comes together in the end. This book proved to be a fast read with a few twists and turns along the way. I would have liked more of Nina and Deja’s back stories. I felt as if I was missing some information that would have helped me enjoy the book more. I found it difficult to like a lot of the characters in this book due to their behaviors and deceit. Overall, this book had solid writing and moved at a good pace. The story never dragged nor did it feel rushed.

I was given a copy of this book from the Author in exchange for an honest review.

Well, if I'm being honest, this book didn't work for me at all. I just found the entire story unbelievable and all of the characters were annoying. I pressed on hoping I'd become engaged at some point but that just never happened. C'est la vie!

There are a lot of positive reviews for this novel so I'm sure it's me and not the book. You may love it!

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Nina Taylor thought her mental breakdown was the worst thing that could have happened. Little did she know her fragile recovery would be tested to its very limits by the people she trusted most and a dark stranger she had never met.

Nothing could have prepared Nina for what she would face or who would betray her in her darkest hours. She tried to be a good wife, she had two wonderful children and a best friend who came along just when she needed her most.

Deja Johnson, a single mother struggling to raise her young son is running from bad decisions, bad luck and a monster from her past. Nina accepted her for who she was and Deja was a rock for the fragile Nina, but there was more hidden beneath the surface. It would be Deja’s actions that would bring Nina close to a relapse and Deja’s past that would add the extra push.

As Nina faces what she assumes are mental blackouts, even her marriage will suffer as her self-absorbed husband fails to provide the support she needs. Alone, scared and scarred by her own past, she is lured into a deadly plot for money and finds herself hanging on by a thread, and like a puppet on a string, she is led into the pits of a living hell, filled with paranoia, dark strangers and the return of a ghost from her own past. The more she leans on Deja for support, the less stable her world becomes and only Deja knows why.

Reading EVERYTHING SHE LOST by Alessandra Harris is like balancing on a tightrope with razor blades instead of a net below, if you fall. This is a psychological thriller at its most dark and devious. Ms. Harris has penned a tale of desperation, betrayal and woven only a fine thread of sanity for her main character, Nina to hold on to. I found myself reeling in anger, my nerves felt electric and this twisted tale had me riveted to every word. Nina is not the miracle poster child for recovery, she is struggling throughout, but she has heart and there is more to her than she even realizes. I liked her, I wanted her to get well, I wanted her to open her eyes as wide as she seemed to open her heart. Deja, wow, there is a well-written character, she is a friend in need, a liar, a desperate mother and in spite of her deeds, she, too was likeable, but far from perfect. I liked her, I hated her, not for her dark past, but for many of her current actions. Nina’s husband, not sure even his brief moments of kindness towards Nina could redeem him in my eyes, but he did seem to be a good father.

Alessandra Harris has set a new bar for drama and strong, well-defined characters that will get under your skin, as you lose yourself in this dark tale. From the first page to the very end, this is magnetic reading, told in powerful strokes of the pen. A highly recommended must read for those who dare to take a walk on the dark side of life and humanity.

I received a complimentary ARC edition from Alessandra Harris. My review is voluntary.

Favorite Quotes:

Stability seemed like a distant location she’d never reach, a vacation she longed for but couldn’t afford.

Sometimes, we have to choose between hard and harder. That doesn’t make you a bad person. It makes you human.

My Review:

Everything She Lost was a tension-filled and angsty story full of intrigue and taut with suspense. I couldn’t decide if the main character was losing her mind or being gaslighted, or a bit of both. Then I couldn’t decide how far-reaching the nefarious scheme was and who was behind it and how many others were participating in the probable diabolical plan. The storyline was maddeningly paced and infuriating well-crafted. While the story held me captive, the characters were provocatively interesting and unpredictable and kept plucking at my curiosity while I concocted various theories. I greatly despised and slightly pitied the heinous and manipulative character of Deja who had made a lifetime of bad choices. Oh that Alessandra Harris is a wily and clever schemer and sucked me right in with her enthralling tale of deceit and betrayal that did not relent until the final pages. Sigh…more, please!

This is a beautifully written book about the power of relationships between family, friends, and partners for both good and bad. It's also a psychological thriller that leaves you wondering through most of the book what's real and what isn't.

There are two primary characters: Nina, whose story keeps referring to a mental breakdown and tragedy that cost her multiple loved ones. Deja, with a difficult family history trying to keep herself and her son's heads above water. Other characters are woven into the tale in various ways and relationships, including romantic partners for both the ladies, their children, and their mothers.

At first, the veiled mentions of Nina losing two people and her mental breakdown without more specifics were a bit annoying - like a whispered secret you're not part of, yet expected to have full awareness. However, the story unfolds like a rose opening, petal by petal, piece by piece. Within a few chapters, I was entirely drawn into the story and the characters, trying to figure out who was plotting against Nina, who was threatening Deja and why, and how it could all tie together and end neatly. I'm surprised and delighted to say that some of my guesses were wrong - typically I'm pretty quick on a mystery or psychological thriller - which speaks highly to this author's skills.

The author was gracious enough to give me an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review - I'm delighted to have found her work and look forward to reading more.

The author gave me a copy to read in exchange for a review.

I thought it was okay. The author did a good job at stringing me along. That's the thing with the mentally unstable characters, you never know where they're going and the author can mislead you at every turn.

Nina's trying to put her life back together after a mental breakdown when she meets Deja, a single mom who's trying to overcome her past. When Deja's past eventually comes back to haunt her, Nina struggles to remain sane and be a good mom but after one horrific evening Nina feels she's relapsing and it could cost them both everything. I mean really, what are best friends for?

I had issues with the book though... my kids will never call the woman who stepped into my home while I was hospitalized with a breakdown "auntie". Not gonna happen. I won't be her 'bestie' either, nope. And please tell me that there aren't really people out there this stupid...

Love the cover!

Nina is trying hard to remain balanced. She had a mental breakdown that nearly cost her her marriage. Nina is glad her husband Rodney decided to let her move back in, so she can be with her two girls again. Her daughters mean everything to her and for them she wants to get as healthy as possible. Even though Nina has doubts about her own mental wellbeing she's trying the best she can. She's lost a lot of friendships, but a new person, Deja, came into her life when she needed it the most.

Deja is a single mother and she's struggling to pay the bills. There is a man in her life, but he isn't the kind she can have a steady relationship with. Deja's past remains a problem and Deja is constantly afraid it will catch up with her. Deja never had a friend and even though she loves her, spending time with Nina becomes incredibly complicated. Deja's keeping many secrets from her friend, but this becomes increasingly difficult. Deja's problems are threatening to get out of hand and they could be a threat to Nina's mental wellbeing. What will happen if Deja can't keep things under control?

Everything She Lost is a beautiful gripping story. After her breakdown Nina has become fragile. Insecurities are making life difficult for her and even the most simple tasks can be daunting because she keeps questioning herself. My heart ached for her. She's a kindhearted, smart and talented woman and doesn't deserve the way she's being treated by her husband and other people in her life. I kept hoping Nina would find some more support from those who would give her the love she deserves and this kept me on the edge of my seat. Alessandra Harris writes about her problems in a fabulous emphatic way.

Nina's friendship with Deja is complicated. Deja is skilled at keeping secrets. She thinks she does what she has to do to survive, but she doesn't always make the right decisions, for herself and for the people she cares about. Alessandra Harris has written her story from both Nina and Deja's point of view and I loved that she alternates between them, because that made it possible to get to know the two women really well and feel close to the story. I was intrigued by the friendship and couldn't wait to find out what would happen to both Nina and Deja.

Alessandra Harris writes about dishonesty, betrayal, mind games and lies in a fantastic thrilling way. She knows how to build tension, while telling an impressive story about two women who don't have an easy life at the same time. I was captivated by Everything She Lost from beginning to end and read the book in one sitting. I loved the surprising twists and turns and really liked the ending of the story. Everything She Lost is an amazing versatile, enthralling and poignant book.

A story with cruel intentions!

This was a very enjoyable story which kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. Whilst a suspense story, it becomes a mystery as to whether Nina’s actions were as a result of her mental health or something altogether more sinister.

The story was relatively fast paced and I didn’t predict the ending, although my suspicions started to become more or less accurate towards the book’s conclusion.

As new to me author, I found that I enjoyed Alessandra Harris’ writing style but the book at times felt more like an account than an actual portrayal of a complete story. Despite this, the story was fascinating and despite the cruelty carried out against Nina, it was a pleasurable reading experience.

"Deja stretched her legs in the tub, wishing she could go back in time to that night. She would pack a bag, take Miles, and leave Kevin. She had no idea where she'd be now if she'd done that, but the threat of Kevin resurfacing and ruining everything constantly hung over her head."......

Nina has been through terrible tragedy. It leads to a mental breakdown. Her road back to a normal life is difficult. She has a husband and two young daughters to consider. Her parents lives have also taken a hard toll on all of them.

Nina’s best friend, Deja, is always around, not necessarily for good reasons. Unfortunately she may have done things that could stop Nina from making a full recovery. Nina's husband, Rodney isn't necessarily that helpful either.

As events unfold and mysterious incidents begin no one is sure if Nina is relapsing. Not even Nina, herself. Is someone following her? Is she forgetting things?

The story was suspenseful and captivating. What happened to Nina? What did Deja do to jeopardize their friendship? There are children involved, along with past secrets. I enjoyed reading as they unfolded and the pieces fell together.

A great story of friendship and betrayal. Lessons to be learned by all.

Thank you Alessandra Harris

When I was approached by Alessandra Harris to review Everything She Lost, my interest was caught. I enjoy reading psychological thrillers. I like being put on edge about events that happen in the book. I like having my theories about what is happening to the main character being proven wrong. Everything She Lost had and I enjoyed it.

Everything She Lost’s main plotline was centered around Nina’s mental illness and her recovery. I have read other books where the main character has a mental illness but it has been glossed over. Or it was miraculously cured. Or forgotten about. Nina’s recovery was written about realistically. She was taking baby steps. For most of the book, it was one step forward, two steps back. Just like in real life and I loved it. It made the book feel more realistic to me. I did feel bad for her during that struggle. The only one that supported her was her father. Her husband was a jerk and her BFF was even a bigger jerk.

I thought Nina’s backstory was heartbreaking. I do wish that her brother’s illness had been addressed up front. That would have helped me with understanding what Nina was going through. Her devastation when he died led to her making some rash decisions. One which included her marriage to Rodney.

Speaking of Rodney, I couldn’t stand him. He was such an opportunist and a pig. He was going to divorce Nina when her breakdown occurred. Then he kicked her out of her house until the money ran out. They got back together but he treated her like a flipping child. To be having an affair with Deja was the final straw for me. I wanted to kick him where the sun doesn’t shine. He was a great father but that was the only thing I liked about him. So yeah, I didn’t like him.

My feelings for Deja were complex. She was a strong woman who had overcome some pretty awful things in her life to get to where she was now. She wasn’t afraid to use her body or her sexuality to get what she wanted or what her boss wanted. I liked her for that. But I didn’t like that she was being blackmailed by her ex to do something that she didn’t want to do. She also didn’t want to have a relationship with Rodney after getting to know Nina better. Even with everything that happened later in the book, she felt awful for doing it.

I loved the storyline about who was stalking Nina. I thought the author did a great job at keeping who it was and why they were doing it under wraps. I did figure out part of it about halfway through the book. But the other half of it, I was surprised by.

I wish that Damien had been introduced earlier on in the book. I also wish that he factored more at the end of the book. But, I got what I wanted in the epilogue…haha.

The end of the book was one that kept me on my toes. Everything was revealed and what happened after the revelations shocked me. I loved the epilogue. Talk about a perfect ending to the book!!

What I liked about Everything She Lost:

A) Strong female characters

B) Great plotlines

C) The correct usage of Nina’s mental illness

What I disliked about Everything She Lost:

A) Rodney. I couldn’t stand him

B) I wish her brother’s illness had been addressed earlier (why he committed suicide).

C) No Damien until almost the end of the book

I would give Everything She Lost an Adult rating. There is sex. Not graphic sex but it is vague enough to understand what is going on. There is violence. There is language. I would recommend this book to anyone over the age of 21.

There are trigger warnings for Everything She Lost. They would be: Child sexual abuse, teenage prostitution, domestic violence, mental illness, suicide (talk of it nothing was described), bullying, and talk of alcoholism. If you are triggered by any of these, please do not read the book.

I would recommend Everything She Lost to family and friends. I would include a warning about the triggers and what they are. This is a book that I will reread.

I would like to thank Alessandra Harris and Red Adept Publishing for allowing me to read and review Everything She Lost.

All opinions stated in this review of Everything She Lost are mine.

I read this author's previous work and was enthralled by it, so when this one became available I was delighted to be able to get stuck into what I thought was going to be super read…I just had no idea how sensational it would be.
The story is about Nina and Deja and it is one that gives real depth and meaning to the intensity and bond that they share as they forge their friendship…but not everything is as it seems, so keep your wits about you. Nina is in for a rough ride.
Nina’s mental health issues have plagued her, her past bleeds into her here and now, her demons and uncertainties have permeated every aspect of her day, her waking hours have her coping with the fact that she has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and for her sleep is something that never comes easy, the weight of her previous breakdown very far from the surface…I couldn’t help but feel broken for this strong woman who was doing everything she could to salvage a life that she believes is hers for the taking, the truth isn’t that simple because those that she should be able to rely on and those that have come into her life and offer their support and friendship are anything but what she needs. The level of betrayal that she experiences from those who are significant to her raised the hackles on the back of my neck, I was livid! How she managed to hold on to an semblance of normality I will never know.
Nina tries to take control of her health in a bid to keep the people she loves the most safe from the pain and impact that her diagnosis can have…she loves her husband and daughters but when it comes to him, I have to say she is a better woman than I am because I could barely find one redeeming quality about her old man, he was totally self-centred and that niggled me…but what he does later…Wow! I can’t say what I felt about him then, because I don’t think it would extend to much more than a whole list of expletives that might get totally out of control!
Deja, well there is a woman that I wasn’t sure what to make of initially, she seemed to be everything that Nina needed, the perfect friend but then again looks can be deceiving and she was dealing with her own sh*t.
But for me, as much as I didn’t ever really get to actually like her completely, I did understand why she was the way she was and why she did what she did. Many may think that she was in an almost impossible situation, but it was one entirely of her own making and one that sent reverberations of devastation to those around her. I get that life as a single mother is tough, but she is not the only person to have ever been in that situation, but Deja made a catastrophic decision when she embezzled a large amount of money from her previous employer because even though she now has a new career, she is being pressured to pay the money back, and the request carries the not so thinly veiled promise that if it is not paid back there will be unpleasant consequences. The decisions she makes in response to that force her into a decision that there is no coming back from, she starts sleeping with men for money…I am saying no more!
This is real life in all its guises, it is brutally honest and demonstrably accurate, it pulls no punches in its portrayal of the pain and impact of mental illness on not only the person diagnosed but also their extended circle of family and friends, I liked that the author didn’t sugar coat Nina’s situation and that she didn’t quickly lift the cloud that Nina feels encased by, anything else would have been a disservice…so my thanks and admiration to you Ms Harris for a job not only well done but for a story that is much needed.
This isn’t a light and fluffy read, it has a lot going on and a lot of it is troubling, from the get-go this will hold you hostage and resolutely refuse to let go. The character development is sensational and the detail on each and every page will steal your breath away.

This is one of the stories that stays with you for quite some time after you've read the book.  In fact, I've already read a half dozen other books and the theme of this book is still fresh in mind...... which is a good thing since I just realized I never provided you with my review of the book.

Today's post is my book review of Everything She Lost by Alessandra Harris.  I had never heard of this author, but when I received an email about the book and read the description, I knew it was going to be a great one to read.  Boy, was I right!

Nina and Rodney are working toward restoring their lives now that Rodney has allowed Nina to move back in after her mental breakdown that nearly destroyed their marriage. She wants to be with her daughters, and Rodney, and for them she wants to get back to being healthy and normal even though she questions her own sanity.  Although she has lost a lot of friends due to the breakdown, her new friend Deja is there for her.

Deja is a single mother trying to make a life for her and her son.  She has a secret past and continues to haunt her and is a problem in her life. She's always looking over her shoulder worried that her past will catch up with her.  In all honesty, Deja has never had a friend and wants to have a friendship with Nina, but due to circumstances surrounding the two of them, this friendship is complicated. Deja must keep secrets from her friend and she's usually very good at doing so. Deja hasn't alway made the right choices for herself or others but she's just doing what he has to do in order to survive.

Throughout the story, I really felt sad for Nina.  Life was suffocating her while she was doing the best she could at trying to recover from her breakdown. Even the simple things we take for granted were heavy tasks for Nina because she doubts herself. While she was kind and smart, her husband, Rodney, isn't treating her the way she should be treated.

When writing about stories like this, it's very hard to share the story with you when I know I might write a spoiler, so I'm going to stop here.  What I'm going to say is get out and pick up a copy of this book and read it.  If you're like me, it'll be from cover to cover as quick as you can, and then you'll spend twice that long thinking about it afterward.

Ms. Harris writes this story from both points of view, so you will learn what makes each of these ladies do the things they do. The story builds and you won't be able to stop turning the pages thanks to the well written twists and turns.  I never suspected the ending and it caught me off guard and at the end of the book, I was very pleasantly surprised!

I can't wait to read the other book written by Ms. Harris, Blaming the Wind.  If it's anything as great as Everything She Lost, I know it'll be a great read too.  Be sure to pick up your copy of Everything She Lost on Amazon.

I was provided with a complimentary advance digital copy of this book in exchange for my review.  It was not required that my review be positive, but in this case, there's no way I could say anything but great things! Thank you Ms. Harris for this opportunity!!

This is an interesting story which deals with the relevant topic of depression and mental breakdowns. The story revolves around Nina, as she struggles to recover from her mental breakdown and keep her marriage from breaking apart. Her husband and the society in general seem to be afraid of her and do not trust her. Nina's main support system comes from her father and Deja.

Deja, a single mom who makes do with what she has, finds herself running from her past and nursing a broken relationship with her mother, whom she blames for everything. What Nina isn't aware of initially is the nature of the relationship between her husband and Deja, both of whom seem to share an interesting camaraderie. We later see how these bonds formed are used all for money while putting at risk the trust placed in one another.

As the story progresses, we are given glimpses into Nina's and Deja's pasts, a comparison of the very different worlds they come from and the kind of lives they lived. At times it feels as though the story is being dragged along for no reason, with minor repetitions with respect to things Deja keeps thinking. This dilutes the seriousness and intensity of emotions and might even cause the reader to get bored. Towards the end, the author introduces a twist in the plot very subtly which most readers may not see coming. This has been well executed, but later on the sequence of events feel over the top.

However, on a serious note, the author brings out the difficulties of dealing with a a mental illness, no matter how small it is and how the people dealing with this are treated. She also emphasizes on the need for a strong support system. This book is definitely worth a one time read mainly in connection to the issues discussed and the way in which people can try to misuse it.

This book was not what I was expecting, in a good way. Nina Taylor is someone that has had to deal with her close brother committing suicide, her guilt over the suicide, her broken engagement, her mental breakdown after the fact, her husband almost divorcing her, her husband going behind her back and having an affair with a woman that would pretend to become her best friend, and so much more. What she has had to go through in this book is something that could turn anyone crazy. The guilt over her brother's suicide overwhelmed her so much that she had a mental breakdown. Her husband never really loved her before but he really didn't love her or try to pretend to love her after her breakdown. This caused her to spiral more.
The way the author allows her readers to get inside Nina's mind, to see her mental health firsthand is something I have never seen in a book before. It's something that helped me realize the dangers of mental health but also to realize how alone it is. She thought her husband was cheating and since he denied it, it made her spiral. But, he was. Other things that happened that people told her was just in her mind, but it was real. Her pretend best friend and her crazy ex-boyfriend created a plan to make Nina and everyone she loved think she was going insane. It almost worked. It was so close to working. Until Nina found out herself. This story is beautiful. This story is something everyone should read.

I was given this book free for the review from Net Galley.

Everything She Lost is a story about family, friendship and mental illness. Family and friends should be able to help someone who has had a breakdown but in this book, you aren't sure if they are helping the main characters recovery or working to make her relapse.

Nina is working very hard on her recovery - well except for those secret shots of alcohol that she drinks in her closet to help her get through her days. As the book begins, she appears to be losing touch with reality again - notes are sent that she didn't remember sending and flowers are delivered that she didn't remember ordering. The reader is very unsure just how stable she is. Her husband, Rod, is absolutely no help and keeps putting unneeded pressure on her. Plus he is sleeping with her best friend - if you can call a friend having sex with your husband your best friend - but Nina has no idea that the affair is going on. Deja is a single mother trying her best to escape from her past and to her credit fells bad that she is sleeping with Rod.

This is a very well written book about mental illness and recovery. I liked Nina but really did NOT like Deja or Rod. Even though Deja was trying to better herself, she had no idea what friendship and loyalty meant in the real world. This is a good book with interesting twists and turns and a surprising ending.

Thanks to the author for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.

This covers a multitude of serious topics from mental health, pimps using young girls for prostitution through to families and relationship with substance abuse and infidelity.

A wide range of matters given careful and realistic treatment by the author in this book about a mother, and her struggle to get back to ‘normal’ after a mental breakdown where she lost everything - her job, house, husband and kids.

Alongside this is a ‘friend’, Deja, who is a single mother, with a well hidden ‘bad’ past and trying to do the right thing for her son.

Both main female characters have mothers who struggled to raise them due to alcohol and mental health problems. Is the circle going to be completed and take them both down the same way as their mothers ?

Strange things start to happen and Nina is led to believe she is either going mad or having another breakdown and she starts to decline again causing more family issues.

There are lots of twists and some are easy to discover, others not quite so. It makes for a good read.

I was lucky to receive an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

"Some Secrets Should Be Buried Forever"

This is an intense, tearful story about two women, who become friends. Nina Taylor has previously had a mental breakdown and is still plagued with dreams and forgetfulness. She's been diagnosed with schizophrenia. She is afraid she is heading for another meltdown but does not want her husband Rodney and her two loved girls to suffer along with her. Her new friend, Deja Johnson, is a single mother of young son, Miles. She had stolen thousands of dollars from her previous employer who is demanding payback in a threatening manner. She works for another woman who is an event planner ... but mostly weddings. This will soon change as Deja tries to make extra money by providing sex to wealthy men. She also has an affair with Nina's husband. But it's been a secret. This is a little depressing to read as the reader can't help but think of some hurtful memories This is a psychological drama at its best. The story is exceptionally well written and drew me in right from the beginning. Highly recommended for strong minded women.

I received an advance copy of this brilliant book, for an honest review, and I am very happy that I did. This is the story of two women from different walks of life who are drawn together through either fate or misfortune. Nina is an educated and affluent young woman, the mother of two young daughters, who is recovering from a breakdown. Deja is a strong and streetwise woman who would do anything to provide her young son with a good life. They meet at their children's school and become friendly. There begins a story that will leave the reader unable to put the book down.
It has everything a great story should have: Humor, angst, mystery, terror, and a satisfying ending. I couldn't quit reading. I was inexorably drawn in from the first page. The characters are are very well rendered. They are real. I know and have known these women. The children are very like my own. About the middle of the book, I was pretty sure I knew what was going on. Boy, was I wrong! Great story. Great writing. Great fun. I can't recommend it strongly enough.

I was contacted by Alessandra Harris. She asked me if I would be interested in reading her book "Everything She Lost" in exchange for an honest review and I am glad she did contact me. I really enjoyed this novel.

Nina was a character that I really liked. She is struggling to keep herself together as well as hoping to pick up her life with her husband after suffering a breakdown. Nina's struggle to feel "normal" and healthy. It was a bit painful to see how she was treated because of her mental illness.

I wanted to like Deja but she was not the easiest character to like. I did understand some of her motivations. She wanted to be free and she wanted a fresh start. That being said she is definitely not someone I would want for my best friend. Nina, however is the kind of best friend you would definitely want.

This is a fantastic, well written novel, a thriller full of twists and turns with a main character that you really care about and root for. Alessandra Harris has a new fan! Do yourself a favor and pick this book up!

Everything She Lost is a psychological thriller. Nina is fighting a mental illness. She had a breakdown, has followed the treatment plan, and is doing better. Until someone starts messing with her causing her to believe she is breaking down again.

I saw where this was going; I could see where the story was headed. For me there was no surprise as to who was messing with her yet the knowing did not stop me from enjoying the story. Alessandra Harris wrote a story that kept me turning pages, reading chapter after chapter even when I could hardly keep my eyes open.

Both Nina and Deja, the best friend, are strong women. I really enjoyed how they were portrayed. They both had histories that haunted them, families that were not available to them, and still held onto their lives working for a future they both wanted.

I’d recommend this to anyone who likes strong female characters and a psychological thriller in one great book.

Is a nervous breakdown hitting rock bottom? Or is the recovery going to be a constant challenge? Can the simplest of responsibilities and task help keep a solid hold on a woman’s sanity? Can a kindhearted and fragile soul find comfort in her relationships or is she at risk of being a doormat? That’s the questions at the heart of Everything She Lost by Alessandra Harris.

Nina Taylor is in trying to recover the life she lost and is grateful her husband, Rodney, has allowed her to come back home to him and their two daughters. She needs the support of friends and finds her new friend, Deja Johnson, to be a lifeline. Or is Deja’s own challenges harming Nina’s grip on reality?

An intriguing look at life, betrayal, relationships, secrets, and survival with a poignant twist. An honest, if sometimes dark look at what it means to be human. One of the best books I’ve read so far this year.

Thanks to Net Galley, Alessandra Harris, and Red Adept Publishing for the Arc. Opinions are my own.

Ultimately a novel about the interweaving of the lives of two very different women with completely different upbrinings. The two are brought together by catastrophic events and the changes that result from the friendship, the affect one human being can have on another's life is the true message of the novel. The mystery however will keep you turning pages to the end! Is Nina headed for another breakdown or is someone pushing her? Is she in danger? Can Deja help Nina and herself? How will the two women overcome all the obstacles life has thrown their way? Alessandra Harris has definitely written a book worth your time on all it's levels!

This was an amazing read! It was full of so many twists and turns, I just had to keep reading. Just when I thought I knew who was good and who was bad, something would happen that would put my mind in a tail spin. All I can say is with friends like Deja, who needs enemies. I believe anyone who likes to read exciting stories that constantly keep you wondering and guessing, then this is the perfect book for you. I was fortunate to receive an ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review. I rate this an easy 5 stars!

Many thanks to NetGalley, Red Adept Publishing and Alessandra Harris for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Awesome story filled with suspense. Nina and Deja are friends with very complicated lives. Nina had a mental breakdown and almost lost her family and Deja is a single mother who struggles to pay her bills. Things begin to happen that makes Nina wonder if she’s relapsing. This was a very good read.

This story is about how frail the human mind can be and how hard it is for some to maintain to keep it. Of course there are others that possibly don't want that person to "keep from losing her/his mind". It's those people you really have to look out for. A great story.

Rating: 2.5/5

The synopsis for Everything She Lost caught my interest because of the mental health theme as well as my ability to relate to being a single mother. I had the opportunity to read and review Alessandra Harris’ debut novel Blaming the Wind and quite enjoyed it.

Back with another diverse contemporary fiction, Harris has thrown in a bit of suspense with her second release. Overall, I liked the concept of the story, which was ripe with deception. It definitely kept my attention throughout however, I had problems with the execution. There was so much going on with the plot that it didn’t quite piece together smoothly. The ending was quite rushed, leaving me with questions that could have easily been resolved.

Although this book fell short for me, I would still recommend Alessandra Harris as an author, especially her novel Blaming the Wind.
