The author showed how daring it would it be to just flip a switch and travel back in time. Of course, all that's needed is just your regular run-of-the-mill time machine. With compliments of Kathleen Watson, it was delivered up in style. The narrative was well-written and held me prisoner to the page. The storyline took many twists and turns to conclude with a stupendous, not-to-be-missed storybook ending.

Watson delivered a compelling perspective for what might occur when turning back the hands of time that I had never considered before. Divulging any more information on this theme would border on becoming a spoiler. For the meantime, I'll have to leave you drooling in suspense. The luck of the draw was on my side when this novel fell into my waiting hands. Winner.

Beth Nielson, age 26, is temporarily living with her older brother Russ only until her new apartment is ready for occupancy. He'd been an amateur inventor since his early days as a kid. Through the years, he toiled with his father at building a dream to end all dreams - a time machine. Though their parents had died in a fatal automobile accident nine years previous, Russ carried on the work. Alas, the momentous day had finally arrived. The final touches to the machine had been completed. So he hoped.

The plot had taken a major twist. A serial killer has been stalking and murdering women within the vicinity. Unfortunately for Beth, she fit the killer's profile to a tee. Perfectly sighted within the crosshairs, she was next in line to be savagely butchered. It was only a matter of time.

One desperate night, the deranged monster had barged his way into the home. Fleeing for her life, totally unprepared for the onslaught, Beth jumped into the time machine and pushed the throttle. In a blinding flash of light she was gone, whisked away to another period of time. Not only did it actually work, it saved her life.

The next thing she knew, she found herself sitting in what appeared to be a barn. A family of four: father, infant son and two young girls discovered her unwelcome presence. Feeling woozy from the time travel, she was helped inside their house. It was then she learned the date - September 4, 1860. Her jaw hit the floor.

Initially, she failed at trying to explain the odd appearance of the machine to the bewilderment of the family. She became flustered to discover that worse yet, it would not start; now stuck in the 19th century mere months away from the start of the Civil War.

Faith dictated that her brother would build another time machine and would come searching for her. But in the meantime, she'd have to call this farm, home. At first, as expected, she was looked upon as an intruder and granted only a week's stay. After that she'd be on her own. That wouldn't do. How would she survive? Besides, her brother'd never be able to track her down. She was in the proverbial pickle.

The children took to her right away. Their mother had died just a couple of years earlier. Their father was not so fast to accept her unannounced arrival but that slowly began to change as she stole the children's hearts as they did hers. She began to find a place for herself within their family. It was everything she had ever wanted - ever hoped for.

After a couple of weeks Beth was doing chores and fit in like one of the family. They had become to form a close-knit relationship. There was no hurry now to return to the 21st century. Then one night came a familiar blinding flash of light that emanated from the barn.

She had a pretty good idea who was behind that. As suspected, her brother exited the barn and rushed into his sister's open arms. The moment of truth had finally arrived. She was forced with a decision that secretly, she hoped she'd never have to make. Stay with a loving family in the mid-1800s or return back to life as she knew it.

"A Tale of Time Travel" it says on the cover, and it is – a very good one. I have read many time-travel stories – it is one of my favourite genres – and in this book, as Beth Nielson and her brother Russ and others travel backwards and forwards through time, the author focusses clearly on one or two aspects of time travel, of the paradoxes involved, better than I have ever seen it done before.

But it is not only a time-travel story. It starts in present-day Minneapolis with a serial killer stalking Beth, and in odd chapters throughout the book we return to the killer and see it through his eyes as he plots the trapping, torturing and killing of his next victim – and they have all been slender, blue-eyed blondes like his own sister, who was his first victim, and like Beth herself.

And then there is a lot of gossip, soap opera style – Beth's co-workers , her brother – and when she travels back into the past, to 1860, the family who take her in. We get to know them all, to feel part of each group, to want to know more, to know what happens next, not just to Beth but to all of them.

The little farming family back in 1860 is particularly well done and reminded me of a similar family back at roughly the same date, just before the Civil War, in one of Robert Heinlein's Lazarus Long novels ("Time Enough For Love", or "To Sail Beyond The Sunset", I don't remember now). He, too, is a gossiper (Heinlein, that is, not Lazarus Long!) wanting us to feel at home with every family, every group, and it is that, that feeling of belonging, which makes the reader want more. At the end of this book, Kathleen Watson writes "the saga continues", and I am sure it will. The serial killer is dead and gone (or is he? One can never be sure given the paradoxes of time travel) but every reader of this book will want to know what happens next in 1860 (the Civil War is looming), in the present, and in 2110, where Russ has gone, and 2115, the year he saved Zena and brought her back with him to the present.

Loved this book! A fast read, not because of the content, but because of the excitement that continually builds. There are three different storylines going on at the same time that parallel and intertwine into each other, keeping you on the edge of your seat. The characters are well thought and fleshed out that you can't help but fall in love with the heroes and even hate and boo the antagonists. Kathleeen Watson did a great job with the technical and scientific side of time travel telling as well--not just your cliché "oh, I fell asleep and suddenly woke up in another time". She made it plausible and yet easy enough for even a non-techy like me to understand the quantum physics of it all. Overall, a fun read, and I plant to go back for more!

Sci-Fi? Crime? Historical Fiction? Romance? It is impossible to categorize this book! You will travel back to 1860 (one scene is even before that) and forward to 2115. Plus you'll get a little apocalyptic with covid 19. You'll never be bored with this one!

The art of writing time travel can be tricky if the author doesn't know how to weave the threads together. I was hesitant to read the book for this reason. However, the author masters the art of time travel. She reveals the emotions of the characters as they step from the machine into a different time and place.
Beth's brother, Russ, completes the time machine that he worked on with his late father when Beth needs to escape from a serial killer. She walks into the 1860's. A farmer and his children see her and take her in. Daniel sees in her someone to help raise his children. Beth considers a romantic future with children and family.
The story has twists and turns, romance, science fiction, and mystery. It has an expected ending, leaving us with the burning question of whether Beth follows her heart or returns to the future.

Great story, it really kept me hooked throughout. After a while, I found it hard to put down because I wanted to read about what happens next. I usually am not a fan of romance, but I didn't mind it at all with this story. I really had an awesome time reading it. I highly recommend this book!

The author of the book was doing a signing at the American Legion in Forest Lake, MN where I currently work and where the book is based. She briefly gave an announcement about the book and a short description. The book sounded interesting, but I was working and busy, so I hoped I have time to pick it up before she left. I was able to take a few minutes and talk with Kathleen about writing and local history and purchased the book. As I did, a guest of hers asked me to write of review, “even if I hated it.”
The book is about a young woman named Beth who has just ended a bad relationship, works in a mortgage office with some friend but the new boss is making her life difficult and believes she is being stalked by her ex. She is close with her brother and stays with him on the weekends. Her brother, Russ is an inventor and he is just finishing a time machine which he calls The Scorpion. Beth indulges her brother but doesn’t understand when he tries to explain how it works.
One night the stalker follows her home and she tries to escape by jumping in The Scorpion. She finds herself traveling to 1860 and staying with a young family, who recently suffered a loss while she waits for her brother to find her.
I started reading this book to kill time before and event not knowing if I was going to like it. I went home, stayed up to the wee hours of the morning and finished it. It has many genres in one story. It has Sci-fi, romance, and mystery. Several chapters are written from different character’s point of view, so it keeps you reading to find out what happens next.
There are a couple of editing mistakes, in which I’m sure that will be addressed for the next edition and it left me with several questions which I hope are talked about in the sequel, if that happens. For example, are Beth and Daniel related?!
I really enjoyed this story and I will be keeping an eye out for more from this author.

I love books that mix genres. With Destination Unknown, you have a blend of thriller, science fiction, and historical romance, making the book accessible to many kinds of fiction readers. How often do you find a genuinely frightening serial killer tale that also involves plausible time travel? The author pulls it off with ease.

Beth is stuck in an unrewarding job and just got out of an abusive relationship. Unfortunately for her, she has the “look” that a serial killer is obsessed with and he methodically stalks her. Her brilliant and nerdy brother Russ has built a time machine (the mechanics of which are really cool). One night, the serial killer has cornered Beth in her brother’s house and her only means of escape is the time machine. Beth lands in 1860, and the story really takes off as she struggles to adapt to the time period and be accepted by Daniel, a farmer who has lost his wife and is raising three young kids. Meanwhile, Russ is travelling to the past and future in search of her. And the serial killer continually plots how to get to her.

The characters are all believable and appealing: Beth, her coworkers, Russ, Mrs. Knutson, Daniel, and the children. Even Theodore, the serial killer, is given a backstory that explains his twisted mind. And I loved the details of how the time travel works, the vivid depiction of rural Minnesota in 1860, and how the Beth’s host family reacts to the 21st century objects she has brought with her. The author delights with beautiful prose and a true gift for storytelling. I loved this book and, best of all, she left room for a sequel!

Received this book free in consideration of an honest review.

Beth Nielson's life isn't going well. She thinks her mortgage company job is about to end making her future uncertain. He violent ex-boyfriend who is stalking her, and there's a serial killer in her city who is killing women who look just like her.

Beth decides to spend more time with her brother, Russ, in their old family home. Russ is an inventor who dedicated his life to building a time travel machine; he's now completed it and is ready for experimentation. Beth hates the contraption and wants no part of it; after his first trip Russ returns and is unwell for several days. Between the possible consequences of time travel and Russ's illness Beth is even less thrilled with time travel.

Unfortunately, the serial killer is stalking her and when he threatens her, she is forced to use the time machine. It sends her to a farm in the year 1860. With a broken-down machine, a skeptical farmer and three children who need a mother Beth adapts while hoping her brother will find her.

There's a certain amount of tension with the serial killer lurking in the background obsessing about his chance to kill Beth, her brother's attempts to locate her and the growing relationships she develops with the farm family.

There were a few anachronisms I found a bit distracting; Beth mentions a zipper in the farmer's trousers (zippers weren't invented until 1893) and some of the farmer's dialogue used terms he wouldn't have used during that time period.

Overall I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

Such An Intriguing and Suspenseful Tale!

Destination Unknown is a finely crafted literary work that leads the reader through interesting new sub-plots and unknown turns. It’s an intriguing and suspenseful tale, flawlessly weaving drama and conflict into multiple time periods, creating a cohesive, well stitched storyline. The descriptive introductions to the main individuals of the story, as well as gentle unfolding of their traits and backgrounds, provides strong character development, effectively drawing the reader into their lives.

As the book opens, Beth, the heroine, is living a dull, tedious life and inadvertently becomes embroiled in a chase she never expected, leaving her in a very precarious place. Her brother, Russ, is desperately trying to find and rescue her from a nearly impossible situation. The predicament places us in the middle, unsure whether we actually want Beth to be found. The author has done an admirable job of allowing the reader to empathize with the lead character while still positioning her in a strong role.

With many books, new scenes and eventual outcomes are predictable and expected. Destination Unknown is a rare exception, with each page leading me to discover which path the story would take. It not only drew me along at a steady pace, eagerly wanting to uncover each new direction, but left me expecting a follow on book. I’m certainly hoping the author has a sequel in the works.

Destination Unknown has several layers in the story which make it a very enjoyable read. Beth Nielson has a boss like Miranda Priestly from The Devil wears Prada in a mortgage company that seems to be on the verge or crumbling, she has an ex boyfriend that's has acted crazy, there's a serial killer on the loose stalking and killing people that look like her, and her brother whom she loves dearly has built a time machine. The time machine turns out to be a good thing, allowing Beth to meet some interesting people while escaping dangers in her contemporary life.

The characters are well drawn, and the intricacies of the time machine were engaging (I want one now!). In this story about time travel, the reader is encouraged to believe that even though it's not real, it very well could be. The facts from the future had me spellbound, and the past was very well thought out and vividly described.

Beth, the main character is endearing enough that she won't be forgotten.I'd recommend this book to anyone that likes time travel, light romance, adventure, or just a good story. I would put the recommended age at 16+ due to very minimal foul language and a few romantic scenes, but don't let that stop you from reading this fantastic book that takes you places you wouldn't imagine.

This was such an exciting read!

By what we’ve learned from reading and watching nearly ALL sci-fi stories, time travel can be dangerous. Alternate lines can be created. Your existence can even be erased. Time travel can be far more dangerous than altering timelines. However, Russ’ perseverance unlocks a secret from decades before (and after) he was born.

Beth finds herself barely surviving while the world around her quickly implodes. Between the change in management at work, her ex-boyfriend with a restraining order, a serial killer roaming the area, and an intelligent brother creating wild inventions, Beth only wants to see the light at the end of her tunnel. Honestly, I agree with her.

From homesteaders to futuristic gangs, bridges are being built to unite the best of all worlds.

I love this storyline. I love the writing style. Each character had her own unique purpose.

I look forward to reading more by this creative author.

Beth Nielsen is stalked by a serial killer. In order to escape, she takes the time machine her brother Russ invented and ends up back in 1860. Daniel is a widower with three children who are shocked when Beth and her machine materialize in his barn. The children grown attached to Beth and eventually, so does Daniel, but her Russ is searching for her to bring her back where she belongs. The killer is also still looking for her.
This is a quick read and interesting in the historical aspects, though I thought the author made the dialogue for Daniel and his community too modern sometimes. I didn't care for the serial killer parts which made me wonder if this was more historical fiction or a crime novel. I admit I was confused by Beth and Daniel having the same last name and living on the same property; it made me wonder if she was becoming involved with one of her ancestors, but that question was never answered.

This is time travel at it's best! I thoroughly enjoyed Destination Unknown and watching Beth find her soulmate in 1860.

While running from a serial killer, Beth crawls into her brother's time machine, which he calls The Scorpion. It's fairly simple to operate and Beth soon finds herself in a barn in 1860. Scared and bewildered, the widowed farmer wants her to vacate his property. The Scorpion is malfunctioning and Beth's only chance of returning to the future lays in the hands of her brother. He has to build another time machine.

As the pieces begin to fall together and Beth tells the farmer she's from the future and has items with her to back up her claim, they began to fall in love. There are several more twists that I don't want to spoil.

When the time comes, will Beth chose to stay in 1860 or return to the future?

Give this one a try! You won't be sorry.

This is an entertaining story about two siblings, Beth and Russ Nielson, being the first an unsatisfied personal at a mortgage company and Russ being an inventor trying to construct a time travel machine. As Beth is being pursued by a maniac serial killer, she finds herself forced into the time travel machine and lands in the barn of a farmer, Daniel, and his family, in the year 1860. There she gets used to the simpler and happier life they lead, until Russ comes to take her home.
This it's a embarrassing book, full of suspense, including love stories, that catches the reader's attention from beginning to end. The characters are well described and very lively presented.

This is an intriguing tale about time travel and a serial killer. I would have never dared to mixed these subjects myself but the author seems to have made them work.

The novel concentrates on the time travel aspects of the story and in particular the transportation of the heroine back to the mid nineteenth century. She is stalked by the killer who has a list of female victims behind him. The description of life in the USA rural 1800s, especially the people she encounters, is particularly good.

The narrative falls down a little with her projections of the future but despite this I found it a good read as the plot kept me turning the pages right until the end.

I have written this review in my head over a million times and keep forgetting to write it down. Now if only I a had time machine like in the book but alas I don't, so here goes. I really liked this book but it wasn't my favorite. The story is fantastic but I could of done without the serial killer background but that was my preference so don't let me taint it for you. I love historical fictions so was super excited to get this book. The story is very creative and enjoyable. I read it in a few hours because it was that good. Give it a shot you won't be disappointed
