Nineteenth century Ireland. Blacksmith Gavin O’Malley is a bitter man, with a heart as hard as the iron he forges. He wants his life back—the one that was stolen from him the day his wife died in childbirth—taking their firstborn son with her.

When Aislinn Deirbhile, an immortal, shape-shifting fae, arrives on his doorstep, he knows he’s in luck. For Aislinn can give Gavin everything he’s been missing: A devoted-seeming wife in the image of his beloved Mairead, and children who are sure to outlive their father. Now, all he has to do is find a way to keep her—without losing his immortal soul in the process.

But Aislinn has an agenda of her own. On the run from a vengeful fae lord who’s vowed to either make her his or end her existence, she knows the iron that allows Gavin to take her captive will also keep her pursuers at bay. In order to put herself permanently beyond her enemy’s reach, however, Aislinn will need something more. She’ll need to win Gavin’s heart and convince him to willingly part with a piece of the very soul he’s trying to save.

Summary: Aislinn Deirbhile is a shape-shifting fae who is on the run. She is being forced to choose between marrying someone she despises, or facing the end of her immortal life. She decides to hide in the one place that a Fae cannot enter without aid – a building that is bound together by iron, the one substance that renders Fae powerless. In the 19th century, this means living with a blacksmith.

Gavin O’Malley is the unsuspecting human blacksmith who provides assistance to Aislinn. Gavin is a bitter, lonely man. He lost both his wife and child in childbirth after a very short marriage. His wife, Mairead, had been frigid and selfish, and made Gavin promise on her deathbed that he would never be with another woman. Gavin has kept that promise, but his resulting craving for intimacy is destroying him.

Aislinn is everything that Gavin has ever wanted, but his guilt over the promise to his deceased wife prevents him from acting on his feelings. When Aislinn shape-shifts into Mairead’s body, the temptation is too great to resist. He convinces himself (or perhaps Aislinn convinces him) that intimacy with Aislinn while she is in the form of Mairead is a loophole in his vow to Mairead.

Over time, Gavin realizes that Aislinn is his true love, and she feels the same about Gavin. But what will happen when the long winter ends and her betrothed comes looking for her? And even if they survive that confrontation, which is highly unlikely, how can a mortal human and an immortal Fae build a life together?

Review: While I did think that the premis of this story was creative and unique, it didn’t hold my interest throughout the entire novel. It started out really daring and a little crazy, but I got bored after a while. Once the shock factor wore off from Aislinn taking Mairead’s shape in order to seduce Gavin, it became repetative. I wanted more from the book than Gavin’s internal wrestling over his promise to Mairead. Toward the end, when the enemy comes calling, it finally got really interesting again.

The ending of this story was completely unexpected. I’m not going to give away any spoilers, but I will say that it took me a while to decide if I liked the way it concluded. Not all surprises are good surprises. After some thought, I decided that I was satisfied with the ending. It was definitely the most emotional part of the book, and the moment when I finally became completely invested in the characters. I guess I just wish that the connection had happened sooner.

I do think that Forte is skilled in writing the erotic scenes. She does a very good job of making them steamy and intense, while still making them feel emotional, real and natural. Its a combination that few authors are able to achieve. If you are a fan of erotic writing, I would recommend checking out Forte’s collection of PR erotica. While I don’t think Iron is the strongest in the bunch, it is still better than most of what I’ve seen in this genre.

Dodie's Review

Gavin O'Malley has had a tough time the past several years. He wife died, and since her death he has ceased to see the joy in life. He's turned into a bit of a recluse, avoiding all the people in his life. One night, a beautiful woman shows up on his doorstep seeking shelter for the evening, but in books as often in reality, things are not always what they seem. Aislinn is a fae princess. Gavin is not only mortal, but a blacksmith. As everyone knows, or should know, fae can not abide iron. Aislinn is counting on using the iron to keep her pursuers at bay, but hopes that she won't become trapped by the iron that keeps her safe. Gavin is trapped by a deathbed promise made to his dead wife. Aislinn is trapped by the iron, by her pursuers, and by the rules that bind all fae. While Gavin did end up saving Aislinn from her pursuers, really Aislinn saved Gavin from the pain in his life.

Gavin was a dreamy hero: physically strong, handsome, naive, straightforward. Aislinn was a good counterpoint to him. She's strongwilled and, worldwise. Due to the inherent differences in their natures, they continually misunderstood each other, and caused difficulty in their relationship. Eventually, eventually they found their happily ever after, and I was very happy for them.

I loved this story. It's absolutely precious. PG Forte's book kept me enthralled (yes, enthralled) till I finished. I will read this story again and again. It will never get deleted from my files.

If you haven't read it, I recommend it highly. It's wonderfully written, rich in imagery, beautiful in style, fantastically erotic and a lovely, lovely, romance that has a happily ever forever ending.

Five Stars all the way!!!

Merged review:

I just finished Iron and I loved it. It will go on my keeper shelf to be read many times again.

What a lovely story, full of mischief, male pig-headedness, beautiful erotic love making and a glimpse of the Fae in Ireland.

Oh, this was nice.
