The characters, themes and conflicts of the Quixote provide the perfect platform to promote authentic communication and critical thinking in the upper level Spanish classroom. However, the language of the Siglo de Oro can be an insurmountable barrier for many readers, including educators. This student textbook provides historical information, narrative techniques, lists of characters presented, themes and key words before they begin to read each chapter. While reading, vocabulary glossed in comprehensible Spanish appears in the margin opposite challenging words. Cultural references and proverbs from the work facilitate a deeper understanding. The engravings of Gustave Doré and art from the era reinforce new learning. Each chapter contains one or more checks for understanding and ends with activities to build vocabulary and assure that students can retell the story they just read. Designed to meet the needs of AP classrooms, the text includes the required chapters 1-8 as well as chapters 10, 17 and 74. A companion Teacher Support and Resources is available to teachers. This textbook has been funded by COERLL, the Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning UT-Austin (), the Center for European Studies ( and the U.S. Department of Education (Title IV Grant P229A140005).
