Somehow, I managed to start reading Riley Curtis' Dawn Devon series with the prequel novella (probably came from one of the many free giveaway sites); it was a natural step to grab the first book in the series, and a pretty easy step to get to this one. But even though it was published in 2018, there was no next step to take - and that was really disappointing.,

I'm a sucker for heroines with some badass qualities. Devon is a former boxer, rejected by her family because she was also a drunk and let her brother be killed because she wouldn't intervene, and now living hand to mouth in Florida. In the prequel, she's aboard Captain Joe Black's boat when a charter goes very wrong. Captain Black is killed. She falls into her "see, another example of why I'm no good" rationalizations. Subsequently, she inherits his boat, a guardian angel of sorts (his lawyer) and the good will of many who knew him. But figures from that first fiasco reappear in both novels.

Characters from the first full novel also appear in Gray Dawn. Her first real friend emerges (Megan); a Coast Guard captain reappears with a vested interest in her; a supposed hero becomes a betrayer and a general schmuck becomes someone to be rescued. And the bad guys come back (until she kills off a couple).

So why only 3 stars? Well, first, there's the apparent lack of interest by Curtis in developing the series. Many of the authors I follow are jumping to push out two books per series per year (and one at a minimum) - and here we are, two years and no third book. Next, I'm left with the impression that Curtis has let the story run the writing. Instead of a well thought out main character going through changes, it's as though he had a stick figure and is still trying to determine how to flesh her out. One of the reasons I wanted #3 was to read about her past life - unveiled at the end. So until and unless there's a followup, I reserve any enthusiasm for the series.

A gripping tale.

I just finished reading this book which drew me in right from the start. I loved it! It has A strong female who seems to attract trouble without looking for it. There is a lot of action and many unexpected twists along the way that kept me glued to the pages till I reached the end.
