b>Welcome to Sugar Maple . . . Sugar Maple may look like your postcard-perfect Vermont town but that’s where the similarity ends. Our librarian is a beautiful Norwegian troll. The funeral parlor is run by a family of vampires. The Sugar Maple Inn is owned by Fae while the werewolves keep our hardware store well-stocked. For centuries we have been home to house sprites, witches, selkies, spirits, shapeshifters, and elves. And who could forget Forbes, our lovable Mountain Giant?I’m Chloe Hobbs, the half-human/half-magick owner of Sticks & String, the most popular knit shop in New England, where your yarn never tangles, you always get gauge, and the knitter sitting next to you only comes out after dark. And did I mention that I’m almost thirty, single, and with no prospects in sight? My friends and neighbors have been casting spells to help me find Mr. Right but so far their efforts have been all wrong.Who'd have guessed I'd find my soulmate in Luke MacKenzie, a cop investigating Sugar Maple's very first murder? Bad news is he's 100% human which could spell disaster for a normal future with a paranormal woman like me--in love, in danger, and in way over my head.So here we are, two years and one baby daughter later, about to get married. They say nothing good comes from unions between mortals and magicks, but Luke and I are determined to prove them wrong. But a beautiful antique ring may hold the key to a promise that could tear us apart forever. Praise for the Sugar Maple stories Bretton launches her new series of magic and murder with an enchanting, lyrical masterpiece that should make its way to the bestseller list in no time. Brilliantly weaving the town of Sugar Maple with that of its inhabitants into one living, breathing entity, this novel captivates readers from the first page. With vibrant, multidimensional characters, including the town itself, Bretton pens a memorable romance that combines knitting, love, magic, and self-discovery. Romantic Times Book Club– 4.5 stars – TOP PICK Tongue-in-cheek humor lifts this weird but fun hybrid, part knitting cozy, part paranormal romance, from romance veteran Bretton (Just Desserts). After a classy female tourist drowns mysteriously in an icy lake in remote Sugar Maple, Vt., the Montpelier authorities ask Boston homicide cop Luke MacKenzie to investigate. As Sugar Maple's temporary police chief, Luke soon notices the village's odd ambience. Originally a haven for witches who fled the Salem witchcraft trials three centuries earlier, Sugar Maple is now home to witches, vampires, fairies and trolls. Luke is also attracted to Chloe Hobbs, the half-human owner of the knitting shop Sticks & Strings, who must find Mr. Right if she's to preserve the spell that sustains the town's unusual residents. As sparks literally fly between the two, Chloe's "magickal" side stirs into life. This series is excellent and unique. In every way, it contradicts things I do not do. Breaks between authors enhance enjoyment. I stop at two works per year. If I love a series, I defer the treat more. I only want real books, affordable by shopping second-hand. I prefer paranormal missions, to crimes. When I find such rare gems, they had better be serious mysteries: not “cozy”. I loathe supernatural types: vampires, werewolves, shape-shifters; as well as romance, Barbara Bretton’s veteran genre. I am fair but choosy. Three stars are a common grade.
The background topic is knitting, one talent I do not share with my dearest Mom. She loved sewing and knitting. To our sadness, she died one month ago. This is my first review, since the most major event of our lives.
Spirits, cats, and magic enticed me to buy four trade paperbacks: new. From the first paragraph, Barbara’s hilarious narrating was like no other. Her work combines humour, mystery, and high fantasy. Sex forgoes “cozy” designation. This series proves that writing quality outweighs interest areas. The ghouls are family-oriented, my stomach ripples in laughter, and every adventure rivets me. Heedless about savouring these, I devoured them from November 27 to December 27, 2013.
One short story was solely made as an e-book. I will not buy non-physical items. In April 2015, I won a challenge prize, limited to an e-book. I learned Kindle is a free PC download and inhaled that story too.
The series ceased for six years and has been renewed! I received two for my birthday in November. My history conveys my appreciation of “Enchanted: The Wedding Story”. I granted every book five stars. I had a few critiques but enjoyment stayed high. I am saving the sixth, content that a seventh was published.
I can't believe I've never read Barbara Bretton before Enchanted. This is the 5th book in The Sugar Maple Chronicles. This book is definitely one that has a continuity thing going on, however, I didn't have any issues with the story, except for having a longing to read the other 4 books.
In this installment of the Sugar Maple Chronicles we approach Chloe and Luke's wedding and all the craziness leading up to it. If you haven't visited Sugar Maple before (like me) the town is a haven for paranormal types. Chloe, the owner of Sticks and String yard shop is part human and part magick. I absolutely adore her. She's cast a spell over the town so that non residents of the paranormal variety can't break on through.
Chloe really has a lot on her plate, trying to keep her soon to be in laws from discovering the truth about the town. On top of it all her future mother in law has found a distant cousin of Chloe's and has invited her to the wedding.
Wendy is a fabulous character, and she really feels like a great fit into Chloe's world, even though she's a mortal.
All of this should make for a very happy time leading up to her wedding, but a box containing memories of her parents and a strange ring start a strange string of events that started just before her parents died and an arrangement they made for her marriage.
All these things come to a head in this book, as Gavan is sent to stop the wedding.
I loved the characters in this book and I loved how things weren't all that they seemed. Chloe's daughter stole the show in all the scenes that she was in, and there were some pretty good laugh out loud moments with her.
Gaven is a perfect almost baddie, but by the end of the book, there's a certain mortal that you really hope he finds happiness with in a future book.
I really loved this story, and I want to go back and read the series from the start now.
We have finally arrived at the much-anticipated wedding of Chloe and Luke. Sugar Maple is all abuzz as mystical creatures and regular humans come together to prepare the town of Sugar Maple. Of course, most of the humans don’t really know who they are consorting with but that’s for the best. As the time until the magical (pun intended) day dwindles, Chloe’s stress level has hit the ceiling. On top of the normal pre-wedding events, her well intentioned soon-to-be mother in-law drops a bomb that shakes Chloe to the core. Chloe also finds a ring, much too large for her dainty fingers, in a box of memories. Said ring, when placed on her finger magically cinches down to the point that she cannot remove the jewelry. Then it starts to glow and blink.
Something sinister is about to descend on Sugar Maple and Chloe and Luke may never see their happily ever after.
I enjoyed Enchanted: The Wedding Story. As with all stories in the Sugar Maple series, there are complications, generally involving the magical folks. This story, however, has complications involving both the magical beings and the human beings. The book was fun to read and had very suspenseful and emotional parts. A long ago made promise threatens to derail the marriage between Chloe and Luke. Chloe learns something from her mother-in-law that has Chloe both yearning and scared. Both situations are emotional and realistic.
This book is well written. The plot is smooth and flows evenly and there is humor and conflict. All of the characters are well developed and enjoyable. I highly recommend the series and that you start from book 1. There is enough backstory provided throughout the book, but everything would make more sense to the reader if the series was started from the beginning and read in order. Lovers of the paranormal will enjoy this unique story and setting.
I love that Barbara Breton has continued the Sugar Maple Chronicles. Luke and Chloe are getting married. Bunny, Luke’s mom, has a surprise up her sleeve for Chloe, and there are secrets from the past that are about to be revealed. I enjoy all the characters in Sugar Maple and love the informal story telling style from Chloe and others perspectives. This just leaves me feeling happy and I love it when a book does that.
Chloe and Luke are getting married. New people are showing up. Bunny is being a bit of busybody but it works out for the good. New fae and the past will crop up as Chloe learns about her past. An excellent well written story with bits of humor from her baby, Laria. I recommend this book and series!
Book 5 builds on life's challenges the Sugar Maple way. Emotionally heart rending, it binds success to each and every character participating in doing the right thing. A very successful tale.
Of the whole story 2 excerpts personally touched home the most.
“I'm moving out." I thought he was kidding. I wish I could say I had one of those seen-it-coming moments but I didn't. I thought we were happy. I thought our family was like every other family out there in America: sometimes happy, sometimes not so much, but rock solid just the same. Yeah. I know. You never think it can happen to you until it does…. The thing is I liked being married. I liked the routine of it. The things that drove other women completely nuts were touchstones for me, reminders that I had a man who loved me and a place in the world where I belonged.”
And deeper into the book - “I thought I missed everything about him, but it turns out that what I miss most is being married. I liked knowing I was in this life with someone who had my back.” “Even if you didn’t have any chemistry together?” “I might rethink that part of the equation next time.” A twinkle appeared in her eyes. “A few sparks might be nice.”
I get the sense that Bunny may be the undoing of Sugar Maple as a sanctuary with all her meddling and unwillingness to leave personal things alone.
Perhaps the Aubry line holds magicks no one realized as well.
It's time to get married and what's better at a wedding than a second groom. Chloe and Luke are surprised to find that Chloe does have a relative when her second cousin Wendy shows up the day before the wedding at Bunny's invitation. And it that's not enough, there is a whole new group that wants to join the Sugar Maple community.
Enjoyable book in a good series set in a magical town.
Years ago Chloe had been promised to Gavin by her parents to insure if so strong happened she would be cared for. Was her wedding doomed as Like and his guests were frozen? Find out why and how it turned out. A story you won't want to miss.
Poor Chloe, thinking all she had to worth about leading up to her wedding was her zealous in-laws and friends.Great twists abound as well as some new characters.
These books are super quick reads and extremely clever. No one expects this to be earth shattering literature with underlying themes, plots, and extensive character development. BUT.... in between thought provoking, book of the year type stuff that requires you to think... this fits the bill.
