This gets one extra star because Tanaka-san is really relatable. The author's mini-side notes regarding her personality are just so relatable. Otherwise, the story runs the same as the usual shoujo mangas.

"A Side Character's Love Story" is a slow burn romance...maybe a little too slow. I'm not a Romance girlie but this is so slow with so much neurotic thinking and awkwardness. Is the word for this "cringe"? I don't know. I bought Vol 2 at the same time as Vol 1 so I will see.
The art and panel composition excellent and I loved the interstitial blurbs where characters favourite things are shown (like favourite type of dumplings.)

I think the best word to describe this book is "harmless." It's cute and sweet but not too, Nobuko is relatable in the manifestations of her anxiety, and the whole thing just a little bit dull, honestly. My only real complaint is that Nobuko's anxiety behaviours are described as "quirks," which downplays their very real impact on her life. That makes me call this a 2.5, rounded up for lack of other major issues.

Honestly I didn’t know that this manga would be short but i still enjoyed it. I like this type of slow burn romance bc it’s so cute to see tanaka and irie’s interaction! I think I prefer it this way bc that means the plot just gets better..🤭

Cringey at times but cute
There are enjoyable moments and there are cringe-worthy moments that mostly sprouted from Nobuko Tanaka's personality, she's a shy and timid young woman. I find the premise clichéd, simple, and basic with slightly dull edges. Nonetheless, it's pretty enjoyable. And quite refreshing on a seinen manga shelf. (Right?! I was convinced it was a shojo manga considering the texture of the series, but technically it isn't.) I'd like to see how these characters will bloom, so I'm going to check the future volumes too.
By the way, I love the play on the main character's name. Translation does ruin the uniqueness of a foreign book (at most.) Was this Goethe? I'm not sure anymore, but world lit does say so. Haha.

The only reason this doesn’t have two stars is because I try to save that for something I actively dislike. This is a full two and a half star manga, however, because it commits the cardinal sin of any book - it’s boring.
The premise is that somebody is so painfully shy that they consider themselves a side character in their life and then romance blossoms. Minus the book title, there’s absolutely nothing here that you haven’t seen in a dozen other titles.
I liked the little facts that the author interspersed throughout, but this is such a slow paced and dull read. As a sufferer, I feel bad picking on a book about social anxiety, but this is so flipping slow and not that interesting. Since the art can’t save the day either - it’s serviceable but not exemplary - I’m not planning to stay with this one.

Karakter özelliklerini, olaylara karşı davranış şekillerini öğreniyoruz. Gerçek adı aslında Nobuko fakat çalıştığı markette patronu Mobuko diyince herkes adını Mobuko olarak sanıyor. Utangaç kızımız çalıştığı marketteki Irie-san'a platonik olarak aşık.
Tanakasan tatlı bir kız, fazla utangaç insanlara soru sorarken bile ya da konuşurken acaba onları rahatsız ediyor muyum diye sürekli düşünüyor. Bence hayatta bu kadar çok utangaç olmamamız lazım. Benim en sevdiğim söz "Hayat cesurları sever" umarım ilerleyen bölümlerde Tanaka cesur olmayı öğrenebilir.

El amor de Mobuko es una historia sencilla pero tan dulce que me ha atrapado desde las primeras páginas.
La historia nos habla de Nobuko, Irie y sus compañeros de trabajo. Nobuko es una chica introvertida que trabaja en un supermercado y poco a poco se va enamorando de Irie, uno de sus compañeros de trabajo.
El primer tomo gira en torno a Nobuko, a su personalidad, sus sentimientos. Nobuko siempre se ha sentido como un personaje secundario en la vida, piensa demasiado en las cosas hasta el punto de no dormir, le da vergüenza hablar o relacionarse con la gente en según que situaciones, y es algo con lo que me siento identificada. Creo que por eso he disfrutado tanto con ella, conociéndola poco a poco. También he disfrutado con Irie, que parece que siempre está pendiente de todo para ayudar en lo que pueda, además de Abe, Kaneko y Shinozaki y sus interacciones a lo largo de la historia, ya sea dentro o fuera del trabajo.
El amor de Mobuko es mucho más que una historia de amor, es un manga de lazos de amistad y laborales. Estoy deseando ver como evolucionan los personajes (sobre todo Nobuko, que ya se ve que da pequeños pasos) y las relaciones de amor/amistad que surgen/existen.
Y el estilo de dibujo de Akane Tamura es precioso.
Una historia dulce con unos personajes adorables que os recomiendo mucho.

This was a cute volume, very slice of life in a way. But I found the main character's "quirks" leaning way too much into anxiety without it actually being treated as such, and honestly it was rough being so worried and anxious in her head the entire time. So. Nice, but not for me.

Ahhhh, I really liked this! This manga so far reminds me of a cross between Komi Can’t Communicate (only much more serious) and After the Rain (without the age-gap attraction), and I mean that comparison in the best way. It’s just really realistic with its portrayal of anxiety and shyness too (as well as relatable for its background of including retail work). I cannot wait to see what happens next!

Content/Trigger Warnings: Depictions of anxiety
Actual rating: 2.5 ⭐
This was... fine? Truthfully, this is probably one of the most harmless and innocent manga I've ever read that doesn't involve animals. Which that can be a good thing and it can be a bad thing. For me, it was a bad thing. The premise of this story is a bit cliché, but it was still sweet and wholesome in some moments. However, the more I read, the more I just didn't care about the characters, the story, or anything. There's really no reason for me to care about characters in this manga especially when there's very little character development or anything thing that causes me to root for them. Granted, this is only the first volume, but also the first volume should have a way of hooking you and making you feel invested in the story, the characters, setting, etc... and that just never happened for me. I also got some secondhand embarrassment from certain situations and that's something I just can't deal with in my books. Overall, I won't be continuing with this series because it's just not for me. I do recommend this to readers who love slice of life reads and are looking for a manga that's more vanilla. This is probably a manga I'd introduced to a middle schooler, honestly.

I wanna say this was like a 2.85-3 stars
This was cute. I like that the fmc is considered more of a plain introvert (even tho she's pretty asf), and the male love interest is calm, quiet, and respectful. I think I enjoyed this most in the beginning though and then I started to get a bit disconnected with it, and less convinced of the potential romance tbh. One reviewer on here said that it was maybe too slow?? Which I honestly wholeheartedly agree with. BUT, the chance of me reading volume 2 is very high, and I'm in a reading slump so I'm a very harsh critic rn. So, I'm gonna read volume 2 and see if it helps the series grow on me, cause I really want to like this series!! But yeah, overall this was just a very peaceful, low stakes, and slow paced romance manga
P.s: I didn't really like how the manga was constantly putting in Nobuko's quirks like "she overthinks" or "she hesitates to help people" or "she's worried that she's bothering people when she isn't". Like okay girl we get it. I don't really see these as "quirks" either. That's just being an anxious person

There is shy, there is painfully shy, and there is Tanaka!
I'm unsure how this young lady can leave her house, as she is cripplingly self-deprecating and filled with anxiety.
And like many a socially awkward young woman, she is in love, but has no idea how to handle the budding friendship, much less her feelings.

I'm plain meek and don't handle attention well. If my life were a play, someone else would be cast as the lead while I'd be the unobtrusive supporting role standing odd to the side.

Me encanto, very cute 🥰. Mobuko es una chica de edad universitaria y es súper tímida (hasta llegará a decir que muestra muchas señas de ansiedad social aunque todavía no han hablado sobre eso), y trabaja en un supermercado pequeño cuando no está estudiando. Ella suele pensar que es más como un extra en las historias de amor de otras personas, pero por fin a llegado su turno de ser la protagonista 🫶. Me gustaron los personajes y las personalidades de todos. Definitivamente continuaré la serie.

This story is a quiet one that focuses on a shy girl and her anxiety especially when it comes to interacting with others. It's such a wholesome read but I can understand how others would find the story boring, but I personally enjoyed it. It's relatable in many ways and I found myself easily rooting for everyone in the story.

tbh i only read this because i wanted to collect a badge from ku, but i did enjoy this, though there were some cringe moments and second hand embarrassment that made me turn off my phone. but i will continue the series.

There’s nothing in this manga you haven’t seen before, however, it was sweet and has room to grow so i’m giving it a 3 star rating in the hopes these characters will grow on me in later volumes. Seeing as I already have the next 3 volumes purchased.

This was so cute. I now have a new favorite.
I relate to Tanaka so much. The introvert life experiences in this volume are so real, but she has a heart of gold. I can't wait to see her grow in her relationship with Irie in the next volume.
