I recommend reading this book only after careful reading of more recent books on Adolf Hitler, beginning with Ian Kershaw's two volume biography. "The Mind of Adolf Hitler" is best seen as an artifact of the Second World War and the psychological theories of the era. As such it should be read with a skeptical eye. While there are some interesting insights about Hitler's character in the first chapter of the book, many of the conclusions Langer comes to have not held up with time and later scholarship. Some of the most lurid speculations Langer explores are based on some very thin threads of evidence, or no evidence whatsoever, and are asserted with far greater confidence than they deserve.

This is the secret psychological report written in 1943 for "Wild Bill" Donovan of the OSS, which correctly predicted Adolf Hitler's degeneration and eventual suicide. This is a fascinating work of insight into the warfare and the life of the Third Reich's evil genius. With uncanny accuracy. Loaded with commonly known details about the life of Adolph Hitler as well as some lesser-known and even surprising facts about why and how he became who he was.

I found the sexual theories difficult to sustain ... but the initial thoughts regarding Hitler's Christ fantasies were intriguing and I may use that analysis in my in-progress novel ...

Em 1943 em meio à segunda guerra mundial o psicanalista Walter Langer foi incumbido pela Cia de traçar um perfil psicológico de Adolf Hitler para tentar descobrir quais seriam seus próximos passos na guerra.Seu estudo permaneceu secreto até 1972 quando foi publicado e se tornou um bestseller.
Para fazer essa análise o Dr Walter entrevistou várias pessoas que tiveram contato com Hitler inclusive o médico da família.
Nessas entrevistas o Dr Walter concluiu que Hitler era um fraco se disfarçando de valentão e um fracasso no papel de Fuhrer. Ele era "provavelmente um psicopata neurótico beirando a esquizofrenia".
Nesse perfil psicológico o Dr Walter previu que Hitler iria se suicidar como realmente aconteceu. Hitler se matou em 30 de abril de 1945, no bunker com medo dos Russos que se aproximavam. Dois anos antes, Langer escreveu que "à medida que a Alemanha sofrer derrotas sucessivas, Hitler se tornará cada vez mais neurótico" e, com toda a probabilidade, vai tirar sua própria vida.
O rígido treinamento para usar o vaso sanitário imposto por sua mãe quando ele era uma criança, os antecedentes familiares problemáticos, seu masoquismo fundamental, suas perversões sexuais e amor à pornografia, suas depressões: e sua insegurança permanente e senso de missão a ponto de dizer que era um escolhido e onipotênte - tudo isso foi incluído no manuscrito que o Dr. Langer entregou ao Escritório de Serviços Estratégicos em Washington.
Dr. Langer disse que ele foi capaz de descobrir como deveria ter sido a infância de Hitler onde três dos seus irmãos morreram, e por que ele estava constantemente lutando com uma crise de identidade - uma luta pessoal que quase arruinou o mundo inteiro.

I read this in college, in a course I took with a student of Fritz Stern - then it was of great interest, now it was rather weak. The kindle issue uses a lot of untranslated German, and the Freudian basis seems dated and a bit artificial.

The title truly explains the content of this book. The content leaves no detail out when explaining the inner workings of young Adolph's perverse mind. I could honestly not put this book down, every page left me wanting to read Mr. Langer's new discovery or explanation for previous findings. From startling accusations of him being a homosexual to his completely secret Oedipus complex, this book truly delivers with formerly secret information on arguably the most dangerous man in history.

Dystopias past present and future seem to be what I am focused on. We all know about the lies, the scapegoating, and the anger over fabricated grievances by a speaker who knows how to tap into them. Tell me something I don't know.
This is a report that was written in 1943 in an attempt to pscychoanalyze Hitler in order for the OSS to gaslight him. [Let's hope our NATO allies are taking notes]. And while the author of the report concedes that it is very difficult to do proper analysis on someone who is unavailable to answer probing question; they were able to piece a lot of things together from interviews with his associates and Mein Kampf itself. As the author explains, although almost nothing in Mein Kampf is factually true, it provides great clues to Hitler's personality and his hangups.
This is especially true of things that are repressed from childhood, which come out as things people say over and over. In the case of Hitler, "rape," "incest" and "excrement" seem to come up a lot in reference to his enemies, the Jews. And, like many other documented cases who exhibited similar symptoms, Hitler was almost certainly into "water sports" probably with his niece who was found dead in his apartment. [Like a certain president who repeatedly says he wants to date his daughter?]
It also attempts to answer that musical question, "How did someone who was apparently so indigent and slothful, become the Chancellor of Germany in three short years?" It is of course, complicated. In foreward written in 1969, the author even says, "Hitler in Vienna was like a 'hippie' because all he wanted was to do his art and not work." And weirdly, the early Hitler actually did remind me an awful lot of Lorenzo St. DuBois in The Producers. It made me wonder if Mel Brooks had seen an early copy of this report.
If it sounds far-fetched, the author correctly predicted the most likely outcome for Hitler out of many. Like, A) he would be captured; B) he would flee into exile, C) he would commit suicide.
BINGO!!
An added bonus is the afterword describes how Hitler's plans for his Wagnerian funeral did not come to pass. After the people tasked with burying him couldn't because they did not have the right shovels, they aborted their mission as the sound of allied bombs grew closer. They were forced to flee, leaving their Fuhrer's corpse uncovered next to a cement mixer for the allies to find him and conduct an autopsy.
Not exactly as satisfying as playing soccer with Mussolini's head must have been for the Italians, but that is what I call the most hopeful tale I have read since 2025.

Wow! A deep psychoanalysis of Adolf Hitler written for the OSS during the latter part of WWII. An afterword by a historian written years later concludes that this analysis was pretty accurate. The book was a best-seller in 1972 and it seems obvious that many of the findings found their way into popular culture. One example, Hitler used to stick his little finger in his mouth, as mimicked decades later by Dr. Evil in the Austin Powers films. Full of historical goodies like that.

this book is very intresting and has a lot of new information. i was surprised about most of the sruff said in this book and this analysis is going deeper than youd like to know this guy but it is worth it

This is a real page turner. Langer was a psychologist commissioned by the U.S. government to write this report on Hitler while the War was being fought. It appeared in 1943. For this reason it is very interesting -- what did they know about Hitler then? This gives a wonderful snapshot.
Its also necessarily flawed -- we know MUCH more about this beast now than we did 60 yeasr ago. Most of Langer's insights have been incorportated, no doubt, into later works. Even the Afterword of this book lists dozens of significant factual errors. Fascinating nevertheless.
Its greatest flaws are the psychoanalytical presuppositions that are its foundation. Langer is a Freudian and he packs the book full of highly speculative, arbitrary psychobabble. Much of this now looks even more dated and silly than it must have at the time. (As so much of today's trendy pyschological subjectivism will look in 50 years). It is just so arbitrary. "Hitler is typical of so many children that were potty trained too early, thereby needing order and structure in their relationships...." Most of this stuff is about as credible as phrenology.
In any case, a VERY good read. Certainly not the place to go as a reference tool, or as the only book on Hitler. But as long as its taken with a truckload of salt, it is very insightful.
Its also necessarily flawed -- we know MUCH more about this beast now than we did 60 yeasr ago. Most of Langer's insights have been incorportated, no doubt, into later works. Even the Afterword of this book lists dozens of significant factual errors. Fascinating nevertheless.
Its greatest flaws are the psychoanalytical presuppositions that are its foundation. Langer is a Freudian and he packs the book full of highly speculative, arbitrary psychobabble. Much of this now looks even more dated and silly than it must have at the time. (As so much of today's trendy pyschological subjectivism will look in 50 years). It is just so arbitrary. "Hitler is typical of so many children that were potty trained too early, thereby needing order and structure in their relationships...." Most of this stuff is about as credible as phrenology.

In 1943, assisted by colleagues, psychoanalyst Walter Langer produced a report about the psychology of Hitler commissioned by the O.S.S. In it, the fortunes of war having turned, Hitler's suicide is rated as most probable.
An afterword to the book outlines evidential material not available in 1943 and corrects some errors made by Langer while generally praising the effort.
Personally, I enjoyed the first half which is basically Hitler's biography. The second half involves putting the data through the Procrustean mill of psychoanalytical theory. This I found somewhat offputting as I don't subscribe to it.

Bevat sommige interessante inzichten en feiten, maar is voornamelijk een voorbeeld hoe niét psychoanalyse toe te passen. Dikwijls vergezocht, interpretatief en weinig onderbouwd. Waarschijnlijk ook grotendeels Amerikaanse propaganda. Het nawoord is echter een zeer waardevolle toevoeging.

This book came to me from a member of our Bible study - she paid $1.00 for it.
It is a treasure.
The book is well done - surprisingly so. We - or at least I have - focused n Hitler and his hatred of Jews.
The book points out that Hitler was beaten regularly and very hard by his father - he ended up hating his father and love his mother - who spoiled him - dearly.
He found his mother and father having sex one night and felt betrayed by his mother.
According to the author, this led to Hitler replacing his mother with his "Motherland - Germany". Interesting to note that Germans talked about their Fatherland, whereas Hitler referred to Germany as his Motherland.
He had some curious sexual interests as well, though this was not a large part of the book.
Book is a keeper if you are interested in this maniac and how he got where he did and his make up.

ABSOLUTE GARBAGE and PROPAGANDA. Fascination with Hitler’s persona continues to purposely be presented to prey on the modern mind and shows no sign of abating. It was a hit piece in many ways but specifically three ways. First was to discredit everything Hitler wrote himself in Mein Kampf as lies made up by Hitler to make himself appear as some sick mentally ill individual who had a horrific self-hating complex, secondly to discredit how advanced the German war machine was, and thirdly, to lie us into WWII as early as the mid-1930s by making Hitler out to be some crazed man child who hated the world and was the personification of evil for unspeakable things done to him in his youth. I have read psychobabble, but this trash takes it to a new level of psychobabble trash. It was so bad and outright predictable that I couldn't even finish it. AVOID it AT ALL COSTS.

A dry read, as are most psychoanalytical assessments to a layman I would assume. An interesting subject, but the book is, admittedly, reaching in that its subject (Adolf Hitler) is unavailable for proper examination, so much of what is presented is pieced together from a wide variety of sources that range from somewhat reliable to far-fetched. I wouldn't recommend this, to be honest I read it out of self-obligation, and because the library was closed on the day I was looking for a new book to begin.

Achei bem incomoda a maneira como eles generalizam as características das mulheres para "justificar" ou "comparar" com as do Hitler e dizer que ele era afeminado.
Segue o trecho a qual eu li e imediatamente abandonei o livro:
"Seu sentimentalismo extremo, sua emotividade, sua atividade ocasional e seu choro, mesmo depois de se tornar chanceler, podem ser considerados manifestações de um padrão feminino fundamental (...)"

Muito interessante, principalmente pela forma como é dividido. Cada capítulo apresenta uma perspectiva diferente para analisar a personalidade de um dos maiores monstros do século XX: acompanhamos como ele mesmo se enxergava, como era visto pelo público, por seus comandados, dentre outras visões. Gostei, apesar de entender que o livro seria mais bem aproveitado se houvesse um maior conhecimento da biografia de Hitler e, também, de conceitos da psicologia abordados superficialmente no texto.

Tanto o autor quanto as outras pessoas, seja vivendo de dentro ou de quem assistiu de fora os grandes acontecimentos que se partiu deste cenário de extrema opressão e poder centralizado ao estado, sente curiosidade e anseio de conhecer o encarregado de comandar e conduzir atos que marcaram a história da humanidade, o Adolf Hitler (Chanceler do Terceiro Reich ou Fuhrer, como era chamado pelos seus seguidores), ele foi o maestro da Alemanha nazista, a nação temida por judeus, negros, homossexuais, pessoas com algum tipo de deficiência ou quem não eram considerados arianos puros.
Nesta minuciosa análise psicológica, podemos encontrar um Fuhrer de uma maneira não tão divulgada, da sua pessoa por trás de seu perfil de autoridade máxima, enaltecendo suas fragilidades, medos, defeitos e os motivos de seus atos conscientes e inconscientes, tudo isto é colocado a conhecimento do público a fim de entendermos como uma pessoa aparentemente saudável e psico e fisicamente pode causar um dos episódios mais marcantes que a sociedade já vivenciou, o genocídio de milhares e milhares de pessoas que se enquadravam nas características vistas acima, e com os ânimos já exaltados por conta da guerra, serviu somente para acender ainda mais a chama do caos iminente.

Algo curioso é que, uma das crenças imutáveis na cabeça do Hitler foi a ideia de que seu público naquela época era como “mulheres”, quando nos referimos a submissão de uma figura superior, mais forte que te dita ordens e não há outra opção a não ser ceder à elas sem questionar. Era assim que o chanceler via as massas e foi assim que esses seus seguidores altamente alienados replicavam seus ideais e mostravam suas faces sombrias.
Pode ser que algumas partes e relatos vistas no livro sejam um gatilho para pessoas emocionalmente sensíveis a certos conteúdos, como por exemplo, a árvore genealógica perturbadora de Hitler. O pai patriota, bêbado e super agressivo que se casou com sua sobrinha, que era 23 anos mais jovem que ele. Esta tinha problemas ovulatórios e sofreu três abortos até gerar Hitler. Fruto de um milagre, ela o mimou e protelou como se fosse sua vida, e o autor mostra pontos importantes e impactos no tipo de caráter que nele se desenvolveu, decorrente a essa infância problemática.
Sobre a impressão passada ao leitor do intuito da criação deste livro, trata-se somente de uma apresentação de forma bem detalhista a pessoa que foi Hitler, coisas que foram fundamentais para que quem leu, despertasse nele seu Eu-critico, para entender a complexidade do funcionamento da mente do Fuhrer e o motivo de seus atos bárbaros e desumanos. Porém, acredito que os motivos vão além disso, mesmo que os textos não transmitam tons acusatórios e de imparcialidade para o lado do ditador, a pretensão também é de aniquilar qualquer que for a espécie de justificativa às ações de Hitler, como sensatas ou necessárias, porque na obra o autor às racionalizam e posteriormente às expõem, os fatos e todas as barbaridades demonstradas, para todos que estão em sã juízo entenda que Hitler tem elevado nível de psicopatia, e é mostrado que não apresentava nenhuma empatia ou remorso por ter realizado o atentado ao direito à vida de milhões de pessoas como o Holocausto e outros massacres conduzidos por ele.

At the height of the Second World War, Allied intelligence services grew increasingly interested in the personal life of the German Führer, Adolf Hitler. The British Special Operations Executive (SOE) spent months developing an elaborate series of plans to assassinate him. The American Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which evolved into the CIA, had similar thoughts, and commissioned Harvard psychologist Walter C. Langer to do a full psychological profile of the German dictator. This short book is the result of his efforts.
Langer and his team worked over the course of five months, interviewed people who knew Hitler, read everything they could get their hands on, producing in the end this remarkable work. It should be said at the outset that it is a deeply flawed work, as they were not able to meet Hitler face to face, and relied on much rumour and hearsay. They were also constrained by a rather strict Freudian interpretation of Hitler's life and motivations. Langer, for example, is absolutely certain that Hitler witnessed his parents engaged in sexual intercourse -- only that could explain several features of Hitler's personality, he believed.
Some of his conclusions might strike us as odd today. For example, he is certain that Hitler was quite "feminine" and that the toxic masculinity of the Nazi movement and regime was his way of over-compensating for this. As proof of his femininity, Langer cites "his gait, his hands, his mannerisms and ways of thinking". Hitler was also characterised by his "extreme sentimentality, his emotionality, his occasional softness and his weeping". These conclusions led the OSS to consider some rather bizarre plans to bring him down (which Langer does not discuss).
But Langer's usefulness to the OSS and its legendary founder, "Wild Bill" Donovan, can be seen in his predictions and recommendations. 3.9/5 -- Pretty good psychological study on Hitler. I thought it interesting the sections into which Mr. Langer broke up the book: Hitler as the German people know him; Hitler as his associates know him, etc. Surprisingly, this was the first book I've ever read on him, outside of textbooks. I will surely read more in years to come, but I think this was a decent start... what drew me to it was WHEN it was originally written. I wish it had been released closer to when it was written in 1942, but if I was alive in 1972, I would have purchased it immediately, as I would have been (and still am, to a certain extent) endlessly fascinated by the extreme, violent, complex, irrationally hateful, charismatic tyrannical leader of the German people.
I recognize that there are some aspects to Langer's study that are a tad outdated or slightly off-color, but most of what he theorized or concluded about the mental makeup of Adolf seemed very close to accurate, and thus helpful in understanding him and his wildly evil actions.
I enjoyed most of this book, even if it took me 2 years to read (life is different after a first child is born, lol). I chose to forego the afterword by Robert Waite, as I think at some point I'll pick up his work on Hitler-- I've read that it is quite good. I liked and appreciated much of 'The Mind of Adolf Hitler'. It put several things into perspective. I recommend it to anyone wanting to dig deeper into the nuances of the psyche of one of history's worst human beings to ever gain power and influence.

I don't normally read books like this but I am glad I did. The name of Adolph Hitler has now become synonymous with pure evil - and for good reason. He was a psychopath, megalomaniac, and as the warped leader of the Nazi movement in 1930's Germany, he enacted one of the greatest genocides in modern history. But this book isn't so much about geopolitics even though it was commissioned by the U.S. government. The author presents a psychological profile of Hitler based on interviews, recorded family history, Hitler's own writings, and other sources, to summarize his inner world. This is a deconstruction that is disturbing, insightful, and should give us all pause, in our own time of political upheaval, and economic uncertainty. Similar psychological traits can be see in some of our most bombastic leaders (on the Left and Right) today and is a warning that even warped souls can become powerful leaders who cast a spell over whole cultures. We are not that far from Nazi Germany in our time - read this to be warned.

A leitura foi interessante até certo ponto. O livro na verdade é um relatório escrito em 1944 por um psicanalista a pedido do serviço de inteligência dos Estados Unidos e se trata de uma análise da mente de Adolf Hitler. Por conta do gênero do texto a leitura acaba sendo tediante em alguns momentos, com certas partes sendo mais interessantes que outras. O que mais me chamou atenção durante a leitura foi como uma figura histórica muitas vezes nos é apresetada como um ícone sem sentimentos ou personalidade, quando na verdade se tratam de pessoas assim como nós. Como tal, são produto das suas experiências de vida e, como consequência, possuem uma bagagem emocional que as tornou o que são.
O que mais me cativou nesse livro foi a descrição de como uma série de acontecimentos traumáticos podem direcionar a vida de uma pessoa, que a princípio é normal e singular como qualquer ser humano, a se tornar uma figura icônica e neurótica beirando a psicopatia, como foi o caso de Adolf Hitler.

I am finding it difficult to rate this book. I had to read it for a history class, and although interesting, I'm having a problem associating whole scale genocide with sexual repression and a mommy complex. The man was evil and definitely broken! It would have been better for the world if he had died in childhood. It also does seem that he had a horrible childhood but so have others, and they don't grow up to become murderers of an entire race of people. What's confounding to me is how he convinced millions of people to follow him. Even those closest to him, who knew of his "issues," did not remove him from the world! The Book amplifies the sickness that is present in society and just how easily people are fooled!
