Joey was optimistic about his relationship with Simone, but she leaves him floundering in a sea of confusion when she suddenly dumps him. His mom is marrying a man younger than him, his station has him fundraising in a Santa suit, and there’s an arsonist loose in town. Then he sees her, the petite goddess who won't give him the time of day.
Vivian has all the reasons in the world to not get involved with Joey, the biggest of which is her four-year-old daughter, Carly. Joey's made her a lot of promises, but after the issues she had with her ex, she just knows Joey is too good to be true.
These two can't see what's right in front of them, but when the fuse is ignited, sometimes you just have to cling to someone and hope you survive. Hiding is not an option.
Anne has written her entire life and has the boxes of angst-filled journals and poetry to prove it. She’s been writing for public consumption for the past several years. She lives in rural East Texas with her husband and children in her own private oasis, where she prides herself in her complete lack of social skills, choosing instead to live with the people inside her head.
Currently, she has five romance series. Playing with Fire explores the trials and tribulations of a small team of fire fighters in the fictional mountain town of Pamona Gulch. In Pierce Securities, she gives us Ryan, Evan, Miriam, Zack, Quinten, Jordan, Hollerman, and Simon. Her favorite series, Book B!tches, is all about a group of women in Mystic, Texas who get into all sorts of shenanigans. In Stories of Serendipity, she explores real people living real lives in small town Texas in a contemporary romance setting. In The Four Winds, she chronicles God’s four closest archangels, Uriel, Gabriel, Raphael, and Michael, falling in love and becoming human.
Joey is tired of playing games. He wants to settle down and wants it to be with Vivian. Vivian is scared to think about men. Her life revolves around her daughter. She still feels let down from Carly's dad even 4 years later. Can Joey help her break down those walls or is she too scared to let anyone in?
This is the 2nd book In the playing with fire series.
We meet joey a firefighter who has grown tired of the bed hopping he has been doing, especially after his latest girlfriend dumps him, after telling him she only went out with him to help her friend.
Vivian's 1st impressions of Joey are of an arrogant cocky too sure of him self him jerk. Although drawn to him she's been down that road and it never bodes well for her.
But as they get to know each other, both have their own fears and issues to face.
Another awesom read by Ms Conley the story captivates you and keeps you reading and rooting for the characters. Would. Have liked more interaction with joey and Carly but the end with them made me smile. Looking forward to book 3.
I love this theme of childhood games with the premise behind this series of games people play. I think that Anne’s use of this theme is amazing. I know the firefighters have really given her fits since they insisted to her that they be allowed a voice. She has fought with them and yelled at them, but she has done them justice. We first learn of Joey n Truth or Dare, and he comes across as a player. In hide and week, we see a whole new side. One that is very interesting and attractive. Vivian is scared but she can’t help but try something with Joey. The fall is amazing. Carly is simply the cutest. Learning more about Logan and Katie was fun and I can not wait for Zane to get his. As much as I love the Pierce boys…the firefighters are quickly winning my heart.
The experience of Vivian. Love that phrase. Joey and Vivian work through so much emotionally to end up being spectacular together. Vivian is a single mom whose daughter, Carly, is her life and has been hurt/rejected before and is hesitant to become involved in a relationship but Joey doesn’t give up. He goes all out to prove they are meant to be. I thought Truth or Dare (book 1) was fantastic. Hide and Seek was phenomenal. I literally could not put it down. I am so excited to see what book 3 brings. I like the references to the games you played as a child as the title of the novels. I became hooked by Anne reading Pierce Securities and this new series has me equally hooked.
This story makes you believe in love all over again. Single mom Vivian is bent on staying away from Men after being burned. Smoking Hot Firefighter Joey will do whatever he needs to do to show her that he will be there for her and her daughter. You just can't help but keep them pages turning before they catch fire.
Vivian is a single mom. Her daughter is her life. Vivian has been hurt before and is hesitant to start a new relationship. Joey is tired of the single life. He wants to settle down and he has his sights are set on Vivian. Vivian is scared her last relationship was a disaster. Luckily Joey doesn’t give up easily. He sees something special in Vivian. So he goes all out to show Vivian that they are meant to be together. I could not put this book down. I thought i loved book 1 ok well I did but man let me tell you book 2 was the bomb. I am so super excited to see what book 3 brings.
I’m absofreakinglutely in love with Vivian, Carly and Joey. What a great story!!! I’m loving almost all these characters{ I’d like to skin Abraham } and I have some serious reservations about Katie. I need to know more about her she feels really flip floppy in my head. Obviously I can’t wait until book three!! I’m hooked on yet another Anne Conley series!
Joey is unsure of what he wants is future to look like and who he wants in it with him. He's freshly dumped by someone who never had his heart and when he catches the eye, and disdain, of a fiery beauty he thinks he might have just caught a little clue about that future. Except Vivian wants nothing to do with the muscle-bound hottie, no matter what her lust-starved body says; she's got a lot riding on her keeping her head, and her heart, out of the sheets and firmly in control. Joey's never met a challenge he backed down from and Vivian's heart doesn't stand a chance. As they open their hearts to one another it's clear they both want something more, something deep and lasting, but if they can't see what's right in front of them and take a chance, it'll slip right through their fingers.
It was Joey that captured my attention right away. I knew there was something special about him and it became clear when his earnestness and devotion to Vivian even when she was only an idea once he met her. Changing his ways and turning himself inside out to prove he was worth a chance as well as falling in love with her daughter endeared him to me even more. And when he apologized right away and admitted to his lack of knowledge and understanding regarding both Carly and their history I was practically swooning. He really was the complete package despite his cockiness, bravado, and difficulty accepting his mother's new-found happiness because he was willing to own his faults and improve for the sake of himself and to have a future with Vivian and Carly.
While I knew Joey wasn't perfect, I loved him for everything that found a balance. Vivian didn't have that balance. She was constantly shooting herself in the foot. Being so anti men based on one, albeit horrible, experience was short-sighted. Her commitment to her daughter was admirable and I absolutely do not fault her for it, except it often went to the extreme. Protecting her heart is one thing but when she was almost cruel in her actions I couldn't get on board. Her evolution, however, was wonderful. She went from being surrounded by walls to being open and laid bare for someone she learned she could trust to treat her the way she deserved. I enjoyed watching her open up to Joey and to the women who became her good friends, seeing her build her own community of support and love.
I enjoyed the story overall and felt that there was a lot of potential for both characters both as individuals and together. Joey felt like a complete person and watching him grow and mature made everything worth it. Similarly with Vivian, watching her become the softer, more open, more forgiving version of herself showed me that they were worth getting to know. I did feel that Carly read a lot older than her described age, though to be fair, she could just be emotionally, verbally, and socially advanced for her age. Overall, it was a pleasure to read their story mostly for their individual growth and for the passion that they shared that deepened into something long-lasting.
Joey thought Simone was the one for him. When she dumped him, he realized she had just been using him. Thinking he would never find his soul mate, Joey dedicates his energy to his job as a firefighter and to making his mom's wedding the best it can be. Joey doesn't like that the man his mom is marrying is his age, but he wants her to be happy. After work, he wonders into the store to have his tux fitted and stumbles upon the most beautiful woman he's ever seen. He can tell his pick up lines and smile won't work with her though. So he comes up with a plan...
Vivian is devoted to one thing and one thing only, her daughter. Vivian does NOT date--especially players which she assumes he is. Not that she isn't attracted to Joey, but she's been burned in the past and doesn't want a repeat. Carley's dad abandoned her and left Vivian when he found out she was pregnant. Her own family even turned their backs on her. Vivian has always relied on herself, so she's never disappointed or hurt. Vivian doesn't even know how to let someone in, even when Joey does everything he can to prove himself to her.
While I really enjoyed this story, more than the first one, I got tired of Vivian's indeciveness. As a single mom, I understand her reluctance. It's hard when children are involved as you don't want them to get hurt if things go poorly. But Joey was kind, patient, loving, and accepting. He never did anything, except support Vivian in her decisions and feelings. She crushed him! Other than that, a very enjoyable read. I loved the suspense and Carley's pure joy in all things kid related! I received a gifted copy and all opinions stated are my own.
HIDE inside pain? or do we SEEK out something dynamic?
HIDE AND SEEK is about facing fears and earning trust when it’s so hard to do both. I loved reading this story in the second book of the PLAYING WITH FIRE series…
Again , wonderful character and story development. It’s Joey’s determination to slowly erode Vivian’s rock solid defenses, even when he doesn’t always have a clue. He relies on an innate sense of gut feeling and wanting something new, something different than his previous, vapid relationships. Vivian’s walls are mighty. Her self-doubts and vulnerabilities have been ingrained through hurt and let downs while struggling to raise her daughter as a single parent. Her adorable daughter will win hearts all over…
You’re going to caught up in the middle of life’s drama and the thrills when love is experienced. It’s fun, it’s dramatic, it’s heat and sexiness in the words inside this book. It’s HIDE AND SEEK. Read what it will take to bring two beautiful, stubborn and vulnerable souls together. Join Joey and Vivian, share their journey.
Could that be all? Anne gives you another sneaky glimpse of some nefarious activity at play… I’m so wondering just how that snippet evolves… or should it have been more? Piqued your interest? You know, you’ve got to keep reading this series to see how it all play out... If you haven’t started… go back to the beginning. It’s turning out to be a whole lot of serious, yet tenderhearted, fun reading this series. :)
If you like romance and HEAs, or small towns or firemen, this series is for you.
This is the second book in Conley’s Playing with Fire series and she does a great job with timing and continuity, giving us more of the characters we previously met, along with new ones. The more I read of this series, the more I crave. She manages to really pull at the heartstrings fairly early on, using Vivian and Carly beautifully.
I completely cannot get enough of this town, the entire dynamic, all the characters, even the businesses with their own personalities are so much fun; I’m going to be gutted when it’s over.
Joey’s a great guy, you’ll likely find yourself rooting for him. Katie and Logan are still full of dysfunction, and I can’t wait for their book!
It does feature ‘insta-love”, but Conley has a way of making it work. The characters truly get to know and fall for each other; they just fall hard and fast; the feelings are real. It’s a quick read, but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking anything.
Clearly the character development is on point and there’s no shortage of drama. Family drama, romantic drama, fire drama/action, some mystery… it’s got the all the makings of an exciting, feel-y read and the small-town dynamic just seals the deal for me.
Hide & Seek is Book 2 in the Playing with Fire series and was such a great read. I was hooked from the very first page. I have been a fan of Anne’s skills for quite a while and this book is no different.
In this book, we meet Joey and Vivian. When Joey first spots her she is bringing food into the fire house but she is a challenge. She doesn’t give him the time of day. Joey really has to work to get her attention even though she secretly daydreams about what his hands would feel like caressing her body or how his lips would feel pressed against hers.
Just when you think Vivian is giving in to Joey and his seduction tactics, she pulls away. Joey doesn’t see Vivian and just another bed-warmer. He cares a lot about her and is even growing attached to her daughter. What will happen when Vivian really needs him to come through for her?
Another great series by this author and cannot wait to read the next book. Dying to find out Logan’s story!!!
I just LOVED this book!! This is Joey and Vivian’s book. These characters really “feel” real. Like I’m listening to a friend talk during girls night out. In this story, joey is a fire fighter and his mom is getting married...again. He just got dumped by his girlfriend, who he just figured out was more sex than feelings. He wants something deeper. He goes to get fitted for his tux and BAM! There she is...this woman he saw once and keeps thinking about. She blows him off at first, buuuuuuut, gives in and gives him a chance. He works hard to not scare her off. He works hard trying to do things differently than what he is used to.
You gotta see what happens at Christmas! You gotta see his moms wedding. You gotta see his inner dialogue Does Santa come though for a little girl? Can Vivian open her heart again? Can Joey get the woman of his dreams??
Vivian has a rule. She will not date or get involved with anyone, ever. The reason is because of her four year old daughter. She doesn't want to disrupt her child's life and since Carly's Dad decided to not be in her life, Vivian didn't want Carly getting attached to another guy and then him not be there either. Joe is a firefighter who got the job of playing Santa this year. Carly and Vivian went to the Breakfast With Santa and Vivian did her best to avoid Joey, but when Carly told Joey what she wanted for Christmas, Joey decided to keep playing Santa and help make this the best Christmas ever for the little girl...and maybe win her Mommy's heart too.
I'm really liking this series. Anne has created these characters that seem so real, it's like I'm reading about things going on in my own friend's lives. I can't wait for the next one!
HIDE & SEEK is the second book in the Playing with Fire series. Though each stands on its own for the romance component, they will be need to be read in the order of release due to the continuing story of the arsonist.
I loved that Joey recognized his need to mature and desired a lasting relationship. His bold openness to change is refreshing. More so, his patience, persistence, and personality won me over.
I understand Vivian’s hesitancy. Putting your heart out there is frightening and there are many who are selfish while claiming otherwise. Still – there is the happy sigh when it all comes together as it must in every romance novel.
When I got to the point where I understood why this book was assigned the game “hide and seek,” I smiled. I laughed. I loved it. It is perfect!
I love this series and the mystery of the arsonist is well hinted without being obvious. I’m anxious to see what will happen. Who might it be?
Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC, my opinions are my own and are given freely.
Title: HIDE & SEEK Series: Playing with Fire #2 Category /Genre: Contemporary Romance Recommended for: 18+ due to sexual content Grammar/editing: book received as an unedited ARC / errors excused Received from: Anne Conley (as an ARC gifted copy)
A magnificently steamy, sweet, a bit playful at times and with a whole heaping of push and pull that leaves the reader feeling well satisfied and wanting more!
The next book in Anne Conley's Playing With Fire series, Hide And Seek is about Joey and Vivian and oh boy, these two definitely have sparks! I enjoyed these two a lot and watching their passion flair was really something to enjoy. I really am LOVING these fiery, passionate Playing With Fire series and am looking forward to getting my hands on Spin The Bottle. So far Hide and Seek is my favorite. I felt the flames of desire scorch me REAL GOOD as I flipped through these pages. I just ADORE a good fireman!
Hide and Seek By Anne Conley Main Characters: Vivian and Joey I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author. 4 out of 5 stars Joey is a firefighter who has just been dumped by a girl (Simone) who was just using him. His mom is getting married soon and he needs to go in for his tux fitting and sees the most beautiful girl. His usual pickup lines don't seem to work on Vivian. Turns out Vivian does not date ever. You need to read out that turns out and the why she doesn't date. This is the second book in the "Playing with Fire series that I have read. I will try to read them all. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
I am totally in love with this series and I devoured Hide and Seek and yearned for more!! Joey is tired of meaningless relationships and Vivian has sworn off men for the duration of this lifetime... But when fate steps in and brings them together neither of them can fight the connection they have and together they have to battle past AND present demons threatening their happiness. Anne Conley has a way to draw your interest towards her characters that makes you connect with them like you are feeling what the characters are feeling.
Joey has just recently been dumped by a woman whom he thought he cared for.... and realized that it was more about sex than anything... Vivian has a strict no dating rule, and with good reason....until Joey comes along....she is very hesitant, but there is just something about him that draws her to him... He meets Vivian's daughter Carly at a Breakfast with Santa, and decides he wants to fulfill all her wishes, and some of her moms too. These two are a cute couple... a hot mess from the start... but as Joey said...bless this mess... and I think they were. Looking forward to the next book!
We meet Joey who is fresh from a breakup and is now looking for something more then just screwing around and Vivian a single Mum who’s not looking for any kind of relationship with any man. Luckily Joey knows how to fight for what he wants.
I loved the build up in their relationship, they are both very likeable/relatable characters.
This book had just enough of everything to keep me hooked, very much looking forward to book 3.
This is the second book in the playing with fire series. The theme of children's games is interesting and entertaining. You definitely need to read the previous books to understand what is happening. This is vivian and Joey's story. Joey is newly single and wants something serious. Vivian is not looking for a relationship. Sparks fly with these two. I recommend this book and the others in the series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book.
Joey just wants a family of his own……..and to stop the arsonist. Vivian is distrustful of men and only wants to make a good home for her young daughter. She may try to hide from Joey, but he’s determined to win his prize.
This book hooked me in from page one. I'm a huge fan of Anne, and this book topped my expectations. I was genuinely sad when it was over!! Well-written and exciting. A true page-turner that kept me up late at night.
Book two in this series sees us with Joey and Vivian. Joey did think his relationship with Simone was going somewhere until it wasn’t, and she was only there so her best friend could get back with her ex. Vivian is wary of new relationships especially with a child. As the problems stack up for Joey such as a Santa suit, an arsonist, his mom’s marriage to a younger man and Vivian, can Joey put everything aside to get what he truly wants? Will Vivian drop her guard and give Joey a chance? A fantastic series and I cant wait for the next book to come out
