The Magician's Brother #2

The Sorcerer's Loss

Rate this book
My twin brother has started to go mad, and my powers are the cause. Nobody knows how to stop it and all the facts are telling me that unless I can cure him, my brother is very likely going to try and kill me soon.

And that's just how this whole mess starts...

From there I run face first into a whole stack of problems, including a crazy werewolf girl, a large pack of flesh-eating ghouls and a trip to the greatest repository of magical knowledge in the world, where someone like me is definitely not welcome.

There, I discover dark secrets from before the birth of modern civilisation, and make an enemy of the toughest woman I've ever met, one whose motto may as well have been 'when in doubt, stab it a lot'!

If that wasn't enough, Windward Academy has a new magic teacher, who also doesn't like me very much (who does these days?). She's not only far more powerful than I am, she's also hiding secrets of her own, any one of which could vastly complicate an already touchy situation.

But I can't let any of that stop me. I've got to find a way to help Des, but the only paths open to me are costly and horrifically dangerous. No matter what I do, I'm bound to lose something precious.

I still have to try.

I usually never write a review, but I had to for this one. I love fantasy and have been reading it since basically the day I was born, so when I read the blurb for the first book I got really excited. I'm mostly just sad because this book had so much wasted potential. The plot is great and the author is really good at writing dramatic action scenes. The main character could've been great if he wasn't so...I'm not really sure what the right word is. I like his powers, but his personality was poorly written and very 2D. There were many spelling mistakes and awkward sentences. In addition the author tried to make the setting in Britain but really failed at bringing it to life. All the characters were extremely obnoxious, especially the female ones. For some reason females just seem to flock the main character and develop a major crush on him, which is really annoying. I wanted some strong female characters but all I got were vapid, annoying, weak, contradictory, and many many other unappealing descriptive words. There's blatant sexism in the book that I kinda forgave in the first book because it wasn't as obvious. Even though it seems like the author didn't mean to make it sexist, it was. For example, every SINGLE time the main character did something idiotic and dangerous, Cathy, his friend, would be in absolute hysterics while his other friend, Billy, would pretty much be fine. This pattern really grated on me after awhile. The "bullys" in the first book were very poorly written and very unrealistic. They didn't really have a point and mostly just took up page space, another annoying pattern I saw. I was also really disappointed with the plot in regards to the main character's brother. I was really looking forward to a story were the brothers were really close and were good friends, but instead all I got was the main character's brother turns evil because of some obscure reason that was kinda just thrown in there. The main character's brother was stupid and very "bro" like. Overall I am extremely disappointed in this author because this book had so much potential and they ruined it. This book just seemed half-assed.

This is just so much fun to read! Some storylines were wrapped up, while some new ones came up. I feel like I don't understand one of the main storylines but it doesn't matter because Mathew is hilarious and sweet and the action is still almost non-stop and the supporting cast is growing. I can't wait for the next one in the series

I'm generally not a fan of fantasy, though I've read a number of the major popular works in my life. HDA Roberts' two books in "The Magician's Brother" series are enjoyable, just different and clever enough to win a reader over. This second book is even better than the first, with greater degrees of humor and sarcasm. Added types of magical creatures makes it even more interesting. And, it all takes place in current time with a large number of allusions to current popular culture from video games to clothing and hair styles. Try the books for their simple enjoyment.

I assumed this was the last in the series until I got to the last Kindle page that said one should watch for "Archon's Hope, Volume 3." I'm looking forward to it.

Tough love & love is incredibly tough.

The writer really doesn't pull any punches when it comes to the less noble behaviors. Discrimination, prejudices, bullying, social stratification, betrayal, and heartbreak. The brothers' relationship dynamics present some real surprises. Parts of this were really hard to read. But there's plenty of other stuff going on to balance it all out. I just keep getting more invested in the storyline and really want to see the MC get beyond the crud.

The Sorcerer's Loss is overall an enjoyable follow up to the first book that I thought was excellent, but it did get off to a bit of a rocky start.

The first 40% of this book was really shaky for this reader. The main character started doing things that were, for lack of a better phrase, really f***ing stupid. He was making decisions that were not at all what any sane person would do and were guaranteed to go wrong from the moment the protagonist thought of it.

On top of this, it introduced two extremely bi-polar characters that were really jarring.

Another jarring thing in the early part of the book was the change in the main character. In the first book he was a magician who didn't even think he measured up to his brother in power. I know that this was addressed by the end of that book and he knew that he wasn't so normal, but by the start of this book, he has changed his opinion of himself completely. Suddenly he is really arrogant about how powerful he is, constantly saying how other people don't measure up to the point where he is even being cocky about it. It didn't feel right for his character, but this particular problem stuck with the book throughout the whole story, so I did eventually get used to it. It just felt strange is all.

Finally, there are things introduced in the first 40% of the book that come into the story and then leave it again without any real impact on the overall story.

However, all that said, that first 40% wasn't awful, it was just rocky. There were interesting things happening and through it all there was the easy-reading writing style that I like so much. I especially liked the strong friendships the main character has in this book which makes even that early section easy to read.

About the 40% mark though, it suddenly does away with a lot of the things that were frustrating me and finds its rhythm again. At this point the story gripped me once more and it had me engaged right to the very end. Like with the first book, this story isn't pulling any punches and refuses to take its time, so the plot is seriously progressed in this book. Were it not for the moments the author takes to let the character just enjoy his friendships, his situation, and revel in his powers, then this might make the story feel like you can't take a breath. However, there are nice moments that means this story is not just all business, and I really enjoyed those being in here.

Also, coming back to those relationships. I really like the fact that the author hasn't tried to make every relationship in the character's life toxic. Matty is more likely to win over an acquaintance and turn them into a good friend than an enemy, and that's something I enjoy reading about as its a change of the norm. In fact, Matty's support system is really healthy in this book which is great, because I am fed up of reading stories where friends are friends in name only and because the author tells you that they are. The friends in this book always back up their words with actions which is nice to see.

One final gripe I had with the book was that there are a lot of typos and the dialogue could get stilted at times. The main character calling his parents by 'mother' and 'father' rather than 'mum' and 'dad' felt really unnatural as well. But these are surface-level issues at best and nothing that actually got in the way of the story being told.

Overall, this isn't quite as strong as its predecessor but there is a lot to like here and I am no less excited about this series going forward than I was with the last book. I look forward to seeing what comes next.

So I’ve been reading so many great reviews about this series and I started book one with great anticipation. It fell flat for me. However most first books are about laying the foundation and sometimes it’s a start to something great. Ok let’s try book two. I wanted a longer aeries to sink into was I was full of hope. However I kept putting the book down in frustration.

I get this series is about teenagers that will eventually grow into full thinking adult but can I say Cathy is one of the biggest reasons why I’m going to stop this book. I love the fact that Matthew has friends that ground him but I’m not sure why Cathy is always in hysterics. She is literally always wailing about problems, angry that he gets himself into trouble and then cries when he gets the job done. But Matthew is different. Yes he gets into terrible situations but he’s always babying her and allowing her hysterics take full stage. Nothing about her has been useful and she’s just plain annoying with little growth.

Now Matthew. Ok. How much BS can someone take with an inane smile on his face? I have never read a character who has more of a slick back because crap just slides off him. Is he a saint? He never holds grudges. Literally people beat the crap out of him and he’s all oh I understand why you did it. I get he’s a shadow mage and he has to hold his temper but the way his powers are growing he seems
Kind of too… simple? to be wielding it? I’m not looking for the punisher and I appreciate that he has to reign in his temper and not fall to the dark side. I feel like this author has taken a lot from the the Harry Dresden series to make
Matthew but we get this ultra simplistic human being that while might be book smart, seems kind of dumb? The goly gee whizz mentality, the omg boobies I need to look up! And my lord every single woman wants him now? And he’s forgiven them all because well they’re hot and forgive him but he’s a man? There are parts where I really enjoy him, he does shine when situations arise and he needs to fight. But he shines without his imbecilic friends around. The whole tent this was eye rolling cringe. I’m sorry but I just can’t with this book. Maybe later in the series when he’s actually maturing it’ll finally show him at his best but my god I just can’t.

Here's the thing. I finished this first book and realized that it was problematic, but had potential to get better. I gave it the benefit of the doubt, because I enjoy magic school settings. It's a cliche I enjoy. So I read the next books hoping it would mature and improve. It didn't. It got worse.

I made it to book 3 and I'm not even sure how I managed to hang on that long. I guess I liked the idea of it and the magic. The characters, though? My god, lol. SO BAD. And they got worse with each book. The females were, all of them, madly in love with the main character. He had the stupidest, least believable harem. All these "super badass" women and they spend 99% of their time just fussing over him. The first book had hints of this, but the next 2 just bathed in it. I can't think of a single healthy relationship that existed in this series. Every interaction, I swear to you every one of them, had some kind of sexual inuendo inserted into it. Even conversations with his parents! His one male friend was an imbecile. Basically just an offensive libido that played video games off screen. His girl friend just cried and hit people and yelled at them. That's it. That was her whole personality. His brother was an abusive psycho, even before there was a plot device to make him that way. I mean... it was not good. I wouldn't be writing a review this long or angry if I wasn't so mad about the potential for it not being terrible. It took what could have been a fun little coming-of- age adventure between friends and made it into some 13 year old edgelord, "nice" guy's wet dream. Pass. Fucking hard pass.

Yeah, I think I'll be taking back my initial 4-star review of the first book.

To quote the start of this book, MC wasn't the only one that "chickened out" of something; the writer clearly did so as well, allowing this silly lazy plotline to continue, despite the implicit promise at the end of the last book.

The story's quickly devolved into your harem regular. Oh, there were signs of this in the first book, but I was hopeful. Persistent even unto this book, that it would get better and the writer would rein themselves in.

I write now at 66% where critical info is now being traded for tongue with succubae. Yes. With much elaboration, and some cloying excuse for demurral from MC.

Not to mention the garbage treatment of the brother or the greater fucked-up-ness of the MC meddling in people's heads, and then wondering (along with all his 1D friends/dickriders) why some of those people may want to murder him for it.

Even the magic system isn't really all that. It's easy to conflate a rush of fantasy buzzwords ("Will", "Well", "life force") and overdescribed mechanics, with the feel of a solid magic system. But any long-enough reader of fantasy knows that consistency, and often simplicity, are the most critical and common properties of excellent systems.

I'll of course be dropping the story here.

Main character is pathologically forgiving, especially towards women.

Feels really sexist in a "real men don't hit women" kind of way. An extremely dangerous woman will literally try to murder him, and he will treat her with kid gloves and go to extreme lengths to protect her. He literally uses mind magic against men who treat him the same way (or not even as bad) and alters their minds, but noooooo he couldn't use self-defence against a hot girl! She's just toooooooo hot, he shouldn't protect himself from a hot girl. Gross. You know you don't have to let women do terrible things to you right?

Feels especially irritating because I liked almost everything else in this series (well, until like book 6 but that's another story). Enjoyed the world-building, magic, characters (er, well, with a lot of exceptions), etc. I could forgive a lot of the other errors in the story if the main character would just treat women the same way he treats men. The author puts a lot of work into establishing that the MC is always trying to be kind and doesn't want to hurt people - fine. Just make it consistent. Making him act completely differently with women just because they're women is just sexist and kinda gross (both in general, and on the MC's behalf).

Disappointing

I got a quarter of the way through before I gave up. The main character is too lucky, arrogant and contradictory. He knowingly walks into situations that are deadly but then gets concerned that a being trying to kill him bangs it head against a wall. I was hoping for some growth in the MC but instead I got more "Oops, did I do that". The main character became too hard to read.

The rest of the characters are less than real, except for several women and girls who play minor parts. Letting supernatural creatures live after they have identified you, while they were trying to kill you, is insane but every battle in the book, is that battle. The plot got away from me and possibly the writer also.

I had hopes for this series but it seems the series is devolving.

Great story. Still face paced and engaging as the first book in the series!

Enjoyed the second book the series. The main character and the supporting cast were well written. The pace of the story was good, and the dialogue was excellent.
There seem to be a lot of grammatical errors that throw you off your pace a little bit and we're a little annoying. It was not enough to ruin the story, which overall was very enjoyable. The end was a little convoluted, and I think the writer missed an opportunity not to close one of the plot lines with the main character's brother. The author had a chance to finalize that and however allowed the brother to still remain as an antagonist for the future. Overall the book was very good and enjoyable. I look forward to book three in the series!

Good book.
Minor, little tiny miny minor-iny SPOILER ahead.

For the plot itself - it wasn't as dense and particular like in previous book but it was interesting enough.
But the most important detail - Matty's really grown up. And in logical, good way. I could cry for that. :')

Very bittersweet

I love that Matt is able to grow, even through so much sorrow. I am a bit confused about the consequences of the Severing. We learned that the spell would cut out the love of the people who cared for the one who was cursed, but that the cursed one themselves would still have those emotions. But when the spell was activated, why did the results seem to differ from expectations? Maybe I just missed it, but I re-read the events a couple of times to try and work through it…

Isn’t it interesting that every Shadowborn eventually turns evil, and yet, in the case of twins of light and shadow, it’s always the light twin who is driven insane and murderous?

Fantastic 2nd Book

I absolutely loved the first book in the series but didn’t want to write a review until I’d completed the 2nd, as very often a series will start off promising only to fizzle into a lesser being by book 2. Well that was certainly Not the case with this story!

Book two was just as wonderful as the first! Such beautiful writing (I’m talkin’ great command of grammer and prose here!), inventive uses of magic, and incredibly likable characters! Had me gripped from start to finish, and I can’t wait for number 3!

An amazing sequel! The story carries on right where the previous one ended. Still having vibes of Curseworkers trilogy, which I love immensely! One thing I hate is the progression (or lack thereof) of Matthew & Des’ relationship. I am really hoping that the author not go down that road he is paving, I’d do anything for Des to get well again! Once again, the action and battles are epic! The wit and humour is...witty and humorous? The characters are very well done, the plot is fast and interesting. A good, solid book! Highly recommended!

What a ride!

I’m two books into this series...today. It’s very late, or early and I’m going to start the third book. I think I found a new favorite series and author. Do yourself a favor and get started on this series when you have plenty of time available because you’ll want to read them in one giant go! To the author of this wonderful series I have one thing to say. Please keep writing.

Awesome

This was an awesome book. I felt for Matty on several occasions. Poor kid can’t catch a break. And you could literally feel the hatred his twin brother has for him. You’ll have to read to understand. Hopefully they’ll be another in the series. We’ll see how it plays out. Will his brother ever not have contempt for him?

Great book. Quick and easy to get ensnared by the plot.

Well, this is book two of a genre that I normally pass on. What a wonderful mistake this has been. I guess I'm hooked. Matty rocks! I'm still finding those pesky gremlins spelling errors, but they don't hide the vision in the words. Grabbing up book 3 now. Can't wait to see what's next.6

This world gets even richer than before. Plenty of action and details. I loved that Matthew and his girlfriend couldn't keep their grades up once they got together. I don't like heroes who can do everything well and/or a saint. The seelie colony was a great addition.

A complex novel that seemed longer than it actually was, in all the good ways.

Great read, one glaring repeated word error

I really enjoyed this second book in the series. The one phrase that sounded strange to me, “I was sat”, I looked up and it’s apparently a British usage and some explanations of it’s correctness makes sense. Also, the word “wondering” should be “wandering” each time it appears. Otherwise, a fun read. On to book 3!

wow! I love this series

Every book just keeps getting better! I am really enjoying this series but it is costing me sleep because I cannot put it down! Great writing and character development. I really love how Matty has so many deep and evolving relationships that are each unique in themselves.

Wonderful

A wonderfully British action fantasy comedy for old and young, the second book in the series presents us with even more mayhem, magic, drama and yes - detention - than the first book did. Great fun. Recommended.

Great First-person Narrative

Matthew can tell a story and pull us along no on his journey of discovery of self, friends, and the hard realities of resisting the arrogant and powerful. Enjoy his gifts not the least being a colorful teller of his life’s adventures.

Very good.

Almost couldn't put it down. Better than most of the 2nd-of-a-series books that I have read recently. Very nice to see a lead character who is only occasionally "too dumb to live" and frequently shows some maturity. Should get a 4 1/2 Star rating. Great magic!

Love this series!

I was a bit worried that the first book was a fluke but I needn’t have worried. Marty is pulling together an interesting cast of characters around him as he develops his skills. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Really enjoyed the 2nd book. The plot moved nicely forward and the conflict between the brothers was ar least temporarily resolved. Lots of action kept the book exciting throughout.

Your making your main character blind

Ok between the love interest and the arcon situation it's getting ridiculous how clueless the genius level sorcerer is. But it's a good series. I'm enjoying it.

rather surprising

I’m liking this series more and more. The world view is evolving. The main characters are interesting but oblivious to what is going on. Just leads to surprises. The combat descriptions is interesting. Overall enjoyable.
