Five Roads to Texas #3

For Which We Stand: Ian's Road, Volume 1

Rate this book
El Paso wasn’t the Promised Land that Ian and his crew had hoped for but it wasn’t a total bust either. The concept of a safe haven in today’s world was a fool’s errand at best. This was the consensus of their tiny band and to keep moving, their only salvation. While others waited in their pens the four from the private security company moved on taking on as many they could help, in hopes that they too would join the fight. Their journey was long and arduous but it was worth it… they hope.
El Paso is where the final evidence that this is more than a simple lab experiment gone wrong. It was too focused with too many players who knew too much too early in the game causing assumptions to be made. Assumptions that gained strength with every step they took until the small troop was convinced that this was not just a simple virus of natural origins, America was under attack.
For Which We Stand is a post-apocalyptic thriller that lends credence to the fears that many share. Is it possible? No one can say, Five Roads to Texas is but one of hundreds end of the world scenarios. We all know it’s coming, how and when is the only question.

Joseph Hensen takes the helm this time for another great addition to the series. This time following Ian and his small band of mercenaries as they make their way to find answers. Along the way they pick up unlikely allies.

I love the Ian acknowledges and embraces that the world is different now - that while he may be a leader and feels responsibility to those in his groups, he does not turn into a dictator. Giving them all free will and the choice to stay or go with him. His relationship with the younger members of the group is particularly endearing.

Again, loved characters are lost and it’s always so hard, but it makes these stories so real at the same time.

This absolutely ends on a cliffhanger as Ian’s “team” uncovers more of the plot that led to the outbreak.

Narration:

Andrew B Wehrlen does another great job here. I especially appreciate his ability to bring levity to the banter and anticipation to the fighting scenes.

Ian and his group of security professionals that some call mercenaries are leaving El Paso. They have killed Dr. Sanjay and retrieved intel on safe houses throughout the United States. In the process, a man named Ram that was being used to inject variants of the virus into was rescued, and he and his partner, Jesse have now joined Ian’s group. The writing is on the wall for El Paso and Ft. Bliss. With millions of infected attacking the walls each day and food and other supplies running low for the over four million refugees something has got to give. It’s only a matter of time before tensions explode.

Hanson’s novel in the Five Roads To Texas series, For Which We Stand: Ian’s road follows Ian on his quest to find answers and those responsible. It is a much more zombie-ish tale than I would have liked. But, that is my opinion and in no way reflects on this review. The story is full of hard-hitting action and nail-biting suspense. The pace is quick.

This storyline is my favorite of the five. The mystery of who and why are explored along with the response from those able to rise and fight back. There are moments to cheer and moments for anger. I found this to be an emotional book. The fate of the United States is not so clear. Will Ian’s group be enough to make a difference?

As much as I’d love to give this book 5 stars I cannot. It is too many errors and is not as well edited as the other two books in the series. Therefore,

4 out of 5 stars.

ADDICTIVE!!

Ian and crew are some of my favorite FRTT characters, so this is the first novel I’ve read since the first. It definitely didn’t disappoint! I read it in one overnight (sleep? Who needs sleep?? Lol).

The same as the first... the characters are rich in depth. The scenes are exciting and surprising. The pace is non-stop. Gotta love the unique infected. Everything about it just keeps you glued to the story.

The only disappointment was Ram. But it just occurred to me that another author originally wrote Ram and Jesse’s story. No wonder Ram acted soooooo completely out of character here. It was confusing and - honestly, sad. For this part, I do wish the author had taken more care. Thinking about it now, it’s almost like Ram, and Jesse, were “throw away” characters. Not part of this author’s original script... he was sorta dumped off with them. ?? That whole bit of the book, scenes, dialogue, etc., pulled me right out of the story. It’s too bad. Ram’s a better man than the way he was handled here. And this book is a better book; deserved a better exit.

Ok, with that said — the other 98.9% of the novel is phenomenal!!!! A chapter of one of the newest — but one of the very best — series in the genre. I hope FRTT continues to grow. Ian and company’s story, as well as all others. Ideally for years to come!!!

LOVE!!!!!!!

As the series continues our crew knows it’s time to get out of El Paso and head for the nearest safe house in Scottsdale, while picking up survivors along the way. They come across a canine training facility besieged by infected, rescuing the owner and several dogs; two in particular, Jasper and Thor, which will prove very handy in weeks to come. Jasper was earmarked for Ian and Thor went to Hosea. Evidently the North Koreans and Iranians have plans for our resources and infrastructure so nukes are a no-no. The virus set loose on our country is to remove most if not all of the resistance. Then the invasion can commence full force. At least that’s the master plan. Will it succeed? Great characters and storytelling

I think the "Ian" stories from "Five Roads to Texas" collaboration might be my favorite characters. Hansen makes liking Ian and his group so easy that you just naturally ride along as one of the group.

Hanson's style does rely heavily on military-speak, which could be confusing for those unfamiliar, however it isn't too hard to realize gun names and vehicle acronyms and just accept what they are even if you don't know what it necessarily looks or sounds like. Hansen does a good job of not bogging you down in needing to know those details to enjoy the story.

I look forward to reading the next book about Ian and the gang later in the series.

This was a good addition to the Five Roads saga. Ian and his crew are leaving El Paso, trying to reach another safe house. Along the way, they encounter survivors, military (US and enemy) and, of course, Zombies!

There is a lot of action, a bunch of new characters and DOGS! I loved the addition of the dogs and hope to read more about Jasper and some of the other characters in future books. If you enjoy books in the zompoc genre with an emphasis on military-type action, you will love this book.

The narrator does a great job and continues to be one of my favorites. I was given the chance to listen to this book through Audiobook Boom! and chose to review it.

After thoroughly enjoying the first two editions of Five Roads to Texas (plus the prequel which is numbered as edition eight), along comes this stinker. It has no continuity, to put it mildly. Ian's gang are superhumans who want to take on over one million infected by themselves, and in comparison to those editions I have read to this point, this book seems to be thrown in as an afterthought to the series. Very disappointed and I closed the book for good without finishing. I am nevertheless, off and into edition four. Excellent series minus this book...

Joe Hanson's novel picks up immediately following the 5 Roads to Texas. Ian and his team find some new additions to their group, while trying to gather information on the virus that has caused the apocalypse. Fleeing Texas determined to make it to Washington the group starts there Trek across the hostile landscape. Great characters, fast paced read with plenty of action. This book will keep you turning the pages. I highly recommend this story.

Fast paced and relentless

Hansen provides the next chapter of the Five Roads universe with his usual relentless pace that leaves you breathing hard and realizing TEOTWAWKI is likely to be a nonstop scramble for survival against all threats, and not just those infected with the species-ending disease! Great addition to the expanding world of 5R2T!

A follow up to Five Roads. I was grabbed from the beginning filled with action as only Joseph Hansen can do. Everything flowed perfectly, Ian is one of my favorite characters.
The ability to bring the characters of the pages the dialogue and suspense built by Mr. Hansen it over the top

One of Joe Hanson’s best told stories yet!

This book is outstanding in its expression of desperation and survival during the Apocalypse. Very well told with great characters and a great storyline that keeps you interested so much you might lose as much sleep as I did reading it. Well recommended read.

Great continuation of the series but I’m definitely missing some of the other characters.
This one leaves you at a cliffhanger moment.
If you’ve read the others you must read this one as well! Can’t wait for book 4!

Andrew does an amazing job narrating as always!

Decent story

The overall story was pretty good, but it seemed a little inconsistent as far as the character development. Ian went from large and in charge to screwing up tactics and getting made fun of by his people. The ending left a little to be desired as well. Almost seemed like the download was incomplete so it just stopped. The ending was very unexpected.

The journey continues...

Battling both the hordes of infected as well as the invading forces of a nation more than halfway around the world; (except no one is quite sure if it is North Korea, Iran, or whomever) progress is staying alive and finding others to join with in pursuit of the same goal. Life is perilous with death waiting around each corner...

5 stars for a great book, but don't like how all of a sudden it ends and there are parts of other books to check out. I am into the story I am reading and not able to just start reading parts of other stories with different characters. It is incredibly confusing.

Joe Does it Again

These Phalanx Press Authors continue to bring together a phenomenal series. With a couple of new players coming on to the scene, the zombies aren't the greatest danger anymore. I can't wait to see what's next!

Light Plot ~~ Mostly Combat Description

Not much of a story in this book in the series — book relies on just describing various skirmishes and minor battles,
