When a man is found dead near middle-aged beekeeper Alice Townsend's beehives, it sets the town abuzz!

When middle-aged beekeeper Alice Trentwell installs some hives in Christchurch's red zone, she looks forward to her bees pollinating the bounty of fruit trees in the area. Instead, after just one day, a dead body is discovered nearby covered in bee stings. Now the police believe that a killer used her bees as a murder weapon.

Desperate to keep her hives safe from destruction, and the bees safe from police officers on the hunt for evidence, Alice sets out to solve the murder. Between an argumentative wife, a neighbor embroiled in property disputes, and a potential stalker, she's soon in over her head.

As if having a potential murder conviction hanging over her hives wasn't enough of a worry, Alice's dog Chester is also feeling under the weather. Trouble just seems to be making a beeline to Alice's door.

The Honeybee Mysteries are quick 1-2 hour reads perfect for filling in time waiting for appointments, commuting to work, or when your significant other insists on watching the show that makes you roll your eyes!

The stories contain no swearing, no cliffhangers, and no graphic scenes but are chockablock full of bees.

I'm a middle-aged woman who works in insurance, doesn't have children or pets, can't drive, has lived in Christchurch my entire life, and currently reside a two-minute walk from where I was born.

For some reason, I've developed a rich fantasy life.

I like to write mysteries, some set in my hometown of Christchurch, others ninety minutes up the road in the beautiful township of Hanmer Springs, or in the quasi-fictional town of Pinetar. These mysteries range from hard-hitting psychological thrillers, through to police procedurals, or the lighter adventure of a cozy mystery.

This was such a sweet (no honey pun intended, honest!) mystery featuring Alice, a very nice woman who had discovered in her 40s that she was autistic. She loved bees and was a beekeeper and relocater of hives. When a dead man was discovered as the apparent victim of multiple bee stings, Alice couldn't believe her beloved bees could do that unless they'd been badly provoked or the guy was pushed into their hives.

She dug into the case with tenacity, but there was a good twist at the end regarding the murder and the killer. I'll be interested in reading the next books. This was a nice, light and quick read. I learned a few things about bees and was impressed that it wasn't presented as technical, just how everyday people would understand about them. I liked that about Alice (and her author!).

After having read a bunch of cozy mysteries last year without my knowing what they actually were, I decided to give them another chance this year and The Honeybee Mysteries trilogy was available for free on Kindle Unlimited so I said, why not?

Also? Look at the cover!!! ♥♥♥

I really enjoyed The Buzz Kill. Fast and easy to read with a very lovable female character named Alice. Alice is a beekeeper and the most danger she has in her life is the bees she's tending to but, to her, there is no problem because she knows what she's doing and it's the people all around her she has issues with. Alice has aspergers, you see. So, when a body is found on the site of her beehives, Alice is the prime suspect and she decides to do her own investigation to clear her bees and her name.

I loved reading about Alice's job and I definitely learned some stuff about beekeeping that I didn't think I would ever get to know about otherwise. That was very fun.

This book wasn't groundbreaking or anything but I had a pretty good time with it. I thought the writing was really well done, the pacing of the story was pretty equal from beginning to end. I loved trying to figure out the clues at the same time as Alice. Definitely didn't expect the plot twist and that was fun. I liked this book enough to be glad I'd gotten the other two.

A little abrupt, but at the end of the day, a good cozy mystery. I appreciated the issues the FMC dealt with and loved all the beekeeping information that was threaded throughout the story. The mystery was compelling and the killer wasn't immediately obvious. My only complaint is that the plotting felt off. Yes, I know it's a cozy mystery and the style is to explore the MC's life before killing anyone, BUT since this is a fairly short novella, I the first body should have been found much sooner.

I plan on reading the next book in this series.

Enjoyable clean sweet cozy mystery set in Christchurch with a likeable main character who was diagnosed later in life with Asperger’s syndrome. Alice’s relationship with her girls (bees) is touching – as well as her deep attachment to her grey-muzzled old pooch. I wasn’t particularly fond of any other characters and the mystery itself wasn’t all that remarkable, but still a great read. Below is a gluten-free cake recipe from the story; I’ve never seen a recipe presented in this manner. Interesting!

The recipe Alice settled on needed a few tweaks, due to seasonal variation. Although her berry bushes would soon be burgeoning with fruit, for the time being, she had nothing fresh.
Instead of the six ounces of raspberries the recipe called for, she substituted with the last of the previous year’s blueberries, still lurking in her freezer. Once she checked them over for burn marks, they seemed in good enough condition to do the trick.
Alice also substituted the orange for a lemon. She didn’t like the taste of oranges, being forced to swallow glasses of the pithy juice as a child had forever tainted it with bitterness in her mind. The sharp tang of fresh lemon from the bush outside her window though? That worked out far better.
With the fruit substitutions made, Alice worked quickly to bring the rest of the ingredients together. Two cups of almond flour formed the base—guaranteed gluten-free. She wasn’t as sure about the makeup of her baking powder, so just doubled the baking soda to one full teaspoon and added a half teaspoon of cream of tartar as the acid.
Although her spice cupboard needed a spring top-up, Alice found a half teaspoon each of cardamom, ginger, and fine-ground sea salt to add to the mix.
In a separate bowl, Alice beat together four eggs fresh from her backyard hens, Clucky and Nesting. Then she added the spotlight ingredient to any of her baking—the honey produced by the hard work of her bees.
The recipe called for two-thirds of a cup, but Alice upped that by a few tablespoons to offset the sour tang of the zest of one large lemon. A dollop of olive oil to make the honey up to a full cup, then she stirred the wet ingredients gently into the dry before adding the partially defrosted blueberries into the mix.
Even before the batter went into the oven, the cake smelled incredible. Alice’s mouth watered as she set the timer for forty minutes at three hundred and twenty-five degrees.

A quick little story with a lot of punch. I loved Alice who is the main character, and I’m quite positive that she is the only main character in all the cozy mysteries I’ve read (and there have been LOTS of them) who has Asperger Syndrome. It was delightful and also educational to see the world through her eyes and follow her train of thought. In many ways, she had an innocent and childlike view of things, but it was apparent that she was also very smart and talented too. It was a very positive depiction of a person with Asperger Syndrome, and I couldn’t help to be both sad and happy about her. Sad because of the many times it was alluded to the fact that she wasn’t treated well all of the time and earlier in her life, and that she doesn’t like to be touched and that, even though she does have friends, she sounded like she was little lonely.

The story itself, even though it was very short, had lots of twists and turns especially at the end, and some surprises. The mystery was solved in this book, but I could see the basis for the next book in the series getting its foundation laid out at the very end. I am going to read book 2 immediately!

The Buzz Kill, The Honeybee Mysteries, #1
by Katherine Hayton

This was a low key, enjoyable cozy mystery. Not a lot of obvious danger to the main character. In fact, she probably faces more danger tending her bees than from the suspects in the story. The action is all passive. Plotting and pacing are excellent, and there are several twists and turns that keep you guessing as to whodunit until very close to the end. No cliffhanger ending. Except for one glaring proofing/editing error, I saw nothing else out of place. The error I did see was a dozy, however: At location 952 (Kindle), while the main character, Alice Townsend, is thinking about the wife of the murdered man, this: "...Alice mused, thinking back to Alice's disorder." Umm, no, Betsy is the one with celiac disease.

I enjoyed this book, but I didn't love it, nor am I anxious to know more about Alice's life. I doubt I'll go looking for the others in the series, but if they happen to pop up on my free/low cost lists, I'll definitely get them.

The honey trap

The heroine has asperger's and finds contact with people difficult but not when it comes to her dog and the hives she cares for. Having moved some hives to an area that has no residents due to a recent earthquake she is stunned when, she is told the next day, that a body has been found there. With the result that her honey bees are being viewed as a murder weapon. Can she with her rather severe attitude to people uncover any clues that would clear her bees? Okay the plot was thinking with some gaping procedural pointers being ignored but the writer's treatment of a sufferer of asperger's is wonderful. Having met some parents that think its a slur it's great to see it as just another way for humans to be different from each other like hair colour.

Loved it all

First cozy out of hundreds, except for the car cozies, that I liked everything and the charactars. Reminded me of myself in some ways. Glad I tried this series great cover art too.

The author is not easy to contact. Her website is very lacking in information and a facebook seems to be a fan managed page. I don't have facebook so I can't even post asking for more in this and the other series of hers that I like. She seems to just write a few stories in a series and then stops. Which really is annoying and very sad when you enjoy them so much.

I hope that someone can contact her at her facebook and ask her to join goodreads and write more in this and the kitten cafe series.

Bees

Alice sets up bee hives in the park and the next day the body of a murdered man is found with the hives disturbed. It looks as if the man was allergic to the bees but, he had ingested cyanide.

Alice feels responsible for her bees and to help them settle in, she decides to visit the widow and just !keeps getting pulled deeper and deeper into the case.

Alice is autistic and sees things differently than most people and the reader gets some insights into the workings of her mind and how she copes with the world around her. The other characters are also treated well. The mystery takes a few twists and kept me guessing til the end.

A fast moving, enjoyable, quick read.

Love stories with bees in it!!!!

10 stars!!!!
I love Alice's knowledge of bees and how she handles her problems.
She is put through a lot with trouble near her bees that she just moved.
Doug her helper, and Sally her partner in THE BUMBLING BUMBLEBEE CAFE to sell her honey and honey made products.
I couldn't read fast enough, so I didn't sleep much to finish and was mad it ended to soon.
You will love this book.
Hurry up a get the next book done.
I want to know about her dog and the talk at the school.

Nice twist with the victim!
This was my first Katherine Hayon read and I enjoyed it. Nice strong character development. She really got the psyche of the main characters. Smooth way that Alice was brought into this investigation, so to speak. Great understanding and research on bees.

Only not positive comment would be the ending. The investigation was closed and yet the novel went on to finish the story about Alice's dog Chester and give a prelude to what might come next. I felt like that last chapter was like "oh wait. let me finish Chester's story".

Sweet first book the series

Alice, a 35+ Christchurch native is a bee keeper, partner in a cafe and gift shop, and cook She also has Aspergers syndrome, which is a high functioning level of autism.

As a former teacher of special needs students, I was thrilled to see how the author portrayed Alice. This novella should be required reading for all teachers!

The storyline moved quickly, and drew one in. I also learned a great deal about bees and beekeeping. A well written, short book that was perfect for a rainy day. Now on to Book 2!

Alice, a middle-aged bee-keeper and cafe owner with Asperger's Syndrome, is afraid that her bees are the cause of a man's death. But it seems to be poison rather than bee stings that did him in. When she goes to visit the widow, she meets their argumentative neighbor and the husband's girl friend before leaving. Each eventually imparts information that could implicate them. Alice passes everything she hears along to the Detective Sergeant on the case. There is a side plot involving Alice's old dog that is heartwarming. A simple charming mystery.

Quick read, as billed. Alice is an autistic apiarist who also co-runs a honey-themed bakery with the products from her bees. When her bees are deemed the culprit in a man's murder, she is determined to clear them so that the police will get off the bees' home turf and leave them be. (**spoiler alert)Not being a detective, Alice bebops around from suspect to suspect, in fact blaming several before the victim turns up quite alive (identity swap).
Says no cliff hangers, but what about Chester?!

Oh my. Where to start? The main character in this simplistic story is an autistic beekeeper. The author has never heard of the word subtlety, so she riddles this character with over-the-top mannerisms and thought patterns that reek of cliche. The dialogue and by-the-book plot points are just clunky, and the book abruptly ends with a subplot involving a dog still unresolved. On the plus side, I learned a little bit about bees.

Lovely and enjoyable

Alice has Asberger Syndrome, but that doesn't seem to prevent her from investigating a mystery that involves her beloved bees. I found this to be a lovely, thoughtful book with a great many twists and turns. I look forward to reading future tales of Alice and her friends, whether human, canine or bees.

It's All The Buzz

It's so unusual to read a book in which the protagonist has the kind of handicap Alice had. The information about bees was most interesting also. The only thing that rang false was the mistaken identity of the body. Wouldn't his wife have identified him or wouldn't blood work during autopsy show it wasn't Russell? Good story, good characters overall.

Really enjoyed this book

It was great to read about Christchurch after the earthquake. We saw some of the damage last December. It was also great to have a protagonist who is autistic. Three of my great nephews are also autistic and it helps to understand how their perceptions work. A very interesting read.

Yea for the bees

I loved the fact that the protagonist is a beekeeper! I love bees and hearing honeybees spoken of in a positive light was delightful. The story was a fast easy read. Good plot with good characters. A protagonist who is on the autistic spectrum is also a positive. I will be reading more books by this author and already bought the next book in the series.

Great series................

I'm very fascinated by the characters in the stories told by the author, they leave me with my mind full of images of very different people. I have a grandson who is blind and autistic and when you talk of some of her reactions I see him some. I love the way the author seems to be inside a character living there thoughts.

A brain that buzzes like the hive

This view of life through the eyes of an autistic woman and how she learns to deal with the unexpected onslaughts of every day life is entertaining and gave me an appreciation of the difficulties she deals with. The bee keeping aspect is informative. I was sorry to come to the last page.

I liked this one.

I like mysteries. I liked this one in particular because it features an autistic women and the author gets it right, and because the woman doesn't turn out to be a super sleuth and gets it wrong occasionally. She is calm, stubborn and very dogged. Very cosy mystery.

All the Buzz

I have been exploring cozy mysteries and I am a beekeeper, so this was a great match for me. Alice, who is on the Asberger scale, made for an interesting sleuth. I recommend it his book if you are looking for a quick and enjoyable read that doesn't demand much from you.

This was a short, almost novella sized cozy mystery about a bee keeper. I was interested enough to want more from this story but hopefully in a longer, less rushed format. This one had all the twists of a good mystery but with whiplash pacing. I often thought the mystery was solved only to see it was yet another twist and I was flipping back to make sure I hadn’t missed something.

Read as part of First in a Series collection on KU
Was pretty cute, in that small town mystery kind of way. You expect the police to be a little useless and the main character to need to be involved to solve the murder in what I’m calling ‘The Jessica Fletcher effect,’ but it had autistic rep and was better than so many.

Fascinating

Beautifully-written story about an autistic woman who is a beekeeper. Since I have no particular interest in either autism or bees, I wasn't optimistic about the story, but it's really wonderful. And I learned a lot.
