A diary record of the professional tennis star's thoughts and activities during one year of world travel and competition, covers championship matches, world politics, personal opinions, and fellow tennis players
African American tennis player Arthur Robert Ashe, Junior, first won the singles championship of open of United States in 1968 and the title of Wimbledon in 1975.
I love a memoir, I liked this one. It’s not a narrative like others I really love, it’s literally just Arthur Ashe’s daily journal for one random year of his life, so it took me a long time to get through it. It can get a little monotonous, but that IS regular life, even if you’re a professional tennis player. There’s a lot of meandering thoughts on world politics, tennis, other players, etc. and you really only get snapshots, not complete stories since the timeline was limited to a year. The best part by far was the end when he got back to Wimbledon in 1974 (and the epilogue chapter was fantastic).
A year in the life of Arthur Ashe. I never knew how much traveling these guys did. I wonder if it has changed A lot since the 70's. A lot of insight in life he lived.
I remember doing a book report on Arthur Ashe in 8th grade and this book was so helpful! It was quite entertaining to read about his life and the fact that he kept a diary was pretty cool.
I read this book in 1975. An insiders view of the pro tennis circuit. I enjoyed his book at that age. A tame version of life on the road/tour. The PG version.
