Busy tracking down thieving werewolves in London, Clemeny is surprised when Edwin asks her to lead a new case in the Fenlands of east England.

The Cabell family is haunted by a curse. Something in the misty moors surrounding Cabell Manor has come howling just days before the exclusive All Hallows Ball. How gauche. But London's best agent is on the case.

Clemeny soon finds herself learning the ropes of polite society while hunting an apparition on the foggy fens. She'll need to solve the case quickly if she hopes to be the belle--not the bruiser--of the ball.

A Paranormal cozy mystery. A very solid installment for the Red Cape Society. The romance is beginning to heat up a bit more for Red, and there's only one more book in this series!

Karsak's writing is well balanced. The mood is atmospheric without being heavy, and comfortable without being predictable. The stakes do not overwhelm the story, helping it keep the small-town cozy vibes. There are always several surprises and twists in every story. There are fun references that make it enjoyable to read and don't overwhelm the daily-life-of-an-investigator aspect.

I can't wait to find out who Clemeny Louvel (red) meets on her next case!

I stumbled across this as a KU freebie, and said Yes Please! because of the cover. I can't help it... It's spooky steampunk Halloween story and I just wanna read it. But it is the FIFTH book in a series, I quickly found out.

I actually found it to be very entertaining. I had to fill in a lot of the pieces since I don't have any context here for this character progression. Our main girl, Clemeny, is a werewolf hunter. She carries guns and knives, and rides a motorbike. SHE'S COOL AF . And apparently she misses or is still traumatized by whatever happened in Egypt, because she constantly says it in this book. I mean, it must be crazy because I think it's like 30% of her narrative. Annnnyway... there's this ball coming up, and this rich old lady who is tired of her house being haunted. Surprise, it's some werewolves. Main character does the things to hunt out the baddies, but really the main story line here is who will she choose in her love triangle. I don't really have a dog in this fight, since I don't know the characters. *shrug*

I enjoyed the book. I think this series would be a lot of fun to read! And as it was a novella, very short and quick. While it's sort of stand alone, I think I miss a lot by not following the rules and reading this in sequence.

Story is 4 stars, writing is 2.

I wish the author would let me beta read for her. One chapter started with the statement that it was taking most of the afternoon to get somewhere and on the second page of the chapter it said THE VERY SAME THING AT THE BOTTOM.

"It was enormous. And as we lowered toward the ground, I could see that the grounds surrounding the place were massive."
Split into two sentences and using the word ground back to back, though with different meanings, is so annoyingly repetitive. A mistake this author makes A LOT.

I really like this series but the quality of writing is why I gave it 2 stars. This author has written several books and still there are so many amateur mistakes. This novel felt a bit longer than the previous ones.

Series: Steampunk Red Riding Hood #5
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

Clemeny’s new case takes her to the country to break a curse on the Cabell family. When not hunting the creature, Clemeny has to deal with high society and Agent Hunter’s family friends.

This was a fascinating adventure for Clemeny because it shows us that it isn’t only the city that has monster problems. I really enjoyed seeing more of this world and how adaptable Clemeny, and Agent Harper, were to dealing with other creatures. The action isn’t as heavy in this one but I still enjoyed seeing Clemeny deal with monsters.

Clemeny’s relationship with Agent Hunter changes in this one. She sees how he acts when he is in his Sir Edwin Hunter role and it wasn’t very accepting or pleasant for her. While I did like Agent Hunter, his actions in this book were a huge red flag and made me not like him very much.

Overall, this was another wonderful adventure for Clemeny. I do hope we get to see more of Agent Harper in the next one because I think she is a great partner for Clemeny. I can’t wait to see what is going to happen in the next book now that Lionheart is back.

Finally! All I can say is finally. Karsak really used this book to push a lot the character development. The supernatural subplot took a bit of backseat while Clem figured out her own personal next steps. I think it worked for this installment in the series. Looking forward to the conclusion.

Finally Clemeny gets want she didn't even know she wanted!

Clemeny goes to an All Hallows Ball and the supernatural are all out in force. Will she complete her mission or get overthrown by all the spirits?

As, I've said before this is a great series! What more could you ask for with all the unnatural creatures?

This is my honest review.

A spooky Little Red just in time for Halloween! With each steampunk tale intriguingly unique, and enigmatic characters that keep you coming back time after time, this series is a hit. The lyric beauty of the writing constantly has me reading passages aloud to my wife like any good faily tale is meant to be read. What more could one ask.

Clemeny Louvel has settled Grand Mere into the new house. She hated the fabrication of having saved enough money to purchase it out of her wages, but could never divulge to Grand Mere that their home was bought for her by a man, and certainly not a werewolf.

With the Red Cape Society as Little Red, Agent Louvel is quite pleased to have Harper back and assigned as her partner on a permanent basis. Things have been fairly quiet in London. The Beta of the Templars has done a good job of keeping everything in order.

Agent Hunter has been very attentive. Even though not officially affianced, they are attached, no longer hiding their attractions from others even at work.

If only it were so easy to forget about Lionheart! Clemeny can't get him out of her head. If he would simply come back perhaps things could be settled.

This new case could prove a distraction. Off to the country with Harper to protect a cursed family, or to be sure that their All Hallows Ball goes off without a hitch. After all it is THE event of the season. What is a curse compared with a social outing to the gentry? It is up to Louvel and Harper to save the day.

Will the duo be able to foil a curse that has been lurking up the family tree, before All Hallows Eve? Can Clemeny uncover the truth behind the curse? Is there any way to reverse it? Will Clemeny really attend the ball with Edmond? Will Lionheart return? Grab Howls and Hallows to find out.

In this Halloween story we find Clemy in search of a curse, a haunting and still town between two possible lovers. This story was a slow burn mystery and it was fantastic! I did not see the ending coming; it kept me guessing for the entire story.

Clemy finds herself in the Fenlands of east England in search of answers to a centuries old curse. Edwin (her boss and possible love) has asked her to help out some old friends, The Cabell family. Clemy and Harper are tasked with providing answers and protection so that family’s “famous” All Hallows Ball can proceed on schedule.

With howling being heard each night and the moors filling up with mist, Clemy and her partner Harper, get more than they bargained for with this case. Filled with interesting characters, a setting to rival old Gothic stories, action, humor and a sassy leading lady, this is a favorite story for all to enjoy. I don’t want to give any spoilers away, but let me just say that I loved this Sherlock Homes (Hounds of the Baskerville) inspired story. It fit well with the other stories in this series and as a standalone. The thing that excited me the most was that Clemy FINALLY chooses her love and I was so very happy with her choice (I have been waiting for a while for that answer)!

With the story setting in Gaslamp London, the 19th century steampunk and the character of Clemy this story is one for all to read. It is safe with adventure and a strong, independent women lead that will leave any reader excited for more. As with this entire series (The Steampunk Red Riding Hood), I am buying this as gifts for all of my nieces and nephews. I received an ARC an am leaving an honest review.

Oranges and Lemons, Clemeny!

Clemeny Louvel is my absolute favorite of Melanie Karsak’s protagonists: a kickass, smartmouth female werewolf hunter in an alternative, steampunk Victorian England, Clemeny is an agent of the Red Cape Society, the secret law enforcement agency, chartered with keeping Her Majesty’s realm safe from monsters and demons and things that go bump in the night.

Clemeny and her partner, Elaine Harper, are, in fact, the Red Cape Society’s *top* agents, and after saving the Crown Jewels from thieving werewolves, they are sent to a manor hpuse to investigate some mysterious goings on which are threatening to disrupt the snooty lady of the manor’s upcoming All Hallows Ball.

With echoes of The Hound of the Baskerville, and Downton Abbey, Clemeny finds herself navigating preternaturals, snobby upper class landowners, and her own conflicted romantic feelings (read the previous books in the series to catch up here!)

Like all classic fairytale heroes, Clemeny knows when proper reverence is required. She may be a smartass, but her innate goodness saves that ass when her pistol won’t do the job.

My only frustration with this book was the romantic triangle, as I felt rather sad for the loser, who’d been built up quite a bit in previous installments. But we shall see how it plays out in the next (and apparently final—sniff!) volume.

Other than that, the story was intriguing, and Clemeny’s character and dialogue were delightfully irreverent, as always (Harper is terrific, too!)

I don’t want this series to end! Long live Clemeny Louvel!

Clemeny is a brave and smart agent of the Red Cape Society. As a favor to her boss Edwin, she agrees, along with agent Harper, to check out the goings on at Cabell Manor, home to Lord Edison Cabell and his sister Lady Charlotte, friends of Edwin. It seems the family curse has been activated again and Edison, as the heir, may be in big trouble.  Lady Charlotte would like this nasty business taken care of before the annual All Hallows Ball being held at the manor soon.

Howls are heard by just about everyone at that manor. There is more going on than meets the typical human eye, but Clemeny's mooneye can see just a bit more. She senses supernatural beings. The fen covered land complicates the investigation with wetlands and fog all around. The setting and the howls make for a creepy Halloween tale that is mysterious and fun.

Howls and Hallows is actually book 5 of the series. Because Halloween is right around the corner, I jumped right in with #5.  While I did feel I would have benefited from reading the rest of the series, there was plenty there to provide a complete story just perfect for Halloween week.  I am going back to book 1 now.

I love Melanie Karsak's steampunk stories and Howls and Hallows is a perfect addition to her repertoire. If you are looking for a sinister seasonal saga, I recommend Howls and Hallows.

I didn't enjoy this book really at all, the love triangle ruined most of it. Clemeny spends the whole book thinking about Lionheart and how she wished he would come back while at the same time, thinking about Edwin and how they are together. It eventually gets figured out in the end, but since that happened in a previous book, it might not be permanent. All that aside, I do think that Lionheart is a better fit for Clemeny and I feel like they have some chemistry. The only thing with Lionheart that confuses me is his relationship with Byrony, whom he says he wasn't romantically involved with. However, there is lots of flirting and some kissing between Byrony and Lionheart so it just feels like the author was confused about how she wanted things to happen in the overall love story of the series. Which explains Lionheart's confusing behavior and how there is no chemistry between Edwin and Clemeny and how it felt forced.
I did like that Harper came back and I wish that we could learn more about her and Alan Quartermain. I also wanted to know more abut Agent Rose. Basically, I want to know more about the more interesting characters and leave Clemeny to her love triangle.
Overall 2 out of 5 stars.

Agent Louvell and her new partner, Agent Harper are headed to the fens to hunt a werewolf... or something that howls. They arrive at Lord Cabell's home and are met by him and his sister, Lady Charlotte. Whereas Lord Cabell is nice, Lady Charlotte is very proper and seems to look down her nose at the agents sent to help. Regardless, they find out a little more about the things going on and are given the small library to use for work and also a shared bedroom. The first night at the witching hour they hear howling and go out to investigate. It takes several days before Clemeny has it figured out and she is able to send Agent Harper back to London the day after Edwin arrives. Unfortunately, Clemeny must stay as Edwin's date for the ball. His godmother will be there and he wants them to meet. Does that sound boring? I assure you it's not. It's an excellent cozy tale but I won't spoil it for you. I definitely suggest you read it yourself. I could barely put it down.

I adore Melanie Karsak's steampunk fairy tales. Interesting characters, amazing plots and exquisite storytelling make her books a true pleasure to read. Clemeny Louvel is a smart, kick-ass heroine who knows about the big bad things in the world. She fights them in her job as an agent for Her Majesty's Red Cape Society. Ms. Karsak creates a wonderful steampunk world and inhabits it with very realistic characters. Co-workers, neighbors, friends and family are well developed in her steampunk world. There are mysteries aplenty, action, parties and a dash of romance in these stories. I recommend them to anyone who likes to read a well written story.

This latest instalment in the Steampunk Red Riding Hood series is one of my favourite so far, and you can definitely see the author's love of gaslamp noir tales coming through, with its nod to the Sherlock Holmes story, The Hound of the Baskervilles. I loved the imagery used by the author throughout this story, she really brought the scenery and the atmospheric conditions to life in my mind, and I was so engrossed in the story, I was even more sad than usual when it ended! And with the events in this book, I cannot wait to see what happens to the characters next!! Highly recommended reading for all lovers of the series and the genre.

I liked the story and the characters, even if the writing was a bit repetitive.
The problem with this book is that I t can’t be read as a stand-alone story.
I’ve got it on KU and I didn’t know it was part of a series. There are many references to things that happened in the previous books ma there isn’t an explanation nor a brief summary.
Authors of series usually drop little informations here and there in every instalment to help new readers to better understand the whole story (I.e. Kate Daniels novels), I would have liked something like that here.

Howls and Hallows

Squeee!! I loved this book and I am beyond thrilled with the ending (insert happy dance here). My only complaint is that I want more!! I don't ever want the story to end. I hate that there is only one book left but I can't wait to see what comes next both in this story and with Karsak's other books. She is so incredibly talented and I have loved everything she has written. I highly recommend this book/series.

The author definitely needs a new editor. In addition, the author should spend more time editing her own work. Throughout the series, I've come across a number of basic spelling and grammatical errors. The writing has potential but needs to be polished.

I really like the story and characters - that's why my ratings are higher than what they should be. But the quality of writing in each book varies greatly.

Yay!! This book makes me so happy. I feel like I have been waiting forever for this to happen. We get to follow along with Clemeny on a new case to see if the curse is real. Agent Harper is back. This is another fun book with Clemeny. I loved the ending. I cannot wait for the last book to see how this will all end.

Two of my favorites.

I love Steampunk and alternate fairy tale. So Melanie Karsak is at the top of my reading list right now. I love how she takes the heroines and fleshes them out as strong, self reliant women. And Clemeny is my favorite. She knows what she wants and isn't willing to settle for safe. Please keep them coming!

I received an advanced copy and this is my honest review. I truly enjoyed this story. Clemeny is choosing between Hunter and Lionheart. She must also figure out who is after the Cabell family. Oranges and Lemons what is she going to do! Cannot wait for the next book. You will have to read the book to find out who she picks. Would recommend to all who love steampunk novels.

Must Read!!

The steampunk Red Riding Hood series is awesome! Little Red is a strong and brave heroine; she instills fear in the big bad wolves. She also has a tender side with complex emotions like the rest of us. Very easy to relate.

Ugg and aww and le sigh. I didn't get my ship, but I can't say I'm really mad about it. Assuming I get more books because I have questions and if I don't get my ship I at least deserve some closure!! I'm entirely too invested in this universe to be out of books!
