Nine months have passed since Grace Fortune saw the boy she loves, Jared Lorn, die before her eyes. But Grace’s suspicions have her wondering if Jared really dead. Along with her friends, she sets out to find answers, and the investigation leads to an unexpected place: Silo City, an abandoned silo complex that houses as many dark secrets as it does forsaken people.
Very much alive, Jared’s on a mission to save the girl he loves by collaborating with the enemy—a young, brash rock star named Lester Crow who fronts the punk metal band Blood Moon. Jared’s “deal with the devil” will take him on a cross-country journey into the heartland of darkness. The music of Blood Moon is a weapon against God, and Jared must wield this weapon while trying desperately to preserve his mind and soul from its power.
Jared and Grace are desperate to be reunited, but first, they must defeat the demonic forces arrayed against them. And pray that Jared, a Nephilim forsaken in God’s eyes, has a chance at a future.
Gina Detwiler was planning to be a teacher but switched to writing so she wouldn't have to get up so early in the morning. She is the author of the YA Supernatural FORLORN series and the co-author with Priscilla Shirer of the bestselling middle-grade fantasy series The Prince Warriors. She also wrote the Ultimate Bible Character Guide for LifeWay.
Under the name Gina Miani she wrote the women's novels AVALON and ANTILLIA and the historical novel THE HAMMER OF GOD.
Beautiful. This one was so much better then the first for me. I really enjoyed the duel POVs and felt like I got more of a feel for Jared’s character. I liked the flow of the story and the concept with angels and demons.
What an interesting book! This is a wonderful work of Christian fiction that hits on a few different subjects—you have romance at the root of this series but there’s also redemption, good versus evil, and the power of music. One of the most interesting aspects of this book is the music, but I won’t get into that just yet.
This is the first book I have ever read by Detwiler, so I was pleasantly surprised by the story and the writing. Forsaken is the second book in the series, I did not read the first installment, but I can’t say that hindered my understanding of the story or my connection to the characters. I enjoyed the romance between Jared and Grace, and I liked that they were tied to each other in multiple ways despite their distance. They weren’t just two kids in love, Jared and Grace were connected through music, their faith, and the battle they faced in trying to be together. Jared was a loveable character and certainly made me cheer for him—I have a weakness for fallen angels, and while Jared wasn’t exactly an angel kicked out of heaven, his backstory was similar in many ways and had a dark element of the battle in good versus evil.
Now I’d like to go back to my comment on the music in the series. Music plays a part in the book—Grace and her singing, Jared and his guitar—but there’s a message here for Christians and the music we listen to as well. Detwiler makes a clear connection between music and demonic oppression; some songs conjure evil spirits while others are harmless to listen to. The singer and the motives of the songwriter are also aspects that contribute to whether a song may negatively impact someone’s spiritual standing. While this isn’t exactly the case for every genre of music, it is certainly an interesting concept that every Christian should take seriously.
As a Believer, I don’t think Detwiler is too far off with this concept. Music is incredibly important, whether it is praise and worship or the latest Beyoncé hit, it has an effect on the listener. There are scriptures I can reference to demonstrate the importance of protecting ourselves from certain influencers such as what we listen to and what we allow ourselves to watch and read, but I’ll leave that to your next Sunday sermon. For now, I’ll say that Detwiler has opened the door on a previously unexplored concept—to the best of my knowledge at least. This part of the book is enough to keep me interested, but the rest of the story is just as satisfying.
I recommend this book to teens and young adult readers, but it will be best appreciated by young Christians. If you enjoy romance, fantasy, or supernatural novels you will certainly enjoy this series, but I’d say there’s enough here to keep any interested reader turning the pages.

This is a spoiler-free review! You can read my review of Forlorn on my blog, now!
I own this entire series (given to me as a gift) so I find myself needing the satisfaction of finishing what I started, even though my thoughts on Forlorn were less than favorable. The concept certainly has its moments and I can see the vision the author wanted to lay out for readers, but it feels chunky and the pacing was like walking through tar - I found myself pushing through simply to finally get it over with. While it has been a decent amount of time since I read the first installment, it is fairly easy to simply pick up right where you left off. As someone who typically does not read any reviews of books before I have completed them, I was surprised to see a number of reviews for Forsaken noting that people were simply skipping the first book entirely. I cannot imagine just not reading the first book in a series. That being said, the first book could have been a lot shorter and the point still would have been made.
I had an ounce of hope that this series would somewhat improve - whether it was the writing, the plot, the torturous text abbreviations - literally, anything. Unfortunately that was simply not the case and I found myself stuck in a trap of reading yet another prolonged plot that could have been half the length of this novel. While I can appreciate the author wanting to have a multitude of side plots for Grace and Jared, it was not necessary in order to tie their journeys together. It felt as though we were jumping around for the entirety of the book without being able to settle into a side plot before being ripped away from it.
Grace's ignorance is staggering and frankly it becomes detrimental to her characterization - you want to root for her, but considering her common sense is getting knocked out of her every other chapter, there is not much to root for. At least Jared has some problem-solving skills courses around in his head, though they are few and far between. I could not find myself able to honestly even care about these characters - there was nothing about them that had me emotionally attached to them as a couple or as individuals. It is not that are they "not interesting," but rather that I do not connect to them or their motivations throughout the book. They kind of blindly follow other people's instructions most of the time and it stressed me out on how slowly they worked towards their goals.
This second installment left me underwhelmed and reinforced my original sentiments towards the series that it simply may not be for me. I can definitely see the appeal for maybe a new adult crowd that has not meddled in a fantasy series before, but I would not be reaching for this over the blockbuster fantasy series that are in my typical rotation.

To some extent I’m still trying to sort out how I feel about Forsaken. I didn’t read Forlorn, the first in the series. Even though I was able to quickly understand what was going on without too many questions, I always believe it’s a good to start at the beginning of a series to get the full picture.
This story starts 9 months after Forlorn ends and Jared, one of two key leads from the first novel, is apparently dead. However, we soon discover he’s not which is a good thing as there wouldn’t really be a story without him.
He’s a good character as we see his struggle with his light and dark sides. He’s troubled, heroic, tender and loving but also full of a lot of angst as a result of who he is. He’s a Nephilim: half demon, half human. Accordingly, he has some ‘super’ powers that make him someone you don’t want to get angry. And he’s a great guitarist. It’s his guitar playing that leads to his identity being uncovered.
Grace Fortune was the lead singer in the band, Forlorn. And she’s Jared’s girlfriend. She thinks he’s dead and life as she knows it is wretched. However, she graduates from school and to her delight discovers Jared is alive. And back playing the guitar.
Lester Crow is a fabulous antagonist. He’s the archetypal punk metal lead singer who is constantly inebriated on booze and drugs. And he’s Jared’s nemesis. He suckers Jared into joining his band and this is when things get really exciting. There’s a crazy dynamic between the two – more than just your normal lead singer, lead guitarist rivalry. There’s an intensity that is super-charged by angelic forces: Lester’s demons and Jared’s angel friends (who happen to be the senior ones in the Angel Kingdom)
But it’s the two older dudes that perhaps I found most interesting. Ralph, who is a father/big brother to Jared and, Silas, friend to Jared and connected to Grace in some way. These two watch over the two young ones and provide spiritual wisdom and insight into what is going on around them.
Grace has an angel, Ariel, who is a ‘he’ but we don’t really see him. I presume he was more prominent in Book 1.
We have a story that explores redemption, good versus evil, a sweet romance, the influence of the demonic on music, and the power of music to heal and transform. There’s lots there that makes it a good read. Detwiler is clearly a very competent writer and the story moves with good pace after the initial 100 pages. It wraps up a little too neatly at the end that surprised me.
I found the angelic involvement a little confusing. They only appeared (both good and bad) occasionally and didn’t really have any role other than the demons hold over Crow. The good guys kept popping up reassuring Jared but we didn’t see any real action between the angelic and demonic. Accordingly, what we saw was more the typical angelic involvement that many such novels have rather than presenting them as fleshed out beings.
I hope there is a third in the series that perhaps involves more of the angelic interplay.
I feel like I had a lot of strong thoughts about this book. Some things I really liked a lot. The way the author describes music really pulled me into each scene. I loved that so much of the story followed Grace’s singing (or her inability to sing) and Jared’s talent with the guitar. I wanted to sit in on their jam sessions. The big concerts felt very realistic.
In terms of the spiritual elements, I struggled with some of the doctrine. Jared, the son of a powerful demon and a human woman, had a lot of questions about his value and identity. I like that he’s a complicated character, that he wants to do good and be good despite his origin. Honestly, I think that’s pretty relatable. I don’t think it’s something that’s within the bounds of Christian ideology, though.
Music in the story has a strong spiritual component. I thought this was also pretty cool to show this spiritual component to songs depending on who’s playing them, what the songs glorify, and the motives of the musicians playing them. Early on in FORSAKEN, a mentor character shares a theory that the Beatles and the Rolling Stones artists were Satanists. He cites some interesting evidence.
I looked it up because I wasn’t sure if it was supposed to be an in-the-book thing or a this-is-real thing. The individual things the character points out are true (an occult founder being pictured on an album cover and some lyrics about Lucifer), I felt like those were probably things the artists used for their shock value. I didn’t see any indication that the artists themselves had any real love or worship for Satan, so I had a hard time following that thread of the plot.
Sometimes I felt like I had missed something – I think because I started reading this series with book two. I think FORSAKEN makes a good choice for TWILIGHT or BEAUTIFUL CREATURES fans or readers who like a sweet paranormal romance. I’d recommend starting with the first book, FORLORN.
Gina Detwiler is the author of the YA Supernatural series FORLORN and is co-author with Priscilla Shirer of the bestselling middle-grade fantasy series, THE PRINCE WARRIORS. Her non-fiction books include The Ultimate Bible Character Guide and The Ultimate Bible Character Devotional. She's written novels for adults, including HAMMER OF GOD and AVALON, under the name Gina Miani.
Gina Detwiler’s FORSAKEN is Book 2 in the FORLORN series. It’s an excellent Christian fantasy that will grab readers and hurl them far beyond the boundaries of our limited world. This YA fantasy has intriguing twists and turns that will easily captivate the reader from the first page to the last. Although the book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. However, I would highly recommend starting with book 1 in the series FORLORN.
In summarizing the synopsis, we find that Grace Fortune watched her boyfriend, Jared Lorn, die nine months ago. Grace doubts Jared's death. She and her friends investigate Silo City, an abandoned silo complex with dark secrets and abandoned people… Jared is alive and working with the enemy, Blood Moon frontman Lester Crow, to save the girl he loves. Jared's "deal with the devil" will take him cross-country into darkness. Jared must use Blood Moon's music to fight while defending his mind and soul… Jared and Grace desperately want to be reunited, but first, they must overcome the demonic powers, and pray for God-forsaken Nephilim Jared's future…
If you are looking for a well-written and exceptional fantasy book with unforgettable characters and a gripping plot, Gina Detwiler’s FORSAKEN will not disappoint you. It’s a Y/A fantasy that maintains a compelling hold from start to finish. Highly recommended and a well-deserved five stars from me.
I'm still trying to sort out how I feel about this book. Even though I jumped into the series with book two, it grabbed my attention and I really wanted to find out what happened (which I consider the mark of a good story). It was easy to come in at book two and figure out what was going on as well as developing connections with the characters. The story, however, let me down a bit in the last 1/4. It felt a little rushed and didn't really set up another book. I assume there will be a book three, but there was no lead in for one. If the series ended now, it wouldn't be completely resolved, but there's sort of a happy ending so you wouldn't need to keep reading. Overall, I give the story 3.5 stars because it DID grab me and pull me in, though I ended it feeling a little underwhelmed. (If there IS a book three, I'm sure I'll read it to see what happens.)
Forsaken is a very entertaining and captivating book. This is book number two in the Forlorn series and it tells the story of Grace and Jared and their struggle to discover the truth, save their lives, and be together again. I enjoyed the mixture of reality and the fantastic world created by the author. I really liked the way this book is written and how the plot unfolds and guides the reader through thrilling and emotional events until its exciting end. Another thing that I found interesting is that music is woven into the plot and it permeates the story making it even more compelling. The characters are especially well created and developed. Although they have fantastic characteristics, they are believable and clever. I strongly recommend this series and this last instalment in particular.
This was a good story about Grace who watched the love of her life Jared die in fire along with the demon Azazel who was his father. As Grace tries to deal with the death she begins to doubt Jared really died and starts to investigate the silo city and the secrets it hides. Jared is alive and well and on a crash course with his destiny to destroy the evil deal he has made while trying to save his soul. Demonic battles, forbidden love, and a desire to win are what fuel this story with action and adventure through out the journey. I found the story to be well written with developed characters and an easy to follow fast paced storyline. Check this one out if you like supernatural or love interest action journey. This one has something for everyone.
This was definitely better than the first book in so many ways!
It's a much darker themed story that centers mainly on Jared this time.
Shannon is out for vengeance against Ralph, Jared, and Grace. Even going as far as attempting to kill Grace in a satanic ritual!
Jared joins a heavy metal band against his will because the lead singer, Lester Crow, is using Grace against him. Threatening him that his Satanic goon fan base will hurt her.
They go on this drug, sex, alcohol influenced tour with Jared as their "Angel". Gaining more popularity and fame for their crazy antics. Jared has to keep himself guarded from the dark side and he has the help from the Angels this time.
Where will the story go from here? I definitely can't wait to find out!

The first thing that I want to clear out is that I haven't read the first book and even so I have understood this book perfectly. In turn, I think that if I read the first book (which I will), I will find a much deeper meaning of it. Forsaken by Gina Detwiler is the second book in the Forlorn series. It develops around Jared, supposedly dead, and Grace, his heartbroken girlfriend, who doubts his death and will do everything to find him. I liked this fantasy with a touch of "thriller" and plenty of adventures and emotions. Even though it seems too personal, I think the author really tries to convey the feelings of each character. I recommend it for young people who enjoy a good fantasy novel.
I have always been a fan of paranormal books especially if the characters are in between young adult to adult. Forsaken by Gina Detwiler is a book that I would immediately dive into the moment I read the synopsis and see the cover. At first when I saw the cover I thought this book is a modern contemporary romance book about rock stars and musicians but when I read the synopsis and delved into the book, I was amazed to find out that it was more than that. The story highlights characters Grace Fortune and Jared Lorn. Together they defy their fate by crossing paranormal worlds. If you fancy demons who fall in love with humans, well this book is for you. It did brought different emotions to me in the end. It was written spectacularly.
Forsaken by Gina Detwiler is a unique read that is as thrilling as dark from start to finish. Grace Fortune is grieving for the love of her life, Jared Lorn. Even though Jared passed in front of Grace, she cannot help but have her suspicious of his death. Grace, with her intuition and her friends, sets out to investigate and lands in a Silo complex full of dark secrets. 5 is alive and is on his mission to save himself and his love from being destroyed. The aura of the darkness and secrets is amazing and binds the reader intently all along. I was captivated with the storyline and its well-executed characters. Grace is my favorite character; I enjoyed her personality. A well written and brilliant fantasy, I highly recommend it.
"Forsaken" is the second book in the Forlorn saga; in this original book, the author Gina Detwiler introduces us to Grace Fortune and Jared Lorn, two young lovers. But not everything is rosy pain, Grace saw Jared die, but her doubts about whether he is still alive will lead her to an adventure like no other. Being able to meet her love again is her great desire, could she do it?
With an exceptional writing style and above all a great storytelling style, Gina Detwiler makes the reader enjoy the story from the moment the reader opens the cover until they finish reading it. I certainly recommend this novel of love, mystery and adventure.
I have a deep love for Gina Detwiler’s stories. They are absolutely compelling and full of adventure. This one in particular is captivating to the same extent. I was really surprised at the mystery reveal, what a good twist, and the showdown was exciting. There had been quite a bit of good suspense throughout the book, I’ve to say that the first-person narrative was able to present the different characters and their actions in the best possible way. Even to know their thoughts and inner feelings makes the reader to interact with them to a different level. I can say that it was the kind of book I couldn’t put down.
I was super excited about a fantasy Christian series. The first book really helped strengthen my prayer life. I was excited about what this book would hold. Unfortunately, I felt like it was not as spiritually outpouring as the first book. I was extremely disappointed that there was cussing in this book. I went from recommend the series to not being able to because of this. At the end of the book, a playlist for the series is advertised. In the first book, the author talks about how secular music can negatively affect your life. Yet this playlist is full of secular music. I fear as the story continues that it will stray from what it started out to do. Spread the love of God.
I haven't yet read the first book in this series, although I certainly plan to after this. But although events from that book are referenced in that one, I never felt lost and was able to keep up with the sorry just fine.
Forsaken is a lovely story about the battle between good and evil, both in the spiritual realm and within the human heart. Although dark at times, there's a thread of hope and redemption that runs through the book, which is a thoroughly enjoyable read. I'm looking forward to exploring more of Find Detailer's work.
She had watch him die before her eyes. As time goes along she begins to wonder if he is really alive. He made a deal with the devil and he needs to try not to let it destroy him. Will they be able to reconnect to each other? How will it all work? Follow their adventures
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The author has given us an excellent second book in the series. Initially she thinks he is dead but begins to think maybe that isn't the case. She eventually finds out he is alive. They have to defeat the evil that is jeopardizing their lives if they want to move on with their relationship. A very well written drama filled with memorable characters and a very intriguing storyline.
I hate starting a series in the middle. Enjoyed all the characters and the rock scene reinforces my inclination to stay away from those types of gatherings--too crowded, too noisy, and too much bad behavior (actually, I've heard the parents at concerts for children also act shamefully!). Character development really stands out here.
Book 2 of the series. I enjoyed it even more than the first. Fun to read a book that takes place in our hometown. She does a great job of bringing Buffalo to life.
I really liked the first book in this series, but this one was even better. At the end of book one, Jared, a main character, was killed off....and then it was revealed that he was not dead. Book two begins with Grace still believing he is dead.
Detwiler has done a great job on creating some great likable characters, and character development. In my opinion, none are as likable as Jared. Half angel, half human, doomed from his birth, yet determined to do right and fight evil with all he has in him. In both books the author switches back and forth between first and third person point of view, but I Jared was only third person in the first book. In book two, he has a lot of first person point of view, which is cool as you get to see what he is thinking and going through better.
I'll do my best to avoid giving away any spoilers, but I will say I kept wishing the author would move something along faster, but then it did make a climatic moment when it finally happened.....so I guess she knew what she was doing. :)
This book gives an interesting look at the possible link between some kinds of music and demon possession and how the devil can use that music. I am no fan of rock music, and believe it is not for Christians, but I don't think the author is trying to say all rock music is connected to the devil and demon possession. And what happens in the book and the effects of certain kinds of music on people may not happen exactly the way it is portrayed, but it is food for thought.
Forsaken was even more suspenseful than Forlorn, and it had its share of surprises and kept me guessing as to what would happen next. I don't know where the author is headed with Jared, who wonders if redemption for someone like him is possible and if God can love him, but I guess that will be addressed more in the next two books in the series which I am looking forward to reading when they are released.
These are books for teen readers, so I was bothered more than usual by a few words I don't like to see in Christian books: pissed, ass, and I think damn. But overall this book and the one before are very awesome reads, and as I said in the previous book review, similar to Frank Peretti's earlier books with his battle between angels and demons.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
