About the author

Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Oda hits harder with the emotion than probably anyone else in the business. He knows how to set up a scene to be felt in a certain way by the reader; a skill not enough author's have.

Poor Chopper's flashback is, I think, my absolute favourite in the story and one of the few times in all of fiction to reliably make me tear up a bit. Oda is good at conveying character histories and arc themes through his backstories, but here I think he hits the right notes the best: it's pretty deep and complex without going as over-the-top with misery as some of the later ones do, and Chopper's own mistaken actions lead an extra layer of tragedy that many others miss.

Bit of a shame that the story would soon relegate him into a cutesy comic-relief: there's a great deal of depth and sadness to him that isn't shown in the story nearly as much as I'd have liked.

Este es de los volúmenes que rompen mi corazoncito, acá ya se ahonda más en la historia de Chopper. De cachorro siendo despreciado y luego comiéndose la ito ito no mi peor. (Paréntesis que mala fruta xd a chopper le sirve pero tener los poderes de un humano jajajaja)

I am awestruck and deeply unwell. The characters, world building, and overall messaging of this story is truly something special. Emotionally, this hit harder than possibly anything else I have ever read in my life 😭

Although I doubt I have even an ounce of a grasp on where this story is going, I do feel like I’m starting to spot some important plot threads, which is super exciting as a reader. I’m honestly just so happy I decided to sign up for this adventure and I can’t wait to experience more of Oda’s storytelling brilliance. Wow.

This volume marks the point where I can say with 100% confidence I hadn't read it before. Here's to progress!

Luffy and Sanji's trip up, and down, and back up, the mountain in the first couple chapters here was one of the funnier things I've seen in this manga thus far. Great slapstick. :)

Luffy and Sanji continue their insane route to finding the witch that can save their friend while encountering King Wapol and his crew who wish their demise.

I can't lie that it was a helluva labor just to get through this story arc. It's not that it's bad or anything, it just decided to go down a path that completely put aside the main cast to dive into the cute and tragic origin story of some very odd characters.

Whew the pacing in this one is all over the map! It was such a whiplash going from past to present. Sometimes the story feels silly and other times it's serious. Chopper definitely had it rough out there thinking he was saving his friend when in reality he was doing the opposite. Really beautiful storytelling, probably one of my favorites. The "bad guy" is probably my least favorite though and the whole 20 doctors-like what is going on? 😂

DRUM ISLAND ARC - PART 2
1. luffy turning his anger and fight lust and his personal motives down to instead focus on what nami needs, is why luffy is liked. not only is he able to be carefree and encompass the childlike wonder that all people wanna hold on to, but his loyalty and his strength to show up for his friends make him admirable. and really, i am a fan of his, and i will always root for him.

2. usopp's nose being abused and stretched, effectively disfiguring his face, will never not be hilarious.

3. somehow only luffy and sanji combined are capable of wanting and TRYING to slaughter and cook their hosts (no matter whether there's a checkmark on if this host has sapience or not) (to be double fair - how would they know he achieved that by eating the human human fruit?)

4. dragon mentioned again! some revolutionary apparently, and against the government (fair, same). and nefertari cobra! that's vivi's dad, i assume? hihi, i'm following all the names at least!

Capítulo de flashback que nos sirve para conocer el transfondo de Chopper, que no es poco. Me gusta que hayamos vuelto a los temas más interesantes de One Piece, corrupción del poder, idealización del idealismo (valga la redundancia) y todo eso aderezado con un rey tonto, que si vien no me interesa lo más minimo me hace especial gracia porque en mi cabeza es así por fruto de generaciones de endogamia.

Also la tripulación, que sigue siendo tontísima, no tiene a Nami para aportar cordura y se les va de las manos. Me encanta.
