Born Dhanpat Rai, he began writing under the pen name "Nawab Rai", but subsequently switched to "Premchand", while he is also known as "Munshi Premchand", Munshi being an honorary prefix. A novel writer, story writer and dramatist, he has been referred to as the "Upanyas Samrat" ("Emperor among Novelists") by some Hindi writers. His works include more than a dozen novels, around 250 short stories, several essays and translations of a number of foreign literary works into Hindi.
Premchand is considered the first Hindi author whose writings prominently featured realism. His novels describe the problems of the poor and the urban middle-class. His works depict a rationalistic outlook, which views religious values as something that allows the powerful hypocrites to exploit the weak. He used literature for the purpose of arousing public awareness about national and social issues and often wrote about topics related to corruption, child widowhood, prostitution, feudal system, poverty, colonialism and on the India's freedom movement.
Several of his early works, such as A Little Trick and A Moral Victory, satirised the Indians who cooperated with the British colonial government.
In the 1920s, he was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi's non-cooperation movement and the accompanying struggle for social reform. During this period, his works dealt with the social issues such as poverty, zamindari exploitation (Premashram, 1922), dowry system (Nirmala, 1925), educational reform and political oppression (Karmabhumi, 1931).
In his last days, he focused on village life as a stage for complex drama, as seen in his most famous work Godan as well as the short-story collection Kafan (1936).Premchand believed that social realism was the way for Hindi literature, as opposed to the "feminine quality", tenderness and emotion of the contemporary Bengali literature.

Read this in my struggle towards getting a better grip on my mother-tongue.
I love Premchand's books for their simplicity of language and characters. This book was a big shocker. The writing did not feel like Premchand Ji's at all. None of the characters were simple. Your love and hate towards the characters will surely go vice-versa by the end.
More than 50% through, I couldn't figure what the main plot is about!
Interesting to see a revolutionary plot in a pre-independence India which is not about freedom struggle or related revolutions.
At times, the content was so heavy that I couldn't continue and needed a lighter read in between.
There are a lot of idealistic thoughts even valid till date. And that's the thing about Premchand - evergreen!
However could not enjoy this one as much as I wanted to, in spite of reading in a group.

This book doesn't needs a review to judge its magnificence. From page one, it keeps the reader hooked up and builds a story that makes one believe oneself to be a part of it. It is story of life of an idealist who wants to weed out the evils that have hold back the country and during this journey he is married to a woman who is egregiously opposite in character. The woman wants her husband should take the responsibilities of house before working for the society and the country.
Karmabhoomi or field of action is in which the character and destinies of individuals are formed and revealed through their actions; here this field of action is "Human Life".This story intertwined with several other stories make the novel marvelous.
On a personal note, I think Hindi is dying day by day. I have seen mothers not allowing their children to speak Hindi lest their children will get less fluent in English. Since when a language has become a barrier. Language is just a medium of expressing our ideas.

Why did it take me 18 years of my life to realise that I need to read this book? Why? This book has what you can NEVER find in an English/ other language novel.This is my second hindi novel and believe me hindi novels have a charm, a message(many actually) , emotion, strength, sadness and every other human emotion beautifully tied by a ribbon and nothing can replace it.This is a work of god. Period.

किताब पांच भागों में है। कहानी, अन्य प्रेमचन्द की कहानियों की तरह ही उत्तर प्रदेश के देहाती और शहरी क्षेत्र को आदर्शवाद के रंग में डुबोती हुई लगती है। पुरुष पात्र कभी बहुत सुलझे प्रतीत होते है, कभी समझ से परे, मैं तो कॉम्प्लिकेटेड शब्द का प्रयोग करूँगा, जबकि सारे स्त्री पात्रों को जैसे एक सांचे में ढाला गया हो।

आश्चर्य करने वाली जो बात है, किताब लगभग 1930 में लिखी गई थी, जो लगभग 1932 में प्रकाशित हुई, आज से 88 साल पहले प्रेमचन्द ने जिन जिन सामाजिक समस्याओं पर निर्भीकता से अपने विचार रखे है, मुझे नहीं लगता कि वर्तमान में इतनी निर्भीकता से कोई लेखक अपनी बात कह सकेगा, क्योंकि उसे राजनीतिक रूप दे दिया जाएगा।

चाहे हिन्दू-मुस्लिम युवक-युवती के बीच प्रेम-संबंध की बात हो, गोहत्या और गोमाँस भक्षण, जाति-प्रथा, जातीय-संघर्ष, स्त्री-पुरूष के मध्य का भावनात्मक द्वंद, समाजवाद, पूंजीवाद, अफसरशाही, अंतर-पीढ़ी संघर्ष, भारतीय सभ्यता का पश्चिमीकरण, धार्मिक पाखण्ड और न जाने कितने मुद्दों पर प्रेमचन्द कहानी के जरिये अपने अनुभवों के तीर चला जाते है।

तबसे अब तक काफी कुछ बदल चुका है, और बदल रहा है, लेकिन क्या पूर्णरूप से कभी प्रेमचंद का आदर्शवाद कायम हो पायेगा, कह नही सकता। व्यक्तिगत रूप से मेरा आदर्शवाद में कोई विश्वास नही है, क्योंकि यह एक संतृप्तावस्था तो है नही, एक के बाद दूसरा मानक स्तर तय हो जाएगा, दूसरे के बाद तीसरा, ऐसे ही चलता रहेगा....

Godan stands tall among the novels of Premchand and it is the one that is closest to my heart.
But Karmbhumi is equally relevant in today's scenario. I've seen my fellow young men discard Gandhi's beliefs by accusing them of being impractical. But this novel picks the ideals of peace and ahimsa (which were there long before Gandhi used them) from the rubble of retaliation and restores it on the throne of originality and tangibility. Unlike godan, it does not cover all states of thought and does not trace personal philosophical metamorphoses. But that is because it focuses on something much, much important. On human nature, on trust and altruistic notions.

Except for Sukhda almost all characters are inconsistent. Too much of idealism makes story very boring. Story moves here and there or rather there is no plot. Totally disappointed.

"कर्मभूमि" प्रेमचन्द जी का राजनीतिक उपन्यास है । प्रकाशन के पचासी साल बाद भी कई प्रकाशकों द्वारा इसके कई संस्करण निकल रहे हैं। इस उपन्यास में विभिन्न राजनीतिक समस्याओं को कुछ परिवारों के माध्यम से प्रस्तुत किया गया है। प्रेमचन्द्र जी का यह उपन्यास पाँच भागों में विभाजित है।
उपन्यास का कथानक काशी और उसके आस-पास के गाँवों से संबंधित है। आन्दोलन दोनों ही जगह होता है और दोनों का उद्देश्य क्रान्ति है। किन्तु यह क्रान्ति गाँधी जी के सत्याग्रह से प्रभावित है। उपन्यास के अंत तक सभी पात्र जेलों में ठूस दिए जाते हैं। इस तरह प्रेमचन्द क्रान्ति के व्यापक पक्ष का चित्रण करते हुए तत्कालीन सभी राजनीतिक एवं सामाजिक समस्याओं को कथानक से जोड़ देते हैं।
निर्धनों के मकान की समस्या, अछूतोद्धार की समस्या, अछूतों के मन्दिर में प्रवेश की समस्या, भारतीय नारियों की मर्यादा और सतीत्व की रक्षा की समस्या, ब्रिटिश साम्राज्य के दमन चक्र से उत्पन्न समस्याएँ, भारतीय समाज में व्याप्त धार्मिक पाखण्ड की समस्या, राष्ट्र के लिए आन्दोलन करने वालों की पारिवारिक समस्याएँ आदि इस उपन्यास में बड़े यथार्थवादी तरीके से व्यक्त हुई हैं।
'कर्मभूमि' का नायक अमरकांत एक अस्थिर गांधीवादी के रूप में चित्रित किया गया है। उपन्यास के सभी चरित्रों द्वारा लेखक ने राष्ट्रीय चेतना, आदर्श पारिवारिक व्यवस्था आदि को दर्शाया है। प्रेमचन्द की रचना कौशल अद्भुत है। उपन्यास पढ़ते समय तत्कालीन राष्ट्रीय सत्याग्रह आन्दोलन पाठक की आँखों के समक्ष सजीव हो जाता हैं। आदर्शवाद एवं यथार्थवाद से भरपूर यह उपन्यास प्रेमचन्द जी की एक प्रौढ़ रचना है जो हर तरह से प्रभावशाली है।

एक दिन मैं कुछ अच्छे audio content को खोजते हुए अपने Spotify की "Kahani Suno" playlist पे जा पंहुचा जिसमे समीर गोस्वामी ने शानदार वाचन किया है | प्रेमचंद के द्वारा लिखे गये उपन्यास 'कर्मभूमि' का वाचन भी मुझे वहीँ मिला | ऐसे मुझे काल्पनिक कहानियों या fiction पढ़ने का ज्यादा शौक नहीं है, पर मैं हमेसा से प्रेमचंद की प्रसिद्ध कहानियां पढ़ना और सुन्ना चाहता था| एक सुखद-अंत वाला ये उपन्यास, 'कर्मभूमि', भारत के उस समय के राजनितिक संघर्ष को बढे ही स्वाभाविक तरीके से प्रस्तुत करता है | प्रेमचंद ने कहानी के एक-एक पात्र इतने सुन्दर ढंग से विकसित किया है की कहानी के अंत तक आप हर एक किरदार को इतना अच्छे से पहचानने लगते हैं जैसे वह आदमी आपका लम्बे समय का यार हो | कहानी के बिभिन्न पात्रों के अलग अलग चरित्रों से बहुत कुछ सीखने वाला है और कहानी के बिभिन्न पहलुओं पर मानव मनोविज्ञान एवं व्यवहार के बारे में भी अंतःदृष्टि मिलती है | मैंने कई बार अपने आप को इस दुविधा मैं पाया की अगर मैं उस पात्र की जगह होता तो उस परिस्तिथि में क्या करता | इतना लम्बा होने के वाबजूद भी पूरे उपन्यास में कहीं ऐसा महसूस नहीं होता जैसे कहानी को जबरदस्ती खींचा जा रहा हो | कहानी में अमरकांत, सुखदा, मुन्नी, नैना, समरकान्त और शांतिकुमार का किरदार प्रेरणादायक है| भारत की रोज़मर्रा की कठनाइयों, पैसे के लालच, प्यार और तकरार, गरीवों के कठिन परिश्रम से भरी हुए कहिनियों का ये चित्रण मुझे लम्बे समय तक याद रहेगा | मैं सभी हिंदी-प्रेमियों को 'कर्मभूमि' पढ़ने के लिए प्रोत्साहित करता हूँ |

This is the first hindi novel I have read, and the first in works of much acclaimed Munshi Premchand(except for abridged stories in school curriculum). The novel very well portrays many facets of the pre-colonial Indian society in the northern state on the bank of river Ganges. The novel picks up pace in the middle and ends on a very high. The use of hindi language is very well and taking into consideration the knowledge of hindi in today's generation, its not very hard.

Fantastic. A books about social change, ideologies and the nature of men and women in times of crises.
What does it take for a man or a woman to awaken from lethargy and slumber? What does it take to recognise the need to act - in a way that will benefit others more than self? What makes sacrifice, a worthy ideal?
These are issues very few authors can handle - succinctly and without any unnecessary words. Premchand is that class of an author!

Maybe not very entertaining with its story-line, but great work portraying a revolution against aristocracy in British Raj; and situation of religion in Brahman infested Hindu society. Besides, Premchand has penned family, relation, and love in his typical interesting way.

Karmabhumi began really well. I absolutely loved the first 60 pages or so. The characters were beautiful - quirky, but not too much, the language was simple - succinct and beautiful with little metaphors that made my heart happy to read.
The characters were all well formed with their own depths and easy to empathize with. Be it the protagonist, Amarkanth, his wife, Sukhada, or his father, Samarkant, among others. They all fit the context that they were placed in and they behaved realistically. They had their weaknesses and strengths, just as people do, they made mistakes, and regretted and rectified the same when they could, just as people do.
Some Beautiful lines from the book:
“जिन वृक्षों की जड़ें गहरी होती हैं, उन्हें बार-बार सींचने की जरूरत नहीं होती।”
“पुरुष में थोड़ी-सी पशुता होती है, जिसे वह इरादा करके भी हटा नहीं सकता। वही पशुता उसे पुरुष बनाती है। विकास के क्रम से वह स्त्री से पीछे है। जिस दिन वह पूर्ण विकास को पहुंचेगा, वह भी स्त्री हो जाएगा। वात्सल्य, स्नेह, कोमलता, दया, इन्हीं आधारों पर यह सृष्टि थमी हुई है और यह स्त्रियों के गुण हैं।”

Another Masterpiece by Munshi Premchand.
I love the way how he describe the bond between people and the state of their mind so efficiently and in such a way which compels us to be more mindful and perceive the feeling of love and devotion.

Every Indian in one way or the other has read at least one of Munshi Premchand's stories, for me it was in School, his stories were part of the curriculum, just like Shakespeare is for the Europeans i imagine. My favorite among them were "Heera and Moti" the story of two Bulls and "Panch Parmeshwar" ,both of these short stories were absolutely marvelous.My first serious Premchand novel was "Godaan" (NO, not Goddamn, its GODAAN), which to this day remains my favorite Hindi novel.
And though "Karmabhoomi" can't replace 'Godaan' from it's place which it doesn't need to, it stands apart in a class of its own. The novel has very complicated characters, and though the 'Realistic','Day to day social life and norms' and 'Authentic' feel which is Premchand's signature aspects in writing are present, the 'simplicity' is absent.This is truly a magna carta of Indian literature, not because of its size but due to the wide range of issues social ,Religious and the Human psyche conundrums covered in the book. Again , this was written in 1930's,to write about these topics (like Untouchability, Hypocritical religious practices, Inter faith love interests,Women empowerment,corruption among the ruling classes) than would be like living in a kerosene soaked house and attempting to cook.That too under British Raj, oh so many times i wondered why has the author not named names when time came to the assign responsibility for the pain caused to the people specially the farmers, but of course he didn't name names, they would never have allowed it to be published.So, Premchand had cleverly used other tools at his disposal, linking greed, hypocritical laws and lawmakers and pointed in the general direction.
All in all, this novel was the amalgamation of every aspect of the Gandhian ways, a family’s struggle to finally finding in each other the very comfort that they had craved all their lives, a true companionship and sense of peace brought by the services of others.As always it was a pleasure reading one of the most celebrated authors in all his glory. A must read for any Indian lit enthusiast.

My favorite among them were "Heera and Moti" the story of two Bulls and "Panch Parmeshwar" ,both of these short stories were absolutely marvelous.My first serious Premchand novel was "Godaan" (NO, not Goddamn, its GODAAN), which to this day remains my favorite Hindi novel.
And though "Karmabhoomi" can't replace 'Godaan' from it's place which it doesn't need to, it stands apart in a class of its own. The novel has very complicated characters, and though the 'Realistic','Day to day social life and norms' and 'Authentic' feel which is Premchand's signature aspects in writing are present, the 'simplicity' is absent.This is truly a magna carta of Indian literature, not because of its size but due to the wide range of issues social ,Religious and the Human psyche conundrums covered in the book. Again , this was written in 1930's,to write about these topics (like Untouchability, Hypocritical religious practices, Inter faith love interests,Women empowerment,corruption among the ruling classes) than would be like living in a kerosene soaked house and attempting to cook.That too under British Raj, oh so many times i wondered why has the author not named names when time came to the assign responsibility for the pain caused to the people specially the farmers, but of course he didn't name names, they would never have allowed it to be published.So, Premchand had cleverly used other tools at his disposal, linking greed, hypocritical laws and lawmakers and pointed in the general direction.
All in all, this novel was the amalgamation of every aspect of the Gandhian ways, a family’s struggle to finally finding in each other the very comfort that they had craved all their lives, a true companionship and sense of peace brought by the services of others.As always it was a pleasure reading one of the most celebrated authors in all his glory. A must read for any Indian lit enthusiast.

"कर्मभूमि" उपन्यास सम्राट प्रेमचंद्र जी की उस कृतियों में है जहां पे उन्होंने सारी मानवीय भावनाओं को एक डोर से बांध दिया है। उस काल की सभी परिस्थितियों से दृष्टिगत करा दिया है। इस उपन्यास को पढ़ते पढ़ते कभी आंखे भर जाती थी , कभी गर्व से मन प्रसन्न हो जाता था, कभी अथाह दुखो के समुद्र में मन जा पहुंचता था, परंतु सबका कायाकल्प हुआ और अंत में वो पूर्णिमा की रात आ ही गई जब सशक्त पूज्यनीय स्त्री नैना ने अपनी प्राणों से यज्ञ की पूर्णाहुति की और सामरिक विजयनाद हुआ। इसमें सभी पात्रों ने अपनी अदम्य साहस, उत्सर्ग और मानवीय समरसता का आखिरी बिंदु स्पर्श किया है । चाहे मुनि का भिखारन का भेष में अपनी सतीत्व के लिए संघर्ष तथा दी गई एक मर्यादित भारतीय नारी की अतुलनीय परिभाषा या सकीना का वासनाओं से परे प्रेम का उदाहरण या सुखदा, रेणुका, सलोनी, पठानींन , सलीम , लाला समर कांत एवं डॉक्टर साहब सबका व्यक्तिगत जीवन से उठकर सार्वजनिक जीवन की यात्रा तथा मुख्य पात्र अमरकांत की लोकमंगलकरी जीवन जो सभी पात्रों की प्रेरणा श्रोत बनकर उभरी।कर्मभूमि केवल एक उपन्यास नहीं, बल्कि मानवीय चेतना, त्याग और सामाजिक उत्तरदायित्व का घोषणापत्र है।

I read stories by Munshi Premchand ji in textbooks in schools. Writing of munshi premchand ji are so deep you don’t not read that you feel them. There was one story in school time “budi kaki”, After reading that I used to cry.
After a long time I read one book written by munshi premchand ji, karmabhumi. After starting that I could not stop myself, i completed in 3 days. While reading this book I cried many times. It felt like I was not just reading any book, I was living in book.
The way munshi ji described relationship in family, principles of people. It was amazing.The things covered in karmabhumi I can’t even summarize them. This book made me to change my point of view my relationship with everyone.Love is described in such a beautiful way, that relationship seems pure, quite deep and divine. That we see very rarely in this world

The way Premchand handles social evils and builds a story around it is almost like this must have happened. Reading it now a days gives amazing insight about the social systems and injustices that used to happen at his time. This book masterfully discusses untouchability, education, lagaan (crop tax), female upliftment and British rule in India. Reading Premchand's novels is like you are reading what's in the author's mind, how he thinks about the day to day struggles and about his philosophy. Read this if you are into pre-independence Indian history or British in India history.

उपन्यास का सारांश : संसार में बाप और बेटे के बीच का द्वंद और फिर दोनों को समय के साथ बदलते देखने का अनुभव वाह ! इस उपन्यास के बारे में लिखना आसां नहीं है । यह एक परिवार की कहानी है जहाँ सिद्धान्तों को लेकर बाप बेटे, पत्नी पत्नी आपस में टकराते रहते हैं पर दिल में सभी ने एक अनमोल मोती छुपा कर रखा होता है । यहाँ क़दम क़दम पर लोग एक दूसरे के विरुद्ध जा कर बोलते हैं, लड़ते हैं और फिर भी उनका लक्ष्य एक होता है । एक मंज़िल होना और अलग अलग रास्तों का चयन करना सभी पात्रों द्वारा बहुत सरल तरीक़े से दिखाया है "प्रेमचन्द" जी ने । उपन्यास एक समाजिक मुद्दे पर लिखा गया है और साथ में पारिवारिक दिक़्क़तों को हमारे सामने दर्शाया गया है । कहानी है अमरकान्त की जो धन को किसी वस्तु मात्र से ज़्यादा नहीं समझता , सुखदा की जो अमरकान्त की पत्नी है जिनके आदर्श अमरकान्त के हिसाब से उनसे बहुत अलग हैं , नैना की जो सब कुछ हार जाती है यहाँ तक की अपना जीवन, सलीम और अमरकान्त के दोस्ती की , मुन्नी की और पठानिन कि । हर किरदार इतना शश्क्त , इतना स्वाभिमानी, इतना गौरवशाली कि ये तह करना मुश्किल हो जाये ग़लत कौन सही कौन ?
कहानी : अमरकान्त को बचपन से ही माँ का स्नेह नहीं मिला । उसके पिता से उसकी बनती नहीं और उसकी पत्नी में उसे स्नेह कम रौब ज़्यादा नज़र आता है । सलीम उसके बचपन का दोस्त । समरकान्त चाहते हैं उनका बेटा उनके बनाये व्यापार को आगे ले जाये पर वो समाज में रह कर समाज के लिए काम करना चाहते हैं । जब अमरकांत डॉक्टर शान्ति कुमार के सेवाश्रम में काम करने लगता है तो उससे निराश होकर समरकान्त उसे घर से अलग कर देते हैं । अमरकान्त अपने परिवार ,बहन नैना और बूढ़ी नौकरानी सिल्लो के साथ दस रूपये किराए के मकान में रहने लगता है । वह खादी बेचकर तथा सुखदा बालिका विद्यालय में नौकरी करके घर का खर्चा चलाने लगते हैं । नैना का विवाह रईस लाला धनी राम की पुत्र मनीराम से होता हैजोव्यसनी तथादुराचरी है । गृहस्थी के सुख से वंचित नैना समाज सेवा में लगा जाती है । निर्धनों को जमीन औए मकान देने के लिए आयोजित आन्दोलन का नेतृत्व करते हुए अपने पति की गोली का शिकार हो जाती है । मुन्नी का बलात्कार होना उसके लिए सुखदा का लड़ना । अमरकान्त का सकीना की और एक खिंचाव महसूस करना अंततः उसका घर को छोड़ कर चला जाना और लगातार समाज के हित के बारे में सोचना और कार्यरत रहना । ठाकुरद्वारे में चमारों को जाने की इज़्ज़ाज़त ना थी और सुखदा ने यहाँ इसका विरोध करते हुए इस संघर्ष में हिस्सा लिया । वो जन के लिए देवी बन गयी । मुन्नी का परिवार उसके पति और बेटे दोनों मौत के घाट उतर गए । फ़िर जीवन में एक ऐसा मोड़ आया जैसा देश में क्रांति के समय आया था । हर कोई अपने प्रांत से लड़ रहा था ग़लत के ख़िलाफ़, सरकार के विरुद्ध और ऐसा ही करते मिले अमरकान्त, समरकान्त, नैना, सुखदा, सलीम , शान्तिकुमार और अंततः सब मिलते हैं जेल में और उनकी मेहनत रंग लाती है ।
उपन्यास के कुछ संवाद जो दिल में घर कर जाते हैं और उपन्यास की भाषा शैली से आपको पता लगेगा "प्रेमचंद" जी सिर्फ़ एक हिंदी उपन्यासकार न थे अपितु उर्दू में उनकी पकड़ बहुत शानदार थी । कुछ पंक्तियां जो जीवन के सत्य को हमारे सामने रखती है पेश करना चाहूँगा
1-" सुखिदा और नैना दोनों उसके अनंतस्थल के दो कूल
थ। सुखिदा ऊंची, दुगर्यम और विशाल थी। लहरें उसके चरणों ही तक पहुंचकर रह जाती थीं। नैना समतल, सुलभ और समीप। वायु का थोड़ा वेग पाकर भी लहरें उसके ममर्यस्थल तक पहुँचती थी" ।
2- "रमणी की नम्रता और सलज्ज अननुरोधा का स्वाद पा जाने के बाद अनब सुखिदा की प्रितभा और गिरमा उसे बोझ-सी लगती थी। वहां हरे-भरे पत्तों में रूखिी-सूखिी सामग्री थी यहां सोने-चांदी के थालों में नाना व्यंजन सजे हुए थ। वहां सरल स्नेह था, यहां गवर्य का दिखिावा था। वह सरल स्नेह का प्रसाद उसे अनपनी ओर खिींचता था, यह अनमीरी ठाट अनपनी ओर से हटाता था।
3- डरना मनुष्य के लिये स्वाभािवक है जिसमें पुरुषाथर्य है, ज्ञान है, बल है, वह बाधाआं को तुच्छ समझ सकता है। जिसके पास व्यंजनों से भरा हुआ थाल है, वह एक टुकड़ा कुत्तो के सामने फेंक सकता है,जिसके पास एक ही टुकड़ा हो वह उसी से चिमटेगा ।

When my mother would tell me to read Premchand, I would make do with the short stories they taught us in school. Never quite venturing beyond the scope of going through only what is required. This changed this year when I realised that while I call myself a bookworm, my grasp on Indian literature, Hindi to be precise, is laughable. A friend had sent me Karmabhoomi as a birthday present and the lockdown gave me the opportunity to delve in while making me acutely aware of how I had overestimated my Hindi vocabulary. It taught me humility.
Humility- that is one theme that constantly recurs throughout Premchand's masterpiece. Every character with their varied personas and opinions share the vice of arrogance. Be it Amarkant's arrogance for his political beliefs and his dedication to stay true to his beliefs or Sukhda's arrogance for her beauty intially to her arrogance for the work she does for the poor later on or Salim's arrogance over his carefree way of dealing with life. All of them are forced to acknowledge this vice time and again because our ego doesn't really allow us to not be proud. Some of the characters are in fact proud of their humility.
The independence struggle serves as the backdrop of karmabhoomi. Never quite addressed in the forefront but its presence is always there, it's always making itself known. But Karmabhoomi isn't about the freedom struggle. It is about growing up, finding your voice, and how economic slowdown invariably affects the poor much much more than it affects the affluent.
Through only a handful of characters it talks about the ways politics and personal lives are intertwined, how quickly a person adapts and how his viewpoint of the world changes with a change in his circumstances. It talks about marriage- why marriages fail, extramarital affairs, unrequited love all served with such subtlety that will leave you amazed at how our ancestors too struggled with the concept of love and lust.
Through Sukhda, you can catch a glimpse of feminist ideologies taking root in the twentieth century India and in Munni you see a woman who left her family to keep them from getting ostracized due to her misfortune and finding home in fighting for the rights of community of 'uneducated, untouchables'. Sakina shows you quite dignity and from within the four walls of a dilapidated room, manages to bring forth the revolutionary in Amarkant.
Samarkant is the villain of Amarkant's life but as you give him time, you begin to understand his motives were always to make sure that his family doesn't have to struggle the way he did and yet they go out of their way to do so and he too finds a home in speaking for the downtrodden.
All these storylines emerge from a single source- Amarkant and his struggle to come to terms with his privilege while his ideologies take him to give up the life of luxury he has always known in favour of tutoring the kids of 'neech jaati' in a village overburdened by loans, lagan, and the economic slowdown. It then diverges into seemingly parallel storylines but ultimately converges into each character finally realising the roles they were meant to play leading to almost everyone getting arrested in a quick succession. Here also, you stop to marvel at how matter of factedly Premchand manages to describe upheavals and bloodbaths in a tone so conversational that you would find nothing out of the ordinary in policemen opening fire at the drop of a hat.

In today's India, which still grapples with patriarchal structures and social inequities, "Karambhumi" reads not just as historical fiction but as a mirror to contemporary challenges. While the novel deserves wider readership, its enduring relevance reminds us that some struggles - particularly those involving women's empowerment and social justice - require persistent engagement across generations.

In my schooldays, I had read a number of short stories of Munshi Premchand (पूस की रात and ईदगाह stand out among them) as well as the novels - निर्मला, गोदान and ग़बन). Not only was he a master storyteller with unparalleled command over Hindi and Urdu grammar and vocabulary, in my opinion, there could not have been a better way of gaining insight into the prevailing socioeconomic and cultural milieu in pre-independence and contemporaneous times of Premchand than through his stories and novels. This is especially true for Northern part of the country especially the Hindi-speaking belt (BIMARU).
कर्मभूमि is probably a lesser know work of Premchand. However he lived upto his reputation as a master storyteller highlighting the social issues of his time, the lives of the rich and the poor and justice/injustice, equality/inequality in the society. Set mainly in Varanasi and Hardwar and the nearby areas, the author, through life’s narrative of the main protagonist of the novel - Amarkant - and his friends and family - Samarkant (Father), Naina (Sister), Sukhda (Wife), Saleem and Dr Shantikumar (Friends), Renuka (mother-in-law), Pathanin, Sakina and Munni (poor people who were socially involved with Amarkant in various capacity) - highlights the contemporary situation. However, he also highlights the cultural and social awakening taking place across the society and the novel ends on a happy and positive note.
