Consumed by hate, I've done the unthinkable. And it's turned me into a hero. Now, I must decide how far I'll go to keep my secret safe.
I won't let you know the truth.
But the sounds that echo in my head...
...are only growing louder.
Attempted murder gives a man his family back. It's everything he's ever wanted, but he can't forget what he did. And the longer he holds the secret, the more control he loses to the darkness whispering in his ear. It craves violence and can't be silenced forever. The line between truth and lies is disappearing. And with it, the difference between right and wrong.
WARNING: Strong adult language and graphic violence.
Michael has always been a prisoner to his imagination. His childhood was spent running through the forest, pretending to be a gallant warrior saving the countryside from certain destruction. Or he was a ferocious beast terrorizing the very same countryside. There is always a story spinning through his mind. As an adult, writing has become the only way to keep his head from exploding.
He lives in upstate New York with his loving wife and two cats. If he's not writing, he's likely reading, weightlifting, or forcing his players into difficult situations from behind his Dungeon Master's screen. He is a storyteller first and a writer second.
I thought I'd start reading this book "House of Sand" since I had a little time to spare but by chapter three, I knew I wasn't going to be able to put it down and ended up reading nearly half the book straight off. I was very intrigued to what was happening in the storyline and the tension soon ratchets up, making you wonder what is going to happen, what actually is the truth and who should you believe! Attempted murder gives a man his family back. It's everything he's ever wanted, but he can't forget what he did. And the longer he holds the secret, the more control he loses to the darkness whispering in his ear. It craves violence and can't be silenced forever. Guilt, madness and emotional trauma consumes him to a point he can no longer distinguish right from wrong. I loved the characters in the story, there're all quite likeable and although billed as a psychological thriller, it was much more of a dark, sinister and quite violent thriller to me than psychological. The author, Michael J Sanford, has done a brilliant job conveying mental illness into a compelling story and I truly enjoyed every minute. I never expected the twist in the plot or the ending. The f word is mentioned quite a few times so be warned and there is some graphic violence but it's not excessively bad and didn't offend me personally. Well worth a read, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book and would certainly read more by this author again.
House of Sand is a dark, twisted read with well developed characters. It's gripping, once I started I couldn't put it down but I still don't know what to make of it. I loved some parts of the story, some just confused me. I loved how author portrays main character's descent into madness. The sounds echoing in his head, the compulsion to do certain things, the violence that comes with it. All that's brilliantly written and compelling. It's the third part of the book that kind of lost me. Things go off-kilter too much for me. I liked the ending a lot though and will definitely try other books by Michael J Sanford.
WARNING: Strong adult language and graphic violence.
He is married, has one child, a daughter, and is unemployed. His wife is gainfully employed and resents her husband's lack of motivation in finding a job. He spends his days with his only friend, Tyler.
He hears noises in his head that drive him literally crazy. The noises get louder and louder until he explodes with anger.
The first half of the book was a compelling read. Was this an insane man trying to live in a sane world? Or was he a sane man living in an insane world?
The second half of the book segues into something else altogether. It felt more like a horror story rather than a psychological thriller. I did, however, like the ending.
The premise was a good one and the characters were fully developed.
Many thanks to the author and TBC Reviews who provided a digital copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
House of sand by Michael j sanford. After he saves his wife and child from a fire in their home. He is called a hero. But is he a hero? Who started the fire? Wow what a read. Absolutely fantastic read. This was a thriller of a twister of a read. I really enjoyed this book. I was shocked as I was reading it. Couldn't put it down. Highly recommended. 5*. Tbc on fb.
A great psychological thriller! I loved it. I have always been a Michael J. Sandford fan and he did not disappoint me at all! It sucked me in right from the start and I couldn't put it down.
I finished this a few days ago, but needed time to think about it. A very intriguing and intense story.
A dark tale of creeping insanity, which becomes more disturbing and violent as the story moves on. The main character steadily loses his grip on reality And so I found myself wondering what was real in the story and what wasn't. Even after finishing the book I'm still not sure! The characters are well drawn, the story moves along quickly, there's a big twist part way through, and an even bigger one at the end. I really enjoyed this book even though I had questions at the end!
An aside - I loved the font used for the chapter headings!

I really don’t know what to say about this book. It’s gripping and unexpected but somehow it wasn’t ‘me’. Maybe it’s because it seems as though it’s written by a child. I’m not sure. I liked it enough to give it 3.5*
( Format : audiobook ) "Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick." A book in three parts, tracing a father's decent into madness. Powerfully written in the first person, the reader is inside the head of the main protagonist, who is already troubled, depressed and delusional. He is unemployed, having been fired from his previous job as a paramedic and is having little success in finding a new job: he always seems to mess up any aplication. His wife works full time but they are in financial difficulties with the house likely to be repossessed soon. She is getting both desperately and resentful that her husband isn't taking on more of the responsibilities. And they have an eight years old daughter. Part one really introduces us to the family and to the strange sound repetition resounding around in the lead protagonist's head. He also has time drop outs, forgetting appointments and generally losing parts of his day until his house burns down, he wakes in the hospital and is hailed an hero. Suddenly has everything he had always wanted: admiration and the love of his family. But then everything starts to go wrong again. This first section is totally compelling. But the following two parts, charting his further disintegration defends into a mixture of madness and horror where truth and reality meld together both for the man himself and the reader.nAlthough still well written, it moves out of the realm of psychological and almost into the paranormal, jumping between places and ideas in an alarmingly disconcerting way to the final denouement at the end of the book. For this reader, it detracted from the original successes established earlier. Still a can't put down read but not fulfilling the excellence of the opening sections.
The soundtrack is cleverly done, with odd repetitive noises and phrases invading the background, mimicking those in the protagonist's head. But it is narrator, Michael Robbins, who truly makes the story come alive with his excellent interpretation of the husband struggling with his moods and confusions. His pace perfect, gentle, pleasing voice catches all the nuances of his situation as well as giving individual voice to all other characters. His was a really good and unsettling performance.
I am pleased to have listened to this book and have to thank the rights holder of House of Sand for freely gifting me a complimentary copy, at my request, via Audiobook Boom. The work was vivid, imprinting heavily in my mind as well as being thought provoking, frightening in it's earlier implications and, as such, rather sad. How well do we ever know anyone, even ourselves? However, the latter part, for me, pushed just that little bit too far, became too confusing and thus lessened the overall impact. Removing the larger part of section two would have improved this. Would I recommend it as it stands? Possibly, but only to someone who likes violence and blood mixed with over the top unreality included with their psychological thrills.
I had to get my head together before writing a review on this book. I felt as if my brain was being shaken up in a snowglobe; a couple of things disturbed me but I couldn't see clearly for all the snow until it all settled. Confused? Pretty much how I felt for most of the book but yet I still couldn't put it down.
We are introduced to a clearly unhinged man in House of Sand, he's currently unemployed and it's putting quite a strain on his marriage. He is totally besotted with his 8 year old daughter, Aza, who is VERY advanced for her years. If we weren't told that she was 8 years old, you could be mistaken for putting her in her mid to late teens with all her mood swings and swearing. So that his wife, Joy, won't leave him taking his beloved Aza with her, he agrees to attend an interview that Joy has arranged but he has a total meltdown in the waiting room and runs out of the building.
As if things couldn't get any crazier, our main character goes and sets fire to his house then runs into the burning building like a hero. The family see it as a new beginning but the strain of hiding the truth about the origins of the fire cause him to unravel like a roll of toilet paper pursued by an Andrex puppy. When all that is left is the empty cardboard core, we finally see him for who he really is.
Now I really thought I'd missed something when I didn't know the name of the main character; I found myself flicking back over a few pages now and again to see if I had somehow missed it. So along with an 8 year old acting like a teenager, this lack of name disturbed me but if you remember the snowglobe analogy I mentioned earlier, it does all become clear at the end and looking back now, I think it was actually pretty genius.
House of Sand feels like madness personified; nothing is what it seems and I think I read most of the book with permanently surprised raised eyebrows! It didn't turn out at all as I imagined, which can only ever be a good thing - it really is very dark, shocking and surprising. I think it's one of those books I need to read again to pick up on the clever little nuances that I completely missed the first time round.
I chose to read an ARC and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.
A deep dark, horrifying, emotional psychological thriller filled with action, suspense, drama and twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seats. The tension was thick plus well sustained. Each character influenced the consequences of the others. The author get inside the heads of the characters then presents them to the readers so that the inner workings of all the characters are well known. Very graphic scenes and use of vulgar language as part of the story. A story that you will not forget!!! I volunteered to read House of Sand. Thanks to Reading Deals for the opportunity. My opinion is my own.
tense, descriptive and hard hitting this isn't for the faint hearted. for me it was too clever for its own good and I started to feel all a little confused. would not put me off another book by this author however. A very respectable 3 stars
This is a compelling listen. I felt at times that I was going as mad as our protagonist. It was genuinely heartbreaking to be there as he sank further and further into complete lunacy. Mr Sanford has composed Hamlet for the modern age. After all, there is much discussion as to whether Hamlet's madness is real or feigned, and at times, it seems as if our hero/villain is very much in control of his actions. Ultimately, what is real, what is imagined, who is real or imagined. A deeply disturbing tale that I can only hope will give those people who want sufferers of depression or mental illness to 'pull themselves together', pause for thought. A difficult, and I'm sure some would say controversial, book to hear but the message is well worth listening to.
Described as a dark psychological thriller, House of Sand is certainly dark and thrilling and full of clever twists and turns. It is graphic in its descriptions of violence and is narrated by an out of work husband whose successful wife Joy grows annoyed at his lack of effort to find a job.
He is father to Aza a precocious 8 year old and he also suffers from anxiety and stress, hearing a constant ticking in his head and frequently losing track of hours of time.
Discovering Joys betrayal leads him into what the cover calls “a descent into madness” and thus far it was a 5 star thriller. However the latter part of the book became - for me - hard to follow and despite an incredibly clever twist the book became very, very dark.
It’s a clever story with a brilliant ending. No spoilers from me and 4 stars - if you like a dark, dark tale you will love this
What would happen if you betray your moral compass?Could you regain your moral stance? A very dark but well written novel that questions all that you know
I read this and the sequel, DEAR TRAGEDY, in succession. I'm still in shock. I've read Horror and Mystery and Crime and Supernatural fiction all my long life. I've read extreme horror. I've read terrifying stories. But this series: exploded my head. Seriously. These plots (which are actually an extended plot as Book 1 carries on into Book 2) are so "out there" that even I (jaded as I've become) am going to sleep with all the doors locked and every light in the house on (I am not going to say "burning") and I still won't be able to sleep without nightmares, if at all.
Definitely and distinctly NOT for the faint of heart, weak of stomach, or sensitive of heart or mind. If, however, none of these apply to you, and you like horror that knocks you senseless and kicks you when you're down and cowering, try these.
Interesting that some reviewers feel this dark, psychological thriller should be placed in the horror genre; that rather demonstrates how well this author tackled the subject of psychiatric illness, although this was a pretty extreme case and may have skipped over the bounds of what is possible, or more likely, probable.
Nonetheless, it's a skilfully woven, tense and compelling story that traces one man's descent into madness. Or does it? That's exactly the question that kept me flicking the pages to discover.
Very well written, characters have depth and are believable, the pace is fast and there's some terrific twists. Rather exhausted by the time I finished the final page!
I received an ARC of this book and chose to post a review.
I'm still having one of those moments where I'm still trying to figure out what I just read and I finished this book four days ago. Wow! I'm not sure if I liked this story or not. The verdict is still out. This book takes you on a whirlwind where you actually start thing you're insane along with the main character. Yes, I agree with another reviewer that this is really a horror story and not a psychological thriller. It's very dark and one you don't know how it will end. The ending wasn't what I expected so it was a surprise for me....
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book...
This was one of those books that is nearly impossible to put down once you start reading it! Lots of plot twists and physiological suspense. Very interesting characters and the author does an excellent job conveying the reality of mental illness into a compelling story. It makes you wonder who's really insane? I was surprised by the ending, not what I expected! It does contain language that some may find offensive, as well as some violence. I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book, through Reading Deals, and I gave an honest review. Thanks for providing me this oppertunity!
If there's one thing that drives me crazy, it's repeated instances of bad grammar throughout a book. And it's too bad, because Sanford's story is compelling. Sanford, if you're reading this, prepositions take the objective case. You wouldn't write the sentence my daughter went with I, so why would you say my daughter went with my wife and I? You do something like that quite a few times in your book and it's wildly distracting. It takes my head right out of the story.
If you need a great editor, I'm available. You can read my testimonials on denisedesio.com.
What a book. The main character is hard to follow at times because of the voices in his head. You follow along on his journey which really does not take him to any great places. You start to wonder what he is doing is real or in his head. And what is up with his foul mouth 8 year old daughter? This book does get in your head and makes you want to get to the end to see what happens.
*Thank you Hidden Gems for allowing me to read this for my honest review*
I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy. Very psychological. The kind of book that'll stick with you. A father and husband is consumed with guilt over trying to burn down his house with his family inside. There are twists that'll keep you thinking, which is exactly the kind of book I'm looking for. This one keeps you at the edge of your seat, and keeps you guessing. It's very hard to put down. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
I love novels that are off the beaten path and this psychological thriller did enough for me to sneak it into the five star ranking. The characters are very good, the plot very mysterious, and the ending very disturbing. A very good read in my humble opinion if you are into fiction that has a few twists and turns.
Kindle version. Wow, I feel sorry for this guy. Sounds to me like he had a case of multiple personalities or something. Poor guy loses his job, almost loses his wife and child over an affair he has with his imaginary best friend? Then his house burns down and his mistress is murdered. Did he or didn't he? This is definitely a mind bending psychological thriller, with a few twists.

Advertised as a dark psychological thriller, I couldn't agree more. Complicated twists and turns with the torment of someone obviously suffering mental health issues culminating in a 'wow, I didn't see that coming'. If you ignore the slightly far fetched non involvement of the police, it is a pretty good book.
This is a very disturbing psychological thriller. I wanted to read something different from cozy mysteries so I bought this book. It gave me the creeps which is what I wanted. If you love to be scared, and you like to read this type of book, you will love this story.
A gripping storyline that will keep you reading. It is confusing at times and didn't make sense. This was the first book I've read by this author. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Audible:A man decides to do the unthinkable, then changes his mind and becomes a hero. Can he live with his guilt?A very dark tale.A very good tale.Narrated nicely by Michael Robbins.I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
Wow!!!! This couldn't have been a more suspenseful book! From start to finish will keep you on your toes. Complex characters and an impossible to foresee the next thing to come along in the story! Can't wait to read the next book!
